Trevor - That looks a little too dangerous for me... I'll let someone else fly that one... :B I'm still working on getting good with a little C152  Speaking of which, if the weather improves I have a lesson in <1hr, and another tomorrow. I'm over 20hrs now! I need 40, but most people take about 50-60. I'm aiming for 55.

Lex - I'll keep an eye out for your PM. Like I said, I'm poor, and won't be ready to purchase until next Thursday, the 18th.

Basement looks good E:sn :T Oh, and if you need someone to get rid of those pesky ML's I'd be more than happy to come down and pick them up for you and get them out of your hair, free of charge! :B

Thankfully my room's coming along too, got the main walls painted yesterday, cut in most of the grey walls, going to finish that this morning, then paint them, then it's on to the trim and then done!! :thud:

Doug, 175 Yammy? Nice. I had one of those infamous Suzuki RM 125s, it was light and fast. It was the fastest machine in it's time.

We had a Honda 185 3 wheeler that I spent my youth abusing around the farm :yesnod: Out property was right up against the portage sandhills so there were ample trails cut through the bush...never did hurt myself which looking back is amazing considering the dugout hills I used to jump over like evil kenievl (sp?);)

here's almost an exact image of it I think. Except I took the luggage rack off, had motocross fenders on it as well, at least the front was a high mount fender.

I also added a hooker header on mine.

Hi Guys! :later:
& Bing Budda Bling! :amen:

Cool bikes, We had a Honda 80CC dirt/street Bike as young boys.
Fun that was! :yesnod:

Well, Got a fake Pay-Pal E-mail..
Wanting me to conform an e-mail address to my account.
When I click on the link, i'm forwarded to a new page which also indicates
Pay-Pals new look and updated website.
After logging in you get a new page that states it's a random Security
check which then asks you to fill out your personal information
including credit card #, Expiry date , pin # and also you SIN #..:E

So I went to my bookmarked PAy-pal page and logged in normally
and everything was as normal as original..
So I then went to proceed to report this e-mail to PAy-pal as fraud.

Here is a copy of the e-mail...

However if I go back into my E-mail, I am taken to this site when I click on it.

Lex

Trevor, you need to immediately go to http://www.paypal.com log in and change your password. IF you logged into a fake paypal account login page, you just gave them your username and password! They can then go in and send money to wherever they want to I think.

A page can look like a paypal page without actually being at the paypal site. Via email, they can tell you you are clicking on a paypal URL but actually be getting you to click on something else.

Lex
08-13-2005, 09:05 PM
also check and make sure the only email on the account is your own.

Kevin P

I get those d*mned "phishing" emails all the time! :M Paypal, Ebay, various banks. Just goes to show how stupid and gullible the general public is. Trev, you didn't log into the fraudulent site with your ID and password, did you? You said you went to your bookmarked Paypal link, so you should be ok there. If you decide to poke around in a phisher's scam site, always, ALWAYS fill in bogus information. Give them what they deserve.

Another tip to ensure you're at a legitimate site: use an incorrect ID/password the first time around. If the site rejects the login, then it's legitimate, and you can then log in with your real password. If the bogus password lets you in, then you're in a scam site.

What's interesting, is NOD32 (my anti-virus program) flags a lot of these phishing emails as trojans. Heather's been getting hit with the latest Bagle virus the past couple days too. I need to get another Linux box built with some filters for all this junk.

My HT nut friend and I were talking today and we came up with an interesting idea that will allow me to combine a killer 2 channel setup alongside my HT. I'll reveal more if/when we actually decide to do it.

L8r folks,
KJP

1. Go cart with 5 horsepower briggs motor.
2. mini bike with 5 horsepoer tecuhmsa or briggs.
3. Honda trail 50 bike.
4. Honda trail 70 bike.
5. Honda 100 scrambler off my Dad's car lot.
6. Then came the 175 Yammy, lol.

with living on a dead end street, woods on 3 sides of the end of the street, it was an incredible place to grow up as a boy that loved dirt bikes. I guess that's why I got so good at it too. We also drove a Willis jeep in the woods too while about 14-15. lol.

we lived about halfway down the valley, so there was down terrain, then up terrain, creek, moutains, hills, flatlands, wow, it was a blast!

And made exactly 0.0000000001% dent in the mosquito population

Problem with the insect population and people is they literally outnumber us. They rely on genetic adaptation and can accomplish it a LOT faster than people simply because they reproduce in the hundreds.

If the world was wiped out by a meteor (or people for that matter) bugs would inherit the earth I suspect, they're more resilient and adaptable.

Actually viruses would probably be the ultimate winner but I picked something a little more visible.

Well the family/HT room is almost done! Just have the trim left to paint and touch up a couple spots. Then while all the furniture's out of the room I'm going to shampoo the carpet as well. Should get the bar top done early this week :T

So I had my 10 year reunion last night. Good time and got to see some old friends I haven't seen since shortly highschool. It's funny to see how a lot of the same "cliques" still existed and the few sad people that peaked in highschool and/or the ones who still think they're in highschool and haven't grown up yet  It seems most of the folks I hung out with were doing pretty well so that was good to see :T

Bought a new black leather couch this afternoon to go in the media room. I ended up buying a Palliser Hope Sofa (http://www.palliser.com/?action=view_catalog&Join_ID=331355&series_detailed) which looks like this one only in black obviously. They wanted $60 to deliver so I came home and took the seats out of the van and went back for it. I figured it would stick out a bit but it slid right in!

Cool Andrew :T That looks close to our sofa and love seat set. Ours is a Black Natuzzi.

The ride was excellent. We rode for about 40 KM. Half of that was into the wind, the other half was with a tail wind. I was in the zone and almost zen like coming back. I always equate riding with a fast tail wind as the same sensation as skiing fresh powder snow. Both are paramount to the sports experience :) we then tooled around for another 15 Km.

The re-fit of my bike kicks ass. I could feel the bike surge forward with the slightest of pedal pressure. The shifting on the fly or sprint is excellent.

Ordered Chinese food tonight for supper :eating: and will kick back with a movie.

Hi guys - I haven't caught up yet, so I don't know if anyone missed me.
We were on vacation camping outside Vermillion BAy, in Ontario's Blue Lake campground for the past two weeks.

I quoted the above, as I too had some three wheelers.
I had:
an 1973 ATC 90 (balloon tires)
a 1979 ATC 110 (wore out the '90)
a 1983 ATC 250R (air cooled and fairly quick)
a 1985 ATC 250R which I raced professionaly (if you could call three wheeler racing a sport, LOL).
the racing version had a Bluepoint widened axle, a 38 mm flat-slide mikuni carb in place of the 34mm round-slide Keihin, a pair of ported cylinders - one by pro circuit for top-end power and one by Roy Borton for midrange power, an FMF exhaust pipe, Meier unbreakable plastic lowq profile fenders, flat track tires for sand and flat track tires for hard-pack, Boyessen fibre reeds, a reed spacer, adjustable dogbone link to vary the suspension height for ice racing and dirt ovals.

it had no problem hoisting it's front end at 70 mph (it was geared for 85 on the dirt ovals), I have a photo of me in front of a Grey-Goose bus doing a high speed wheelie somewhere...

I think I was kind of a stupid man... I don't hold three wheelers in very high esteem anymore. But G.D. , it was sure fast. And it had that swweeeettt sound that the new powerhouse four strokes just don't seem to match.

Oh, It would never see 70 mph on any track, it was a 6 speed, and the jump from 5th to 6th was just too wide to use in a race, so I geared it to just utilize 1st to 5th. I'd say we would top out at around 50 mph on a dirt oval, and if doing a fast block-pass, we'd touch 60 mph before getting it really sideways to slow down. (we weren't allowed to use brakes, and some places required removing the brake pedal and levers. :E )

Hi Bent! :later:

Thanks Bing and Lex on the Tori riding her bike photo.
She just learnt to ride without trainings wheels yesterday.
Today Taylor took her first ride without training wheels.
Pretty happy with that. Proud Dad that is.
Last year they really didn't get to ride there bikes much
do us camping for about 3 months in the summer. Plus the traffic
on our previous street was too dangerous for them to ride about.
Our new crescent is perfect for riding around, virtually no traffic.
The traffic that does flow through drives very slow.
Anyways, now we can go out for long bike rides with the girls..
Looking forward to that! :T

Gordon,,True about the mosquito population.
However my catch was for those that are breeding
around my house..So I caught a tonne of females that
would have produced a tonne more mosquito's.
The Mosquito Magent does a good job in reducing the
breeding cycle and giving us an opportunity to have less
mosquito's bother us while sitting in the backyard.:yesnod:

I never thought so.... I think it had more to do with the driver. Most times, as most accidents were, rollovers were the result of inexperience or intentional wheelies or underage kids on machines they couldn't physically control. People couldn't regulate themselves so the gov had to step in.

The media overblew the situation as well.... trikes were more a scapegoat than anything.

My buddy's folks still have their Honda Big Red (still running strong). The only time we'd tip that thing is when we meant to do it.

Lex
08-15-2005, 07:19 AM
I only rode one 1 time I think. It was one of the ones on the bouncy tires, It was fun as could be, but I could see how they could be dangerous. Just how people rode them made them that way. As I recall, there were more spinal cord type injuries with these, or head trauma one, I can't recall, than other type dirt bikes.

Outside of a 2nd degree burn when I spun out on some oily gas at a service station at a standstill, I only had scapes and bruises for the most part from biking for all my youth. I did watch a guy bounce a bike off him on the ground in front of me once. It was pretty hard on him at the time too, though he survived just fine, no lasting problems. Just really shook up at the time.

I picked up a new addition to my bag Friday on ebay. Callaway Big Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium 3 wood to go with my driver. This is actually a couple of years newer club with the VFT technology. (Variable Face Technology), but I figure why not update a bit over my Hawkeye driver. I love my driver, so this club I hope will be a welcome addition to my bag as well. I've never truly liked my standard war bird 3.

It's being shipped to me from Hawaii this week via Priority Mail. Who knows, maybe being tee'd up at Wa ki ki (or whereever in Hawaii) will help it to be a great club, heh. I had to pay pretty good for it at 160 delivered, but check the condition, about flawless.

The car has 106,000miles (which is about 160k) Freshly rebuilt engine!!! (New Chain, guides, evo cam gear, timing tensioner bunch of gaskets replaced, motor mounts, valve adjustment, Alternator, waterpump, hoses!!!!). Car has done leakdown and compression test and everything is excellent from Nixon Automotive.

Car has Power everything w/ sunroof. Everything works in the car. Rare Beige leather interior. Front seats needs to be redone, back seats are in great shape. I put a new Supersprint cat back exhaust system on it. Comes with Racing Dynamics and fairly new Kumho tires. All the work done to the car is from Nixon BMW specialist. $11,500 obo

So that's CDN$11,500 obo. I've got to look into this front seat business, and then the cost of insurance and ongoing maintenance. This is the BMW M3 that I wanted when it first came out! Oh and I have to get wife approval as well, that is why I was looking at this:

https://www.birks.com/media/pictures/shop/898033.jpg

So a ring for her and a car for me. :)

In the end I'll do something a bit more sensable, but it's fun to play with these what if's. My next car will be along the lines of and Audi S4, so I can wait.

I'm just looking at buying the car. :) It has just come to my attention that it was available over the weekend. I'm going to have to arrange for a look, or at least a quick call.

I don't know much about maintaining these older cars and I would hate to be hit with a large bill for repairs once I have it.

Seems a little steep for $11k to me. Rebuilt motor and all. Consider it probably has had some performance parts put on it, I wouldn't be surprised to see it really ragged out on the other parts. Seems fishy is all. :scratchhead:

Hmm... me thinks there be'n a suth'n feud be a-happenin' here! Between the Bammer hillbilly and the Carolina hillbilly! :bash:

Well, my home theater pieces parts are a-startin' to come together. Right now I'm sharing my cubicle at work with a huge box that says "Sherwood Newcastle" on it. This box weighs over 70 lbs (I guess that's about 10 lbs. per channel!). And I hear another box will be joining it soon!

At the house, there's a long skinny box that says "Da-Lite" on it. At a friend's house, is a big white box that says "NEC" on it, with three big lenses on one end.

And I have my front speakers lined up. To give a blatant clue, the initials are "M" and "L" and I'm buying them from someone who posts here. Anyone care to take any guesses?

Not to mention the boxes already in the apartment, with various names printed on them such as "Pioneer Elite", "Sony ES", "Behringer", and a little box from the quaint little town of Knoxville, TN... ;)

Nitey nite folks!

Heyyllooo amigos. Paul, nice car, but seems a bit steep to me for the model, even if a "m". I would say 4-6K US for this car. I see later model 3 series going for 5-6 now. Yeah, it's a special model of a car, but it's not all that valuable as yet. As far as durability, it would be pretty good, don't expect to much to go wrong at once. Heater cores, fans, clutch, radiator, these are the type major issues you can have. Expenses should be reasonable on this model really.

Whole hog is right. I'm going to be in the poor house when all this is finished. You don't realize how much goes into a HT until you have to build one from the ground up. Most of us do the "gradual upgrade" thing.

So far, I now have, or have paid for:

Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi universal player
Sony CDP-M555ES CD jukebox
BFD
Sherwood Newcastle P-965 pre-pro and A-965 7 channel amp
Samson S700 amp for sub
NEC 9PG CRT PJ
Russound CA6.4 whole house audio system (6 zones)
4 pairs Russound in-ceiling speakers
SVS 20-39CS subwoofer
ProntoPro TSU7000
Da-Lite Cosmopolitan Electrol drop down screen (80" wide, 16:9 aspect) + control box & remote
A box of Silvercats and Coppercats
Xantech Hidden Link remote extender system

Items not purchased yet, or pending purchase in near future:

Hap-E's Martin Logans
Aperion speakers (center + surrounds)
One more pair of in-ceiling speakers
One pair of outdoor speakers for the pool area
Lumagen scaler
50" LG Plasma display
Custom made coffee table for PJ
More Cats (cables, not felines... yet) ;)
Power Strips/surge suppressors (including one with a trigger input)

And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things in this list!

Last but not least, if I end up discovering that Aperions and Martin Logans don't blend well for home theater, I'll add a pair of Aperions for HT fronts, and a 2 channel amp for the MLs and use the MLs for 2 channel audio only. But that would be down the road, once I have money again. :E

Yeah we've (Winnipeg) never seen 1 buck before so it's a bit of sticker shock. We knew it was coming when the gas stations had the new signs installed this spring to accomodate 3+ digits. :M

Kevin P
08-16-2005, 01:48 PM
We're up to $2.50+ a gallon here. It's ridiculous. People like to say that adjusted for inflation gas is still cheaper than it was in 1981, but it's still painful to pay $25 to fill my little "economy" car every week. I'd hate to own a SUV now.

And I thought it was bad when it would break $1.50 a gallon a couple years ago. Not to get political, but under our last president, gas prices were 92 cents a gallon for a while there. I could fill my tank from empty for under ten bucks. Now under our current one they're $2.50 and still going up. I'll say no more.

I wouldn't mind it so much if my paycheck went up at the same rate as gas and everything else. But it isn't, and hasn't for years, and probably won't anytime soon.

I just hope I'll be able to afford to heat the house this winter. No woodstove + bigger house + ripoff fuel prices = Kevin eats ramen noodles all winter.

What is your move in date?

Gas here is $1.06/litre
however my GrandPrix requires midgrade so I pay $1.11
The Corvette takes premium and I pay $1.17 for that.
Let's just say , that at 10mpg with the Durango average , it is parked for now.

SUX's is all I can say about that.:M

Trevor Schell
08-16-2005, 01:54 PM
Is it 4.54 litres = a Gallon?

Kevin P
08-16-2005, 01:55 PM
Trev, we're still hoping for sometime in September, but realistically, probably early October.

Time to trade in that Vette for a Saturn. Mine runs great on the "cheap" stuff... of course if the prices get any higher I might have to water it down. I wonder if I'd notice any difference! :driving:

1 Gallon = 3.785411784 liters, according to my solar-powered TI-36X ;)

Trevor Schell
08-16-2005, 01:58 PM
Kev, Is that imperial gallons?

Trevor Schell
08-16-2005, 02:02 PM
Yup..One Imperial Gallon =4.546 litres.

So for premium level gas here, we pay $1.17 x 4.546L =$5.32 CDN..per Gallon of gas :E
or $4.59 US for a gallon of gas..

Lex
08-16-2005, 02:13 PM

Lex

Trevor Schell
08-16-2005, 02:20 PM
She drives the Durango.
Basically, if she nees to go out and can
wait till I am home from work, she will take the
GP..Otherwise she will take the Durango is necessary.
So, it is only used on a need to basis.
When the 4 of us go out to the store or a drive,
we take the GP instead of the Durango.
So, that is what I mean by parked. It's still used but
sparingly.
We do need it though, as it is what pulls the RV..So can't
get ride of it. Plus it is too cool of a truck to let go! 8)

taz13
08-16-2005, 02:37 PM
It would be nice if gas was cheaper, but we know its not going to happen. My average round trip when traveling south is 300 to 400 litres depending on the amount of city driving. For the last 10 years up here I have been paying 88.9 and higher (currently97.3 :B ). So my reality in gas prices means I am only paying about $40 a trip more. When a trip into the Grant Park Booze store will cost me a grand or more in scotch and the obligatory side trip into any book store will be also very expensive.
It is also why I am waiting on my next new car purchase, I want to see some of the new changes and devolpment in hybrids and alternative fuel devolpments. So I am waiting for a while on a new car. But it is time to start looking at a new summer toy. Budget of about $15000cdn and there are a couple in toon town and up in meadow lake that I have to look at( This one goes beep beep and has a six pack big block).

aud19
08-16-2005, 03:18 PM
Nevermind a Saturn Kev, a hybrid Honda Accord is where it's at! More power than the gas model and higher efficiency! :T

I have to run mid-grade in my SI as well (higher compression) so I'm paying so I'm paying up near $1.12-$1.14 but at least it's relatively frugal on burning it

Kev you see this question...?
Yeah Kev, if you're going to spend all the extra money on additional Aperions and an additional 2-ch amp, why not just put that money in to a ML centre?

Hi Guys,

I hope everyone is enjoying the gorgeous summer weather that we are, in Northern Ontario (brutal heat has subsided). Since everyone posts new toys, I picked one up yesterday. I got a new mower Honda 4.5 hp, push with mulch and rear bagging. I've never bought one even though we've been homeowners since '93, always had hand-me-downs. We just re-did our driveway and walks so i didn't want an oil leaker ruining the pavers.

Here it is:

Here's my techie question. My manager wants me to start teleconferencing with a web cam like device. I have a Canon A85 and I'm wondering if it's possible to use this via USB? I realize that webcams are pretty cheap, but so am I :)

My uncle owned the Dodge dealership in Powerview (now a service station), he owned a 440 powered 'Superbird for about 6 or seven years since new. The Free Press showcased it's rebuild in their Friday automotive section about a year ago - it resides in Winnipeg now, and there was also a Mechanical(Diesel) Tech from Thompson (MB Hydro employee named Klinger) who owned a Daytona at about the same time.

Shane Martin
08-16-2005, 05:24 PM
Ken,
I own the same mower. It's been rock solid w/o an issue.

Gas here is $2.39 a gallon for the cheap stuff. It's all I need to run since I don't have the High Output v8 or the Hemi. Still a fillup runs $40 here. Sucks but that is what I got myself into when I purchased my SUV. Comes with the territory.

Nice looking setup there KJP
And I thought it was bad when it would break $1.50 a gallon a couple years ago. Not to get political, but under our last president, gas prices were 92 cents a gallon for a while there. I could fill my tank from empty for under ten bucks. Now under our current one they're $2.50 and still going up. I'll say no more.

Well we can't really put the blame on him for our gas consumption. It's going up and with the Chinese wanting more gas, the price goes up. Changes presidents won't fix this issue. We've been flirting with this for years and finally it's happened.

Atleast we're not paying European prices.

Working the late shift tonight to help out. We're a man short and the whole ordeal of hiring another is in red tape as usual.

Nice cars.

Thanks for the comments on the M3. I had a feeling he was asking a bit on the high side. Also, it's been for sale since Feb. I'm not in any rush, it's just funny how things popup when my attention drifted off my Sony receiver.

I actually showed my wife the ring on the website, and she said, not really her style.

Gas is expensive these days. I need premium and I actually use the 94 octane from Chevron, so add even more! I guess if I paid full price, I'm looking at about $1.25/l. I use 94 because I have the car chipped and it runs better on 94, it will also run quite well on 92 and I will have to ween it off the 94 as we are planning a December road trip down to California. I can only get 92 in the US.

Kevin: Great equipment list! I'm glad you are getting the M&L's. I've heard them at Erik's before and they are something! I wanted to get them but I don't have the room for them.

Sonnie: Howdy! I hope things are going well with you. Been going to any horseshoe tournaments?

Trev: I think you meant the Jetta TDI. Diesel's make up about 50% of VW sales into Canada.

Here's a great site (www.antandpete.com) where you can see how fast a BMW Diesel (http://videos.onestopwebhosting.com/Videos/antandpete0-200kmh-0.wmv) can go. Lots of great videos on the site, look in the Gumball 2005 and 2004 sections.

I'm just a tad pi$$ed right now. :M :M   I got a notice from my insurance company that they're not going to renew our homeowner's insurance next year. :wtf: They're citing negligence on our parts for having objects "too close to the woodstove". I was always careful not to have things too close, and after the fire, there was nothing identifiable remaining to prove that anything was too close anyway! We've insured our apartments, cars, and our home with them for the past 10 years and this is what we get for having one (albeit major) claim. So much for wanting to keep longtime customers.

I'll be having a talk with our agent tomorrow to see what our options are. We were planning on having the policy rewritten for the new house anyway, but if they're going to be jerks about it we're going to yank our auto insurance and take our business elsewhere. It's a shame too because the company is based locally and have been great to deal with in the past.

I hate insurance companies. :F Always have, always will. How come they can't be like CAT, SVS, Next Level, etc. and actually care about more than just profits?

Gosh and I am complaining about our ridiculous $2.89/gallon here in cheesehead land! You guys in Canada, OUCH!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know exactly what the exchange is right now, but 3.8 litres (1usg) costs me $3.70 cdn 8O :M
As to insurance companies :M :M I had a claim on a boat for under 4000 that took 6 months to settle and was then asked to take my business elsewhere, this after 20 years with the same company and only 1 claim. My new company treats me better then the old one did for less money. When and if I have a claim I will find out if there is any difference.

Gordon... I'll take some of those dippin' dots to go with my periwinkle automobile that Trev's gonna buy me.

You said it E! I'm ready for the Tide to ROLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!! I think we gonna be okie dokie this year. Congrats on the first flip in a long time.

Horseshoes Paul? Yep... still doing the three tournaments a year. Haven't played in the last 3 though. Folks seem to get upset when you win all the time and deep down they get frustrated. Some of us who have won often are trying to let others get their name on the plaque. I don't know how many more I'm gonna be able to hold out on though... I told them they just need to start practicing more.

What did ya think of 24 this past season Paul? Wonder what's gonna be up now that Jack had to disappear (I think it was Mexico he was headed to?)

I can't even remember now how Alias ended but I vaguely think I remember it being sort of strange.

KEVIN... are you ignoring me???? Did you get my PM on the email thingy? Sorry you lost your insurance company... they are a pain no doubt.

I'm accumulating some toys... glad the big one runs on diesel... off road is about 50 cents less per gallon and fuel economy is a whole lot better even at close to 5 tons...

As for the insurance thing, I hope I don't get stiffed on premiums. It's not like auto or health insurance where one claim means a greater likelihood of future claims. I just had bad luck. It's not like I start fires as a hobby or something, this was a once in a lifetime event! Of course, they find a way to sc*ew you over anyway. There are two worms spreading that take advantage of the MS05-039 (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-039.mspx) Plug and Play buffer overflow vulnerability to spread. Kevin, that's a huge bummer on the insurance. Frankly, I think that should be against the law for them to cancel just because you had a claim, albeit a major one. Insurance companies should have to PROVE beyond a shadow of a doubt that you were negligent, not just sling accusations around and say, ah, we don't want you any more. That is NOT right at all. Unless they can prove criminal intent, even some negligence should be allowed, IMO. Accidents happen. I mean, who in their right might would intentionally do something that would produce these results?

I did update here at work, but still have to do a 2K machine at home. (W2K machine is still here for now, but going away soon. :() I'd personally prefer W2K over XP.

I left it off though for the most part last night at home, it was off all day and night except for logging in to check email mostly.

Trev: If the Jetta's is a GLS, then it is a standard gas car, maybe even a 1.8T engine or VR6. If she says she gets like 1,200 km per tank, then it is a TDI. They are great cars.

I think they just should practice more and get better to beat you. I would personally like to know that I won a tournament agains the Great Sonnie fair and square. I'd hate it if down the road someone told me that you weren't playing at your top and that's how I got my name on a plaque. So that's just me, I always do my best and if you can top me then I am happy, cause I know I did my best and that's that.

24 was another good season, but no lion's chasing Kim. :) I'm very intersted in seeing what happens next season. I wasn't too hardcore this year in watching the episodes.

Alias spoiler ahead. I can't remember the main story but I remember the ending. I think they pretty much wrapped up the Rambaldi stuff and took care of the big red ball in Russia. So Vaughn and Syd are driving somewhere in a nice streach of road, things are nice and calm winding down and then Vaugh starts talking about telling the truth and he has something important to tell Syd. Then a car comes out of nowhere and smashes into there car and that's the end of the season!!!

Bet there is a level of player that is not to happy that the best isn't playing. Because when they win, trophy and money, they don't win the bragging rights because that level of player doesn't just want to win they want to win against the best. Looked into the S4 a bit and one potential problem is if the turbo's go, then it gets real expensive to replace! I'm not into real expensive to replace when I have to think that it's real expensive to replace. Does that make any sense?

The old, if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it. So I have to ask how much, and therefore I can't afford it!

I am happy with my Golf and will probably drive it till it dies! I have a lot of modifications that can be achieved that I'm not asking how much, just when am I going to do it. Plus I don't have any payments on my car. Just gas and when a part needs to be replace/repaired, I will upgrade!

Sonnie: I think you ment Alias. :) But good to know that you didn't through anything. I also agee with Taz, there's the 5% that wish you were playing, but the 95% are thankful that they now have a chance.

Got my sushi lunch today.

We had a nice downpour yesterday. Cooled things off, but I need to get some new wipers! Yikes, couldn't see much at times. Plus there were still some crazy drivers out there thinking it was dry. My friend has a 2000 S4, it's a gorgeous car. I want an Audi, someday. Of course, with gas prices the way they are, I should be looking at a Prius myself. Or a new bike. Although my Saturn can get 32-34 MPG on the highway, my everyday commute yields me closer to 25. That translates to 250-275 miles per fill-up at $25 a pop. That's $1 for every 10 miles, 10 cents per mile, or $1 to drive to work and back.

Paul Wu

I love the colour of the S4!

Here's the link to the guy's site. http://tabernak.net/S4/

There's some more pictures as well.

My thing with the hybrid's is the future service costs and replacement cost of the batteries. I'm sure they will be the wave of the future. But just not in my immediate future.

I've not been getting great milage lately as I've got the air con and have been doing mostly city driving. I just filled up last night and I used to track about 10l/100km, but I'm more like 11l or 12l. I think I'll clean out my K&N filter as that made quite a difference early this year.

My tank holds about 55 liters. I've been filling up about 25 to 40 liters, depending on gas prices. I've usually been averaging 100km per 10 liters, or 10k per liter. Right now work is just under 20km round trip. so that's 2l x $1.12 so $2.24 per trip.

If I get the S4, my gas cost will be higher as it is a heavier car, more powerful, and more thirsty. I'd still be paying premium prices, so that won't be any different.

Plus any new car I buy, I am now budgeting gas to cost me $2/l. I know that's pretty high, but I have been using a budget of $1/l for the past 6 years.

I love flipper as I used to watch it every day during summer vacation back in the day.

4.9 L/100k city / 4.6 L/100K highway which is WAY more than mid 30's MPG!

I don't have time to calculate it right now, but it is much more of an improvement than you've mentioned.

The price on Honda.ca's website is around $29,000 CAD including destination charges. Add the GST/PST and you get just under $35,000.

Paul Wu

Shane: The milage when going from Km to Mi is .6 so in milage terms it's about 58,000 miles on the odometer. I believe the turbo issue to be important as I would have to sell my Golf to get this car, and I really don't want to do that. I would rather budget for my future clutch job and tubo replacement for my golf than have payments and then have a nice big repair expense.

I just find it funny that this all started with me looking at an add for a closeout Sony receiver. Then when that fell by the wayside, I saw an ad for an old M3, now it's a S4. I'm just wondering what I will see next week!

Gregor,
The thing you need to pay attention to is not how they are rated but how the REAL world gas mileage is. Mid 30's MPG is based on real world driving not Honda's inflated #'s.

Paul,
Now that I look at it, the price is right actually. I guess I'm used to paying wholesale value as of late. The KBB price(local purchase) was $21,900. Still maintenance is a big deal with a car like that. There is one in Dallas right now for $13k with 80,000 miles. It is a greyer blue than that photo.

I'm comparing EPA ratings, which manufacturers must use when quoting mpg or L/100k.

Any Civic can get those kind of numbers.

The only way to reasonably compare numbers is EPA, unless you've got enough cars around to average them out.

Heck, MY car gets 90% of the gas mileage that you are quoting, and my car is only average on gas consumption.

Consumption be done about it, do you think?

At least those Civic pics look more favourable than the ones posted a month or so ago!

The one I posted was from an on road prototype. Meaning that is what we will end up seeing.
A 6 banger in a Jetta? That should really boogie
The VR6 is pretty nice but the reliability has come under fire. VW has the worst reliability rankings of any car right now. There are some exceptions but on average they are considered poor for reliability.
I think it is a 4 cylinder, but could be wrong
If its a diesel it is. It has a ton of torque but not alot of top end power. It's adequate for daily driving. It was a little surprised. I drove a VW bettle with a TDI and the little 105 HP was plenty.

Mernin' folks...

House is coming along. Drywall is mostly up, just a couple walls awaiting the plumbers finishing up their stuff. PSNH (electric company) was there yesterday hooking up the power, so we have a couple working outlets. They're taping and mudding and we should start painting soon... guess I have to pick colors soon! Starting to look at light fixtures, outdoor ones first. Ordered a couple online, will look in a store tonight for more (we looked in Home Depot but they only had ugly or crappy ones).

I should buy a bike and start riding to work again, with the gas prices as they are. Trouble is, summer is almost over and I can't (or, won't) ride in the winter. Definitely next summer though.

I can't imagine Lex in a Prius either. Now Kevin in a Prius, I can see that. :E If I had the money and space for multiple cars, I'd have a Prius for commuting, a small or mid-size truck or SUV to carry things that won't fit in a Prius, and a fun convertible for the weekends (Vette, Audi TT, Z3/Z4 or something like that). I can only dream though.

Trev looking at buying a smaller 4-6cyl gas efficient car?? Way to do your part for the environment :T

Christine's X-Trail gets good mileage, however not as good as her Honda Accord. Still, we can't complain to loudly. I haven't been driving the BMW much, which is a good thing as that burns premium. In fact, I think the last time I gassed up that car was more than 2 months ago. And it still has 3/4 of a tank.

Kevin, that is bizarre with the insurance company. They seemed to treat you like they cared. You mentioned that they were very good in the replacement of all your articles, why then this about face if they feel you are somehow negligent?? Why would they cheerfully replace everything, then drop that bomb on you? You would think they would want your continued business, to sort of collect/recover some of that money if you will...

Gordo, that Dellblog was a close reinactment to my situation.. I couldn't read the whole thing for it just brought back bad memories, and I could feel my stress level rising... "Whoooo-saaaaaaa" :M

Gord you have to remember the market segment. It's a mainstream small sedan. You look at the more succesful compact, midsized etc sedans like the Civic/Accord, Corolla/Camry etc and they are fairly pleasant but sedate styling in general. Pleasing and unnofensive sells cars ;)

Paul Wu

WRT VW reliability, the main hit was taken with the coilpacks and window regulators. It's not fun when your window slides right down and smashes into bits and it's raining outside. Hasn't happened to my car. Also the coilpacks failed due to a change of supplier. Very big problem that took a couple of years for VW to acknowledge and get fixed.

I was lucky in that my model year, 2000, was the last of the German made cars. The coilpacks were from the original suppliers and so far the window regulators have never failed, and I use my windows a lot!

As long as the service and recalls have been done, the VW should be a good buy! I'm obviously biased to the 1.8T engine. But the VR6 is a nice engine and there are some mods that can be done as well, but not as easily.

The Camaro looks great!

I'm not a big fan of the new Civic look.

I spotted those carbon cages right away! Way to go!

Jason: Go with a 5dr HB! Insurance will be way cheaper! I know other VW owners who have the 2dr HB version of my car and they are paying way more, like 200 - 300/mth. I pay like 140/mth for business use! So my vote goes for either a Impreza WRX wagon, or the Saab 92x Aero(rebadged WRX wagon) or the new A3.

IF VW ever brings in the 5dr GTI, then I'd say look at that as well. But when you figure in the current price of a GTI, you might as well go for the A3.

Cooper S, while it would be a ton of fun and would be a phenomanal for the twisties, I don't see it being a long term practical car. My wife had a Cooper for a little while and it was a great car, but in the long run just wasn't practical. Oh, and the base Cooper requires premium fuel.

I had a ride in my friends WRX and that was a ton of fun! When I got back in my Golf, it just didn't feel as powerful. That's 227hp vs my 200hp. The 4 wheel drive and the suspension is what really makes the difference in the WRX.

You can always look for a used 5dr Golf with the 1.8T and then do some mods. :)

So no new/used car for me! I have decided that I will put some money towards my Golf. Now it's a matter of determining what to buy! :)

I've always wanted some nice 17" rims and tires. I would like to reduce the body roll and improve the handling. Also I would like to ensure I have money to do the basic maintenance that I know is coming up. My clutch seems to slip, but only after somebody else has driven my car. My friend tells me that is just some glazing as somebody is riding the clutch. I'm only at 123,000 km, a lot off which is highway milage. So I've got a nice wish list to keep me busy in the near future.

My wife would like to go an a trip with her friends in Jan, so if she goes on a trip, I think I'll be doing some mods to the Golf. :) Hmm, I need a new deck in the car as well.

See I knew some new shopping ideas would come to my mind once I got my mind of the Audi S4!

Jason: Not sure if you are ready to buy now, but the employee pricing of the...Hmm, I just checked something and the employee pricing doesn't apply to the 92x Aero, only on the base. Plus they increased the employee pricing. Tricky guys.

Another way would be to get the GM card, that will allow you to apply upto $1,500 in earnings towards a 92x. So you grind out the best deal and then take an additional $1,500 off. Earnings are 3% of your spending on Visa and there is no annual cap.

This program has changed over the years, as it used to be a maximum of $3,500 you could apply to any GM car, but you had an earnins limit of $500 per year.

I pretty much maxed out my earnings and gave it to my mom when she bought her Saturn. Saved her over $3,000. The reason it wasn't the full $3,500 is that after the 7 years, your earnings are reduced and replaced with current earnings. So I stopped using my card for a while.

Now they have limits on how much you can apply to each car. See the list here: http://www.gmcanada.com/english/financing/gmcard/gmcard_redeem_allow.html

It's still going to be a couple years Paul, sadly.... The nice thing about the 92x is that I think they're having trouble selling, so you should be able to swing a good deal...and I do prefer their styling to the Subie. You check out PIAA wipers Paul? I do the airmiles thing with MC so the Visa won't really work, besides for the ONE GM product I might buy, it wouldn't really be worth it ;)

Paul Wu
08-18-2005, 04:55 PM
That's why I've pretty much stopped using that card. I might buy a Saab product in the future, but I can't apply the whole $3,500 against it, so that's pretty much that.

I haven't had a chance to check out the PIAA wipers. Who carries them or where's a good place? Canadian Tire?

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1905.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!

Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 1905:

The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved
roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily
populated than California.

With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most
populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour.

The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,

a dentist $2,500 per year,

a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and

a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home.

Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had no college education.

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were
condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg
yolks for shampoo.

Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted
to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at
the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacist said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." (Shocking!)

Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time
servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.

And I forwarded this from someone else without typing it myself, and
sent it to you in a matter of seconds!
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

It staggers the mind.

I absolutely LOVE the wheels, and I think the tire would look great on them. Very nice! :T

---------

Jimmy: Unbelievable when you read stats like that, eh? I learned about 3 months ago that the turn-of-the-century age expectancy in Canada was 45.

Wo!

And to think that all of these massive changes (almost unbelievable if you really start thinking of what we have/are/do now) have come in only TWICE my lifetime. I'm 50, by which the older stats say I should be dead, and it was only twice my lifetime ago that all of these things were taken for granted.

Thanks for throwing that in there. Very interesting! :T

http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/3978/civic0wx.jpg

That doesn't look much different than the front end of a Saturn ION.

By all the pictures I'd seen on the net, I expected something a little more daring - a little more "funky" - or at least something that doesn't look like the design engineers were fired, and the higher ups designed the car.

Boo, Honda!

That being said, the Civic will continue to sell in boatloads, especially the Si, and the tuner market will continue to thrive tricking out these Civics.

Hmmmmmmmm..... maybe the tuner people have more pull than Honda designers at Honda and they asked for a newer Civic, but not so great looking that people didn't have to go out and by body kits, bling, bling, and more bling, so that the tuner companies could make the big bucks. Sounds reasonable to me. Ya think?

Of the cars posted, I'd sure like to have a look at the new 'Cuda. That was MY car back in the day! (I didn't own one, I just lusted after them.) Mind you, the Corvette was an awesome car to see drive by. I remember walking home from school in Winnipeg in 1966 and seeing a brand new Vette. That was when they had all the right curves in the right places, and I believe it had the sloping, rounded back window. I had to watch it until it was out of site.

I was eleven then, and can still remember it vividly.

HOWEVER, for straight-line driving, it's the 'Cuda - plain and simple. :B

Do you see how flowing and beautiful the lines are on that green Camaro concept car? Now THAT'S what I'm talk'n about! That's why they WILL come back, because they have the good stuff from the old Camaro's and little or none of the bad stuff. Some of the older Camaros are just downright UGLY!
