Saw a sharp dt-200 today at ABSound

Wandered into A&B sound and they have a sharp dt-200 set up in one of their listening rooms. Could not for the life of me see any rainbows. The picture didn't seem overly bright to me...I could see screen door but the distance is only like 5 -6 ft from the screen.

It was a fairly quiet projector (but I haven't seen that many projectors). Mind you it was set up right next to couch so you could definately hear the fan. Might be a different story ceiling mounted.

Native resolution is 800 x 600 / or 480,000 pixels. It is compatible with HDTV 720p and 1080i, but at that low native resolution, I don't think it would do such a great job. The X1 is said to give a better picture at a lot less money CDN. The Sharp does have a dual mode dmd panel, though, so that you can use a 16:9 screen and project the 4:3 in the center. But I really feel it is over priced at $5K.

The other thing I noticed is that you definately need light control with that projector. It's not overly bright...that's fer sure.

The Sharp DT200 has a 5X color wheel, so you shouldn't see any rainbows.

$4,000 CAN, is a pretty steep price for that projector, but that's why most A/V stores don't promote digital projectors, and instead push Plasma displays, more profit.

Personally, I'd choose a XGA FPTV over a SVGA one if possible. Sometimes the price difference is small, but scaled DVDs and certainly HDTV looks worlds better with the smoother, higher resolution image that XGA provides.

The Sharp PG-M20X and the NEC LT240 cost about the same or less as the DT200, but are XGA DLP models, and have 3X the light output, with comparable contrast.

And the InFocus X1 and Sharp PG-M20S are both comparable SVGA units at almost half of your $4000 CDN price.
