Trev,
The primary reasons why the old Camaro failed were 2 fold:
1. High Cost. The cost ballooned after 1993. The 1993 model that everyone loved the look of was pretty affordable. The V8 model ballooned over 25k very quickly. It was no longer a value car.
2. Craptacular reliabilty. Hey it is a GM car after all ;) . Very VERY poor reliability. T-Tops leaked like a mother and their alternators were for crap. Reliability NEVER improved.
They'll try to bring them back. The Mustang has no competition right now for a 2 door car muscle car. The 4 door Chrylser/Dodger variants are no match. It's a ripe market but the car needs to be well made.
I did confirm today that it is a a V-6 inside.
And she said it's faster than a Porsche.
The VR6 is a nice motor but it's not faster than a Porsche. If it's a v6 then it definitely isn't the Diesel or TDI. The mileage on those were no better than 22 city when I was looking at one. The TDI gets 40+. I thought long and hard about buying a TDI. The 100HP scared me until I drove it. It had plenty of pickup and go. Not blazing fast but good enough.

Hey guys... my Sherwood Newcastle pre-pro arrived!! :B
This puppy is loaded! 6 A/V inputs, plus a 8 channel direct in that also has video ins, 3 audio-only ins, phono input & tape monitor (how quaint ;) ), tuner, all the current surround formats, Dolby Headphone, plenty of digital ins (though why do they always have more optical inputs than coax?) It even comes with 2 remotes. A fancy universal remote, and a dedicated Zone 2 remote.
Can't wait 'till the house is done so I can hook these toys up!
After many years of talking about it, I finally have separates! 8)
Faster than a Porsche? LOL. There's a statement that requires further qualification. A twin turbo Cararra? Not to much is faster. :B

Congrat's Kevin. The remote that comes with the S-N is pretty nice...esp compared to what ships with most devices these days

plenty of digital ins (though why do they always have more optical inputs than coax?)
The reverse was true from what I've seen. Most of the new receivers that I have looked at have 6 coax, and 2 optical.
Has Sherwood mentioned how they are going to handle the whole HDMI thing?
Kevin P
08-19-2005, 11:13 AM
The P-965 has 2 coax + 4 optical. Plus 1 coax+optical output. The Denons (AVR-2805) we use when we do installs are basically the same. 2 coax and the rest optical.
As for HDMI, I don't know. There are no DVI or HDMI inputs on the P-965. Maybe they'll offer a future upgrade when HDMI becomes more mainstream. The 965 has a USB port and is firmware upgradeable, but adding HDMI would require a hardware change.
So now I have 2 huge boxes in my cubicle. I may use them to build a wall. When E's Martin Login boxes arrive I might finally have some privacy in my cubicle!

Has Sherwood mentioned how they are going to handle the whole HDMI thing?
There's an external scaler coming to add support for that with older models and the new 871 DVD player will be HDMI. Personally I like this approach as it keeps the costs down for those that don't have need for HDMI (which is the case for me) and could offer solutions to others depending on how proprietary it is. Rotel will be doing the same thing as well. Likely future models will have it built in.
Kevin don't hurt yourself moving that A965...at 86lbs its not something to take lightly!
PS I'm still green that you're getting ML's ;x(

Morning everybody! :later:
Thanks for the B-Day wishes guys  :B Yeah between Jazz and Tash I've got some grey hairs coming in Doug  Yup just 28 but man each year seems to go by faster and faster the older you get....
Faster than a remote control, toy Porsche maybe...?
Nice looking wheels Greg :T You get your car back yet and are you still thinking of getting something else?
The other reason the Camaro/Firebird got canned was that because of all those problems.... they weren't selling ;) Also I believe the plant they were built at was shut down or converted as well.
Kev congrats on another toy :T I think we need some pics of the house progress too ;)

Andrew hit it on the nose with how Sherwood's going to handle the HDMI issue, that little external scaler is pretty slick and very affordable. I will be spending time with them at CEDIA so I hope to glean even more info. They may be releasing some info at CEDIA (or if not then, probably CES) about a newer 'upscale' pre/pro that more than likely will have HDMI built-in. I have heard a projected release either late this year or early next year. They have this down having built the new Outlaw pre/pro --- don't know any other features that will be included (oh, probably will have the 7-band parametric EQ included like they are now doing for the P-965, R-965, and R-865). They will be maintaining and supporting the P-965. Don't have a clue on the pricing on the newer pre/pro.
BTW Kevin, does your unit have the new 7-band parametric EQ included?

Any love for the 2006 330 M Sport? Although auto journalist have been touting the new 3 as the best 3 ever, Shouldn't love for a car be at first site, rather than having to grow on a person?
I mean I like it, but there are some parts I don't like for reasons I can't put my finger on. Tail lights, rear roof line esp the 3/4 window at back, high body line...

BTW Kevin, does your unit have the new 7-band parametric EQ included? How would I know? RTFM? Or fire the thing up and go through all the menus?
BTW, Jimmy, maybe you can answer this for me. My P-965 came with a sheet of paper titled "Mic & Pre-amp Installation Guide", which mentions connecting the mic pre-amp to the Surr Back R input, and using one of the trigger outs to power the pre-amp. I assume this has something to do with the calibration mic that came with the unit? The mic in my box doesn't have any pre-amp; it just has a mini-plug which I presume simply plugs into the "Setup Mic" jack on the back of the processor.
Do you know anything about this? I emailed S-N to ask but was wondering if you knew. Maybe it is for a different version of the setup mic, and they accidentally inserted the sheet in my box?

Sounds like a different version....
I have an 'older' P-965 that does not have the setup mic on the back. You had to go through one of the surround back channels. Sounds like they sent that to you inadvertently because if you have the setup mic input, you should be golden. I can try to find out more. I have sent back one of my demo R-965's (the tech was apologizing to me that it is going to take him a few hours to finish the conversion) for the upgrade. Until last week, it was not possible to do the upgrade on my P-965 but they have since come up with a workaround and I will have the prototype for them to upgrade older units.
Until I get my unit back I am not certain how you check. Probably something in the setup menu I would think though.

No, I hate that lines of the Cayman. I have always despised when they make a car close to but not quite, and cheaper version of... Like get a personality of your own rather than latch on to Big brother. The Compact 3 BMW was like that with the sawed off back. The Cayman reminds me of some Cheap kit car trying to be all 911 like, or a 911 on an acid trip
Shave off that top and you have a fine car.
I say it looks like the TT because it has that very steep rounded bubble like roof line.

Bing: As much as I dislike the new 'styling' of BMW and the design route, it has eventually grown on me. I now can look at a 7 series and 5 series without puking. And the 3 is the best so far. I believe that a car should be visually stimulating first! The new styling is distinct and unmistakable. But I still don't like it, I've grown to tolerate it. We shall see in 10 - 15 years time what history will write about BMW.
The Cayman is another story. I'll look at the pricing, but I'm a 911 fan through and through. If it's not a 911, then it is just to help make some money for Porche to make more 911, ie the Cayenne, Boxster. All this talk about Porche has me itching to do a road trip with my 'cousin-inlaw' Cool guy, and he hasn't even taken the Porche out this year! It's 2001 911 Carrera convertable. I took it out for a spin one time and it was a blast. :)
As to what I want to do with my Golf here's the list:
http://www.hpamotorsports.com/conversion_images/conversion_4motion_2.jpg (http://www.hpamotorsports.com/conversion_AWD.htm)
Unlike earlier Syncro based conversions, the 4-Motion conversion is far from a bolt-on affair. Our licensed technicians unbolt the factory trailing axle, gas tank and peripherals. With this completed, they set in to the 80 hour task of drilling out the factory spot welds to extract the rear frame rails and floor assembly. With this task completed, the new 4-Motion rails from Germany are spot and seam welded back in place, making room for the new twin sender gas tank, rear differential and Independent suspension assembly. With the welding complete, the metal is etch primed, colored, cleared and wax sealed inside and out. Final assembly sees the seamless integration of all fly-by wire electronics for the Haldex rear differential installed, along with all the factory heat shields and wheel well liners. Once this conversion is completed, your car will look and function as if it was configured this way from the factory. This entire conversion is performed within HPA's 10,000 sq ft facility and takes roughly 8-10 weeks. The costs are virtually identical between the New Beetle, Golf and Jetta, but must be quoted on request.
Or I could buy this one!
http://www.hpamotorsports.com/project_images/For%20Sale%20images/r32_mainpic.jpg (http://www.hpamotorsports.com/projects_forsale_r32.htm)
Under the hood of this R32 hides HPA’s Stage II Twin Turbo kit. Featuring Twin Hybrid K04 turbochargers and velocity tuned HGP Exhaust manifolds along with a hand full of other upgrades, this uber golf produces 550hp. This R32 was also featured on Redline Television, and now you can own this german powerhouse.
Check out the various magazine reviews on what HPA (http://www.hpamotorsports.com/media_mags.htm) has been able to accomplish!

I could buy a Porsche, but then everybody would know it's a go fast car. If I do the 4 Motion conversion to my car, then add bigger turbo's I'll have a 300+HP sleeper. :) In the end the price for all the modifications would be like buying a new car! But my insurance will be based on a 2000 4 door hatchback!
I'm actually thinking of potentially buying the Porsche from my cousin-inlaw. He never drives it! Mind you that would only happen in a few years, but damn that would mean I would own a Porsche!

I like the boxster styling myself.
Went out for lunch in town and they have a hole in one contest that we had some coupons for. Managed to get one near the green but that was as close as I got...can't complain though given the total lack of golfing I've done this year....and besides it was nice to get away from the office for a bit.
Kevin yup you've got the new style S-N's with the mic input. Not sure if that automatically means you've also got the EQ or not though.

Wow!
You guys are out of control!!
3 pages in half a day.
I will catch up later..
Little Nancy was in the garden filling in a hole with dirt, when her neighbor peered over the fence.
Interested in what the cheeky-faced youngster was up to, he politely asked, "What are you doing, there"?
"My goldfish died,"? replied Little Nancy, tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him."
The neighbor laughed and said, condescendingly, "That's a really big hole for such a little goldfish, isn't it?"
Little Nancy? patted down the last heap of dirt and then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat."

We had a tornado (actually, 18 of them) rip through a couple of towns in Wisconsin last night. I was driving home and the sky was just lit up like I never saw it before. One town, Stoughton, WI, which is about 75 miles West from Milwaukee had 80 homes completely destroyed. Even more eerie is what happened a couple of hours after the tornado whipped through....
in and around the Greater Milwaukee area, people were showered with debris from that very tornado. Imagine looking outside and seeing drywall, papers, siding, etc. 'raining' on your lawn!!! One lady, who happens to live ~ 5 miles from me found a bank statement, completely intact, from a family from, you guessed it, Stoughton, WI. It was a little wet but completely intact. Another guy found a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Others found Wills. Wow. I have nevered heard of this before.
Jim, I saw a bit about that on CNN. Very powerful storm, at least 1 death they said. :(
Stay safe.
Jason, please do be careful who gets listed, and be certain to warn contains images that contain neudety, etc... Make sure someone wants to be sent that sort of thing before sending it to them. I am sure at least a few here would not want to be included.
I would also suggest only sending this type email out on the weekends after everyone is off work Friday. Definitely at night only during the week.
Thanks.

True for me in most cases..
Subject: THEORY: a real man's cooking ...
BBQ, a real man's cooking. It's the only type of cooking a real man will do. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:
1) The woman buys the food.
2) The woman makes the salad, vegetables, and dessert.
3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill -- beer in hand.
Here comes the important part .
4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
More routine....
5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.
Important again...
7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
More routine.....
8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.
9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
And most of all ....
10) Everyone PRAISES the man and THANKS him for his cooking efforts.
11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off." And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women!
GO FIGURE !!!!

Good Morning Gents! Am I the first one up this morning?
Cute theory Trev... in my case I do it all! Bug hates cooking.
Paul... I did mean Alias, not 24. And I understand what you guys are saying about the 5% in horseshoes. There are a couple who've stated they'd rather just whoop me, problem is, it wouldn't happen until they practice more. They just get their hopes up and end up being let down and upset because they don't win. It's really a double edged sword... dadnabbit if you do and dadnabbit if ya don't.
Did I hear Lex whining about work? hee hee
I've got to get Chelsea a car in a few months... don't know really what to get her but it's gotta be priced low (under $15K), good insurance rate, and excellent gas mileage, automatic, 4 door.
She has been looking online at the Toyota Echo... runs about $12500 with upgrade package that includes A/C... she'd probably average about 35mpg overall.
Another option is one of the Value Packaged Honda Civics for about $14000. Probably about the same average gas mileage as the Echo and I think a better car.
I really don't know of much else out there in this range. Any ideas? Make her walk?... ride bike?... if it keeps raining everyday then maybe a boat!

I mean I like it, but there are some parts I don't like for reasons I can't put my finger on. Tail lights, rear roof line esp the 3/4 window at back, high body line...
I don't like it.

lost my dang post. Crap. I was looking about downgrading the M for my house move Andrew. If I get a new house, the M has to go. I know what I am doing though. I'll step down to a 20Kish bmw probably. Example, a 00 325, 01 or 02 maybe, depends. I can reduce my payment more the lower I go of course. If I retail my M for 43-45, maybe I can do even better. I think I have only watched 1 CFL game this year, so I'm not sure what your refering to. The game last night because CBC is on strike, had no play by play or colour announcer. So they just turned up all the mikes and broadcast with very few replays and graphics. They had the edmonchuk stadium announcer and the first down line. On the big screen with the sound system cranked it was like being there.
Rick i didn't know you played? That's a matter of opinion anyways. Actually just starting again after a 20 year hiatus. Developing callouses again is killing me. But this time I can indulge in guitars that I want as much for art as playing. The one I really want to find is an "old" D'Angelico Archtop  :dudes:

other than the few stubborn folks with their heads up their bums with the old "A real Porsche is aircooled" nonsense....I drove alot of Porsches when I worked in a foreign auto-shop during highschool. Driving an aircooled 911 sans the heated seats/tiptronic at/etc just has a sense of raw authenticity to it. Like Marv says in Sin City (which I picked up this week), "Modern Cars, they all look like Electric Shavers". Just my opinion though, I should have added that. ;)

Heck Pratt, about everybody has allergy problems here in the allergy capital of the world. lol. It has been said by expert horticulturists that there are more different varieties of plantlife in the smokey mountains, than any area of the world. I believe it. Because there is bound to be something you are allergic to, lol.

Sounds like a difficult place to be in Spring/Fall then if you have allergy issues. Luckily for me I don't seem to be bothered by anything. As a kid I couldn't go into chicken barns but that hasn't bothered me as an adult. Glenda seems to be allergic to guinea pigs (what a weird word to spell!) which we've only noticed in the last few years.

Friends and Hollywood stars fire into the sky Thompson´s ashes
The private celebration included actors Bill Murray and Johnny Depp, rock bands, blowup dolls and plenty of liquor to honour Thompson.
With a deafening boom, the ashes of Hunter S. Thompson were blown into the sky amid fireworks late on Saturday evening as relatives and a star-studded crowd bid an irreverent farewell to the founder of gonzo journalism.
As the ashes erupted from a tower, red, white, blue and green fireworks lit up the sky over Thompson's home near Aspen.
The 15-story tower was modelled after Thompson's logo: a clenched fist, made symmetrical with two thumbs, rising from the hilt of a dagger. It was built between his home and a tree-covered canyon wall, not far from a tent filled with merrymakers.
His wife, Anita Thompson said he loved explosions.
The private celebration included actors Bill Murray and Johnny Depp, rock bands, blowup dolls and plenty of liquor to honour Thompson, who killed himself six months ago at the age of 67.
Security guards kept reporters and the public away from the compound as the 250 invited guests arrived, but Thompson's fans scouted the surrounding hills for the best view of the celebration.
Thompson fatally shot himself in his kitchen on February 20, apparently despondent over his declining health. The memorial, however, was planned as a party, with readings and scheduled performances by both Lyle Lovett and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
The author's longtime illustrator, Ralph Steadman, and actor Sean Penn were on the invitation list, along with Depp, who portrayed Thompson in the 1998 movie version of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream," perhaps the writer's best-known work.
Anita Thompson said Depp funded much of the celebration.
Thompson is credited along with Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese with helping pioneer New Journalism - he dubbed his version "gonzo journalism" - in which the writer was an essential component of the story.
He often portrayed himself as wildly intoxicated as he reported on figures such as Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
At the height of the Watergate era, he said Richard Nixon represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character."
One more attention grabbing stunt by one of the masters and also a person who in many ways influenced my life. I bet that was spectacular!

Well I just pulled all the DVD's out of the DVD Jukebox and loaded them into a Case Logic CD wallet...damn things full so I'll need another shortly but they're pretty affordable and it gives me quick access to the discs. The DVD changer was handy for storage but not nearly as useful as the CD changer is since you don't normally use random mode for movies :) I guess if you were loading it up with both CD's and DVD's it would be different but given my needs the new universal player will do nicely.

Greg no worries it sold pretty quickly on Audiogon so no harm no foul. Let me know when you're free and I'll give you a demo of the new gear and help you with that DVD issue we were chatting about.
Ok, is there something going on with Greg trying new gear? Andrew, please keep sales discussion out of the forum. Even though you are affiliated with an advertiser it seems, I have to keep a level playing field, and I've told others they can't be discussing business here, that same rule applies to you, as you are not an advertiser on HTGuide, nor will you or anyone else be allowed to use your rights as moderator for personal gain. That means, I gotta slice it and dice it the same for you as I do every other member that has a business. Understand? Agents are not advertisers, a business is. An ad is not as we've already discussed carte blanche rights at the forum for everyone associated. you above anyone else should know this.

Rest easy Doug it had nothing to do with business, just Greg was interested in the used Sony DVD changer I was selling.
moving away from business to pleasure. I played golf today for the first time this year. At least I think it was the first time. Given my illness dating back to the start of summer, and being busy a lot aside from that, I guess that is not to surprising.
I had both my new 3 and 7 wood Hawkeye Titanium fairway woods. Let me tell you, the 7 wood was a DREAM come true. Unbelievable how well I hit that club today. I soared it over the water on a par 5 to the greenside bunker. I hit the next par 4 green after a blotched tee shot and second shot. I hit the green on 2 of 4 par 3s off the tee. (This course has really LONG par 3s). The 7 was heaven. I loved it. The 3 wood I didn't dial in as well today, but I did hit it well a time or two I think. Maybe I will dial it in next time. Oh my that 7 though. I had 2 birdies today, a chip in and a 20 foot putt.
It was hot, and I was really tired with sore muscles afterwords, but I made it through 18 riding. I played with a chap from South Korea, a US citizen, a dry cleaner owner now here. He played pretty good golf.
My tee game was a bit rough early today, but I did come around and hit a few good drives with my driver at the end of the round.

Sounds like a nice day on the course Lex...and nice to hear the new clubs are working out for you :T
I could throw the 3 wood away and be happy. That's how much I loved that 7 wood. Obviously, I won't throw the 3 away, but it is great to get immediate impact on my game with one of them. I believe I could just about take out my 4 and 5 irons now, and not miss them with that 7 wood. What a club. It makes me anxious to get out there again. I can't recall the last time I had 2 birds in a day anyway, that's exciting enough, and yes, the 7 wood did play a hand in at least one of those.
taz13
08-21-2005, 11:21 PM
If I can't use a tee I might as well throw all my woods away. I can't hit a wood off the ground and I have enough different woods and rescue clubs to prove it.
About the only good thing is I can hit my long irons at least as well as a 3 or 5.
I golf with a friend whose only non wood is a putter and it is a louisville slugger so it is the only club with any wood in it.
Hey Lex, what is a birdie? :T
Well, I admit, that teeing up a wood definitely increases my own success, but overall, I can hit fairway woods, but consistency hasn't been all that great with the 3 for me as I recall, but not playing much this year, I don't have much of a track record to draw on right now. Today, I Wasn't real successful with the 3, but I think to make that judgement today would be a little unfair having not played this year.

no decision has been made on any additional clubs Shane, that decision rests with me. I spent a good bit of time yesterday working on my equipement rack which is something I'd wanted to do for some time now. I've added a door to the bottom on the opposite side to the draws and shuffled some of the gear around to new homes to make way for the new arrivals. I've now got the QSC pro amp, BFD and zone two receiver hidden behind the new door so its easier to access then it was (on top of the rack behind the common wall) and its given me more room on the other side for the VCR (aka clock) and the Sat receiver. I'll take some pics later once I'm done but I'm pretty happy with how it looks...next up a new TV stand :)

Rick, I still do have the love of the grill. I say it looks like you have the right models in mind. The Vermont castings have a really nice heat distribution. I like my Weber, however it has some marginal hot/cold spots. Nothing major, just something I noticed when I cooked a big batch of burgers.

Hi Guys!
I am a little bit down right now,,due to somewhat
ruining the clearcoat on the Corvette.
I have been in the process of applying my Zaino
Show Car Polish and unfortunately when using the
ClayBar cleaning process, ended up creating zillions
of hairline scratches all over the paint clearcoat.
The Claybar process is supposed to remove any previous wax
and also any contaminates that are on the paint.
I must have gotten dirt in the clay that you rub over the paint.
At the time I didn't notice that this damage was occuring since you use
a cleaning lubricant with the clay piece , so it has a wet look while
working this process.
So after 2 coats of special Zaino Wax solutions with both #5
and then #2, I can still see these scratches when looking against the light.
Previous to this, I had no scratches whatsoever...
So, not really sure what to do now? :(
Any suggestions?
Bing perhaps?, Lex?
I have e-mailed Mike Zaino, so hopefully
he can give me some guidence..
The tough pill to swallow is the fact too, that I
have spent at least 16 hours polishing and cleaning the car
over the last 2 weeks , only to ruin an otherwise nice original
coat of paint.
I was doing this in order to prepare the Corvette for my first Car
show this weekend coming up.

Bummer Trev. That clay bar process really requires some care. I have not performed it myself, however I have read you have to always be folding the clay in on itself so if there is any dirt, it is moved away from the surface. If you drop it on the ground, throw it away.... etc. It really can damage paint easily, and I hate to give you the speech, but you keep your car so clean that it probably didn't need to be clay bared. That said, I think the only way to fix it now is with a professional Polish. Maybe Mike Z has some multi step polish kit that could fix it. If the scratches are really deep, then a clear coat would be the next worst step. Sorry man
Your pictures look great, but if it's bugging you, I'll take it off your hands ;) I was sure wanting your camera the day of the Air show :B

That ultraviolet sun shot is great and very interesting. :D

Thanks for pointing out that deal, ht-addict. :T

Trev - that's too bad about the car, but since you think you aren't that great taking pictures, then maybe take a picture of your car and look at that instead. It probably won't show the scratch marks! 8)

More BBQ pics? Give it up guys, it's almost winter! :W

HEY! to the rest of you, and I've been following along, but just haven't been up to posting much. So "ha ha" to all of the jokes, "oh, another year gone by, eh!" for the birthdays, "nice pics of (pick one) your wife, your kids, you, your friends, your mistress...... hmmmmm..... your flowers, your BBQ, your bike(s), your HT equipment, your ......... really, those pictures ARE nice!" :B
:later:
...... I still can't believe that Andrew "Rotel" Pratt is not longer Andrew "Rotel" Pratt. I feel like I've been abandoned!

Mornin' folks...
Nice photos Bing!
Nice grill Taz!
Trev, your pics look great too! They usually have a hot red Corvette in them! :T Sorry to hear about your scratches. Hopefully they can be buffed out no problem.
Hey ht_addict, that's the card I had in my Phantom Stalker PC. It worked great.
My Phantom Stalker II has the X800 XT Platinum Edition, which is the top-end X800 model.
Yes Grego, we're going to miss "Rotel" Pr@. At least he'll still be around, maybe in the Sherwood circles next, so it's not like we're losing him completely.
Bing, great pictures, you are a lucky man. :)
Trevor, oh my, this is a tough one and I am sorry to hear of this. I positively hate clear coat paints of today. It seems you can't win. I should shoot you a picture of my S10 pickup right now, not that it would make you feel better for your crown jewel of a car, the Vette, but just to show what clear coat paints are good for. At any rate, my S10 has to be painted all over due to pealing clear coat, or else I just let it go and let it look however it looks, realizing the truck is not worth much anyway, except to me.
Unfortunately, I think the less you do with clearcoat paints, the better. That doesn't help you now. You see, with the paints of old, you waxed, you took a little paint off sometimes (laquer, enamel), so surface scratches could be ground down a bit. That's how you brought the paints of old back, you took a little paint off. Now with clear coats, it seems they are just there. Anything more than a light waxing, will have no real results.
This sounds like a really abrasive step, one I would not do on base coat clear coat, especially not when it looked good. The best way to take wax off is a wax stripper agent of some kind, IMO, a clear fluid you'd wipe on, then wash off even. Washing one several times in dishwashing liquid should pretty well strip one down I think. But all that is hindsight.
You see, paint used to oxidize, and you cleaned the oxidation off, with a little paint by waxing it, and left a beautiful finish behind. Perhaps this product was not designed for base coat clear coat systems? I don't know... :(
After discussion with the wax expert, you may want to talk to a body shop about this, particularly, the Chevrolet dealer even.
I had a fun time with cars yesterday myself. I was at work and my cell phone was about low of charge, so I went to the SUV to plug my charger in, and figured I'd make my call plugged in. Well, I plug the charger in, and notice the lighter assembly is moving. Next thing you know, the plug and beauty plate that it sat in were coming forward and loose. So, I start to examine the thing, moving it around a bit, and POW, I saw sparks fly and suddenly it appeared everything had went dead, right off, loosing the Dome light and upon further examination, the radio was out as well. I said oh crap, here I am at work in a low parking garage that you likely can't even get a wrecker into easily, and I don't even know if this thing will start now. Lucky for me, all critial circuits were ok. Whew.
I started looking at the fuse panel outside, and didn't see anything much, turns out, the interior fuse panel is where I found a blown fuse. I went home last night and started tearing into the dash a bit trying to get at the cig lighter to hopefully fix the mechanical issue that caused the loose lighter and sparks to fly problem. I removed the ash tray, and ash tray track finally after unscrewing part of the lower dash under the steering wheel and getting no-where. I could at least get a few fingers back there like a contortionist. I'm having a hard time figuring this thing out, so finally after 20 minutes of finagling with it, getting hot under the collar, and just plain hot in the garage,` I decide against my better judgement to take the connection loose, and snake the parts out of the ash tray hole to examine the complete part. Once I did that, I figured out how it went back to gether, then put all the parts back in there, threaded the wire, plugged it back up, got it together, put the new fuse in, and whala, my dome group is back, the radio now works (didn't before), but finally I decide to test the cig lighter, and boom, wouldn't you know, it don't work now. GRRRR.
At least I know what to pull out and I can check the connection fairly easily I hope. Maybe I get it working, maybe I don't, hard to say. Also, at least my radio is working again, and my dome group. :)

Wow, remind me not to do anything paint or electrical to my car today. :E
Lex, you should be able to get a replacement lighter socket at an auto parts store. They're cheap. Just pop a new one in, hook it up, and you should be good to go. Just make sure to pull the fuse first. :)
I don't know that it is the lighter socket that is bad Kevin. It could be a power problem. I'm not to much on auto electrical testing, but first I will double check the connection, then if push comes to shove, I'll rewire the thing and find some hot power elsewhere to clip into and bypass the factory connection. I just hate to start rewiring, especially where there is little to no room to work. Also, I'd rather run an auxilary hot line from another local to a new female cig lighter in the floor than get to tricky inside this dash, it's to much work. I don't care if the lighter works, I just want the female power to work.
All I care about is being able to plug up a cell phone or other power items.

Morning Gang :later:
Thanks for your comments on the photos :T
Freaky story Lex. If the lighter is on the same circuit as the dome and the radio, and the fuse is good, then I suspect it would be wiring. Good write up about automotive paints and the curent clear coats. Clay bars can be used on clear coats. The main purpose of the clay bar is to pull contaminents (typically metal dust) out of the paint surface.
Gregor, I'm on the same desert isle as you ;)
The painters were planning to come and prime the house today, but it's raining out. Just got the call, they are not coming today :(

The circuit is working if the dome and radio work, so it's either the wiring or the lighter socket itself. I would tend to think the latter. If you have a voltmeter (and I would hope that a Cable Guy like you has one!) it's easy to test the wiring. I'm 85% sure that replacing the lighter socket will do the trick.
And you're like 99.9% of the rest of us, no one actually uses the lighter anymore. Even smokers don't use the lighter. We only use it as a power socket. I think carmakers don't even include lighters standard with cars anymore, just the sockets.

Automotive testing, through away meter and use test light. Light on voltage light off no voltage. Remember though that a lot of lighter and parellel power ports are always live.
Here is some nice clear coat, new paint job with more zeros then I would pay for some cars. The 30 days are up and it is going in for hand polishing and wax sealing.http://www.htguide.com/forum/attachment.php4?attachmentid=4161&stc=1
I love driving this absolutly fantastic ride :45: out of :5: 1/2 star deducted for being GM :driver: :driving: :driving:
Don't let its luxury fool you, there is a mean beast lurking in there.
The guy driving is my house sitter and the next owner of that car. 8O

Even smokers don't use the lighter. We only use it as a power socket. Like I said we need a smilie of a pile of money burning and even moreso for that paticular waste of time money and health (reformed smoker and starting to become militant).
I won't even go near my cigar humidor, and that used to be one of my favorite things to do. Pour a wee dram of a quality scotch and light a good cigar (like I said about that smilie ;) )
Speaking of scotch, on my last trip out, I made it to the Grant liquor store and went browsing good scotch. I picked up a 25yo speyburn(1977/04) and a new discovery. Chivas has a scotch out called Revolve that they say is the softest whiskey ever. I think they are right, it so easy to drink neat. I am on my 2nd bottle already. :4: out of :5:

Congrats on the ex-smoker status Taz. Lex is an ex-smoker too IIRC.
As for me, I've never smoked in my life, never will. Can't stand the smell, can't imagine how anyone could deliberately inhale concentrated quantities of the stuff. But I do find it interesting that ex-smokers tend to be more active anti-smokers than those who have never smoked.
What kind of car is that Taz? I can't make out the emblem. You said it is a GM? Looks like an Accord to me.
Yes, I am a strong anti-smoker. I do not like smelling anyone's second hand toxins now. Yesterday while sitting out front of the autoparts store a clerk comes out and lights up, choking me up in the process. I let them know I didn't like it at all.
I was inside a neighboring auto parts store quite a few months ago, and back toward the back a guy lights up. I proceed to the counter, I ask, can you smoke in here? I said it like can YOU SMOKE in here? It wasn't like I was asking to. The guy said you can if you want to. I said in that case, I am leaving, as I am not staying someplace where smoking is allowed, and I am not buying anything either. I turned and all he could see was my tail lights. I didnt' slow down, I kept right on a walking right out the front door.
I thought about having me some signs made for my 4 X 4 that say smoking sucks or sometin like that. You pull up beside a smoker, cough good and point at the sign, ha.
I am so sensitive to it now, my car ventilation system can pick up smoke oders from a car in front of me with the driver smoking. I kid you not. Yet every driver that smokes, think they gotta have a smoke going in order to drive.
