My wife surprised me with an early birthday present today, she gave me the computer game Max Payne 2. I really enjoyed the first one, and I want to play this one bad. The only problem is, I know I'd waste way, way too much time playing it if I started. Hmmmm... it's tempting.

good evening everyone.

Trev - Congrats on the new PJ look good in the flip.

Lex - you must have some serious blisters on you fingers with all those cables. :T

Sonne - nice new remote. I'm still using the Sony AVR-2100. Its bulky but it rests nicely on the arm rest. I've had it for the past 3 years and I can use the lcd with out looking.

Andrew and Gordon - what did you guys do on your date?

See you guys tomorrow :later:

I'm such a dork. :loser: Along with my BFD, I just bought a baby monitor from Parts Express. (yes, Lex, I used our link) The thing is, this "baby monitor" is really a wireless security camera with composite RCA audio and video outputs. So by putting the base station in my theater equipment bay, I can remotely monitor the baby with full color audio and video without having to leave my theater. AND... since I installed an all-home audio system, I can pipe her through to the whole house in high-powered stereo, amplifying my future little girl's noises to theater reference volumes.

Somebody get me to an A/V addict support group meeting quick. I think I've gone too far this time.

Hi, I'm Chris, and I'm an A/V FREAK.

HI, CHRIS!!!

Remember that today is Dec. 7th, a day that lives in infamy. 62 years since the Pearl Harbor bombings.

Good to see that the Denver Broncos whomped up on Kansas City today. They almost won the last game against them this season, too, but then made a stupid mistake on one single kickoff. Almost doesn't cut it, though.

Enjoying a batch of theater popcorn tonight. Yummy!

Morning Gang, Great Ball games yesterday... :later:

Congrats Trev! You aare the King!

I spend the weekend building a PC for Brook. We'll be giving it to her for Xmas. It all started with me wanting to give her my Old Nikon 990 digital camera, I though what fun would a digital cmaera be with out a PC that was able to manage the images.. so here we are.

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/brooks.jpg

Asus A7V8X
2800XP Barton
512Mb Corsair
Gainward Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 128mb
80gb Seagate Barracuda
120S DVD
52X CD-RW
17" Sharp LCD 1280x1024

I think she'll like it and actually be a bit surprized.

Later dudes.

Good Morning Everyone!

Nice lookin' puter Bing. You can be my dad too! :D

Thanks on the remote Eduardo. I'm in love with the HTM's.

Hey... I ordered from Parts Express too. I got my speaker grill cloth and speaker terminals from them. Prices are killer.

Trev... I hope you get your 2HD... and I hope mine comes in today or tomorrow, not that I'm gonna hook it up and play it but just to know it's in my hands.

The thing is, this "baby monitor" is really a wireless security camera with composite RCA audio and video outputs.

A little "over-the-top"....but a nice get. It obviously has practical applications later on for its intended purpose of home security. What are all you guys getting for Christmas...if this is the warm up....whoa momma!

I took a quick listen to my new cans(HD-570) and all I can say is wow. I thought the $30 rat shack pair I had were okay (in a got-the-job done kind of way...I have pretty low end gear all around, so it's never mattered much anyway...but most of my viewing is often under headphones, unless I would like wife to permanently relocate me in the garage...and in -20C that may not be too much fun :) ) but I didn't realize how harsh the old pair was until I compared to these new ones. These headphones are much more detailled and warmer. They take more juice (since they're rated at 2x the impedance of the old pair). Bass extension is very good and natural...not over-blown.

They are also a DREAM to wear. Best fitting headphones I've ever tried on (in that price range)....

Makes me wish I had the money for the HD-580's or the 600's but you absolutely need a headphone amp for those and they're expensive to start with(for me anyway, forget the added cost).

Now that I had my preview....I had to give them back to my wife where they have been wrapped and placed under the tree :( ....it'll be worth the wait!

what did you guys do on your date?
What did we do on our date?

I think that'll be our last...I didn't know Andrew was such an ass grabber. I mean, the guy's an octopus ;)

Bing, that's quite the powerhouse for your baby girl (they will always be our babies...won't they ;) ).

So true Gord, so true.... Thanks... I miss her so much, that I think this is one way to make up for the distance... At least we'll be able to send pictures back an forth now. As well I have a web camera for her that we will try to link up on. Now she'll be up to speed in the IS dept for a few years.. Last year I bought her a personal MP3 player, but her PC P3/200 2GB HD was a bear to use and import songs /playlists.

The PC will help with the day to day chores of school assignments and then help in the creative departments as well. I loaded it full of graphical programs that will help in her Graphic Arts Class :) An then lets not forget about the games too.... ;)

As much as I miss her, I'm so proud that she has this productive independant life of her own as well. :)

I was also thinking of Opteron for myself and then off load my PC to her, but then I though, ehh, it would cost me way more to set my self up than her, and plus I didn't want it to feel like a handme down. I wanted her to experience that "New PC" feel of opening new boxes of electronics equipment on Christmas day, much like ordering and receiving a new PC from Dell, except this one is from "Bing Tech"... I even Hand signed the inside of the PC with a "This kickass custom PC made for Brook by dad" Then I drew my standard stick man smiley face guy (it's suppose to be me) waving. It looks kinda like my Avatar, with spiky hair and not freaking out :) I have drawn that smiley face stick man for brook ever since she was a baby.

Cool mini review of your head phones! What brand are they?

Here is a bizzare story...

http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/WinnipegSun/News/2003/12/06/278480.html

Once the aircraft stopped its dive, Perry said the captain explained the plane had fallen victim to a pressurization problem but had leveled-off at 8,000 feet.

Chris, could you explain this pressurization problem to us groundlings? WTH kind of pressurization problems would create that? It's as if the engines stopped pressurizing the air for thrust... 8O

I plan on getting one too..Something wireless.

Trev...Chris's system is wireless. For additional security I use a web cam and some shareware....that I may register one day  .

The program is motion sensitive. The webcam was free with a broadband trial and the software hasn't timed out yet. I point it at the area around the av stuff. The minute something changes in the frame and email is sent out with pictures and video and snapshots are uploaded to my webspace with my provider. The thief won't be able to get them. It's very sensitive, I get the cat entering the the area all the time. It even noticed a car pulling up by the light changes shinning through the window.

Total cost $0. If your laptop has usb...a $30 webcam can get the job done quite nicely with decent res...obviously a better CMOS helps.

Pretty good for added security and a low dough solution.

Chris, when I said over-the-top I meant as a baby monitor. Still, it has awesome geek factor. That system isn't weather proof though is it. Strictly indoor stuff only?

Bing, yup NFS is my favorite series! I have a couple of buddies that do the multiplayer thing in the evenings. It's a blast!

$275 is still a little up there considering up could buy a camera with LED's for full night vision (something that camera doesn't have) for about $100 and plug it into an RF receiver/transmitter for about $50 and plug that into the video-in of your PC. Everything would still technically be wireless. It would also be viewable on the web....the little shareware program I found has an applet that serves real-time video on your ISP webspace so you can check-in on your camera at any-time.

Your solution is, of course, much slicker....granted you pay extra for that.

What the heck...go for it! The Linksys is cheaper than the Dink (I mean DLink :) )

Yeah, the article was unclear about what really made the aircraft do the dive. Except for the information that it descended about 20,000 feet in one minute, I would have guessed that the aircraft had some sort of pressurization problem at altitude, and then the PILOT made a rapid descent down to 8,000 feet. However, 20,000 feet in one minute is EXTREME, and many aircraft could not do that, so I'm a little unsure.

Okay, you guys asked for it--here comes the pilot geek information.

As you know, the higher you go in altitude the less dense air is, and there is less oxygen. While this is progressive, it is generally accepted that 10,000 feet is a significant altitude. A human can breathe above 10,000 feet, but depending on many factors like health, size, age, fitness level, etc, it may be difficult and people may get dizzy. Above 18,000 feet it gets even more significantly difficult. Above 25,000 feet, the sheer air pressure is so low that sustained exposure to the human body will cause physical damage, even if you are breathing oxygen from a mask.

Therefore, any aircraft that flies for more than I think 20 minutes sustained above 10,000 feet must be pressurized, where the equivalent cabin altitude is kept below 10,000 feet. The cabin altitude still climbs as the aircraft climbs, but at a much slower rate. When aircraft fly at 31,000-41,000 feet, the cabin altitude inside is usually the equivalent of 6,000-8,000 feet. If you lose cabin pressure, BAD, BAD, BAD things happen. While it can be deadly and if not handled correctly can be one of the worst things to happen in an aircraft, if the crew responds properly, it will be a scary few minutes, but everyone will be just fine and all the excitement and danger will be over very fast and everyone will be perfectly safe.

An aircraft will really only depressurize if a hole appears in the fuselage for some reason. With the inside pressurized, the fuselage becomes a balloon, where the pressure inside is higher and pushing outwards on the skin. If, say, a window breaks, a door opens, or the skin tears, then all that higher pressure air inside rushes out. Don't worry--aircraft are designed of course with super thick skin and windows, and doors always have some sort of failsafe to prevent the possibility of opening during flight. (nothing except other airplanes flies above 10,000 feet, so it's not like you're going to hit a bird and smash a window at altitude) The best way to design it is to have the door open inwards if space allows, so that during flight the higher pressure inside pushes the door closed against the fuselage. In this case, unless you're Superman you couldn't open the door during flight even if you wanted do.

Depressurizations are very rare, but when they've happened it's been one of two types--rapid or insidious. What we call "Rapid D's" happen instantaneously, where a hole suddenly appears, and the air rushes out all at once. This is what is commonly depicted in the movies, with a huge, loud, noisy rush of air, like the Tom Hanks movie "Castaway". However, the movies always get it wrong, probably on purpose to make it overly dramatic--it's over after one second, and pressure equalizes. Unless you happen to be sitting right behind the hole itself and the air is blowing directly on you, like you're sticking your head out a car window, everything returns to normal. The only difference is that in a Rapid D, the instantaneous change of air pressure and immediate exposure to outside air at high altitude suddenly drops the temperature substantially (I'm not sure exactly how much) and also consequently any present humidity will cool into a light fog. If you think back to physics or chemistry, this is because of Boyle's Law, where for a gas, pressure, temperature, and volume are all connected. PV=nRT.

The second type of depressurization, insidious, (no, not Darth Sidious from Star Wars) is very, very slow. The cabin is pressurized from high pressure air that is created from the engines, not the oxygen supply. Aircraft carry bottled oxygen only for emergencies. If one or more engines fail or are shut down, aircraft are designed with redundency so that the remaining engines can still pressurize the aircraft. If all engines shut down, well, you have a bigger problem than cabin pressure, because you're suddenly a glider and have to descend anyway, whether you're over land or not. If some really odd malfunction happens and the engines are working, but your "bleed air system" is not supplying the high pressure air to the cabin, then the cabin will stop pressurizing. It's virtually impossible in real life to make aircraft 100% airtight, so the cabin will very, very slowly leak out the high pressure cabin air. It's so slow that nobody inside will notice a difference, probably. For this possibility, aircraft are always designed with features to detect and/or automatically prevent this possibility. We all have gauges to monitor the inside air pressure. And aircraft have alarms that will warn flight crews if the cabin altitude exceeds a certain amount, usually 7,000-10,000 feet, so that corrective actions can be taken. Most jets will even automatically deploy oxygen masks if the altitude gets above 10,000 feet or so, which is what it sounds like happened in this Canadian case. An insidious depressurization is what probably happened about 3 years ago to the golfer Payne Stewart, if you remember that news story. They were in an older aircraft that had less warning features, and it is hypothisized that through a series of errors they had actually taken off without their emergency oxygen turned on and were unable to breathe.

So what do pilots do if a depressurization happens? First, you get everyone on oxygen masks so they can breathe and live. Then, you descend as rapidly as possible to a safe altitude. If possible, you go down below 10,000 feet, where oxygen is no longer required. If you're over a mountain range, where you can't get below 10,000 feet without hitting the ground, then the next preferred solution is to get down below 18,000 feet. If that's not possible either, (like if you're in the middle of the ocean, because you burn more fuel at lower altitudes and may not still be able to reach land with the fuel you have) then you HAVE to get below 25,000 feet at least. Once oxygen masks are on, what we do is immediately bring the engine throttles back to idle, put out speedbrakes, and push the nose over to descend and pick up speed. We'll speed up to the maximum allowable speed of the aircraft to get down quicker. Many aircraft will even put the landing gear down, just to put more airflow drag out and help the descent.

The thing is, most aircraft are probably only capable of a 10,000-15,000 foot per minute descent rate, even under those conditions. My airplane, the C-17, is specially designed for tactical combat flight, and so we can even deploy our thrust reversers in the air. This means that we deploy clamps and panels on the engines so that the engine thrust is going FORWARD, not backward. Thrust reversers, or T/R's, are commonly used on airplanes after landing to slow it down in addition to the wheel brakes. That's why after landing in an airliner, you'll feel a deceleration and an increased roar from the engines. With gear down, engines in reverse, and pushing the nose down towards the ground, I can achieve a 20,000 foot per minute descent rate in my airplane and keep it flying. We even practice it from time to time, as it's a great way to get down into a combat environment quickly. But not everybody can, which is why that news story is a little confusing. I don't know--perhaps they were really slow at the time, and were able to trade altitude for airspeed as the sped up, or the time was really a minute and a half or two minutes, which would be more understandable.

All pilots train and practice to be able to handle depressurizations. One way we do it is in the flight simulator, where all of a sudden the instructor will surprise you and make all the horns and alarms go off. We put on our oxygen masks, and fly the rapid descent. The other way is every few years, I go to an "altitude chamber". It's a big cast iron tube, with a room inside. We sit inside and deliberately increase the altitude above 10,000 feet. Everybody reacts to less oxygen differently, and the point is to learn how your body responds so you can correctly identify that your body is not getting the oxygen it needs. The condition is called hypoxia, where your body is deprived of oxygen. Fingernails and lips turn blue, you lose peripheral vision and get tunnel vision, colors get dimmer and you see more in black and white, you lose visual acuity, and your brain slows down. It's almost like being drunk, but you mostly feel fine. That's the dangerous part, in that if you don't know what to look for in your own body, you probably won't even realize that you're hypoxic. We do it slowly, to watch what happens as you spend time at high altitudes. Then they instantaneously dump the air out of the chamber to reproduce a Rapid Depressurization situation so we can see what it would be like. Don't worry--there are safety observers there, we have oxygen masks, and they never let it go to a level where it is dangerous to anyone. It's actually a fun and fascinating learning experience once you see how to turn a dangerous situation into one that can be kept safe for everyone.

We learn about Time of Useful Consciousness, or TUC. Again, it varies for everyone depending on health, size, fitness level, age, etc. But at 25,000 feet, you have maybe 2 minutes of TUC before your brain gets so slow that you can no longer properly think and react to put on an oxygen mask to save yourself and everyone else aboard. At 35,000 feet the time drops to something like 20 seconds. At 45,000 feet it's only like 7 seconds or something, so we practice putting on oxygen RIGHT AWAY. People ask, "well, couldn't you just hold your breath?" No. First, a Rapid D happens in a split second, so your breath is sucked out of your mouth. But also I think because of partial pressures, going back to physics again, the oxygen that's already in your body will also filter out, so you must respond immediately. After a depressurization, a flight surgeon will check out everbody in the aircraft before letting them fly again. Things like the bends and other physiological problems similar to scuba diving are possibilities depending on the type of depressurization. Matter of fact, we pilots have restrictions on scuba diving before or after flying or using the altitude chamber.

One cool thing I learned from the altitude chamber is that I actually have a very high tolerance for altitude, and can go much longer without oxygen than a lot of other people. I would still be rational and functional at 25,000 feet long after other people had to put on their oxygen masks. I think it had to do with me growing up in Colorado, actually, at 7,000 feet or so, growing my body to expect that as normal. The flight doctors say that's not the case, though, and the human body acclimates to whatever altitude it's at by growing more red blood cells or shedding excess cells after about 2 weeks. That's why you hear of athletes training at high altitudes, like Colorado or Mexico City, then travelling to the Olympics at sea level in Greece or whatever to compete. Their bodies have excess red blood cells that they've built up then at high altitude, and they are able to retain oxygen much more during competition.

For this Canadian case, my guess would be that they had some sort of pressurization problem while climbing through 25,000 feet, so the oxygen masks came out, the pilot descended rapidly to get everyone safe, and turned 180 degrees back around to go right back to the airport. Sound logical.

Fascinating stuff, I think. Sorry for the long drug-out post, but hey, you asked!!!

That's very cool stuff Chris...too much to know, which is why I leave the flying to pilots.

I prefer the ground where it is much more dangerous ;)
(I know flying is supposed to be safer than driving but that never makes me feel any better the couple of times I done it...).

Chris, being a flying enthusiast myself, (not a pilot, by any means, but an enthusiast), I found that post absolutely fascinating to read. I appreciate it when someone in the industry "sets the record straight", and quells any misconceptions that Hollywood would have us believe.

I had to ask one question about extremely rapid descent (20k fpm).
You mention you can dirty-up the aircraft (obviously to control airspeed), reverse engine thrust (to control airspeed as well), but how would such a thing compare to simply side-slipping the aircraft? Or is there no way in hell you can side-slip an aircraft to obtain a descent at that rate?

Oh, and excuse my civilian type ignorance, but is the C-17 the four engined tanker that I would recognize as the Boing 707 (with some dramatic changes, obviously).

WOW! What an excellent response Chris! :T

I felt I was at a text version of the Imax "Jet Liners" or "Flying" ;)

Good stuff!.. I tend to agree to the aclimatization or the physical effects of living and training at altitude. Part of the reason why Tibetian Sherpas are so great at mountian climbing is becuse they live at altitude. I remember a show once, Everest I think, where they show these American climbers at Camp II at Everest. They were tent bound due to weather, and they were sick due to altitude. They American climbers had oxygen masks on and were barely surviving laying in their tents.. Mean while the Sherpas were sitting out side playing some dice game, all the while yucking it up.....

That is fantastic you are tested to endure more than normal near the Dead Zone Chris :bluezoned: They say at the Dead Zone (+26,000 ft) a person suffers so much oxygen deprivation that they actually have the mentality of a slow 4 year old child... Meanwhile Chris is throwing toggles and minding dials 8)

Great response man, it was a good read!

Chris, outstanding post my friend. I found that very interesting. I remember well the crash of Payne Stewart. He was a favorite of mine to watch on the course. He was such a gentleman of the game, a true professional. I think we should re-post this over in off topic, as others might find it interesting. Hi guys! Time for my monthly or so update. :) I can't believe that it's December already. Bdays coming up ya know. :) It's the 21st incase anyone was wondering.

Chris: Thank you for such a wonderful response to the depresurization.

Bent: The C-17 (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/c-17.htm) is the largest cargo plane in the Air Force. I saw a program about it a few months back and they mentioned there are only a few, just over 100, qualified pilots. So we are in rare company with Chris.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/c-17-image6-s.jpg

Trev: You looked so cool in that Viper pic! Let us know how the projector works out for you. I'm looking to maybe pickup an X1. ;) That's if I want to sleep in the storage room for the rest of my life. Actually it may happen as I can write it off for my business, as well I'd need to get a new laptop.

Bing: Love the BingTech computer that you're giving to Brook. You're one proud papa. I'd love to call you dad, but I think I'd live longer if I just called you brother. ;)

Ricks: Hi :later: Hope business is going well. I still love the subs that I got from you. I'm going to be lending one to my cousin so he can really hear what bass is all about.

Pr@: Sorry to hear about the blown tweaters. Don't let your brain get too fried with the course. Say hi to the girls from me and Sarah.

Erik: Say hi to your wife and sons from us. It doesn't look like we'll be visiting this year. :( I was hoping to make it an annual event. I'm sure we'll be down next year. Glad to hear things are going well with your new job search. I'd hire you in a minute! Do you need any references. :)

Kevin: I know you're not posting, but maybe you're reading. If you are drop me an email and we'll chat. But you really need to take care of yourself and your familly first. You know what you need to do, so just go and do it. The company's not doing it for you.

Eduardo: Sorry you didn't get the job, at least I think I read that a while ago. Or should I say congrats. :?? I guess that's what happens when I don't post enough.

Jehan: Howdy, are you still enjoying your Saab?

Pat: Glad to hear you go your window fixed. I'm not sure I'd be able to do that on my own.

George: Hope that eye thing clears up for you. You still have a lot of movies to watch and review over on the DVD Directors side!

Gordon: Hmm, I don't think you should be kissing and telling about Pr@. He may be sensitive about that kinda thing. :)

Sonnie: I love what you're doing to your garage! So have you decided what you'll be watching first? That's gotta be a tough decision. It would make a good thread over on the Director section. Oh yeah, Alias ROCKS! Still the best show on TV. 24 still pretty good, but I've missed the past couple of episodes, or I should say they're on tape.

Mats: Where do you get all that stuff. Then again I don't know what's worse, that you found it, or that someone put it up! 8O Glad to see you'll be pulling in some dollars very soon.

Lex: You da main man of the house and of the forum. Thank you for having us around. I know I really appreciate a place to hang and to lurk. I'm sending you a lot of positive vibes so that your company can take off.

Joey: If you're still out there. How's it going? I'm trying to match your post in length. I don't think I'd ever match it in content. So whatzup!

Okay now on to me. Business is going well, I'm in the process of really getting things going. Ever since my trip to visit some friends on Vancouver Island, I've had a big shift in mindset. Got my first Group RRSP plan going at a consulting firm at the beginning of November. Our office is now undergoing rennovations, we've expanded and will have two meeting rooms, plus we now have access to an auditorium in the basement. I'll be teaching in our renovated offices in the new year. I am so excited about teaching out of our offices. Most of the times when I've taught our licensing class, it's been at other peoples offices. Quite honestly I do preffer one location over the other, but I have no control over where I'm scheduled to teach. Now for all of next year, I'm going to be teaching out of our office and it's also closer to where I live.

I can't remember if I've updated you with our recent purchases.

Sarah got a SonyEricson T616:

http://www.fido.ca/en/images/personal/products/handsetdetails/erics_t616.jpg

With it she just got a free Bluetooth headset! However, she really wants an over the ear type. Anyone want to buy it?

http://www.keep-talking.net/Bluetooth/hbh-20.jpg

The Dell Axim X3i is in. That's one cool PocketPC I wish it was mine. :) But alas it was my wife's turn to get the new toys.

I did pickup an external drive enclosure, and I've just ordered a Seagate Barracuda 120GB HD, with 8M cache. I figure I better start seriously doing an external backup.

It's time to get the oil changed for my Golf, so I've just picked up some Mobile1.

We watched X2 at my cousins a couple weeks ago and I've pretty much decided that we won't be going out to see any new movies. Why bother when we have a HT just 5 min away? We also watched abit of Finding Nemo. WOW!

My sister's finally back from Australia and she's got 10 rolls of film. She starts work tomorrow and will be getting called to the BAR, as in lawyer stuf, on Friday! We've put a deposit down for her appartment last week, and the landlady is going to renovate and put new stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors as well as furnish it lightly. I can't wait to see the final unit. At the moment I think the move in date will be Jan 15, but we'll see. We've already bought my sister a house warming gift! I'm also having fun putting together a value HT system. We're going to start off with a VCR first, mainly since she still needs to timeshift all her programs. Her apt will come with a small TV, so she's all set to go. Next big item will be her display. We won't be able to decide on what that will be until we see the final apartment all renovated. Since, she's only renting right now, portability is important. I was thinking a direct view, no bigger than 32" but lately I've seen some very nice 16:9 30" sets. Oh so tempting, then for that price, I've also seen some very nice 46" 16:9 RPTV, and then it's not that much more if she got a FPTV setup, like the Matinee 1HD or even getting an Infocus X1 with screen for the same price. She's already got a laptop to run dvd's. But then I catch myself and remember it's for my sister and I think a nice 32" set will do nicely. Then we have to think about audio. Funny enough when she was down in Australia, people were talking about how good Blose was. I'd love for her to pickup a nice setup, but there are budget constraints. My ideal would be something like a Mirage OmniSat system, powered by a Sony 3ES. That way she could upgrade as needed, if ever. I did just see a nice Sony all in one system with a powered sub for just over CDN$1,100. This HTIB includes a 5 disc DVD changer and SACD player with a digital amp. I've heard these are pretty good amps.

http://www.sonystyle.ca/common/images/products/DAVFC9_lg.jpg (http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=167469&navigationPath=32100n33000n33247)

I've actually heard the Sony AVDS50ES, which was hooked up to some Paradigm Studio 20's. I was most impressed with the sound quality.

http://www.sonystyle.ca/common/images/products/AVDS50ES_lg.jpg (http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=162003&navigationPath=32100n32108n46020)

I actually saw a Sony 1ES for sale for just Cdn$699, I'm tempted to buy that for myself and finally get to use my HK amp, and my Yamaha to my sister for cheap. Then she can afford some better speakers. We'll see what happens.

Oh and did I mention that she's thinking about getting a car? So I'm off to have some fun test driving some cars over the next few weeks. :)

Whew. I think that's about it. No wait, I'm trying to setup my own webpage, domain, email and all that jazz before the end of this year. The web site is going to be a very basic one, if even at that. I just want my own email domain, so I can controll my email addresses.

Everybody: Have a great Christmas!

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/runes.html

The Vikings are often portrayed as illiterate, uncultured barbarians who evinced more interest in plunder than in poetry. In fact, the Vikings left behind a great number of documents in stone, wood and metal, all written in the enigmatic symbols known as runes. They relied on these symbols not only for writing but also to tell fortunes, cast spells, and provide protection.

Watch out...I could cast a Rune spell on you!

I think we will watch Finding Nemo.

Alias still rocks and you will love 24 after you see the last episode (12/9/03). What a cool unexpected twist! I can't wait to see next week. I've not been to excited about it lately myself but I think it could be getting more interesting.

Glad the business is going so well. Nice toys!

I think that's true Pat... the holidays have slowed several folks down. I know Trev gotta be busy. We're busy makin' lots of Christmas loans. We average about 30 loans per month year round and have already made that many through yesterday. We'll easily end up with over 50-60 for the month.

Studio has announced they will introduce the following at CES:

Matinee 2HD
17" LCD TV
30" LCD TV

From this I gather they are going forward with the 2HD and they should be plentiful. I can't imagine them makin' a big deal about it at CES and only makin' a limited number.

Andrew, I believe E asked that as well a ways back. Well, not to much has changed. My Dad had surgery today on his neck, where all these problems started. The surgery went well. However, this is just one aspect of his disease. So, while this makes him feel better about himself as it was begining to show a lot on his neck, it doesn't solve the problem.

We still have no news about Kimberly. She's still got swelling in her knee and some in her ankle. The Doctor has still been testing. She had soreness in her back at times and that has continued at times. I'm quite worried about my girl. It's possibly viral, and could go away as quickly as it came up. But we are still trying to find a solution.

Chris D
12-12-2003, 11:06 PM
Chris just one small quibble about your post about the birds flying altitudes...many geese fly well above 10,000 feet...some as high as 25K plus

Heheheeee... Andrew, you crack me up. I didn't know that, that's good stuff! I've never seen birds up above maybe 3,000 feet above the ground, myself--that's some gung-ho birds, I tell ya! Pr@, you and I are very different people, and I really appreciate you. If we were all the same in this world, it would be SO boring. (and I think I would get fed up with lots of other me's really quickly)

My sister and I are very different, too, and your info reminds me of a story of us when we were kids. I had just read this book when I was a kid, and was telling the family about it at dinner. It was an exciting story, where a blind girl was riding in a small propeller airplane while someone else flew. Suddenly, they struck a goose, which damaged the airplane and significantly injured the pilot, knocking him unconscious. So I'm telling this dramatic story to my family, about how she got on the radio, and other pilots met up with her, and talked her through flying the airplane, even though she's blind, and she landed safely saving everyone. Then after I'm done, with my family listening intently, my sister asks with a sad look on her face, "What happened to the goose?" :D

Ben, you certainly talk the pilot jargon well! Yes, the C-17 is the newest airplane the Air Force currently uses, a large 4-engine cargo transport. While the C-5 cargo airplane is actually even larger by a good amount, it is older and a little less efficient in design, so we can carry PROPORTIONALLY more stuff than they can in regards to our size and weight. All the airplanes the AF has that are based on the Boeing 707, of which there are actually quite a few, are much, much older--maybe 40 years. When the C-17 was first introduced a few years ago, yes, there were only a few pilots and airplanes. We're currently up to 110 C-17's I think, with another new one being produced every month. It's cool to fly a brand-new airplane, that still has that new smell in the cockpit and no wear and tear! We might be at 400 or more pilots now, I don't know. There are quite a few of us, with even more to come. I actually just started a brand new squadron of C-17 aircrew here, which has been sort of exciting.

As for your question, Ben, about descent rates, yeah, as you know, there are pretty much two things that will help you descend. First, if you increase drag on the aircraft, the airplane will want to descend faster to maintain the same airspeed instead of slowing down. An example of this is putting our landing gear down. (pretty much) The other thing is to reduce the amount of lift that the wings are producing, which you can do with speedbrakes and such. You just have to be careful not to reduce so much lift as to create a stall, so that the airplane doesn't fly anymore and becomes a rock, dropping out of the sky. (are you familiar with aerodynamics and what happens to airflow in a stall?) The concept of side-slipping an aircraft actually uses both of these principles to increase descent. By turning the aircraft sideways with the rudder (partially, not literally, for those who are less familiar) you present more surface area to oncoming air, thereby creating more drag. This is like the like putting your hand out the car window while you drive. If your palm is lined up with the wind, it will cut through the air and you won't feel much resistance. But if you turn your palm sideways so it is facing the front of the car, you suddenly feel a LOT of drag. But you also change the lift characteristics by side-slipping, where the wing that gets pushed forward is more exposed to the oncoming airflow, actually INCREASING lift, and the other wing is turned away from the wind, decreasing lift. But this second wing is now also partially blocked by the fuselage from oncoming airflow, killing lift even more. If you did nothing but put in rudder controls, the aircraft will actually bank and turn, with the forward wing coming up and the wing that's pulled back dropping. That's why a side-slip manuever uses right rudder application and left aileron, or vice-versa, to keep the airplane flying straight.

Side-slips can be effective, but you have to be careful. First, overly slipping the aircraft so that airspeed drops off and excessive lift is killed will cause a "cross-control stall", which is very dangerous. Instead of dropping straight like a normal stall, the aircraft will twist and turn, possibly wrapping up into a spin. Also, the airplane isn't designed to fly sideways, and the cross airflow creates undue mechanical stress on the airplane, especially the large cross-section of the vertical stabilizer, or tail. So side-slipping, while somewhat common in very small airplanes, especially gliders, which fly at slower airspeeds with less airflow, is almost NEVER practiced in larger aircraft.

So... an extreme descent rate, with idle thrust and speedbrakes, as well as landing gear and thrust reversers if applicable, is already a handful for the pilot flying the airplane. A little physically uncomfortable, too, especially if you begin the descent with an aggressive push-over, creating negative G's like the top of a roller coaster, or if you're in the cockpit, looking down at the ground at a very steep angle. To fly that kind of descent AND add in side-slipping for more descent would be even more uncomfortable, and in most aircraft bordering or crossing the line of being dangerous. I'm guessing that side-slipping by itself might create a 3,000 foot per minute descent rate, to further answer your question.

Dang it, there you go, getting me blabbering about flying junk again. :D

Paul, that was quite the lengthy post! Are you and I starting a new trend here in TTP?

You know you are living in 2003 when...

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You e-mail your mate who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends is that they do not have e-mail addresses.

6. When you go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business manner.

7. When you make phone calls from home, you accidentally dial "9" to get an outside number.

8. You've sat at the same desk for four years and worked for three different companies.

10. You learn about your redundancy on the11:00news.

11. Your boss doesn't have the ability to do your job.

12. Contractors outnumber permanent staff.

AND THE REAL CLINCHERS ARE...

13. You read this entire list, and kept nodding and smiling.

14. As you read this list, you think about forwarding it to your "friends".

15. You got this email from a friend that never talks to you any more, except to send you jokes from the net.

16. You are too busy to notice there was no No 9.

AND -scroll down

17. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a No 9. (gottcha)

Subject: Golf Balls

A man entered the bus with both of his front pockets full of golf balls and
sat down next to of all people a beautiful, you guessed it, blonde.
The blonde kept looking quizzically at him and his bulging pockets.
Finally, after many such glances from her, he said, "It's golf balls".

Never-the-less, the blonde continued to look at him thoughtfully and
finally, not being able to contain her curiosity any longer, asked:

"Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow?"

A Blonde in Wisconsin

As a trucker stops for a red light, a blonde catches up. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his truck, and knocks on the door. The trucker lowers the window and she says, "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load."

The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street. When the truck stops for another red light, the girl catches up again. She jumps out of her car, runs up and knocks on the door. Again, the trucker lowers the window. As if they've never spoken, the blonde says brightly, "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load!"

Shaking his head, the trucker ignores her again and continues down the street. At the third red light, the same thing happens again. All out of breath, the blonde gets out of her car, runs up and knocks on the truck door. The trucker lowers the ! window. Again she says, "Hi, my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!"

When the light turns green the trucker revs up and races to the next light. When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of the truck, and runs back to the blonde. He knocks on her window, and as she lowers it, he says...

"Hi, my name is Kevin, it's winter in Wisconsin and I'm driving the SALT TRUCK

Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time,
but don't point to their ass when they ask where the
bathroom is?

Why does your OB-GYN leave the room when you get undressed
if they are going to look up there anyway?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours?
They're both dogs!

What do you call male ballerinas?

Can blind people see their dreams? Do they dream??

If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that Acme
crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made
from vegetables, then what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from
morons?

Is Disney World the only people trap operated by a mouse?

Why do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
have the same tune?

Stop singing and read on . . . . . .. . . . .

Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Soup?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the
hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your ass?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he
gets mad at you, but when you take him on a car ride, he
sticks his head out the window?

Do you ever wonder why you gave me your e-mail address in

Happy Birthday, Tori! My birthday's the 19th, so I'm a Christmas baby too. And who knows... we could have our little girl any day now. We actually spent some time in the hospital today, and then went BACK later tonight because Jen was having contractions. But false alarms... we're still on hold!

Trev, those were just too funny. I liked the one about the hearse in the carpool lane and blind people dreaming. I'm actually curious about that, now.

I finally added our Hallmark ornaments for our collection this year. This habit really started buying my daughter Barbie ornaments. She's got enough to really deck out almost an entire tree, lol. I added 4 for her this year. She's actually got a Barbie stocking she expects something in every year. 8O Ok, actually even before that, I picked up some rather cool motion ornaments when I was married. Kimberly asked me about the ornaments, if I'd picked up any this year. She said someday when she moves out she plans to have a Barbie tree. So, I had to get busy, as I'd been a slacker so far this year!

But, there was a series called the classic car series that started around 13-14 years ago, and I got sucked in. Before you know it, I was collecting the cars, pedal cars, trains, trucks, and a few years ago Harleys, lol. Every year. I dropped out on the trucks and trains occasionally due to finances. But I always get the classic car and pedal car. The first classic car, a red corvette topped out at 165.00 value a few years ago. It's tumbled back to 75 value now. But someday, it will go back up. I have 2 Vettes. One with a green tree, and one with an amber tree. Cars can typically have a tree laid in them, convertibles, or a wreath, or something.

For true collectors, it's the first in a series that always becomes most valuable. So, this year, I started the firetruck collection in year one. What will all these be worth financially someday? I don't know. I really don't care. All I know is, we've enjoyed the collecting ritual, as well as talking about our favorites every year we put them up. :)

Occasionally, they have one in a Santa series or such that's just to cool to pass up. This year? It was Rockin and Rollin! This one has functional headlights and taillights, plays a Beachboys song if you press the cassette deck, or blows the horn if you press the horn. :)

http://www.hookedonhallmark.com/ornaments/ornimage/2003/2003rockinandrollin.gif

We used to go through the ritual of getting every hallmark ornament out of it's packaging and box every year. That got to be to much. Now, we take it out of the box, store the box in one of many hallmark boxes, and leave the ornament out in a curio cabinet all year. Well, the ones that sit or stand anyway.

Bummer, I was going to go to a LOTR party tonight kicking off with the extended version of Fellowship and then next week the extended Two Towers but a stomach bug has kept me around the house today. :(

My 4 year old freaked me out the other day....there's this game he plays on the PC made by fisher-price that's one of those educational / entertainment type programs called Tonka Search and Rescue.

Well he's a whiz with the mouse and has been since he was 2...I knew that, but the opening screen to this program asks you to sign in and he typed(correctly I might add) his full name: MATTHEW 8O .

Oh man, I'm in trouble...

His Mom showed him how to type it one day and he picked it up rather quickly...she says she showed him only once (yeah right) and he does it now all the time. I figured he memorized it but it really looks like he recognizes the letters and hunts them out on the keyboard.

Yikes!

8O and 8) all at the same time.

I've heard all sorts of stories where little kids excel at certain things as they're growing up, so it's not extraordinary but it is pretty cool to me (and that's all that counts).

I've been a bit on the puny side this week. My team lead said this week she had a couple of lymph nodes swollen. I'm a son of a gun, I had one like that this weekend. Not to surprising as I felt I was fighting an infection this week. I hope it's not the flu onset. I passed on flu shots. I'm not a believer in them. Something about injecting myself with a live virus just doesn't sound good to me.

In the military, everyone is FORCED to get an annual flu shot. I got the flu just a few days after I got the shot this year, which happens to some people regularly. Me, I'm a very healthy person, and I get sick only once a year at most, if not less.

Yeah, that was a little strange last night. I was dead asleep, when all of a sudden my very pregnant wife wakes me up at 2 AM, saying "honey, honey, wake up!" I wasn't sure if the baby was coming, or if she was having more back problems, or what. Then she tells me "We just captured Saddam Hussein". Okay, that was the last thing I expected to hear--almost random.

I may be flirting with death by saying this but if this is the worst it gets...this one is rather wimpy...I had much worse in the summer that lasted 2 and 1/2 weeks...lost 15 pounds (no joke) with that one. I don't recommend it as a diet plan though ;)

That which doesn't kill you....

Oh and Doug...I don't believe most innoculations are live virus. They are usually inactive (dead) or attenuated (weakened...mind you, that one is live, sort of). I think on the whole the flu-vaccine is pretty safe. It's a matter of personal choice. There's no right or wrong answer since you make the choice to get the shot or not...except for poor Chris.

I don't get the vaccine myself because I'm not in a risk category, nor am I around many people at work nor do I travel much (if ever) and I believe somewhat in natural immunity (that and I would have to pay...yup I'm cheap...that 10 is earmaked for the ROTK ;) ).

However, I had my shots as a kid and my kids are getting all of theirs. When they're of age they can make their own decision on the subject.

My brother is a nurse at one of our larger hospitals and has been getting the flu-vaccine for several years and said he's had no problems.

If you get a live attenuated vaccination, I don't think it's improbable that you might get the flu. Our immune system is sort of a lock and key type system.

Chris...I think that's rather inhumane that they force shots on everyone. If it was any other employer, you could take legal action for that. Nice to see that the government still respects individual choice

Especially since, in the end, you wind up getting the flu anyway.

Face it, in a hussle and bussle world, the stress to keep your job is one factor that pushes vaccinations. Employers simply don't allow the necessary time for someone to be sick (you get 5 sick days for the year and you come down with a 2 week flu...how's that suppose to work?). Course on the employer side of the coin why would they pay while you're dying at home...not their fault you're sick. Thar's 2 sides to every coin I suppose.

I'm lucky in that my job could potentially be done from the comfort of my bed (if I chose). Not everyone has that luxury.

Maybe I should try out Trilogy Tues (theatres that are showing all 3 LOTR movies)....I could do 10 hours of movies standing on my head...since I'm such a professional at sitting down in one spot. I laugh in the face of Deep Leg Thrombosis :D

Good afternoon all from a stormy Northeast.

Hey E, that's quite the little Viking you got there.

Andrew, I can well believe that Glenda was the cutest girl.

Lex, I do hope all will be well with your father and daughter. No one needs two family members with health problems at the same time.

Well, speaking about health: I'll try not to bore anyone, but I just got back from a visit with the eye specialist. The cataract is the least of my problems. Seems I have glaucoma in both eyes. So I'll be on drops for a long long time. I have to go for a field test to find out if there has been any eye pressure damage to the optic nerves, then back to the specialist for the results. All this between now and the end of next month. If no damage I will probably have to take drops forever to control the build up of liquid pressure in the eyes. The Doc said most cases medication can do the trick without going to surgery, so hopefully that will be the case. It was 2 years since my last eye exam so the real issue is how long have I had glaucoma. The the longer you have it undetected, the greater the chances of optic nerve damage. So far I have not had any loss of vision periphally or directly so maybe it has just begun. Anyway, it isn't the end of the world or anything. Just part of growing old, I guess.

Say, it's a good thing Saddam gave up before they sent Chris over to drop a smart bomb on hime.

Hi guys, sorry to hear about various troubles.

Gordon, the military views the shot thing as an issue where they need to make sure we are protected from various illnesses to stay ready to fight. The same thing came up when people didn't want to get the Anthrax or Smallpox shots. They're also mandatory; people aren't left the option to not get them, so that if we are hit with those weapons, we'll survive. Make no mistake about it, the military views me as an asset a lot of the time, that they've invested a lot of money in, and they don't want to see that go to waste.

Gordon, this really isn't bothering me. I look on it more as an aggravation than anything. Up until I retired in 2001 the worst I ever had was a few sniffles. George... if you've had no optic nerve damage then you should be fine if you use the drops. I have had glaucoma for about 10 years now in my right eye only. Pressure has been as high as 35 (40 will start causing pain - 60 is supposedly the max measured). Normal is around 16-18. I went for the first 6-7 years without anything and still no optic nerve damage but then my eye doc said no more contacts unless I would use the drops. The only bad thing about the drops was it would make my eye very red... especially wearing contacts. Since then I changed the type of drops I use from Xalitan to Travitan and have had no problems with redness. My pressure is now at about 10-11 in my right eye and 14-15 in my left. Even though I've never used drops in my left eye the pressure has dropped from about 19-20 down to the 14-15 range since using the drops in my right eye. The drops are kindly expensive but I get twice the distance having only one to medicate. I also went and got me some really good Hoya wide progressive lense glasses so I wouldn't have to wear my contacts as often. I use to sleep in them (for 10 years +) but the drops aggravate my eyes when I wear the contacts.

Of course George... we could grow us some home grown... that's supposed to relieve the pressure too.... then we wouldn't need drops. Makes you wonder about the first 6-7 years I didn't use drops huh? lol

Hi, Sonnie,
The Doc has prescribed Travitan so hopefully I won't get the red eye problem. Pressure was in the high twenties in the left eye and high thirties in the right. I start taking the drops tonight. The unkown about these things when you've never had them tends to be a bit worrisome, but hearing from someone who has the same problem and can discuss it intelligently is a real comfort. so thanks a lot, Sonnie.

As for the homegrown, hmmmm..... :)

Legal ???? 8O 8O 8O Wow! I'm movin' to Canada today! lol

George, that's fairly high if in the high 30's and I can imagine if you left that unmedicated for several years it might start getting into your peripheral vision.

Back when I first learned I had it I started researching it but couldn't find out a lot then. Since then there's been a host of info on the net and I've read about all of it. It's fairly easily treatable now with all the drops available. It just doesn't seem to be a big concern like it use to. Way back when (many years ago) they didn't have any medication and eventually people would get tunnel vision and ultimately go blind, although from the research I did it appears most people die of something else first. Since I was diagnosed I have not heard of the first person that has had any serious problems as a result of glaucoma. I've read where some people actually have taken the drops for a few years and the doc took them off later to not have anymore problems. That's not to say it may not give them problems again later on (as far as high pressure).

Maybe legal was too light (or optimistic) a word...I meant "decriminalized" which most people consider legal or "grey area" okay...you get a fine, no worse than speeding (actually speeding might carry a higher fine). It will be one of those wink wink nudge nudge type products.

I believe the US gov is pushing back hard on this one since, among other wars, they still have a war on drugs going on. With BC producing some of the best weed on the planet and easy access into US....they are are alittle ticked at this legislation.

http://canadaonline.about.com/library/issues/blimj.htm

Yup first Mary Jane and now mp3 downloads. Canada is a different place, that's fer sure.

For the record, weed doesn't interest me (nor any other smokable product) nor any product that you inject, snort etc...

Now the occasional beverage....hey, we all have our vices ;)

I don't think this is the worst legislation ever created, marijuana is a pretty benign drug in the grand scheme of drugs (certainly no worse than alcohol) and feel that this legislation may help free up the justice system for the more serious things out there.

You can read up on the CDN legalization of mp3 downloading in Tower of Power.

Sonnie you make me feel so much better. Seriously, though, I have already read up on the subject now that I know I have it. I'm feeling pretty good about things. But then I have always been a cockeyed optimist.

Now this weed thing. So I take it up because I have glaucoma and then end up getting lung cancer. Hmmm... :?

Although I know nothing about the subject just the fact that you're smoking just marajuan leaves vs all the other crap in regular cig's (tar, arsnic, etc.) has to count for something.

Oh, and Gordon I love the first picture. For those who don't know, that refers to the National Guard and Reserve forces. Normally, their commitment is to get together for training one weekend a month, and a two week period every year. However, many forces have been "activated" since September 11th, where they are suddenly Active Duty troops full-time. While every Guard and Reserve person knows that this is a possibility, they don't have a choice in the matter. Many or most of them had civilian jobs full-time, only doing this on the side. They have to leave their civilian jobs to come to active duty, which naturally means a large pay cut for many of them. What's very strange is that many units have now been activated for 2 years since September 11th, and have just been told that it will continue for next year as well.

The problem is, we've gone from a post-September 11th contingency reaction to sustained operations, but are trying to continue our way of business with short-term solutions like this and operating with waivers to standard procedures that accept additional risk for a limited time. But these short-term "stop-gap" measures have been kept in place for 2 years now, and there is no end in sight or plans to scale them back. :( Tough life, but we all signed our names on the line, so we're doing our best!

Andrew, I should be around New years day :) As for hotels, the Bessbourgh is charming, however I would probably stay at the Radisson. It's almost kitty corner and is a newer hotel with newer rooms and the view is good too. Plus I think they may still have some special for the year you were married. Now it may not work for you young-uns but for me because I was married in 1988, my room would only cost me $88 dollars. We held our reception at the Radisson, and was given one of the bridal suites.. It was a nice room(s) to be sure with his and her bathrooms, separate beadroom with living and dining room, huge whirlpool skylights and a beautiful view of the South Saskatchewan and Kiwanas Park.

Good Morning Everyone!

I don't drink acoholic beverages and I don't smoke.... okay... I do smoke an occasional cig but it's rare. I smoked for several years and quit on September 14, 1987. I was very sick and decided they were not helping the cause and giv'em up. I will on occasion smoke one for the heck of it. My mom and dad have always smoked and I'll smoke one with dad all along while having a cup of coffee but again it's on rare occasion.

I have always believed that pot was less harmful than drinking alcohol or smoking cigs. If anything, they should make alcohol illegal because it kills so many people other than just yourself. There are a lot of chemicals in alcohol and cigs that is not in pot. Pot is natural but that surely doesn't make pot okay. Pot is illegal here... period. I don't believe you can get it for any reason legally. I have read where people with cancer smoke it to help with the pain and nausea from treatments but I don't think it cures anything.

George and I sitting around in the HT room smokin' a doobie and listening to Pink.... hmmmmm... not a bad idea cause I really like Pink... lol I think Pink Floyd music was made for the pothead.

Okay... maybe we shouldn't talk about this anymore. Someone might get to thinkin' were a bunch of potheads. :D

Hi Everybody!!

I have been so busy, but the worst was we had a HomeOffice visit yesterday.
The challenge was to make the place look like a doll house. We did it, and even exceeded my expectations of what I figured we could do to get there at this time of the year. So,,End of Story, the H.O. visitor's were very pleased., maybe somewhat astonished as well..
I am very happy it's all over and can now concentrate on day to day business for the next two weeks.
I am off today , so just planning to rest and relax.

I also would have to come down on the side of "no drugs whatsoever". What I've wondered, though, is where do you draw the line? Alcohol is a drug, too, as well as nicotine and even caffeine to a point. I certainly drink stuff with caffeine in it, I have an occaional drink, and even the dietary supplements I use with my current fitness program, while "all-natural" slowly alter the physical state, (for the better) without doing anything like steroids. I've never done any drugs, though, legal or not, outside of prescribed medication at those rare times when I get sick.

Trev: Nice X-box! I don't have a gaming console, but I wonder if I'll almost be obligated to buy one when I'm done with my theater. I actually fly over Saskatchewan and other parts of Canada when we fly from here in Washington state straight to Europe, taking the Northern Route. (anybody heard of the term "Great Circle Route"?)

E: Yeah, I can't believe that guy up and decides to go on television saying that the whole Saddam capture was staged, with no evidence or solid reasoning to draw that conclusion. Talk about silly politics at an inappropriate time! Not someone I'd vote for...

Eduardo: Tell me about it. I just had a water pump break in my Jeep, spraying coolant all over the engine bay. I had to replace my drive belt too.

E: Those pictures came up as Red X's for me! I did follow the website link, though. Funny!

Our baby's due date isn't for another 3 weeks or so, but Jen's already showing some signs, being 1cm dialated with spurts of contractions. So she may very well come early, on my birthday this Friday or Christmas.

Cool!! Chris..Could very well be a Christmas baby.

Gordon,,They made round jewel boxes at the Micheals craft store.

The boys might enjoy it.

Bet you got lots of chicks n stuff.

I have never taken any drugs or such, really have no respect for it.
I do have the occasional drink though. Usually Beer. However , i just recently went for over two years without a drop..strange.
Drinking the odd beer here and there seems to help keep me sane though. Takes the edge off the day to day pressures from work and such.

A good reminder: take time to appreciate what you have now.

On the last day before Christmas, I hurried to go to the supermarket

to buy the gifts I didn't manage to buy earlier. When I saw all the

people there, I started to complain to myself: 'It is going to take

forever here and I still have so many other places to go...'

Christmas really is getting more and more annoying every year.

How I wish I could just lie down, go to sleep and only wake up

after it was over.

I started to curse the prices, wondering if kids

really play with such expensive toys. While looking in the toy

section, I noticed a small boy of about 5 years old pressing a doll

against his chest. He kept on touching the hair of the doll and

looked so sad. I wondered who this doll was for. Then the little boy

turned to the old woman next to him: 'Granny, are you sure I don't

have enough money?' The old lady replied: 'You know that you

don't have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.' Then she

asked him to stay here for 5 minutes while she went to look around.

She left quickly.

The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand.

Finally, I started to walk towards him and asked who he wanted to

give this doll to. 'It is the doll that my sister loved most and wanted

so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Claus

would bring it to her.' I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus will

bring it to her, after all, and not to worry. But he replied to me

sadly. 'No, Santa Claus can not bring it to her where she is now. I

have to give the doll to my mother so that she can give it to her

when she goes there.' His eyes were so sad while saying this. 'My

sister has gone to be with God. Daddy say that Mummy will also go

to see God very soon, so I thought that she could bring the doll with

her to give it to my sister'. My heart nearly stopped.

The little boy

looked up at me and said: 'I told daddy to tell mummy not to go yet.

I asked him to wait until I come back from the supermarket' Then

he showed me a very nice photo of him where he was laughing. He

then told me: 'I also want mummy to take this photo with her so

that she will not forget me.' 'I love my mummy and I wish she

doesn't have to leave me but daddy says that she has to go to be with

my little sister' Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very

quietly.

I quickly reached for my wallet and took a few bills and

said to the boy. What if we checked again, just in case if u have

enough money?' 'Ok' he said. 'I hope that I have enough.' I added

some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to

count it. There was enough for the doll, and even some spare

money. The little boy said: 'Thank you God for giving me enough

money' then he looked at me and added: 'I asked yesterday before I

slept for God to make sure I have enough money to buy this doll so

that mummy can give it to my sister. He heard me' 'I also wanted to

have enough money to buy a white rose for my mummy, but I didn't

dare to ask God too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll

and the white rose.' 'You know, my mummy loves white roses

A few minutes later, the old lady came again and I left with my

trolley. I finished my shopping in a totally different state from when

I started. I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind. Then I

remembered a local newspaper article 2 days ago, which mentioned

of a drunk man in a truck who hit a car where there was one young

lady and a little girl. The little girl died right away, and the mother

was left in a critical state The family had to decide whether to pull

the plug on the life-assisting machine, because the young lady

would not be able to get out of the coma. Was this the family of the

little boy?

Two days after this encounter with the little boy in mind, I read in

the newspaper that the young lady had passed away.I couldn't stop

myself and went to buy a bunch of white roses and I went to the

mortuary where the body of the young woman was exposed for

people to see and make last wish before burial.

She was there, in her

coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of

the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place

crying, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that

this little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to that day,

hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a drunk man had

taken all this away from him.

Now you have 2 choices:

1) Send this message to everybody that you know.

2) Or delete it and do as if it never touched your heart.

If you send this message, maybe you will

help prevent someone drunk to go driving.

FRIENDS ARE LIKE ANGELS, WHO HELP US FLY WHEN OUR WINGS HAVE

FORGOTTEN HOW

TO FLY.

I played the drums guys. We were not a hard rock band. Rather, the type music we played was from these artists for example: I'm sure there was a lot more I can't recall.

Lynard Skynard (Can you say Sweet Home Alabama?) and a few others.

Allmon Brothers, almost the entire Filmore East album

Edgar Winters Frankenstein

Get this, B.B. King blues We'd sometimes jam the blues for an hour at a time in practice. My all time favorite blues number was Stormy Monday, a redone song by the Allmon Brothers I think.

Chuck Berry, Johnny B good, :)

and of course, the one, the only Eric Clapton. Off the slow hand album for example and others.

At one time, we packed up a 24 foot truck pretty well with gear. We had to rent a truck for each job. We played of course, school dances, private parties, and a couple of "dive" club engagements. I once got accused of stabbing a guy after a gig, because I supposedly matched a description of the guy. Fortunately, I had an alliby, as I had just come off stage.

At another hole in the wall club in a place called Newport TN, a guy got shot in the parking lot while we were there. Talk about scary.

Both guitarists had 8-10 foot tall stacks of Marshall amps, we had a keyboard player with a piano and portable organ complete with dual Leslie cabinets, PA systems, etc... I had and still have a double bass set of Pearl drums.

Ah... much better. I did some quick uploading and resized the picture. I wish I could take credit for the actual bathroom construction. It's rather nice. But all my installation was the shelf, the TV, and the wiring which you can even see. (which is a testiment to itself, I always believe) My wife found that great little metal rack that fits over the top of the tub. You can put a book and other things on it while you take a bath--it even has a candle holder and wine glass clip!

The TV can be seen from the sink and the bathtub. If you use a picture flip mode, you can even see it in our full-length mirrors from the shower! The toilet has it's own little room, so potty TV watching is out. :D The remote I bought for the setup is waterproof and floats, so you can even use it in the tub. It also transmits RF, to a RF station I placed in the bedroom, so you can control DVD's, satellite TV, etc from the bedroom and then pipe it in to watch on the bathroom TV. Rather handy.

Here's my old thread on the remote:

Today's reading is from the Book of Corporate Life, Chapter 1, verses 1-15:

1. In the beginning was the Plan.
2. And then came the Assumptions.
3. And the Assumptions were without form.
4. And the Plan was without Substance.
5. And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.
6. And the Workers spoke among themselves saying, "It is a crock of shit
and it stinks."
7. And the Workers went unto their Supervisors and said, "Its a crock of
dung and we cannot live with the smell."
8. And the Supervisors went unto their Managers saying, "It is a container
of organic waste, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."
9. And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, "It is a vessel of
fertilizer, and none may abide its strength."
10. And the Directors spoke among themselves, saying to one another, "It
contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong.
11. And the directors went to the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, "It
promotes growth, and it is very powerful."
12. And the Vice Presidents went to the President, saying unto him, "It has
very powerful effects."
13. And the President looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.
14. And the Plan became Policy.
15. And that is how shit happens.

W o o o o o w. Talk about widescreen...

So Lex was a drummer and Chris was a horn man. Yeah I played a lot of trumpet in my younger years. I studied classic but leaned toward jazz and pops. We had this little combo that played at weddings and holiday occasions. And since I could read music, I often found a little studio work with the local radio station and even as 2nd trumpet with a big dance band now and then. But after I got married, had children and wandered into management in publishing, well the music got pushed aside. I no longer play, though I still own a trumpet. The trouble with blowing a horn, as Chris well knows, is that you have to practice continually to keep up the lip. If I picked up the horn right now, I'd be good for maybe one tune before the lip puffed up, keeping me from hitting the high notes. But I love the sound of the trumpet and all those great trumpeteers from Armstrong to Davis in jazz and the big band sounds of Harry James and Ray Anthony. Man, think I'll go put something on the turntable...

Gord ever thought of getting one of the digital keyboards?

Got one...from way back when...a Roland D-5 and an even older Yamaha DX-21 (back when there was only fm synthesis...this was the DX-7's little brother, the DX-7 was legendary in the 80's)...problem with digital keyboards are...

a. Key's are not weighted
b. generally only give you 5 octaves to use (not enough range for some music).

They are fun to hook up to a sequencer (now all done on the computer) through midi play with sounds and layer tracks.

I hadn't really used it for a while and when the kids came along, I had to pack things up because they were getting into things and we needed room for the 1000+ plus toys they have. When things settle down I'll pull it out again.

Nothing beats a real piano (in an upright or a baby grand). I've played on a baby grand once or twice and they are beautiful 8) . A girl I was sweet on (or maybe it was to get to her piano) had one...so I had free access to a real baby grand. Even my crappy playing sounded nice.

My Mom has a beautiful Yamaha Upright at home. Yamaha's tend to have a brighter sound which I really like (no I don't mean their receivers).

Don't get me wrong, I'm no musician...but I've always loved playing music. Today I would suck pretty royally....it would take a full year of scales just to get started again. With my luck, by the time I'm ready to take it up again I'll have severe arthritis

Gord my boss said that some of the new digital keyboards do have weighted keys now...not sure on the octaves though...not that it matters for me i'm not at all musically inclined:(

I've always wanted to play guitar or piano though so maybe one day I'll take lessons with lauren:)

Enjoy the show E!

Likely heading out to see what I can find for a christmas present for Glenda tonight...I wonder what best buy has in stock for vacuums or blenders:) (Yeah right she'd kill me!)

Right On!

Trev got the gift of BIG SCREEN.

At least your video will now balance out that kick ass audio setup you have ;)

Congrats Trev, you must be getting giddy.

Our new work PC's show up tomorrow so it will be an early X-mas for us too :T

Andrew,

Greg said he'd help me by bringing the truck. So we will see you Saturday afternoon (how's about noon?)

So Andrew disguises the true reason for going to Saskatoon. He gave us a gushy love story but the REAL reason is to compare Trevor's 2HD with his 1HD :W :rf

Good Evening Everyone!

Wow! What some heavy duty posting going on today.

So now we have the TTP Band or as Daddy-George says the HT Guide Orchestra. Didn't know so many of you were so talented. Hey... I did a little Karaoke when I had my entertainment business and I could do the lighting. We could have a bonafied gig.

We got the mudding started on the sheetrock today. I posted some new pics over in my construction thread in Spaced Out which some of you have already seen. I worked very little today... mostly observing.

I was reading my manual for my 2HD last night Trev. Pretty interesting. This is my first PJ so I was anxious to read it. Now I can't wait to get it up and running.

As for New Years, no real plans yet...are you Glenda and/or Lauren interested in coming over? Maybe we'll do that games night thing I mentioned when we went to the movies last.

Trevor, you seem to have thrown people off with that Panny.
