I was going to let everyone participate on page 100, then start a new chapter afterward. However we have been on page 100 for a few days now ,so I figured I might as well shut her down and start the new one.
Cold here in Toon-Town. Still winter for sure.

I was going to let everyone participate on page 100, then start a new chapter afterward. However we have been on page 100 for a few days now ,so I figured I might as well shut her down and start the new one.We still can, as TTP V hasn't been closed yet. :)
Got back from basketball tourney a few hours ago. Just got up from a much needed nap, also been fighting a cold but I'm feeling better now. Just in time to return to you know where and deal with you know who tomorrow. :( I'd just love to actually get a response when I submit my resume on hotjobs.com.
I got a "SMTP deny" report email from my Linux box. We get signal. Usually this means either some spammer tried to scan me for an email server to exploit, or namesdirect changed IPs for their email forwarding, but when I looked into this one it came from some "security-scan" server at AT&T. So now they're snooping us. All your base are belong to us. I'm glad I have a firewall. :?

Ok, where is everyone? Heather's out for a bit, so I'm in the family room with the laptop and the system cranked! This is the only time I get to experience 2-channel audio bliss. I don't tend to play CDs when Heather's at home (usually she just keeps the radio on), so most of my CD listening happens at work or in the car. But when she's out, then I can re-discover how my CDs sound on a real system! If I put in a CD that I listen to at work a lot I notice a lot of detail that gets lost when it's played on a cheap boom box through cheap headphones. I wonder if it's possible to achieve at least semi-audiophile quality in a cramped cubicle, with headphones. I might have to do some research. I wonder where that would lead... I could end up being the first cubicle dweller with a SACD player and a tubed headphone amp, connected with SilverCats, in my cubicle! haha :)
(Unfortunately, there's no place to connect SilverCats on my boom box!)

hey guys. Sure, you can use Silvercats on a boom box, just takes a little creativity Kev. :)That would be a funny sight, these thick silver cables coming out of the back of a little Sony boom box! Somehow I don't think they'll make the difference they make on my main system though... In any case, the cables would cost me more than the boom box did! 8O Still feel like hell here, no work for me tomorrow, evne though it sure wasn't in the plan. Did I say I feel like hell? :(Hope you feel better soon! I've been fighting a cold all weekend. However, I'm never lucky enough to get sick during the week and actually get a day off from work for it. I always get sick on the weekend and them I'm all better on Monday.

hey guys here's what I've been up to all weekend
http://www.mts.net/~glendap/wall.jpg
It would sure be easier if all the walls were straight:) Went up easy though just had to route out a section so the door would fit properly. tomorrow the drywall goes in.
Spent most of saturday going back and forth to home depot. Picked up a BBQ and a bunch of supplies for the wall construction, the riser and the acoustic wall treatments...its going to be a great room when I'm done!
http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
Hey, not bad construction work Andrew. I do think you should double up the 2 X 4 support on the door frame, and really, you should have went to the floor joists. It looks like a drop ceiling, and you will get some wall movement when you shut the door without being tied to the floor joists. Just my amatuer observations. :)

I don't live in Canada but my car is on the 10 Most Wanted list -- a great car is a great car regardless of geography... :>) (and it is near the top of most frequently stolen models in Texas too) :>) Oh yeah -- it is the Honda Accord, my third, and no the first two were not stolen from me, unless you count the low trade-in I got for a car that supposedly really holds its value.a :>)
Lex -- Good point about the door frame -- but I think he is keeping the wall semi-"mobile" in case he decides to change the room configurations... (won't say how I know that) :>) but it would be a lot harder to move to allow more room one side or the other if he connected the frame to the floor joists...

AUTO SUPPLY
The other day I was in the local auto part store. A lady comes in and asks for a seven ten cap. We all looked at each other and said, "What's a seven ten cap?"
She said "You know, it's right on the engine. Mine got lost some how and I need a new one."
"What kind of a car is it on," they asked? Now I'm thinking maybe an old Dotson Seven Ten, but no, she said its a Buick. "OK lady, how big is it?"
She makes a circle with her hands about 3 1/2 inches in diameter.
"What does it do?," we asked.
She said, "I don't know but its always been there."
One of us gave her a note pad and asked her if she could draw a picture of it. So she makes a circle about 3 1/2 inches in diameter and in the center she writes 710.
The guys behind the counter are looking at it upside down as she writes it...and they just fall down behind the counter laughing so hard in hysterics.
One guy said " I think you want an oil cap."
She said, "Seven Ten cap, oil cap, I don't care what you call it, I just need one, and I don't see what is so damn funny about it."
Yes, she was a blonde.
Note: Read "710" upside down

A semi-local DVD rental store has gone out of business and they were selling off their remaining inventory of DVDs and LDs. They used to be big in LDs, so they still had quite a selection. The DVDs were 50% off the list price (not too many deals), and then 90% off list price on the LDS. I went a bit nuts and picked up over 45 LDs at this place. I only bought 3 DVDs: Career Opportunities (WS), Meet The Feebles, and The Matrix Revisited.
Amazingly enough, they were selling the AC-3 Titanic LD for $5 (after discount). There were quite a few LD bargains. I basically treated the LD prices as rental fees - just didn't have to return the LDs after I watch them.
I did pick up some Hong Kong LDs: God of Gamblers 1 and 2, Bullett In The Head, Once a Thief, Full Contact, Drunken Master 2, Police Story, Bruce Lee flick with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, some dts LDs (Jackal, Red Corners, Firestorm, Dusk Till Dawn), some rental fare: Gia, Sabrina, Spellbound, Inventing The Abbotts, Two Girls and a Guy, Surviving Picasso, Cat People, Kalifornia, When We Were Kings, Celebrity, Wings of the Dove; and a handful of Babylon 5 LDs.
The sale is going on until they run out of stock or April 30th. I'm going back there during lunch to pick up a few more LDs if they are still there.

Hi guys!
Well we had a absolute great long weekend of fun at the horseshoe tourny. Unfortunately my partner and I didn't win the plaque tourny so I had to say goodbye to my plaque.
We did win 2nd place though. :D Got our money back and some.
One of the guys that won had been playing in another league for 11 years and never had his name on that plaque. We invite him to our 2nd tourny and he carries the plaque home. Seeing how he's a really good friend....we were tickled pink for him. Guess I'll just have to wait until the fall tourny to try to win the plaque back. I'll have to look at that blank space on my wall for at least 6 months.
Later that night we played our single elimination tourny where anyone can enter. Some of them laughed because I got drew up with the only female that entered. She had never thrown a horseshoe in her life. Of course no one thought we had a chance. We smoked 'em big time. Won the jackpot.....only paid 1st place. I couldn't believe it and neither could most everyone else. So that partially made up for the loss of the plaque.
At any rate, it was a great weekend of fun and grazing.

Morning all! "What you Say?"
Trev, I have always liked the look of the Denali, however I notice the Envoys a lot more these days as a good looking ride. I would say the Envoy :D
I would bet the compilation of the 10 most wanted would include a wide ranging demographics of people from students to oldfolks. So I don't think it would actually represent the what the top 10 of the TTP would want :P How can that be accurate if the Corvette, M3, Viper and Saturn was not in it?

Pl@: The Bruce Lee flick is Game of Death I thought most places liquidated their LDs long time ago. Of course the chinese rental places around here still carry quite a few LDs. Those are some pretty great deals!
Pr@: Wow looks like the HT room is coming along. I need to put some 710 in my car. :)
Trev: I like the looks of the Envoy.
Sonnie: Sounds like a great time, you'll have to bring that plaque home next time. Nice move on letting the other guy take home that plaque. I tell you it does something when you see your name on a plaque, or take home a bunch of trophies.
Lex: Hope you feel better soon.
Kevin: For ultimate audio bliss at work, I've hear that people spend big bucks on headphones and headphone amps. I hear the Grado's are the ones to get, then get a headphone amp, then just find a nice CD transport and get some custom CATS and your done.
Bing: I was wondering the same thing. No BMW, Ferrari or Porche? I wonder if that's the most stolen list?
Well in less than 2 weeks my wife's going on a nice vacation to Shanghai and then to Hong Kong. She'll be gone for a month, which is the longest time we'll ever be seperated since we started going out in '93. So it'll be weird around home, hell who am I kidding, ref level movies are in store. ;) Seriously, this is a well deserved vacation, after 9+ years in a government job, she decided to take the severance package, and will be looking to branch off into her own business when she gets back.
OK, TTP V finally closed for good :) thoose lazy moderators... :P

Look out folks, wild programmer is on the loose! He is armed and dangerous! If you see him, shoot to kill! haha. Pr@'s "710 cap" post gave me an idea to incorporate a "1D-10T" error message in one of our products. Here's a sample screen shot, which would pop up when Miss Pointy-haired attempts to log in:
http://kpatz.home.attbi.com/id10t.gif
In case you're wondering, the "User credential verification" refers to the fact that she/it's not qualified for her own job. No response from management object, well hey, she's the management object who never gives us specs to work with!
I don't know if I'm quite brave enough to actually check this change in or include it in the next build. You see, she has some strange lapses in her sense of humor! :E Of course I can tell her that we never got specs from her that said this message shouldn't have been added!
Paul, I'll have to check into the Grado 'phones. Don't know if it's worth the trouble, but hey, I could have the coolest Cubicle Audio System in the whole building! :B

Kevin: Check out http://www.headphone.com for those expensive headphones and amps. I'm sure you could probably find a use Rega Planet as a transport. :) You'll have to check out the following tube headphone amp, only $329, image at home:
http://www.headphone.com/productphotos/0010030000frontbig.JPG
Or you could splurge and go for this:
http://www.headphone.com/productphotos/0020089090frontbig.JPG
Sennheiser Orpheus HE-HEV90
The pinnacle of headphone listening, the Orpheus delivers the sound you'd expect form only the highest quality audiophile components. Highs are detailed and articulate, mids smooth as silk and bass so tight and realistic you be tapping your foot along with the music. The electrostaic headphone matches up perfectly with the tube amp. It looks as good as it sounds.
Keys??? You'll need the supplied keys to turn this baby on. Once you do the warm glow of tubes relaxes while the supurb sound finishes the job, taking you to the heights of musical ecstacy. To top it all off the amp will take optical digital or digital or Analog inputs. It comes equiped with its own D/A converter though it is the weakest point of the system. The volume knob sits on the front leg of the amp and is as smooth as a volume control gets. Two headphones can be used with the amp so sharing the bliss is easy but not inexpensive - the headphone is half the price of the unit. Only $11,900, note CD player is not included.

Good going Pat! Sounds like you made off with quite the haul.
I managed to find some proper acoustic insulation for the bottom half of my room which made me happy since I was told the real theatershield stuff wasn't available to canada. On the other hand this stuff is twice what I'd budgeted for that component of the room...oh well you only get to build it once so you might as well do it right.

CD player? No problem. I have one in my PC, I'll just hook the soundcard into the tube amp! Then I could listen to MP3s through it too! I'll have to get some SilverCats for it too! Say Lex, can you put a 1/8" stereo miniplug on one end of a pair of Silvercats? :)

Hey Guys!!
Cool Andrew!,,
Didn't take long to start renovating the new home.
Now that's motivation...
Lex,,Hope the poke in the ole butt was worth it. 8O 8O
Paul,,Nice RPTV,,we are looking at the same type for upstairs in the new house.
It will fit into the entertainment unit which is made to fit a 36" TV.
However, the 43" RPTV's are actually cheaper than the 36" hdtv's. So it;s has become a no-brainer...get the 43". :oh:

Hey fellers....
My computer here at work crashed yesterday right after I posted and it's taken me until about an hour ago to get it going. I had to re-install windows 4 times. My winsock got corrupted somehow and what a mess it made. I couldn't get my TCP/IP to work until I finally figured out I had to delete the winsock from the registry. Nightmarish!
Really like that RPTV Paul. Nice flip! Wish I could tag that Toshiba.
Lex, hope you are feeling better bro. Sounds like a nasty one. And one of the ole shots to the rearside...ouch! I've had a touch of sinus stuff but nothing like what you got for sure.
I'm still trying to recover from the long weekend. I really need another day off to catch up on rest. Thankfully tomorrow is my off day and I get to sleep late. :D

Well, hey guys. Coming to you live from my landline. I lost my satellite signal, and can't seem to find it again. :( Even though I didn't feel like doing it, I adjusted on that damn thing for 2 hours today. Had it up above 50 once, and damnit, didn't stop, until I screwed the pooch. Crap. Now, it looks like a total re-install is in order, including a new cemented in ground post to mount on. Man, I wanted to avoid that.
Still a bit puny, but getting better, slowly. Of course, I didn't probably help myself out messing around with that stinkin satellite dish. I tried everything to get it back above the required 30, and can't do it. Post movement isn't helping. It's simply got to change to a more stationary pole.
Bummer on the puter problems Sonnie.
Trev, wasn't really worth it when it started hurting me last night and today, lol.

Howdy folks!
Glad to hear Mom and son are doing great Erik! And the house too!
I was looking back at some older TTPs (TTP III this time), just to see what we were discussing back then. Pretty much the same stuff we're discussing now, except for me of course, back then I had an Alaska trip to look forward to. Now things are pretty quiet so I have nothing new to post, hence my relative lack of, uh, posts here! :)
I guess I'm gonna have to upgrade something so I have something to talk about, but it ain't in the budget right now, and I don't really have anything that needs upgrading right now anyway (except of course making progress on my ultimate goal of having all my interconnects to be of the meowing variety!) :) But then that goes back to that "budget" thing again...Glad to see TTP moving along....I'm working on getting some new members so Lex doesn't start spamming me with advertising or something! LOL....If that happens I would have to stop buying CAT products since I refuse to do business with anyone who spams me! Besides, I don't think Lex would want his email posted here as a "Tasteless Spam" post, would he!?? ;)
Speaking of Spam, a lot of the spam I get at work is SO tasteless that I won't even post it on here! Let's just say I'd have to censor them pretty heavily to post them on a public forum! 8O

I've just ordered a docking station for the laptop and will probably pair it with a 15" LCD.
The upgrade to the 43" RPTV is now being put off for the moment. I'll be looking to do some computer upgrades instead.
I've got a 40Gig HD that I've got to install and then cofig to dual boot Win2K and Win98. Then I'm going to get an ATI 8500 video card, a LG CDRW/DVD drive and a 15" LCD for my second monitor. This should complete my computer upgrade. If afterall that, I'm not happy with the performance, I'll pickup an AMD system, probably a XP1800 and pair it with a Solteck DRV5 MB, and 256M PC2700 ram and swapin the parts I just bought.
It would probably be easier if I just config a whole new system and be done with it, but I'd like to go through the process of building and installing. Though I'm still wondering if I should even bother.
Pr@: Nice flip.

The HT room doesn't really need paper/paint at this point, especially compared to other rooms in the house. The bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and living room could use some fresh coats, however.
As time and $$$ permit (both are scarce) we'll be addressing these rooms, one by one.
Speaking of upgrades, I wonder when my driver upgrade will be shipping from SVS. I emailed them a week ago and they were supposed to be getting a shipment of drivers that week, but I still haven't gotten a ship notice. I might have to drop them another note, but then I hate to be a pain in the butt. :)

The new SVS is amazing. Movies have a new "feeling" to them. I feel and heard things in the same movie I had not experience pre-SVS days. The only problem is my receiver is sending a weird signal to the amp that makes it "pop" while calibrating and switching sources. I'm going to reset the processor to see if that fixes it, but if not, then it's off to the fix-it shop. I'm waiting for my 950 anyway....
As to the time value money probs!!! NO FREAKIN' WAY! I'm not really enjoying my finance class but it's probably lack of sleep that accounts for 99% of that! LOL
All is good though, I'm truly blessed and as a bonus I get to come here to TTP and share it with you fine fellas!!! 8)

Rick: Whacha trying to do tempt me? It's working. :) Are you looking to sell both or just one? Oh, and then I need to get in on the SVS driver tradeup, and I need to get myself an amp. I just saw one on PartsExpress for US$135 that looks promising:

Andrew - With that logo on the banner, I hope they don't think you're a quack. :>) (Yeah, yeah, I know what it is actually for, and it's a good cause, too...)
David - Knowledge (such as "how to safely pick up and/or move a heavy object") is useless unless you actually use it... :>) hope those muscle relaxants/pain killers do the job for your out of whack back -- can you sit in your comfy Broadways and watch movies or are you confined to to bed rest for the duration?
Lex -- If someone started up a thread about Maggies being replaced by an "upgrade" to Bose, we'd KNOW it was either a satire or a prank -- and if it was supposedly signed by Andrew, there would be no doubt it was both... :>)
Erik -- furniture "hand me downs" can be a blessing or a curse -- depending on how well they fit in to what you need and how well it fits in with what you already have (or have space for)... hope the new acquisiitions work out well for you. getting an uninterupted night's sleep must be a real treat after months of not having them!) Glad the family is doing well.
Paul -- by 15" LCD are you refering to an external flat panel monitor plugged into the docking station? I am using a Philips 15" LCD flat panel monitor and find it far better than the 15" LCD flat panel built into my DEll laptop (which I used to think was pretty good until I compared them side-by-side) ... sounds like a good upgrade.
12 hours may be a big gap, but it still seems like every time I check in here a couple of pages have been added regardless of how long or short a time I've been away... :>)

Burke, the furniture is actually quite nice. It's Thomasville, if you're not familiar with them....let's just say I checked out a comparable set and I'd be paying around 5K+ for what gramps gave us. All I have to do is re-apolster SP? (ya know put new seat fabric on) the seats and it'll look spankin new! The rest of the stuff he gave us is ok, but we felt that since he wanted to give things away we'd take them (it makes him happy to do so), even if we don't end up keeping it.
Wish gramps had a DLP Projector, screen, and a couple extra amps lyin' around!

Hole is dug, took about 40 minutes I guess. 2 feet deep, at least, and about 6 inches all the way around a 6 X 6 pole BTW, that's a helluva pressure treated timber! 6" X 8 feet. Cost me 17 bucks for that stick. This all is to avoid putting lag bolts into my brick house. I really don't like things attached to my house, unless it's totally unavoidable. So, phase 1 complete. Starting phase 2 after I rest a few minutes, lol. Mixing morter. Now that's fun! :-)
Lex
and yes, I do have a level. :) actually 2. 1 large one, and one very small one. Trust me, that small one comes in VERY handy. Not only that, it has a magnetic edge. It's not the right one for this job, but many times, it is the only one you can use. :) For example, leveling the mast on the satellite dish arm. It's perfect. Even sticks to the pole.
Yeah, gonna throw a level on it before I mix and pour, and then again after I pour, then check it in a couple of hours, since I don't have a frame built to hold it in place. Right now, the pole is sitting in the hole on it's on. That's the good thing about 6" square, it's easier to do that. It also has to be fairly level to sit like that.

The AWD V6 VUE starts around $23K or so. The entry-level model (FWD, 4 cylinder 5-speed manual) starts at under $16K, but you'll want to add options to it to make it worth having (such as power windows).
Not bad for a SUV, but still out of my modest price range at this point. I don't need a SUV anyway so it doesn't matter.
I've seen a couple of them on the road already, both of them the AWD model, so it's probably selling better than the cheap one.
BTW, Saturn has announced a new small car (the ION) for the 2003 model year. Here's a web site (http://www.2003ion.com).

Lex, what do you need a concrete hoe for? I always thought you just poured the quickcrete into the hole...added a little water and twala. The next morning it's all there, nice and solid. Some folks don't even add water...they just let the moisture in the ground take care of it. Of course that's the hillbilly way. I forget you're in the city. The professional way may be more appropriate for you. lol
GregS.....good choice on the DVD (SD-4700)....that's what I just got a few months back. Although I don't enjoy the progressive scan part yet, it sure is good in all other aspects. So far so good with no hangups.

For you non-construction sort of guys, a concrete hoe is a hoe with a rather large blade, and 2 holes in the middle of it so that the concrete can flow through the rake. Helps in the mixing process.

ok as promised here the latest pics of the wall and gear rack....
Here's the wall from the office side at the bottom of the stairs. this side is only a single layer of drywall and it will get mudded, taped then painted. Eventually I'm going to build a large "U" shaped desk in here.
http://www.mts.net/~glendap/1.jpg
Here's the wall from the HT room. This wall is insulated and has a double layer of drywall on the HT side to help keep the noise out of the rest of the house. I still have to work on sealing up the space able the drop down ceiling but that will occur once I get the lights wired in. If you look closely you can see the light switch box beside the door frame.
http://www.mts.net/~glendap/2.jpg
Here's a roughed in gear and media racks ressesed into the wall. Its the same two racks I'd made before only combined into a single unit. I'll have gear on the the top's of both racks so I don't have to bend over anymore to put a cd into the megachanger and the drawers will house my DVD collection. They used to have all the empty jewel cases in them but since I never use them I'm going to put them into a box that can hide under the couch for those times I want to reference something etc. The space you see behind the rack is my work bench...though right now most of the mess is on the other side of the wall:) The IB sub will sit just to the left of the gear rack.

Andrew -- The rooms are shaping up nicely -- the recessed equipment racks are nice touch. (I'm assuming you can easily get to them from the area behind them?) Keep at it, and pretty soon you'll be able to move in the equipment and furniture and start enjoying movies and music in your dedicated space!

Andrew, your room is shaping up nicely :)
Just wondering how you are going to seal the back of the equipment rack (since your IB will be right next to it) and still have easy access? removable panel? weatherstripped door?

Morning folks! TGIF!! This post was delayed slightly due to technical difficulties, as in the company firewall, which usually crashes at least once a day, decided to start the day "already crashed". So I had to wait for someone to reboot it. Wonderfully reliable company resources...
Lex, need Viagra? I get spammed offers for it all the time! I need it like I need a hole in the ground, er, I mean head!
Trev, never heard of a Pontiac Vibe(s). If it looks anything like the A$$tek, no thanks! :)
Speaking of arfin-ugly vehicles, when I was out on my bike last night I saw a Saturn (an older model), with one of those fugly metal spoilers (you've probably seen 'em, the tall aluminum-looking ones) attached to the trunk lid, a coffee-can tail pipe and low-profile tires. EEWWWW! That's as bad as tattooing and piercing all your body parts! It's worse than pan & scanning Ben Hur! At least show some respect and paint the spoiler the color of the car!! My stomach's turning just thinking of it.
Pr@, sounds like the room is coming along great! I can't wait until we build our next house, so we can do cool stuff like recessed component racks and IB subs. Speaking of which, my friend is thinking of doing a IB, and he has a similar setup with a gear closet behind the front of the room. However, his shelves are open in the back so that would require some creative sealing off of a section to do an IB that way. I mentioned doing the IB in the attic, and he liked that idea, but then with attic ventilation would the neighbors hear all the bass? I'll have to ask the experts. :)

Yes I have access to the gear from behind since that's the laundry/work shop area. I plan on extending the back of the rack by a foot or so then building a door with weather stripping so that its sealed but still allows for easy access to all the wires etc. Its going to be so nice to be able to actually work behind the gear instead of always reaching round from the side. Hopefully I'll finish putting on the second layer of drywall on the short side of the wall and maybe just maybe start adding the wall treatments!

Andrew, I'm impressed and a tad jealous. Dang I wish I could build my own HT room. Maybe one day.
I'm curious about the IB sub location. Don't you think you need to test it in that location before you commit to it? I mean, you're going all out here for the perfect HT room it looks like. Then again you may not have a whole lot of choices when it comes to location on an IB sub.
And did you say that was the laundry room behind the rack? I'm thinking dust on the rear of the equipment????? You know how some laundry rooms can be. While not bad, over time it could be?
Moving along really good. I know you're having lots of fun.

Okay, I got interrupted during my post and you posted Andrew. I understand what you are doing on the rear of the rack now. Good idea. Similar to what I've done except my room behind my rack is my service room. You will definitely like the rear access. I've had mine that way for over 10 years now (previous and current house) and love it.

hmm seems my ISP is giving me problems b/c those images no longer show up? Weird. Sonnie I do have concerns about the location of the sub but I don't have too many choices other then behind the last row of seating and it would be safer if it were located in the corner of the workshop then where we have our storage shelving etc. I'll likely need a BFD anyway to tame things out but I won't know how good/bad it is till I do some freq plots. At least now I can play with the built in eq in the Sony as well to tame anything above 300 hz.

I forget, was it 28 or 29 we run from? ;)
Actually, we do need a concensus on that. As you may recall, Mr. Anal retentive, I mean Mr. Pratt didn't like the suggested 31 on. So, we now fumble around between 32-34 for the flip.
I would like a vote now. 31 on, 33 on?, or 34 on?
We need to make this decision. While you all are thinking, I will be putting my dish back up. Or in other words using the pole. That's right, it's hard, really hard. hahahaha.
One thing about it. That pole isn't coming out of that hole very easily now, if I ever want it out, lol. No in, out, in out. ;)

Kevin: Ha, ha, no improvement necessary.
Anybody have anythoughts on a Yamaha 3000 for a delivered price of $1,760? I'll post that in a more conspicous area.
So flipping from 34 on, that would be more challenging. So I vote for 34.

Very nice Yam-e-haw Paul. I've always admired their receivers. Actually I still own an older Yamaha pre-amp. CX-800U (not for sure on that model but it's something 800 something). Been sittin' up in my closet for several years. It was their flagship pre-amp at one time.
Andrew, are you gonna have a step-by-step DIY page for your new HT room. That would be a cool addition to your website.

http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
Finally, hot damn, I got my satellite signal locked on!!! You wimps that have only locked a directv signal, ain't seen nothing until you try to lock a DirecPC signal. My gosh, is it tough.
In total frustration after an hour of adjusting and getting no higher than a 16 signal strength, I called a satellite store to see if they could come out and find my signal.
Then, as I cooled off, fixed some left overe pizza, the brain finally started working. I thought about what to do, then scarfed down the pizza and went to work.
So, I got my laptop out, a long a$$ extension cord to my outbuilding power, a power strip for distribution, a stool to sit the laptop on, my satellite receiver, a spare piece of Quantum Coax. (I know, overkill, but it was the closest thing handy), a USB cable, and of course, power cords for both the laptop and satellite receiver, and hooked it all up. Within seconds, I sweeped across a 40-50 signal strength, and started the adjustments. Sometimes, you tweek the slightest way, and boom, it goes to zero. So, it's a very particular operation. Even just flexing the dish one way or another with your finger can mean 10 signal strength. As you start to tighten bolts down, sometimes, it tries to undo progress, and you have to tweak one way or the other pulling, pushing, etc...
NEVER again will I try to adjust it without the laptop procedure by myself. Even with someone, so much is lost in communication, that the laptop is likely still better.
I am locked on 52-55 right now. 30 is the minumum. Strangely, I once had a 70-78. I have no idea how it ever was that high, unless they have reduced the signal being sent or by more people locking on, it somehow reduces it.
Anyway, Whew, I am back! Finally, my email outgoing should work again. I never knew quite how much I would miss broadband until being without the last 2 days.

Yeah, I believe we do have phase adjustments. I'm not sure if it's variable or 180 degree switch. But even if we didn't you could just swap the leads on the sub since it's in the rear....you'll probably just need the 180 degrees. Then again I've heard of stranger things.
Let me know when you need the 360.

Lex it sounds like you've been havin' fun my friend. Yeah, Dish and DirecTV I've never had problems dialing in. I've heard horry stories about the satellite Internet though. Seems like I remember that's why Dish's Starband will not let anyone but their authorized installers set up their sats. DirecPC must be a little different on the install allowing you to do it yourself (or did you actually do it the first time?).
EDIT: Isn't that satellite to the south Lex? If so all this weather may be causing a poorer signal. Very high altitude weather is rolling in from the south.

If it's one way satellite (using dial-up for the uplink), there should be no problem installing it yourself--it'll be just like satellite TV. If it's two-way, then it has to be professionally installed, since if you botch it up you could be transmitting to the wrong satellite and causing problems!

DirecPC offers the same type service as Starband now. But the original was the dial return system (1 way).
Kevin is right, the 2 way system requires professional installation. But the one way doesn't. Mine is a 1 way system. However, one advantage of the 1 way system is, if the satellite portion is having problems, I can convert to only using the dial up portion for 2 way communication. That gives you a backup. Plus it's cheaper up front, and cheaper to install.

Nice receiver. I enjoyed a Yamaha DSP-A3090 (technically not a receiver, but an integrated amp, however I had the matching tuner which used the same remote, so it might as well have been) for several years before I went with separates...
Geez -- we get a new page and all of a sudden no one gives a flip anymore about what post number we are going to agree to do the "run" from (until we get up to 30 again, I'll bet) :>) -- so how do we actually "vote" on this?

Good Morning!
TGIS!!
I am off for this weekend.
Been a while since I had a weekend off. :(
Plans are too continue the quest for new furniture.
Paul,,Does the tosh 43" do the anamorphic squeeze?
Andrew,,I agree..the yahmmy's sound pretty bright..loaded with lots of features..but those artificial DSP modes do nothing for me.
Nice job on the HT..Wow!! that is fast.
Lex,,Glad you where able to get the dish locked in..:T
They can be pretty nasty!
I will soon have three to do myself.
I am fortunate as my signal strengths are a decent 78-83, except for the HD bird,,only 35,,however I have not tried any extensive tweeking since it was only one channel that's available.
At the new place my concern will be the wiring part of it.
not sure how I will be able to wire up all of the rooms like I do now.
As for the Fliperoo!!,,As before let's start the run at 33.
This allows for some intense snipping to occur.
Plus,, the page is hard to read once it get's to the bottom anyways.... ;)
Hope everybody has agreat weekend and can spend some time with the family! :D
Now where is that guy named Bing!? :P

Stopped by the Rock Man yesterday evening, and picked up some big a$$ rocks for my flower bed. Well, I got 50.00 worth. It's a start. I am tired of fighting bermuda in the mulch, since I already killed my shrubs putting weed killer on my bed to kill bermuda, it's time for something totally different. This time, I am going to try and build a rock garden. Maybe put a water fountain in it, lava rock, that sort of thing. Should be interesting. It might take me a while to get it done, but that's ok. I will do it as I can.

Paul,,Does the tosh 43" do the anamorphic squeeze?
Trev: Yup. There's a button on the remote that will do the squeeze. There's no automatic setting like the Sony. But I've heard that the Sony isn't really autosensing. Yeah I just saw that Sony Laptop, man a 16" screen! Talk about screen envy.
The newer Yamaha's with the Top Art are supposed to sound much smoother than the previous models. I've got an older model, and is on the bright side, but I don't mind.
Pr@: Yeah the Yamaha's have tons of DSP's. But those don't interest me at all. It's the power, 6 x 100W and 2 x 25W. Those 2 are for effect speakers, which I would probably never use. I see a disturbing trend in that measured power output is coming up short from published output. Or for some receivers that I was interested in, Sony DB870, Marantz6200, Onkyo. I haven't seen a recent review for Yamaha, but the older machines were rated properly.
Looks like the HK got sold.
Last night, after about 6 hours of trying, off and on, I finally got my PC to recognize my HD. It was one of those stupid jumper settings. So is it the case that a 40G HD is actually a 30G once it's formated? Man that some serious shrinkage, and it's not even cold? I've got them partitioned to a 10G and 20G and have loaded up Win2K on the 10. Over the next little while I'll be adding software. At first I was going to have all my programs on the 20g side, but I may split that. Games on the 20G, basic software, like Office and email, etc on the 10G.
Next time I'm buying an 80G drive.
Kevin P
04-13-2002, 01:52 PM
Paul, how many total bytes do you get on the HD? When HD manufacturers rate capacity, they consider a "gigabyte" to be a billion bytes, not 1.073 billion bytes that a true gigabyte is. Therefore, my 30 GB drive reads 30,599,495,680 bytes, which translates to 28.4 GB. Sort of like monitor manufacturers claiming a monitor is 17", but the actual viewable size is 15.75".
Also, formatting takes up some overhead, especially with NTFS, so your total formatted capacity is somewhat less than the physical capacity of the drive.

Hello hello!
Man, what a day. Been fishing in our pond catching little 2 pound bass. Two older black men I'd invited over caught several brim and shellcracker. We had a blast. My wife was on the boat with me. I almost tipped us and she got really scared. lol (just had to be there)
I got the DVD Training Day on the way Trev....thanks for the heads up.
Lex, what does the 2-way set up cost with DirecPC? The only reason I haven't plunged with Starband is the $600 initial price and $60 month. If I could save a bit with DirecPC I might give it a try here at home. I'm on top of a hill too, good view any direction.
Catching all those fish today got us motivated to eat seafood tonight. We're headed off to a small town 30 miles from here to eat at a little hole in the wall restaurant. It only seats about 35 people. Then there's the waiting in line. But it's much worth it.
You fellows have a wondermous evening! :) :) :)

Thought my DirecTV wasn't working after the satellite move. I said, crap! It's' supposed to be automatic. After phone calls to directv and direcpc, (ouch, the wait and options!), I found that a coax on the directv was stressing at the connection. Bent it up a little bit, and boom, there was my signal. :)
So, I will likely have to put a new coax end on it, and it's good as new. Not a problem.
Working on cables, finished a 30 foot RGB-Sync cable, that's truly a thing of beauty. Built a pair of Silvercats, got all those cooking. Tonight, finish 2 sub cables, and build a pair of Quantum Silver Centauri's, and my orders are done for first of week shipping. Except for a pair of super duper speaker cables I need to build. Might get those done tomorrow.

How loud is that HTPC with all those fans in it?
Well my wall is for the most part finished now I just have a little trimming to finish along the door and its done! I started pulling out all the ceiling tiles last night so that I can paint them dark grey...I tired painting them when they were still above my head but it wasn't working too well:)
We also managed to get the livingroom and hall way primed yesterday (5 hour job) and today we're starting with the first coat of paint...we're going to use two shades of bronw and rag the second off for a subtle mottled look.

Trevor when the X200 series came out from marantz there was a lot of interest in them but very quickly people were finding all sorts of bugs with them I haven't heard much lately about them so I'm not sure that they are completely fixed or not...i'd be cautious about buying one if I were you.

Andrew, the only fan of the 2 that is loud is that PCI slot fan. Of course, the power supply and CPU have fans, but they are fairly quite.
As soon as I check the temperatures good, as long as they were well below thresholds, I may remove that turbo fan that's on the PCI slot.
How come primer anyways. I thought the only time you truly need to primer is when it's fresh drywall. Or your covering a very dark color.
All I got was a not found on the boob test.

Thanks Trev, and thanks for the reminder that I am "close" to 5K mark! I knew it was coming a while back, but hadn't really looked recently.
Thanks on the PC. It's been interesting for sure. Bad thing is, only does DD, no DTS. :( The picture is rather stunning once the player gets warmed up. Nagging audio dropouts are a problem though.
This is my first true ground up PC. It's been a fun, though expensive project. Hopefully, now that I have my satellite woes fixed, I will have some time soon to play around with recording with the machine which is one of the main reasons I built it.
Have a great day folks. Off to the mall to have lunch with daughter and family. Then it's back to the shop for some work, and a bit of the Masters later today.

Doug we're painting a light beigh colour over a very robust (read ugly) green colour that's turning out to be a real bitch to cover. So far we've got a coat of primer and a coat of the the beigh and it still needs another coat to really cover it all since there's spots that aren't as covered as we'd like.
Trevor the bugs in the marantz were todo with video switching for one which may or may not be important...don't remember what the others were but from my memory they were serious enough that people were returning them and looking for something else to buy.
That boob test link seems to add a to the end of the url for some reason even though its not in the original link...mats got any thoughts on this? If it doesn't work just remove the and hit enter again.

Got the HT door painted dark grey and took out most of the ceiling tiles...paint isn't going to work on them so I guess spray paint is the next option.
http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
LOL Trev. :)
Andrew,
Paint will likely work on those Andrew, but there's a trick. There's a product called "renewzit", that fills in the pours on various surfaces. For example, if you have a water spot on sheetrock, renewzit allows you to cover that spot with one coat of paint, after applying renewzit. I am betting, that it would enable you to paint accoustic tile as well.
I know my parents painted some of a material that is very close to that, and I bet renewzit is how they did it. Though I can't recall for sure, as they contracted the job.

Uh, Lex, isn't it bad luck to be caught hanging with 4999 posts?? :)
How's everyone doing today? I'm doing fine, all things considered (e.g. I'm typing this from my padded cell). :) Gorgeous weekend, I was even going to ride my bike in to work this morning but it rained last night and it was too wet this morning. Oh well, it's supposed to hit 80+ the next couple of days (unusual for April in NH), so I can't wait! I might have to uh, arrange to be sick those days! :)
Cleaned out the tool shed yesterday, that took all day. Pulled the grill out as well, got some propane, and had a little cookout. That was fun. If this keeps up maybe we'll have the pool open early this year!
Otherwise, not too much going on...

I got some free preview passes to the new Sandra Bullock movie, Murder by Numbers. It'll be on tonight, so I'll try and do a review, this is one movie I wanted to see, so these passes were pretty cool. I got them by signing up to the Famous Players newsletter (http://www.famousplayers.ca/my_fp_subscribe.asp). They send you theater schedules for 3 theaters in your area.
Had a new temp person start today, and it was one of those things, we both said we looked familiar but haven't quite placed where we know each other. Weird.
Had a very lazy weekend. Wathced some of the Masters, watched some CART racing. Messed with the computer some more. I also pickedup the new Diana Krall:Live in Paris DVD, only sampled a few tracks, but it looks and sound great! I also had a chance to play some Rallisport on the Xbox. Man that is one fun game, I think I'm going to rent an Xbox over a weekend and have my fill. :)
Alias
This is by far my favourite show of the season. Another packed episode, though my wife did guess who the Snowman was before the end. 24 is a close second to best TV show this season. The episodes after hour 12 have been inconsistent, but I'm hoping for a tight finish.
Trev: That's a sweet looking receiver. I recall that there were some audio dropouts as well. But these were for the 7200 and lower. Sounds like the 8200 is a nice machine to get. Now you got me looking at it. Didn't fare to well on the boobie test. I'm like Pr@, without feeling, it's pretty tough. ;)

Well, those maggies are one. The other is an older add for a Sony 555ES (http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=4028&query=retrieval) The guy selling it is only about an hour drive away.
Ambitious computer upgrade planned for the weekend. I'll be installing a LG CDRW/DVD drive, an ATI 8500 card, and a Celeron 1.1G with adapter, and a second monitor. The thing that's got me a bit concerned is flashing my bios. After that, I'll basically have a brand new computer. I've very tempted to pickup an OEM SB 5.1 card. But if I do, I'll want to setup a 5.1 system in the computer room. At present I've got an old set of Cambridge PC works 4.1 computer speakers. The sound quality is pretty poor. I'm thinking of moving my bedroom receiver to the computer room and hooking up my B&W 301's.
Thanx Paul. You getting the All in Wonder? Or do they even differentiate at the 8500 level? I don't recall... Congrats on the upgrades.
Flashing the bios isn't really a huge deal, you just need a win98 startup disk to get to an A prompt, then do what they say to do, executing the floppy process.
So far, my 7500 is pretty nice. Wish I had consideed DTS though. I think my sound card will handle DTS, but so far, I haven't been about to get it to work.

Trevor -- sounds like you hang on to used gear the way I do -- I have the equivalent of three non-working systems in my back room (components stacked up for storage) and a pair of Def Tech BP-2000s are working as plant stands these days in the main HT. (I had planned to keep using them for movie playback after I got the Maggies for music -- but then I listened to a movie soundtrack via the Maggies and the BP-2000s retired at that point.) :>)

Ambitious computer upgrade planned for the weekend.I have a computer "upgrade" planned as well. Get this, when I was cleaning out my tool shed I stumbled across an old TRS-80 Model III that I had picked up for $25 years ago. I never really did much with it because the keyboard is shot, but I plugged it in and it still boots up from the floppy, so I decided I'm going to try to find a keyboard for it. I looked on ebay but no one is selling a keyboard, but I may drop a bid on another Model III or Model IV and use it for parts. I'd like to clean up one of these babies (I grew up on TRS-80s) and have it as a fun toy.

I agree on 24, while still a great show (it's been my favorite, even ahead of Alias), something needs to happen to tighten up the show. I'm wondering too if they will have another 24 season starting in the Fall. It could be hard to follow/top the first 24 hours.

You got most of those "Fives" right. But we are shooting for 5 minumtes apart on those orders, at which point I will tell my day job to take a flying leap. lol. That would be promptly after I screamed, like the people on the commercial waiting for orders to come in, then they start to trickle, then they start really flowing, until finally, it's a constant blur of activity. At that point, him and his associates give each other that "oh shit" now what do we do, look. Someday, I truly expect that to happen. Maybe not on that scale. Lex: I'm only looking at the 'basic' 8500 there's several models including an All in Wonder. Though that would be cool, but dragging cable into the room is not something I'd like to do. The All in Wonder 8500, goes for something like $540! The All in Wonder 7500 is more reasonable, $290, but it doens't support dual monitors, only 1 monitor and TV out. I really want dual monitor support, next is good DVD playback, so ATI is it, next is cost. So either the 7500 or the 8500.
Sonnie: "Cause she's always right" She guessed when Sydney was doing the debrief with Vaughn, at first I though she meant that Vaughn was Snowmand, I said no way, but she later cleared that up saying no, the other guy. I just tossed up a bid on Ebay for a TRS-80 Model 4. If I win, I'll have to decide whether to use it or my Model III as a parts machine to fix up the other. In any case, I'll have a cool "vintage computer" to play with!!
All my Model III needs is a keyboard. The Model 4 I bid on has a minor monitor problem, which I may be able to fix (hey, if I can set up a CRT FPTV, I should be able to fix a Trash-80 monitor, right?).

we were clearing out some old Pentium PC's today so I picked up a couple of older IBM Pentium's. I'll keep one for the DSS emulator and sell the other. They were also selling of some old laser printers cheap...was temped to grab one but they are huge and older so maybe not worth the effort

Something tells me you will win that auction Kevin, lol.
Andrew, good deal, so your going ahead with the DSS plan, ey?

Oh well, someone outbid me on the Model 4. I upped my bid a couple of times but this other guy kept upping theirs as well. I stopped at $20, didn't want to pay more than that plus shipping, and he outbid me again with a minute remaining, so I figured I'd be "nice" (definitely a weakness of mine!) and let him win.
I'll try again another time. I don't need a Model 4.

Pr@: Nice cpu purchases. Good decision not to buy the older printers. We've got an older HP4V that's been
with the company forever, but last year we had to do some repairs that cost us around $700.
Kevin: Don't those TRS80's have an adaptor to hook into your TV? :) So you don't really need a monitor.
Bing: How long are you staying in Calgary? Have a good trip.
Howdy fellas,

Paul, you're thinking of the TRS-80 Color Computer. It hooked up to a TV. It was also the computer I cut my teeth on. There's a bunch of them on ebay, I might have to get me one again so I can really bring back memories.
The Model III, which is what I have in my shed, and the Model 4 I unsuccessfully bid on has a built in monitor. The monitor works fine on my III, I just need a keyboard, and parts for these beasts are a bit hard to come by these days.

Now Lex, that's a really cool, er, well make it "hot" flip.
Lex, I was talking about you Saturday to my wife as I poured sacrete into a hole around our Martin birdhouse pole. I told her we really needed a concrete hoe. She asked me what a concrete hoe was, I told I didn't know but you said it came in handy with your pole. She just looked at me funny and said: "You don't need no hoe for your pole hunny."
Btw, what's a Honda Trail 50?
Paul, I was suspicious of him when he paused on sticking her with the knife. He had her where he wanted her at the time. Then Sidney had this really funny look on her face while he was laying on the floor, as if she knew whose face was under the mask, but I still wasn't sure. Good guess on your wife's part though. You know for a minute when they departed on the beach I thought maybe she was gonna end up taking him up on the "give me one week" offer. Maybe have a show or two with them looking for her mother together. So much for that thought.

Sonnie: When she was looking at his body, if you look closely enough, you could just see the bandage on his arm. I think that's why she had a funny look on her face, right before she unmasked him. During the computer data heist, I didn't think he was too professional leaving her to hang and dangle like that. When they found out they didn't get any data off, I figured he grabbed the data and wiped the HD. I thought he was covering his tracks. Only on the airplane did I even think, "Wouldn't it be a kicker if he was the Snowman?"
Kevin: I see, the more advanced TRS's came with a monitor. You could always search for a TRS emulator for your PC, but that would ruin the fun.
Pat: How about some hail for the next day?

I found a website that claims to have TRS-80 parts, including keyboards. However, they don't have online ordering, just a price list. I sent them an email to (a) see if they still exist (the site was last updated in 2000), and to (b) see if they have the keyboard I need. If they do exist, I'll have to call them since I'm not going to email my credit card #...

You know Paul, I didn't even think about that data heist. Good point. And I didn't notice the bandage at first...it was only when she actually moved his sleeve back a little that I noticed. Dang you are very attentive to details. He sure had her fooled. Once on the plane I kinda thought he was out of the picture, but I did think about why they were just letting him off the show so easy. I thought surely SD6 was gonna blow up his plane while he was on the phone to Sidney.
Kevin, now just why would you want an old computer that's slow as malasses? lol

The verdict is don't pay money to see it. I like Sandra Bullock, but this is not one of her better movies.
Sonnie: The other tipoff at the end was the guy's breathing, it changed after he got stabbed (I bet my breath sounds would change if I ever got stabbed!) and it sounded like what his name. I also thought SD6 letting him go was a bit strange. I thought they might off him once he goes undercover. Nobody will notice he's gone.

Kevin, now just why would you want an old computer that's slow as malasses? lolTwo words Sonnie: NO WINDOWS! The "slow as molasses" TRS-80 boots up in about 5 seconds. Try to do that with your latest Wintel wonder toy! :B
Plus, old computers are fun, back then you had to know how to program (in BASIC at least) to use a computer. Nowadays everything is just handed to you on a platter, which explains why there are so many complete and utter idiots using computers these days. I'm just going back to my roots, trying to feel young again. That is, if I can find a keyboard for it. TRS-80s are hard to use when most of the keys don't work!

I mean, are you going to try and make play-doh spagetti without one of those little machines to push the play-doh through? No! It's just not going to happen nearly as accurate or as good rolling it out by hand. :)

I have been thinking about what they did to the Masters this year, and I DON'T like it! They took the course and made it so long, that only a handful of players in the world had a chance of being on the leader board. This plays right into Tiger's hands, as he is one of those few players. Look at the leader board. Only the long hitters were there.
Yes, I think you have to be the complete player to win the Masters. But I don't think that means winning the long drive contest at the driving range. It wasn't that way when Bobby Jones won, and it shouldn't be that way now. When you do anything to a course that eliminates 80% of the field from having a chance, you haven't changed the course, you have changed the game- That is not what golf is supposed to be about. I am not only shocked at what Augusta did this year, but appauled at the same time.

My quest continues. I tossed a bid on on a TRS-80 Model III, looks like one that has no floppy drives, but I don't care since all I need is the keyboard (the description says all the keys work). However, my $30 bid (no way I'm paying more for such an old machine) doesn't meet the reserve, so I don't know what this guy's thinking. We'll see what happens, maybe he'll sell it anyway. Someone else has a Model 4 with a starting bid of $200. I can't imagine why he's had no bidders!?

The PET predates the TRS-80 Model III by a few years--it came out in 1977, the same year as the original TRS-80, which subsequently became known as the "Model I".
Commodore Pet (http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/pet.html)
TRS-80 Model I (http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/trs80-m1.html), this machine used a RCA B&W TV minus a tuner as a "monitor"
