Sonnie yes those are fine optical cables...if you look for the ones for a playstion or Xbox they might be even cheaper for the exact same thing (they're also mode by AR)

Yup optical is optical for the most part...there's better quality connectors and yes glass is prefered but you won't find glass in any store I've been into. Thicker outer covers might protect against it breaking while bending but to be honest I've got a ultra cheapie and a more expensive optical cable and they're both fine. I can even get a signal from them if I hold the optical connector an inch away from the Rotel!

Yeah, I just assumed that Lex wouldn't/didn't make optical cables. That is too bad when components only have optical and not coax.
You guys ever heard of this site? http://www.pricejapan.com/ They sell consumer electronics direct from Japan at some fantastic prices. They've got the new Panasonic AE-500 projector for only $1796, and the Marantz DV8400 DVD player w/DVI for only $1200. The new Panny starts shipping in less than 2 weeks!

The price on the new Panny is cheaper than the 300 model here in Toon-Town..Plus there is a guy on another Forum selling a used Panny for $1,500 USA..
that makes this one a better deal..

I went ahead and ordered the AR cable. The shipping cost more than the cable.
I thought maybe someone local would have something but everywhere I called wanted $20 for a 6' cable when I really only needed a 3'. Most of those were RCA brand... there was one other brand I'd never heard of.
Neat site Chris... the Denon 2900 is $880 + I guess the 5% + shipping. Hard to read that Japanese though (English translation not working).

I'm really surprised at you Sonnie. If a signal's worth carrying, it's worth carrying right. what digital cable would you guess you will listen to the most in your system? TV. I can tell you that 5.1 sounds awesome with the glass optical in my system. It's true I never was an optical kind of guy. But I do try to keep an open mind. The glass does make a big difference. I'd always heard that was so, and now I know it's very true.
The reason they aren't on the web site yet, is one, I was evaluating them myself before making them available, and 2 I just haven't had time or interest in making site changes lately. But I have 2 more 1 meter, a 2 meter and a 3 meter on hand. They will be trimmed out in the usual CAT fashion.

lol Lex... you are right but then again this optical cable is only temporary, besides, I've always thought like Andrew, optical is optical (maybe not?).
Once the 921 receiver from Dish is available I will be using coax digital so I didn't want to spend too much on one. The one I got cost me about 15 bucks shipped and reviews of it were good. It should get the job done and maybe I will need to order a coax digital from you soon. The 921 has suppose to already be available for about a year now... maybe Christmas time it will be here then I want to wait a few months to let them get the bugs worked out. You know.
However, having said all that... If you are needing to get rid of those I'd be willing to consider (depending on price) one of the 1 meter optical's you have and you can send it with my other cables. It can replace the Monster optical I have on my other satellite receiver that's about 8 years old.

Gordon, you've heard of peoples' actual experiences with Price Japan? I'd like to hear about it.
Trevor- Yup, the new Panasonic AE500, Sanyo Z2, and Sony HS20 are all native widescreen 720p projectors. (minimum--I think the Sony is actually WXGA 768) Those right now seem to be the frontrunners in my consideration.
Sonnie- I didn't see any Denon on the PriceJapan website. perhaps I wasn't looking in the right spot! (I only tried English pages)

Ahh, easy Pr@, that's a bit too much :sn for a Tuesday morning :tired: xx) I need to wear 8) to protect my poor wittle eyes!
We were at a customer's house because they got a new 50" Hitachi LCD widescreen and I had to adjust their Pronto to control it. Now that they have full-fledged HTs both upstairs and downstairs they're gonna get another Pronto so they can have one for each HT. I like visiting places like this because I can mooch off their cable HDTV service for a few hours. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford my own HDTV service.
I took a break out of pretending to work to clean my keyboard, mouse, screen, and tubicle amp. It was getting all dusty. It's clean now and the tubies are all shiny again! :)
Speaking of optical, when our customer took delivery of his new TV the delivery people hooked it up for him, including his HT components. We were looking at the back of the receiver and noticed that both coax inputs and the optical input had cables hooked up. This was puzzling, since he only had two components hooked up, the cable box and the DVD player, so where was the third digital cable coming from? After tracing the cables, we discovered that he had both the coaxial AND the optical cables connected between the DVD and the receiver. Maybe he wanted to make extra sure that the digital audio would make it to the receiver! We unhooked the optical.

Lex
As you know, I was using my front projector for daily TV. Piling up over 100 hours in 3 weeks, I began rethinking this decision, I wanted something else I could fit in my living room to watch daily TV stuff on. Save the PJ for good stuff.
So, the last item I am adding for a very long time:
32" Wega Plasma TV, 16:9 852 X 1024 HDTV 55 pounds, and it's sitting on my coffee table. I just slide it out of the way for watching the PJ. Eventually, I think I am going to make a custom table for my PJ that includes a place for the plasma.

Actually Sonnie we said more or less the same thing...pure glass is prefered over plastic for optical cables and if doug's are priced well (as I'm sure they are they'll technically be a supperior cable. If you'll hear a difference is another story though:)

IMHO using glass optical cables for Toslink is like trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. sure the cable will be superior but what's inside that Toslink output? A ten-cent LED. What's in the input? A ten-cent photo diode. Would Silvercats improve an Aiwa mini-system?
Just my worthless humble opinion. I have no intention of shooting down Lex's glass cables, but maybe when "fiber to the home" starts happening you can be the fiber supplier or something. :)

Well, it saved me an additional 650 off the cheapest online price, assuming at least 150 for shipping, which is high, but some places charge even more.
I didn't want a luggable. I wanted something movable fairly easily. Plasma fit the bill.

http://home.nc.rr.com/ejimenez
Thanks Sonnie. Well, things aren't as good as they appear Sonnie. Truthfully, I've overextended. But I am DONE for a long time. Really, the projector and plasma all resulted because my RPTV went out. That would not have happened otherwise. Granted, I went overboard, as usual. But it wasn't practical to run a projector 3-6 hours a night with background TV on it. Instead, I hope to extend my bulb life a LONG time. at 500 a piece for a bulb, the plasma will pay for itself over time provided it yields good service.
I like it pretty well at this point, but with it's high resolution, the quality of the picture is very signal sensitive. Actually, the ED quality sets probably yield a better picture for most broadcast TV. But I wanted true HD. 32" was the right size for my needs as well. I didn't want larger.
Thanks Eduardo!

I've been doing some honey-do's around the house and fiddlin' with my HT wiring.
I had to change out the a/c plug on my Panamax to a mini plug for 12VDC triggering from my 1066. Also building a new back panel to go behind the 1066 since it's a little shorter than the Sony.
Yeah, haven't seen a few of the regulars lately. I've seen David in the other forums here on htguide but not much TTP activity. Haven't seen E anywhere recently nor Greg, Bing, Paul, Rick, and others I can't think of right this moment.
What happened with Siligoose? I haven't seen him anywhere lately either.

We had a damp spot on the bedroom ceiling this morning so I crawled up into the attic and wiggled my way to the outside edge...which was a very tight fit and being surrounded by fiberglass so I felt claustrophobic and itchy all over. I think there's a leak in the singles right at the outside edge that's seeping back in under a wax paper layer thats sitting on top of the ceiling. there's sawdust clippings on top of that then a thick layer of pink fiberglass so I should be ok insulation wise. We're getting new shingles soon though so hopefully that will address the water problem

Morning folks... another slow week, can't wait for the weekend so I can sleep in. :tired:
We went over to a neighbor's house to help them install a new VCR and it turned into an impromptu "HT" tune-up session. Well, not HT per se, since they only have a Sony Wega TV, VCR and DVD player, but I was able to tweak some things. It's an older couple, who got the DVD player for Christmas from their kids last year. They got an S-video cable with it but never hooked it up (they were using composite), so I hooked that up for them. I could have used component cables but they didn't have any, and for a non-HDTV setup there's little difference between S-video and component anyway. Then I ran home and got my Avia disc and calibrated the TV, so it looks a lot better now. I also set up the DVD player for 4:3 letterbox--they had it on 16:9 wide and anamorphic DVDs looked stretched, since their older Wega doesn't have a 16:9 mode.
They might want to go HT down the road though.

I agree Trev, Bob doesn't have my taste for ladies, that's for sure.
Sounds like fun Kevin.... One of Angibug's boss men ask if I would help him set up an HT room in their new house they are building. This is going to be a nice house (over 5000 sq. ft.) and they have some bonus space in their upstairs. They had visited some people who had a dedicated HT ($30K HT) and he wanted something similar (sound proofing and HT chairs, etc). Anyway, he calls me up and I start talking with him a little and finally he tells me he wants to spend about $2500. I told him he won't get what he saw and heard at his friends house for no $2500. I advised him it would take considerably more, so he's now changed his mind. He said the max he would ever ever spend would probably be $3K. Oh well.... he will probably need one of those HTIB deals to go with a mid size RPTV.

Ok, this is somewhat of a rant, but it's not work related this time!
This is an open note to all the former Deputy Ministers of Liberia, Auditor Generals and managers of African banks, Ogoni princesses, Dubai merchants, members of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian bank managers, sons and widows of murdered Zimbabwean farmers, for that matter anyone on the African or Asian continent looking to launder money, read my lips, I'M NOT INTERESTED! Also, if you're emailing me because I was named the winner of a European lottery due to a mix-up, I DON'T PLAY ANY EUROPEAN LOTTERIES. And even if I had, I wouldn't have given out my email address. I'm not a gullible idiot that falls for these things (maybe 15 years ago I was, but not now).
Is it me or do all murdered Zimbabwean farmers have millions of dollars they want laundered? Sheesh... I'm getting hit with these things this week, like I was being Swenned last week.
Maybe it's time to give up computers and start using snail mail for correspondence again. C'mon, are people really that stupid that they'd respond to these things. Don't answer that... :bash:

Sonnie tell him to get a Sanyo Z1 and Dalite HCCV screen. That should eat half your $3K budget. With the rest buy a receiver, DVD player and 3 pairs of bookshelf speakers and a sub. None of the audio gear will be top grade but I bet he'd be happy having the big screen.

Pretty quiet day!
Why Rednecks Are Not Paramedics
A couple of rednecks are out in the woods hunting when one of them suddenly grabs his chest and falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing; his eyes are rolled back in his head.
The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911.
He gasps to the operator, "I think Bubba is dead! What should I do?"
The operator, in a calm soothing voice says,"Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let's make sure he's dead."
There is a silence... and then a shot is heard.
The guy's voice comes back on the line,"Okay, now what?"

Happy Saturday, guys. Jen and I bought The Two Towers on the high definition Pay Per View Channel last night. Great show, and the picture was great, but not quite as fantastic as I might have expected.
Then I turn on the TV here a few minutes ago, and see the Air Force Academy Drum and Bugle Corp (of which I was a member) marching in Redskin stadium on HDNet! WOW! My old corp, in Dolby Digital and high def... that's cool. Turns out that Navy vs. Air Force is on HDNet right now. Only downer is that Air Force is losing early in the 3rd quarter. Gotta get back to the game. Go Falcons!

I was just curious why he picked linksys not another brand...I didn't mean it as a slight against linksys...now that they're part of Cisco their future looks even more promising.

Why linksys Mats? Going wireless is fantastic though:yesnod:
Because it was the cheapest kit... looked at DLink and ZyXEL (ZyXEL due to the ZyWALL 2 that I have for the VPN connection into the office) but Linksys was the cheapest... and I think it's just as good as the others on the market... Worked well so far.
Would have prefered the ZyXEL to keep to the same brand but they didn't have the 1000G Access Point in the store yet and I really wanted the 54MB connection.

My Vols pretty well got embarassed by Auburn tonight. Well, we actually had a chance to tie in the last 3 minutes, and were close. But the pressure was to much, and after having icewater in his veins the whole 4th quarter, our QB threw an INT, unfortunately, and that was it. 28-21, we went down.
Auburn is for real, that's for sure. Word is, they have not 1, not even 2, but 3 running backs that will likely go pro when they leave. Cadillac Williams reminded me a lot of South Carolina's running back. Slippery as can be. I don't think we even put a dent in his fender.

Lex, I feel your pain. Air Force lost to Navy of all people today. Navy always sucks as a team. We were 5-0, beat a few decent teams like BYU, get ranked, and then lose to one of our rival sister service academies. The two games we strive to NEVER lose each year are to Army and Navy. Crap.
I think you're right about Auburn. Looks like the played well. Auburn was my 2nd choice of colleges, actually!

I'd take all that less the poison Ivey Eduardo. Me and poison don't get along at all! I recall once when I was a kid, I had poison ivey, a whelped up rash from raw fiberglass exposure (working on a dune buggy), and a 2nd degree burn on my leg from a motorcycle. While at the gas station getting gas, I goosed it to turn around, and didn't realize I was in an oil slick. She went down hard, after riding a long time on the dirt, it was hot as a firecracker. The poison was all around the burn on my leg, that was like 4" long and 3" wide or something. I was miserable!

Lex, I thought surely your VOL's would pull out the win against Awburn. They are our biggest rival no doubt. Although Awburn got off to a really weak start they could easily win out the season. Cadillac is awsome!
The Tide continues it's woes. We could lose out the rest of our season. We have absolutely no depth. BOTH of our QB's have shoulder injuries. We are playing a redshirt freshman now and he is like a newborn without a passie. We are gonna suffer through a few seasons I'm afraid.

Well, had we not fumbled in the 4th qtr OR thrown that int at the end, we might have come away with the win. But the facts are, we got outplayed the first half completely. Even still, we were only 7 down at the half, and could have done it, were it not for those 2 errors.
Yes, I heard the Tide got it bad yesterday. I fully expect us to loose at least 2 more games. So, my expectations are lower now. However, they were truly never that high. Though we've played good at times, we've not really dominated anyone. Senior leadership of Casey Clausen almost pulled this out yesterday. But where will we be next year without him. sigh. He's no Payton Manning, but he's a pretty tough kid.

Yipes, we have a Yankees fan on here? You don't wanna know what we do to Yankees fans up here in the northeast... :wedgie: is only the beginning  ;) We're all Red Sox fans around here. I don't follow them too closely since they rarely make it past the championships, and I'm not much into sports anyway but heck even I'd watch a Red Sox/Cubs world series. The d*mn Yankees win almost every year, they should stop hogging the limelight and give someone else a chance for once. ;)
I had a busy weekend. One of my HT/computer customers called with a problem on Saturday, so I went over to her place and cleaned a ton of spyware etc. off her system left there by her college son. Sunday my dad came over and we started putting up a new metal shed for our firewood. The old one collapsed under all the snow we got last winter, and we're finally putting the new one up. The roof isn't on yet, that'll be next weekend's project. This time around we got the roof beef-up kit so it can handle all the snow better.
I got the furnace up and running Saturday morning. The furnace guy came over Friday night but he didn't have the parts to fix the exhaust blower, so I found a place online that sells a compatible blower and I ordered one. In the meantime I came up with a nut & bolt kludge to hold the old blower motor onto the housing (one of the mounts is busted) so we can have heat, which has unfortunately become a necessity already. It should work great until the replacement blower arrives later on in the week.
Otherwise, just the same old, same old, or as Pat said earlier, S.S.D.D.

Heatley facing more serious charges.
Atlanta Thrashers forward Dany Heatley has been charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree in connection with an accident last week which led to the death of teammate Dan Snyder on Sunday night. A spokesman for the district attorney's office, Erik Friedly, said the charge was based on a preliminary finding that Heatley was driving recklessly..
I was shocked to hear yesterday that the 25 year old Dan Snyder passed away. I feel so bad about the situation. It's very sad.
Dan Heatly is only 22 and would have been an NHL superstar as he was well on his way to that status. This is something that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life.

Good Afternoon Everyone!
Eduardo, I always liked those Stomp shows on TV... they are cool... I know it would be neat to see one live.
Someone was talking about buying a popcorn machine.... maybe Chris?

Actually, that's a pretty good price for a 4 oz. popcorn machine. I'd have to dig deeper to look into build quality and stuff. Some machines have plastic or lack certain features.
There's just something about having an "antique" popcorn machine as part of your theater lobby or rec room. Not just function, but it adds a certain flair and overall feel to the whole experience. IMHO, of course.
for those who want to save on popcorn, you can always get this for $60 or so! It's about 12" high or so, part of a line of "mini-stands". I've got the mini-Sno Cone stand, thanks to my loving wife, and they make ones for hot dogs and cotton candy, too.

Our local hardware store has a popper similar to the Whirley Pop above (it may be one - I'll have to pay closer attention next time). Every time I walk in that place it smells great. I always grab me a small bag (it's free) and it is fantastic tasting popcorn.
I still enjoy getting out our Whirley Pop at home. We have popped almost an entire case (60 bags) since last Christmas.
AND.... I got my Denon DVD-2900 in today. Ya-hooooooooo!
Should get all my CatCables in tomorrow so I'll be havin' fun!

Curious though.
In the USA they also have a Denon 5900. Did you get a chance to have a look at that one?
I would be interested in it especially since it has the Denon Link included, Unfortunately it's not available in Canada..I wonder how much it is though..

Trevor, here's (http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/index.cfm?fuseaction=Threads.viewthread&Tid=83087&Forum=2&StartRow=1&CFB=1) the thread in A/V Chalet that talks about the 5900. levesque is from Québec and he says he paid 1400$ US. It retails for $2K.
I did consider it but just couldn't pay that much. I got the 2900 for $549. It tested in the top three in the shootout and any improvement couldn't be that dramatic I wouldn't think. I would have gotten a 1600 or 3800 for a little less but they didn't have SACD.
Do I smell popcorn? ummmm ummmmm!

I might as well chime in as well. :)
Just got back from my cousins. We mounted the projector to the ceiling, looking pretty good! He's got a real screen up and of course it's hooked up with a nice set of component cables from CAT! We got the speakers pretty much calibrated. And now I think he wants a better sub. His Def Tech pretty much nose dives at 30Hz.
I hope to chime in some more. I'm here in spirit as allways and more as a lurker.
Sonnie, congrats on the new player.

Hey, they turned off the content filtering once again at work...
Living here in Atlanta, the Dan Snyder death was very sad for many hockey fans, and it even affected the Braves after hearing of his demise after losing to the Cubbies on Sunday night. It put their divisional playoff loss in perspective and paled in comparison to the loss that Dan Snyder's family is going through. It's just a very tragic thing to have happened to all involved.
Local sports talk radio want a total overhaul of the Braves, starting with the coach, Bobby Cox. But, like someone else said, the divisional playoffs are more of a function of luck in a tight 5 game series. You can get by with 2 hard throwing pitchers.
I did pick up a small toy, the Canon A70 digital camera, and have been shooting with it just to see what it can do, and can't do. But I do like the manual capabilities for shutter speed and aperture size, even when the flash is turned off. This will come in handy for me. Here's the only photo (http://www.patcave.com/fred1639.jpg) I've taken that is available for web viewing. Being able to go flashless with a decent shutter speed helped to capture the moment without scaring my kitty.
Hope everyone else is doing well.

John Smotlz made the statement that if the Braves lost the Divisional Series that there would be some significant changes within the organization. Hey, it's worse than NFL's Broncos and Bills combined.... 12 consecutive Division titles and only 1 World Series Championship.

Hi Everyone! ;h
I've been on hiatus for a little while, and I just wanted to drop in and say HI!
Trevor, great picture of your daughter! She's a definite cutie [I mean that in the most respectful way possible!]
So, my HK325 still has not arrived yet. According to UPS, it apparently is held up in Louisville, KY. Kinda funny, considering it was supposed to be in Winnipeg on Monday of this week! I called JandR about it and they are on the case. I hope they are able to get to the bottom of the issue, but I'm not too worried about it - they've been awesome, and I'm in no rush.
I picked up an RP82 today! Thanks to Andrew, who gave me and a couple other guys a heads up. Too bad for them that I was first to the store! Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, but I'm so excited! I also have the Matrix Reloaded on DVD. Matrix + RP82 + 57"Big Screen on the holiday weekend = a VERY happy Mike!!
My GF works @ Blockbuster a couple hours a week, so she gets to preview movies a week in advance. Boy, on weeks like this one, does it ever come in handy!
You guys want to do me a favor? Bug Andrew to sell me his power amp! I think he might anyway...but in case he's on the fence :P
Take care all...!

Guy's , we usually put some up for George as it gives his heart a bit of a kickstart in the morning, however I figured I would dedicate one to Eduarado since he really seems to enjoy them the most. :P

I agree we need to remind everyone to make sure pictures such as those are surrounded by SIMG tags if they might be seen during working hours...or better yet if its not the weekend please use the SIMG tags as girlie pics from last night are still there when I scroll down the page.
http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
Well, what really concerns me is getting it on work hard drives. Just because you delete it from Explorer, it's not gone. If they wanted to fry your a$$, that's pretty good ammo. It can be seen as sexist, even if not technically lude. Especially true in a government job.

Oh yeah me too, quicky scrolled to the bottom once I opened it. TTP is becoming a non-work safe site :)
In an effort to post more 'content', I'll just say that I had a PITA with my car recently. Some nice guy had opened a door on it and the dent set me back $120 to fix. GRRRR, nothing like coming to the parking lot after work and seeing a nice dent in your passenger door.
Broke my toe a couple of weeks ago, been annoying not being able to get out and about. All healed up now, planning on hiking this Sunday.
Have a good weekend folks!

Lex you can set IE to flush cache and history as soon as you close it. Then the pics are gone from your HD. Run a defrag once in a while and it'll be difficult to recover them.
Of course there's always my oughta-be-patented Stealth Browser...

Good Evening Everyone!
Yep, I typically allow TTP to load while minimized or behind another window just in case. The SImg tags should really be used. :P
Yeppie Lex! The optical is approved! And a very classy job on the finish. It does a wonderful job with HDTV. I definitely would like to try it side by side with the Jagwire on the 2900. I think I can connect them both up between the 1066 and 2900 then switch between inputs.... however my hearing is not par so I may not notice what others may notice. It will still be neat to listen anyway.
Ah Jehan... sorry to learn about your "toe" and your "doe"... lol Glad the "toe" is better now.
Okay... gotta go sit in my new recliner and watch MATRIX: RELOADED

Sorry about the Elin pics for those at work.
I had posted them last night ,so wasn't really thinking of those at the workplace. I just couldn't see myself placing [simg] blocky tags on those ones due to the soft skin.

I've broke one toe for sure, and likely a second. Laid my little toe side ways on a speaker. Oh my go. did that hurt. Pulled it back and yanked it to set it, and taped it. The big toe still talks to me when bent back a bit. That was a bathroom fall. Rug slid out from under me. Man did I hit the deck hard, bad thing was, did a every which way but loose on my toe first, ouch.

Oh, my toe incidents were some time back. My little toe is 99% now, my big one hasn't really bothered me in a long time.
Dad has been doing pretty well the last couple of days though last weekend was rough for him. He's been able to go to work some. Though he's moving very slowly still. Something like this is difficult enough without being his age.
Thanks for asking Trev.

Hey LEX!,
Glad your Dad has ben doing better lately.
I broke my toe when I was young. Kicked my brother in the back as he was running down the stairs. I was chasing him of course. Those were the good old days.
Now my brothers are both bigger than me, so I am the one who would get chased if we were to still do that sort of thing.
