Sony's Wega

Howdy yall,

Stopped by a a/v dealer tonight, looked at a 27 and 32" Wega. Very pricey......but is true flat screen worth the cost?

Any personal experiences anybody might be able to share? I would appreciate any pros/cons yall might be able to throw at me.

The Wega's are nice sets. I like them because they have a function that will automatically squeeze anamorphic dvd's. I think the highend Toshiba's, the FX61's, can now do this, but don't know of any other sets that will do this, unless you go into the service menu.

The con's are the price.

When I was looking for a secondary Tv for the extra TV(guest) room, I darn near bought a Wega.They wanted 2K Canadian for a 32 incher and I thought that was a bit much for a secondary tv. I ended up buying a 36" Toshiba. You can make it do the squeeze via the service menu, but that's too much trouble going back and forth.I got this set for $1100. Canadian, which was more in my budget, but I often wished I had bought the Wega.Thy do have a beautiful picture.

I've recently seen some 27", 32", and 36" Wega's for sale at Costco. The prices are much more resonable, but still pricey. These were "last years" models.

I did some pricing on the 27" and the 32". 27 for $699 and 32 for $1000 at a local video store. (The money hungery salesman really got excited when he saw me looking intently at the units. Even offered a whopping $40. off the price). :M

Still looking, maybe that tax refund check coming next month will help.

Which models are you looking at?

I have last year's top of the Wega heap: the 36" XBR 400 (since replaced by the XBR 450). It's the perfect TV for me right now. I wanted HD capability but didn't want a 16x9 display when 90% of my viewing would be 4:3. The XBR 400 lets me dip my feet into HD (I'll no doubt take the full plunge in a year or two by buying a full-on 16x9 HD set).

Well, I was impressed with the picture quality of the Wega and size above 27" would be nice. Of course the kicker would be the tv with the 16:9 compression feature. I just wish I was in the position to just jump out there and get one. :B

In a word: YES.

After suffering for 10 years with an OLD RCA ColorTrak 27" set, my family sprung for a new KV-36XBR400 set in April -- we haven't looked back since.

With a progressive-scan DVD player, the picture is simply outstanding. Even on broadcast (cable) TV, it beats the RCA in every way.

It's a great investment.

Does a progressive DVD player look noticeably better on the Wegas (XBR400,450) than interlaced? A friend of mine recently got a KV32XBR450 (I haven't seen it yet) but he's so floored by the picture that he doesn't think a progressive DVD player could look any better.

I'm trying to convince him what his next upgrade will be. :)

Progressive DVD players have a " subtle" differance but it was well worth my investment.

I dont know about a Sony XBR but on a RPTV noticeable differances are scrolling text, gleam/sparkle in eyes, better color ( blacks seem blacker ( on the movie "The Perfect Storm", "Jurrasic Park" and others there appears to be a slight foggy appearance with interlaced and this completely disappears with progressive..........If you want technical jargon I can dig some up to bore you

I honestly think my old interlaced DVD player looked better on my XBR 400 than my current progressive player.

Sony's line doubler is so good with the DVD source that Progressive really doesn't have the opportunity to show it's stuff. This certainly was NOT the case with my previous XBR 250. Progressive (different player) was a very noticable improvement on that model.
