From the "weird eBay auctions" dept... Haunted TV (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5612117750)

After reading the description, it seems to me that this guy is trying to get $500 (plus shipping) for a 19" TV/VCR combo. If it does what he claims, he's trying to sucker someone into paying $500 plus shipping for a defective 19" TV/VCR combo...  :duh:

Jason,
I do a lot of video editing, and I use Pro Tools LE for audio work. That is why I use the P4. Adobe Primere and pro tools I think require either AMD or P4 to work.

Well what a day! Sometimes I think a lot of my problems can be fixed with one well placed hand grenade!

Congrats Jason....good to see you in TV's again :T

Picked up some new stuff recently....

Went to FS and picked up the SMC barricade SuperG router with free wifi superG usbkey. The old Dlink (aka DINK) was getting flaky constantly dropping the connection so I figured why fight it....and this way I can take advantage of a faster SPI engine....parental controls 108MBps SuperG....supercool 8) (theoretical). I'd use the Dlink to extend my range (by placing it upstairs) but then I'd have to run a mixed B/G network which would negate the superG aspect (I think but I haven't gone through everything since I just quickly set things up this morning so Kathy could browse the Net to do her work....the fine tuning will come later.

http://www.smc.com/images/products/150/SMCWBR14T_G_CA.jpg

The Barricade™ g 802.11g 108Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router (SMCWBR14T-G) is the perfect networking solution for the user that is looking for a simple, all-in-one home or small office network product. This platform independent multi-functional router combines a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch with Automatic MDI-MDIX feature, a high speed 108Mbps wireless access point, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall security, Web-based network management, and support for Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through into one convenient device. For wireless connectivity, the SMCWBR14T-G offers up to 108Mbps high-speed wireless connection and is backward compatible with existing 802.11b network devices. To secure this wireless connection, the Barricade g supports 802.1x for authentication, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), MAC address filtering and 64/128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). In addition, the Barricade g has one detachable antenna that can be replaced with your choice of SMC high gain antennas for added performance and coverage.

And picked up the 9.99 after rebates  print server (LPT and USB connection).
http://www.smc.com/images/products/150/SMCBR14UP_CA.jpg

These boxes are a lot smaller then my old Dlink (the wireless G box is as small as a USB 4-port box 8) with ultra cool blue lights match my logitech speaker LED's and the silver titanium finsh matches the maxtor external drive.....very clean looking.....hopefully I'll sport a new LCD monitor by boxing day.

We dropped our old FRS (hard) and it ain't working so I picked up a new motorola GMRS with a 13km (8mi) range (as the crow flies ....line of sight). These babies are slick....haven't tried yet but my work is only 6 km away (course the buildings will probably kill that :( ....there are 19km models now out :W )
Just have to convince my SO that we can open up the package....it's from Walmart afterall. They're about $20 more than our original package but the range is 4X as great and it comes with little battery chargers....done deal in my mind....oops honey the scissors just slipped ;)

So new I can't find a pic of the 5530R's on Motorola's site ....but they kind of look like this but in silver:

They look like pretty good specs Snap but for a "smaller" laptop company that seems like an awfully steep price....

Adobe Photo Shop, Primere, Pro Tools, Macromedia Dream Weaver, those are the big boys that I use.

Well Adobe and Dream Weaver are both more memory intensive then CPU so it would really be the video stuff that makes or breaks a CPU choice. I'm also not sure I'd agree that a 5400 RPM SATA drive would best a 7200 RPM IDE as everything I've read seems to point to RPM speed being the key ...though maybe SATA has something I'm not familar with to make up the difference.

Ok came across this info that might help...

"OK, you have to remember that the limitation of getting the data off of the
media is mechanical. The "drive" as in the mechanics is kind of a seperate
issue to the controller they use to transfer that data.

For example, SCSI drives have been rotating at 10,000 RPM and 15,000 RPM for years, double what IDE drives do. The WD Raptor is effectively one of those SCSI drives but with a SATA interface. SATA provides some features over normal ATA, a small increase in maximum transfer rate is one, but not the primary concern at the moment, since most drives aren't able to reach
100MB/s sustained transfers. "

Hey Fujitsu now has an AMD based Laptop!!! :T And it looks like the big boys (Toshiba, Sony and Fujitsu) are all moving to the "mobile" chips even for their "desktop equivelant" models ;)

aud19
09-08-2005, 03:28 PM
Sorry Andrew, missed the speed comparos  Quickly skimming I missed that they were at different speeds. That's a harder question to answer then, probably more comparable speedwise then. And the IDE might even be a bit faster. I'd personally probably still go with the SATA though as the difference in performance either way would likey be small and the SATA is a newer tech which means it will be longer before it's obsolete and if heaven forbid the drive goes in a year or two would likely be cheaper and easier to replace ;)

Jason SWEET laptops. I love the price and the features. 2 more questions...

How important is it to have the 256 video card instead of the 128? Or does it matter?

What about RAM. The Fujitsu is 1 gig. Or is the 2 gig definatly worth getting?

I could probably swing the 2K price with the wife now!

Thanks guys.

aud19
09-08-2005, 04:18 PM
Well if you look at the bottom you can configure those models ;) I'd say the 128Mb video is probably enough but you can and should upgrade to the 2Gb of memory for the software you're using. Adobe graphics programs are memory hogs ;)

I'd probably get the "FPCM60402" and upgrade to the 2Gb of memory, comes to $2399 unless you need/want the TV tuner?

There's some nice Toshiba's too
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/clin.to?rcid=-26367&coid=-26368&ccid=1291021&seg=HHO&sel=0
I'd probably go with a "Satellite" or "Qosmio" model

Or Sony's "A Series"....
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_A_Series&Dept=computers
There a bit more expensive than the Fujitsu/Toshiba's though...

While on the laptop discussions, I have one question for you experts too...

Haven't used a widescreen comp display before, and I'm curious what it does for displaying software other than standard window enclosed applications. I'd like to use my next laptop for flight simulation, and I absolutely do not want the displayed image to be distorted in order to fill the screen. Will the image be displayed with vertical black sidebars or will it be stretched/chopped?

Hopefully I'll be getting a replacement sometime in late November/Early December.

EDIT: The Sager/Pro-Star laptops seem to have the best price/performance ratio. The bigname companies all seem to have inflated prices ... 8O

I'm not sure how you're getting that? Other than a couple "features" they're pretty similarly equipped and with lower base prices and $2399 for that Fujitsu seems like a pretty good price as configured....?

Besides, and this is totally up to you guys actually buying the machines but from people I know, laptops my company's bought and things I've read on the net, If I were to buy or even recommend a laptop it WILL be from one of those three companies unless I hear/see drastically different things especially regarding reliability and support. Andrew Pratt
09-08-2005, 06:15 PM
I've got two gigs of DDR2 ram in my notebook so its maxed out. For image editing though you can't beat tons or Ram and a 7200 RPM hard drive....well RAID would be sweet but unlikey to be found in a notebook :0

Snap
09-08-2005, 06:20 PM
Andrew: That is why I was looking at the Prostar. They can do dual hard drives in RAID 0 and 1 set ups. I was reading in a video editing mag that RAID1 was a no go cause it "delivers" the data in "burst" what ever that means. But any ways that being said the mag said something about being in RAID 0 configuration.

It is just the HUGE price tag! Even with discounts I am looking at almost 4K.

I'd avoid Raid in a laptop personally and if I was doing it in a desktop I'd pretty much use Raid 5 only IMHO.

Snap weight/size is another bennefit from going with the guys I mentioned :T They just tend to be lighter/smaller, better engineered and more reliable. Again IMHO.

EDIT: Fujitsu especially also tends to have better security features as well ;)

Andrew Pratt

I'm not sure how you're getting that? Other than a couple "features" they're pretty similarly equipped and with lower base pricesHmmm... I looked around and tried some configurations on some of the big-box PC companies. Couldn't configure a laptop even close to what I could for at Sager and Prostar. For instance, I'm looking at getting this one...

Sager 4881
15" SXGA+ LCD
2.0GHz Pentium M CPU (2MB/533MHz Version)
ATI Radeon X700 16x PCI-Express 256MB Video
2GB 533MHz DDR2 RAM
60.0GB 7200RPM HDD
8x DVD +/- R/RW Drive
Ethernet/802.11a/b/g Module
XP Home

$1950 includes Shipping

The only deals I could find that trumped the Sager/Pro-Stars were the big-box budget units that used Celeron M chipsets with shared video memory, XGA rez screens, 256MB RAM, etc.

Wow, TTP has become the LGT - Laptop Geek Thread. 8)

I need a new one myself. My old Dell is great, but it's, as they say, old. Takes 5 minutes to boot up.

Can't wait for this house thing to be done so I'll have time to talk geek (and HT) again... had to go over this morning with more color samples... the light beige we picked for the kitchen turned out more like pink when it was actually painted on the walls. We don't want a pink kitchen (Trevor might though ;) ), so back to the drawing board there.

Maybe someday I'll have my very own RAID 5 box. Someday. Someday I'll have something better than a stone age 25" TV too. Leaning toward Panasonic for the plasma now, since the prices dropped.

I'd avoid Raid in a laptop personally and if I was doing it in a desktop I'd pretty much use Raid 5 only IMHO.

Raid in a laptop? Ick.

Also, I'd really be careful with that statement about the desktop. To properly select the Raid-level to use, you have to look at application, data, hardware and OS characteristics. For example, R5 gives you good read rates, but you'll pay for it with a slow write rate - especially if you're striping with parity enabled.

David Meek
09-09-2005, 10:15 AM
Oh, hiya gang. Good morning and all that. :later:

A pink kitchen? Hmmmm. Well, that could be where all the "sensitive" cooking takes place, but I think you're making the right choice and going back to beige. :)

Hey, we've made it to Friday!

Kevin P

IMHO, in a standalone desktop, I wouldn't bother with RAID at all. I would use RAID 5 in a server/storage tower though, say for a media server.

This way, the OS, paging file, temp folders etc. are on a fast, single drive. And the big stuff like video, music etc. that would be a beeyotch to backup would be on the RAID 5. I could see doing a nice RAID 5 MythTV/music server setup down the road.

Gordon Moore

Given my current use with laptops, I would say buy the most bullet proof one you can afford, and don't get too wooed about all the high-tech features or state of the art hardware. That changes faster than Andrew changes his toys  However because laptops are generally not upgradable, buy the most performance you need and never scrimp on the warranty, that's the only card you have to play on a LT that is a POS-DOG

I noticed this the other day while driving downtown, so I snapped a picture with my cell phone. Finally we get some decent screens in Toon Town. The location will certainly bring some life back to the core of the city :T

The entertainment complex will offer more than just movies. With large luxury seats, ample legroom, and all stadium-seating (each seat row being 18" higher than the previous row) each auditorium will feature wall-to-wall, giant curved screens and Dolby Digital Surround Sound. A Zero Gravity Family Entertainment Centre will be located off the spacious lobby and can be accessed without a movie ticket.

Guests will enjoy a tremendous variety in the concession area - truly something to tempt everyone's taste buds. Whether you prefer the traditional popcorn, candy and soft drinks or more elaborate offerings, the concession stand will offer a wide range of options. Hot foods, such as fresh cut fries, chicken tenders, hot dogs, sausages and pizza will be available; as well, a Yogun Fruz frozen dessert bar will serve up several no-fat and low-fat yogurts and premium ice creams.

I haven't seen any architectural renderings yet, but will post when I see them.

David, did you pick up on the collector series stamps from the Post Office this month? If not, hurry down to the local PO to see if they are still available. I picked up 2 sheets, one to mail with, and one to save. But if push came to shove, I would consider parting with them if you can't get them now...

Some old and some new, the stamp series is called "American Advances in Aviation".

Nice cinema they're putting in. We have some nice ones around us now. It's nice to not have to drive to Lowell (40 minutes each way) to get to a non-craptacular cinema now. Of course, my home theater will blow them all away once it's all put together.

Speaking of which, here's the plasma I'm now looking at, as the prices have dropped: Panny TH-50PHD8UK (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94540&catGroupId=32751&modelNo=TH-50PHD8UK&surfModel=TH-50PHD8UK)

Laptops: Sometime in the future I'll be getting a new laptop. My wife still needs a new one. I haven't really had the time to trace the power problem. It's cut out a couple of time for me as well. It seems like a messed up power connection somewhere, I've had the battery in and out and it still shuts down with no warning.

I would probably stick with a name brand for my wife, but there's a lot of good deals these days.

I have an older IBM and it is very impressive. So much so that I would consider another IBM in the future.

Bing: Nice theater. There's a new one in downtown Vancouver that I still have to visit.

My rant is we went to see Transporter 2 last weekend. Fun movie. But man you pay for butter on your popcorn firt time, and they charge you for butter on the refil as well.

Plus the concessions with the other food items weren't ready for the first showing! I'm like going around looking to order some chicken fries, not ready, a HOT DOG!, won't be ready, so I settled for a $6 personal pizza.

That stinks about the theater. We have decent theaters here(Cinemark, Dickinson and AMC) and they are all nice. Huge screens, great service. We also have a coffee bar and some other stuff. Bing will like his Galaxy theater. :T

Panny TH-50PHD8UK

Kevin I have experience with that model. My buddy has one. Believe me when I say you will be MUCH happier with it than you would have been if you bought the LG. The newest LG's haven't fixed their issues with the blacks and the noise that is easily apparant within those blacks on the panel.

Shane, I went to Tweeter at lunch to see a Panny live in action. I was impressed with the picture. What's interesting though, is there was a 50" Pioneer Elite plasma right above the Panny on the display wall, and it was showing what looked like deinterlacing artifacts (jaggies), and this was on a DirecTV HD feed. The Panny wasn't showing these artifacts, just a smooth image.

Maybe it's a side effect of the scaler, or maybe their video distribution system was causing the issue, but I would have expected better from the Elite.

Shane Martin
09-09-2005, 06:52 PM
Kevin,
I suspect it's a video distribution issue. The Pioneer is brighter but lacks the contrast. The newer Pioneers should fix that problem BUT they cost ALOT more than the Panasonics. Panasonic has gotten hyper aggressive in the PLasma market and they make a quality videophile set.

Fujitsu has a stellar scaler as well but they cost Mucho $$$$

Given the list MSRP is $3999 and you can get one for around $3k online( Visual Apex is where my friend bought his (http://www.visualapex.com/plasma/Plasma_details.asp?chPartNumber=TH-50PHD8UK&MFR=Panasonic)
I would go that route. Likely if the 50" was this price when I was in the market, I would have went Plasma as well. Just make sure you budget in a mount, an HDMI cable and the blade for HDMI and also get some BNC adapters). Still a steal for the price.

I've calibrated(via avia) 5 of them now in total and the Panasonics have the best PQ I've seen.

Also Directv isn't the best to judget HDTV given they downrez to 1280x1024 from 1920x1080I. It is noticable on 1080I HD material but not noticable on 720P stuff but that's a given. My friend just bought an HD tivo for $200 from D* and is going strong.

We had 200-300 evacuee's hit town today, they are setup in our coliseum currently, many of them brought pets that must be cared for by the humane society. As I understand it, a lot of these people are some of the last ones to evacuate, because they did not want to leave their pets. Spirits seemed pretty good from the people they interviewed or showed. As I understand it, there are at least 2 other locations for people to go, if space is needed. So, my town, doing it's part to help out.

Trevor - That looks like an absolute killer LCD, and for ~$1000 it's even better! I remember paying $500 for my 17" Viewsonic LCD. It's amazing how fast the prices of technology drop.
-----
Kevin - That was the same Plasma screen I was considering. I thought you were going with a front projection setup? Is this the "other" display! Damn! You're going to have a killer HT! As Shane said, I'd check prices/deals at VisualApex. They have some of the, if not the best prices around. I bought my PLV-Z3 from them.
-----
Lex - We also just got some "evacuees" up here. Seeing the photos of them coming off the planes just reminds me how fortunate I am. Nature is such a beautiful, yet dangerous thing. Heres hoping they get the help they need, and that they recover from the physical/emotional anguish they've gone through. I see New Orleans was right around 80*F. It was in the upper 40's here last night, which must have been a shock for those people who arrived! 8O

Nick, the temp has nothing on the humidity in New Orleans, and the entire Delta region. You think it's hot? Once you start to see your legs sweat just standing still at night, you know about hot.

But yes, 40 deg would be quite a shock to NO residents. We are beginning to cool down some at nights here, and had a beautiful low humidity day yesterday. They say it is supposed to be hotter this weekend, but not sure about the humidity.

I didn't know they were taking Evacuee's to your area though.

-----
Lex - I know what you mean about the humidity. I was down in Louisiana last August. It was like walking around in a Silverback's armpit. The coastal gulf states have got to have the worst summers. I'd rather be picking gum off the pavement in Death Valley than working outside in Louisiana! The bugs don't make it any easier either! Like you said though, going from 80*F and high humidity to 48*F and Low humidity has to be a shock. Now that I really think about it though, those people just endured 100mph+ winds, driving rain, electrical storms, and flying Camry's. I can't imagaine they will be phased by our weather that much. I donated some cash at my local grocery store, Hannaford Grocers. They then ships their food "at cost" without profit to help those in need. They have a big display of grub that the people have found the most convenient/tasty to prepare. The two most requested things were Lipton noodle/rice dinners and Reese's brand Peanut Butter.

I imagine those british MREs and surplus government cans must get awfully nasty after a few... um... minutes.

Injera with some Ethipoian stews & salads. I make some killer stews (such as Doro Wat), but making the Injera bread is testing my patience.

If you enjoy spicy food and haven't tried Ethiopian cuisine try to find a local eatery that serves it. I've become addicted. It's like MiddlEastern, Morrocan, and Spanish food that have slammed into each other head-on at 100mph. Some of the most complex spice blends I've ever made! 8O

Ahh, so you know about our southern hospitality, I mean humidity, lol.

TENN gets pretty bad at times, thought maybe not quite as much moisture in the air of course as coastal. We are only 8 hours from the east coast, and about 10 from the gulf.

We may not be quite as bad as the 5 states around us to our south, but close. (GA, MI, LA, ALA, fla and to our east, some of NC, and South Carolina. But we feel their weather at least 2-3 months of the year pretty good.

Anyone watch the concert for hurricane relief last night? Pretty decent and got me to send money, I think they need the help more then I need a few more toys. So I no longer have a full toy account, it will fill up again.

If a cherokee 140 had to slow down, what were you in? I am pretty sure the tiger will out fly a cherokee. We flew in and out of here for years on 1 and the only thing slower is an otter on amphibs.

Lex - Sometimes we get it pretty bad too Lex. I'm about 1.5hrs from the Atlantic, and when we get a seabreeze on a 90*F day it can be pretty nasty. It seemed like everyday I was between Houston and Florida along the Gulf it was almost unbearable though. We only get 4 or 5 days a year where it feels that bad. We're fairly fortunate in the inland NorthEast though. Not much in the way of severe weather or natural disasters. We get some real nasty humid days a few times a year, and everyonce in a while we'll get 2ft of snow during the winter, but overall it's a nice balance. when we get a seabreeze on a 90*F day it can be pretty nasty.
I lived in Churchill in the 80s and when we got a sea breeze (+40Knts) and -40C (or colder) it could be pretty nasty, especially if it deceided to rain. And, yes, as long as the hudson bay was not frozen over it could rain. Normally froze by Jan. Thaw by late June early July. Hav to see if I can find pics of what cars look like with 4" or more of ice coating them.

But I can handle that a lot better then I can handle the humidity that even you get. What they get on the gulf coast just about kills me when I have been there in the summer.

I'm almost ready for the written portion of the test, only a few more things to review. I'm getting passing grades (80%-100%) on the sample tests I've been taking, but I want to try and ace it with a 100% score. Just reviewing weather report abbreviations now and FAA regulations. There are about 30 different types of 'friggen weather reports issued in the US. Each one has a different abbreviation for it's name, and has a different format for the information (which is also abbreviated - go figure).

I picked up my instrument/commercial training materials a couple weeks ago. I should be ready to start diving into those sometime next month... after I pass the PPL-ASEL written exam that is... :B

I should be reviewing/practicing right now, but I'm slacking off. Trying to finish Season 2 of Macgyver. A guy has to have priorities... :D

Not sure what point you're at in the knowledge department (or Canadian regulations regarding training), but the following kit is a fantastic group of products that gives you everything you need for getting your PPL. It's for Part 61 schools where you teach yourself the knowledge and concepts then learn to fly from your brother's wife's sister's uncle. It pretty much has everything for part 141 schools too which is like going to a technical school. They just use an official FAA approved syllabus, groundschool w/teachers, etc.

Jeppesen GFD Private Pilot Kit - Part 61
http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/2087

Basically you get the essentials...
- Textbook
- Maneuver's Manual
- Up to date Federal Aviation Regulations/Airman's Information Manual
- E6B Mechanical Flight Computer
- PN1 Navigation Plotter
- Written Exam Guide
- Practical Test Standards
- Logbook

US$186 w/free shipping. You'll also need a local sectional chart for where you take your lessons once you get into cross-countrys and navigation. They're like $5.

This is an extra item that contains the FAA question-bank and generates practice exams. It's what I'm running 2hrs/day to prep for my written.

Works pisser, but it was kinda pricy for a single disc. Almost felt like I was buying a microsoft product as I rubbed my bum after ordering.

I'd love to get Patty Wagstaff to take me for a ride
in her Extra 300. THe Pitts S2s would be pretty hot too.

I had a chance to go for a rip in a Pitts S2s when I was 14 years old, but missed it.

More likely than not, my first aircraft will be a Cessna 152 II.
Here are some examples. In flawless shape, IFR equipped, with low hours they go for ~US$30k. I want something I can fly alot that has a low operational/maintenance cost. The less it costs to fly, the more I can fly it! :T
http://hampage.hu/repules/muszerfal/SJG2.jpg
http://www.lp3.net/~lperley/picts/n46000side.JPG

Then theres the Van's RV-7a route...
Costs about $75,000 to build with new everything (including a new Lycoming 0-360) and IFR instrumentation. This would also let me do all my own maintenance for an even lower operational cost. Cruises at 200mph at 75% power! :-y
http://www.vansaircraft.com/public/rv-7int.htm

http://www.vansaircraft.com/images/7a/rv-7a_49_web.jpg

I'll probably still start with a 152 II though, as it would take me ~4yrs to finance/build an RV-7a. Oh to cruise the skies at 200mph though...

Oh well. On a stable day I can wind a 152 II out to ~150mph. Then all I need is a 50mph tailwind...

Not sure how I'd handle aerobatics. One things for sure, I wouldn't eat during the 8hrs preceeding the flight!

Haven't ever puked in the plane, but I did get the first symptoms of disorientation sickness once. My instructor was drilling me on airfoil stalls one day, and around the 40th recovery I noticed I had cold sweats. It's the #1 cause of painting the cabin in-flight...

I have been in a small plane when it did 2 loop-tee-loops, and one of those fade away falls. It was well, a blast as a kid. lol. Had my Mom and Dad known about this, they'd have likely wigged out over it. I went to the local port with my next door neighbor. *Johnny Knoxville's Dad knew a guy Jackie somethingerother, a former crop duster/daredevil type guy that took me for the ride. Sort of reminded you of a young and wild Elvis. Had some indian in him as I recall. He took a few people up for regular rides. I am not sure what possesssed him to give me the ride of my life, but he did. The plane had clear roof too as I recall, wild.

Gordon - Boy am I tempted to order one of those. All I have now is a 128MB thumbdrive and double the memory would be nice... :yesnod:

Have to hold off though. The 1GB 2.0 sticks are well under $100 now, and thats what I'm really drooling for. I was thinking of ordering a bunch to give as Christmas gifts though...
-----
Lex - That sounds like a great storyline/character for a film! A half-indian Elvis flying acrobatics in a cropduster with a giggling kid in the other seat! :T
-----
Trevor - You'll be sleeping on the couch and eating take-out for the next month for that one!
-----
Jason - My vote goes for a mulching mower. :yesnod:

I'd love an RV-7a, but I don't think I have the patience to wait 4-5yrs while I build it. I have to have something to fly in the meantime. I'd really like to get a Cessna 172 over the 152 (2 more seats, 60% more power, better performance) but decent ones go for about US$70k, and If I was going to spend $70k, I'd build a RV-7a...

It's only a matter of time, and redirecting funds from other projects before Ben starts building hours for his License. I'd say within the next year :T

In fact, anyone interested in learning to fly should pick up that Part 61 kit I posted above. It has everything you need to know bookwise, and will save you money if you know those things beforehand when paying per hour in the plane. It's good reading even if you don't plan to fly and just want to know more about it. Seeing that logbook sitting on the counter just nags at you though... fly...fly...fly...fly... :B

Oh yeah, here's Kevin's Tip Of The Day: Only buy the real Windex, not the cheap knock-offs. I've been trying to get the inside of my windshield clean for ages, and everytime I used what I thought was a bottle of Windex and paper towels or an old T shirt, it would streak unless I buffed it thoroughly immediately afterward. I never had this much trouble before, so I looked at the bottle of what I thought was Windex, and it was the local store brand!

Only real Windex for this guy from now on. :)

Well busy weekend for snappy. Had fun though. In case you all were ever wondering were I live, just take a look at the hurricane off the coast of NC. Then look at the projected path! RIGHT DOWN SNAPPYS back yard!

The sucky thing is the way this thing is moving, it is forcing the Nuse River to Rise a TON! well I live a 1/4 a mile from the ferry on the Nuse! 5 miles away they have issued flood warnings and stuff. The wind has really been pushing a lot of sea water into the Nuse and making the levels rise a bunch.

Kind of waiting to see about that. Sad thing about it all, we have evacuies from the big easy that are staying across the street! 8O They leave becuse of Katrina, and get caught up with Ofilia! :nonod:

It looks like it is getting weak. I hope it down grades to a TS, and God pushes it right out to sea!

I was just news oblivious pretty much this weekend. Doing other things. In a way, not sure what I did, other than build a component video cable for one of my first customers from several years ago. He wanted it fast, so I built it Sat morning and shipped it before noon. The only way I coudl have got it there faster would be to batten down the hatches on the M, and average 160 mph to California. lol. Even then, US Priority Mail could still beat me possibly, lol.

Maybe once Nick gets his plane, he can do some quick deliveries for me. :B Or Chris. Hmmm, where oh where is our pal Chris. I've missed his input of late here and missed him as well. Erik? Any word on Chris yet?

Bing, 2 things, wait to use it in the winter. Second, is flatten the insulation value some. Take something heavy and lay on it for a few days, to flatten the fill some, as it expands back, if it doesn't go full distance, it won't have quite the "R" Value. Make sense? 3rd would be crank the heck out of the AC.

Here is a hunting one
A lawyer went duck hunting in rural Iowa. He shot and dropped a
bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the other side of a fence.
> > >
As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up
on his tractor and asked him what he was doing.
> > >
The lawyer responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field,
and now I'm going to retrieve it." The old farmer replied, "This is my
property, and you are not coming over here." The indignant lawyer
said, "I'm one of the best trial attorneys in Iowa, and if you don't let
me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own."
> > >
The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how
we settle disputes in these parts of Iowa. We settle small
disagreements like this with the "Hawkeye Three Kick Rule."
> > >
The lawyer asked, "What's that?"
> > >
The farmer replied, "Well, because the dispute occurs on my
land, first I kick you three times and then you kick me three times and
so on, back and forth until someone gives up."
> > >
The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and
decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by
the local custom.
> > >
The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up
to the attorney. His first kick planted the toe of his
heavysteel-toed work boot into the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees.
His second kick to the midriff sent the lawyer's last meal gushing
from his mouth. The barrister was on all fours when the farmer's third kick
to his rear end sent him face first into a fresh cow pie.
> > >
The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and managed to get to
his feet. Wiping his face with the ! arm of his jacket, he said, "Okay,
you old coot. Now it's my turn." [I love this part.....]
> > >
The old farmer smiled and said, "Naw, I give up. You can have the duck."

I sleep nude ( a nice visual for y'all :p: ) and I usually pull it back a good ways and use only the top sheet and/or stick a foot or two out to the cool air  (Try living with a couple indian girls! MAN they love heat! )

Good jokes Taz :T

Sad event right by my house :( The nature reserve about 5 minutes away from my house is on fire :( A large portion of it is peat too so it's near impossible to put out and can burn underground for a LONG time. Going to be a lot of pissed people if we find out this was something along the lines of a tossed cigarette or even worse, arson

Andrew that Burns Bog article may be of particular interest to you, in your field of work. Lot's of rare plants and animals there, quite sad :( You can tell how much locals care about the area too. Last night we saw the smoke rising while driving home from my sisters place quite a few miles east. We decided to drive down to the bottom of 64th Avenue and there were hundres of people helplessly standing there watching it burn. So many people expressing how unfortunate it was and how saddened they were :( We really do take a LOT of pride in our bog and watershed as locals, and watching it be destroyed is greatly disheartening. Hopefully they'll have luck containing it today....

Jason there are some peat fires in Manitoba that have been burning since people built settlements there.

Jason: I was thinking of you when I heard/smelled the fire. I was on my way home last night, when a friend called, asking if there was something burning near by. I wasn't sure what he was talking about, but he told me he heard that Burns Bog was on fire! When I got home I could really smell the smoke and there was ash on my car. I rinsed it off and this morning there was some more ash.

It is really a sad event. I talked to a lady last year that was part of the Burns Bog conservation society, and I thought, I should go visit soon. Now I really wish I made the time to go visit. :(

I do hope they get the fire contained today. I hear it will take about a week to have it completely put out.

I hope you guys are safe and don't get too much ash.

Paul, It seems most of the ash is heading west towards Richmond/Vancouver, so far anyways.

Taz, thankfully we get a lot more rain here which should help put it out even if they can't get it done by man power. Unfortunately we're only do for a couple light showers in the next week or so. We need one of our good Vancouver drenchings!

Paul Wu

Yeah, don't I know it.

We do need a good dump of rain to help take care of the fire.

I'm not planning on buying a Porche, but I will take out a new A3 for a test drive sometime this week. A friend of mine saw a really nice one at Audi of Richmond.

I really want to try out the DSG and compare it to a 6 sp.

Bing: Sorry to hear about your laptop, again. Every time I think of looking at a Dell laptop, I just have to think of your situation and I reconsider.

Gordon: Nice bat, and flip. Sucks about the early morning call.

Sorry about the fires guys. That sucks to see good areas like that burned. :(

Looks like Ophilia is downgraded to a TS! :T

It needs to pick up speed though.....silly thing is going so slow, what they are worried about here is instead of 4 hours of 100 mile an hour winds, we get 24 of 70 ! take the large ammount of rain this thing is going to dump, and it could get interesting! The water is what every one around here is preping for.

Our Gov is not taking any chances. 200 Guard members have been called up and are staged. Evacuations for the outerbanks is already underway. Heck this gov is not taking ANY chances. I would not be a bit supprised if he does not ask for the Marines that are stationed here by tomorrow.

Hopfully it will not get back up to hurricane strength. And I hope that it bangs a right and heads out to sea. We will know more by the end of tomorrow.

Hopfully it will be just some QT with the wife and some rain.

Every one have a nice day....got to take the puppy to the vet. He is having problems going potty. :( The little guy got ahold of some of my little girls barbies (not sure if they are barbies. But anyways little girl toys? :scratchhead: ) , and they are not "passing" well. We thought we were going to have to take him to the Pet Hospital last night. But he was able to pass everything alright. Just worried that he might have some damage to him, or more plastic is there. So the vet said to get him in ASAP.

Have a great day ya'll

Does anyone have Vonage.ca VOIP telephone service.

If so, do you like it?

What does everyone here think of VOIP telephones over broadband?

Does anyone here have SHAW.ca VOIP?

If so, do you like it?

Thanks in advance, peeps!

My cable company provides VOIP thru its own cable modem/cable line. We get a huge discount for using it and I get to keep the same #. The voice quality is very good and unnoticable in the difference between my traditional land line I had thru Southwestern Bell. The modem we use has an 8 hr battery so I don't worry about losing power and losing my phone.

For $100 a month, we get phone, 4mb down internet and digital cable. That's cheap because Digital cable is usually $70 and internet is usually $35-$40.

My friend uses vonage but he has some issues with it with the largest one being that his DVR which requires the line doesn't work with it.

Regarding the Ruby, it has a fan noise of 22db. That is unheardof and unnoticable. People at the show could put their face up to the box and NEVER hear it. They did have some calibration issues though. The reported contrast is 15,000:1

The big issue is the short throw distance

Greg a friend of mine uses VOIP here in Winnipeg. He loves it but doens't use Shaw as they're way more expensive. I'll find out who he signed up with.

GregoriusM

Thanks, Andrew. Can he still use it with a DVR?

Andrew Pratt
09-12-2005, 08:57 PM
Not sure. He's using Shaw for regular cable but his phone and internet are via the VOIP service.

Try drinking with newfies from different regions if you want some strange english, newfie style. Or more politically correct, residents of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador 8x) :^x It can be very interesting
Then again the first time I went to the southern states, I was ok until the drinks started flowing and then I needed a translator, even though we were all speaking english, I think.
