HI All,
I'm sure no one needs a synopsis of this famous movie.

SOM is one of my favorite musicals. I bought the VHS release a few years ago. The transfer was a disaster!! I was very disappointed.

So when I saw that ABC was showing SOM in HD on Sat., Dec 17 I was very lukewarm about it. But surprise, surprise! I'm sure those who saw it will agree that the presentation was great in HD and Dolby Digital.

Though remixed for DD, the surround effects were minimal at best. But unlike the VHS version, the audio was first class as was the video. I recorded it on my Sony HDD500 High Definition disk recorder so I could speed through the commercials. All in all, it was a great way to spend about three hours.

I want to commend ABC for an honest and beautiful presentation. It just doesn't get better than this.

And if anybody needed to be reminded, Julie Andrews is one of the greats.

Edited to add: This is a great motion picture, IMO. For me, it touches very deep feelings. I found myself in tears for much of the time. I don't cry easily. But this movie can touch me a way that I cannot explain.

I wanted to add this edit to remove my above comments away from the strictly technical to the context of feelings where all great art belongs.

Perhaps Maria's goodness, honesty and purity (beautifully portrayed by Julie Andrews) induces a nostalgia in you for a time when those virtues were more highly regarded?

HI Big,
Thank you for taking the trouble to respond. You seem to understand.
You may be right. But I think it is more complex than that. I feel the very breath of God driving right through my heart in every scene. All great art affects me the same whether it is a great movie, a great painting (Van Gogh), or great music (Bach). It is wonderful.
