Happy vacation, Eduardo. Heck, I've been on vacation for 3 years now. Well, I do a little consultation work now and then, but not at this time of year.
Do not buy the wife household appliances, guys. BAD MISTAKE. I made that one many moons ago. It ain't fun spending New Years sleeping on the sofa.

No worries george glenda's gifts were a new watch and a new cell phone since our (i.e. her) old one's battery is dead. I should have kept my mouth shut on the watch though as the sales drone calulated the final price to be the cost minus the tax's instead of adding the tax's (first day with new brain I guess) anyway I commented that I didn't notice it was on sale so she caught the mistake and adjusted the price :M
Got a god deal on the phone though as Rogers has some refub phones in on their pay as you go plan which is what we wanted anyway:T Teh rest of the stuff I got her are just odds and ends etc.
What are you guys getting your SO's this year?

Guys, I really appreciate the kind words and well wishes for my family.

Hey, guys. I got Jen a nice new watch since her old one broke.
We're not too sure about Christmas, though, whether we're going to be at home for it, in the hospital, have just the two of us, or whether there will be a third addition. :D

Good Evening Everyone!
Now that I think about it... Lex should definitely be the UPGRADE KING!
Lex got some really nice toys this year.
Angibug and I usually don't exchange gifts as we get pretty much what we want all year long. Come Christmas time we can't ever think of anything in particular that we want. We give up on trying to surprise each other at about the 10 year mark. Of course we are building a dedicated HT and just got our first ever PJ... that's plenty Christmas for both of us. Bug doesn't like to wear a lot of jewelry (not even pierced ears but she does wear a watch and it's fairly new) and she's already bought a bunch of clothes and shoes while Christmas shopping. She gets a huge bonus each year and spends like crazy all during the year.... okay maybe not like crazy... she's a good money manager really. But when she really wants something she will get it or ask me to get it for her (when her slush fund gets low).

Gidday all to the rest stopping here. Isn't it nice to see Tex Meek back posting again. He may have moved from Texas but he's still a Texan. :)
As for gifting at Christmas, wifey and I stopped giving gifts a year ago. After 48 years of Christmas together it got to the point where we just couldn't come up with anything to buy one another. She has her hobbies and I have mine, so we usually just add a little extra to our allowance in December and buy what we want. For us the gift giving is reserved for our family, grandchildren, etc.

Well after a crappy late night last night at work, I have to say today more than makes up for it.
First went to my son's pre-school christmas party and they were a riot. Those kids are all very cute. They sang for us and then we did crafts and there was a lunch...but I didn't stay for the lunch because work was taking out our clients and I got invited. I never turn down a free meal so we went to the Blaze restuarant. I chowed down on a wicked buffet....stuffed myself and finally got into the office by about 1:30. Now it's almost time to go home.
Gotta love the holiday season :T

Based on some of the "art" I've seen (and the price they ask for it), this may be worth the 2 grand on appearance alone.

Oh, here's that phone I told you guys about. After having 2 V-tech phones both with problems, I opted for this Uniden, and picked up a second receiver with base power station. Pretty cool, you just set the second phone in the main cradle for 3 or 4 seconds, and it locks onto the proper frequency.
http://www.uniden.com/images/images300/TRU5885.jpg
Pictured with second satellite receiver:
http://www.uniden.com/images/images300/TRU5885-2.jpg

Andrew, this is my first Uniden. I have two old Motorola flip phones that have served me VERY well. One's in the kitchen, and one my bedroom. The new phone is for my computer area, and the extension just for a spare. I paid a fortune for those motorolas to begin with, like 250 and 300 each, but I guess you get what you pay for. I also have an old Sony with a huge pastic antenna on it, that charges a battery in the base station. I use it for my fax line now. It's also been a good phone.
I tried one Vtech, and about one minute into a conversation, it would make all sorts of static noise to prevent you from talking. I got a second, after a recall, and the dang thing wouldn't even power up, lol. I actually still had the other one and tried the battery in it, and it still wouldn't work.
I got Kimberly a Vtech you can download ringers to for Christmas, we'll see if it works. If it don't, that's it, no more V'techs, I'll get her one like mine if I can get them on separate frequencies.

Guys, I thought since the Body for Life Challenge that I just completed was such a part of my life for 12 weeks, that I'd share the pictures with you just in case you're interested.
DISCLAIMER: I hope you guys don't get grossed out by topless photos of Chris! While the "after" pictures aren't all that bad I think, they're still not where I want to be. I'm rather embarrased by the "before" pictures, though, that I let myself get in that bad of shape.

Back Before: http://www.body-for-life-tracker.com/photos/3043BB.GIF Back After: http://www.body-for-life-tracker.com/photos/3043AB.GIF
The website I posted them on really down-rez'd the pictures to keep the file size small. I didn't want to go any smaller in picture size so that you couldn't even see me.
Like I said, I'm not where I want to be yet, so I began my second 12 week challenge this past Monday. It's going to be a tough one with about to have a baby and everything, but I'm going to give it my all and see if I can improve even more.

You probably increased the efficiency of your jet too Chris, lol. While I am not particularly keen on hairy bare chests, nice job on the liposuction substitute.
It's easy to let oneself go, and for those of us that have a tendency to put on weight, difficult to keep that balance. I should know, the scales have been tipped off balance for a while for me.
I sold my Infinity Kappas today, and my Parasound 1500A amp. Well, provided he sends the money on the second one. I would have just kept it, but I'm out of space here, so some things just have to go. Already been paid for the Kappas. Spent about 3 hours I think packing them up. Without the original boxes it make a tough job. I think I used like 3 rolls of tape, lol. I made reinfored corners for the box, since the overall weight of the cardboard wasn't ideal. I also had to seam 2 boxes together to cover them. What a job.

Andrew,,What size is your screen again and what is your seating distance.?
Here is what we have decided..
Da-Lite HC Cinema Vision (HCCV)
92" Diagnol Permanent Wall Mount Cinema Contour
Originally though, I wanted the 96" size screen.
The recommendations for the 2HD is not to go over
100" for optimun picture quality..This rules out the 106" size..
However the 106" would fit into the room but would likely cover the mains..I would need a perf screen then.
The reason for the wall mount screen is that originally it will be hung in front of the RPTV..We decided eventually , soon down the raod we would mount the screen to the back wall.
The seating distance from the screen mounted in front of the RPTV is 13 feet. When mounted righ tto the wall we will have a distance of 15 feet from the seating area.
Because we will be going right to the wall down the road , the purchase of a perf screen would be useless.
I would like the 106" but 15 feet away , we would likely sacrifice picture quality a great deal.
Just wish they made a 96" size.

Trevor both my current screen and the one E! is using are 92" diagonal. My front row is 10 feet front the screen and the back row is about 14" feet. SDE shouldn't be an issue with the 2HD so sitting 10 -12 feet back would be about perfect for that screen/PJ combo.
As for the pro trim my guess is its just a black velour type fabric around the outside to help kill any light spill around the screen. I have black felt on the top and bottom of my screen and the black curtains help with any light spill on the sides but if your screen is going against a white wall you might consider getting the wider trim (assuming that's what this is)

Thanks Andrew!!
Since I will be eventually 15 feet from the screen,
I wonder if I should go with the 106"
The width of the 106" is 92 " . Multiply that by 2 =184"
or 15'3" which will be the viewing distance.
PS,,I found out what the Pro-Trim is for the Da-Lites.
It's a fabric frame covering that aesthetiacally enhances the appearance of the installation and absorbs light that surrounds the viewing area of the screen. Sounds like a must have,,for the extra $200.
Here is the write up on the screen recomendation from the Projector Central review of the 2HD/ Z2
Screen size and choice
When it comes to screen size, give this some serious thought. There is a perennial trade-off in front projection…everyone loves projectors for their huge images of course, but the larger the image the lower the quality. Any projector can be stretched even up to 15 feet or more diagonal. When you do that you get a dimmer image that is lower in contrast and higher in visible pixelation than you'd have with a smaller image from the same projector. This is always true no matter what projector you choose.
So you have an "image quality vs. image size" decision to make. If we were setting up the Z2, we'd choose an image size of about 100". Actually some screen vendors have a 96" 16:9 diagonal frame as a stock item in their catalogs, and this is ideal. If you want to go somewhat smaller down to 90", you simply end up with an image that is a bit richer and even more beautiful. If you go up to 120", you still end up with a very fine picture. But at this size you will begin to see some loss in contrast, and depending on how close you are sitting, some slight pixelation may become apparent. For these reasons we'd say the optimum solution to the size vs. quality trade-off for this projector is in the range of 96" to 100" diagonal for a 16:9 screen.
As far as screen material goes, we would use a low gain, high contrast (gray) screen with this unit. This is particularly true if you, like most normal folks, do not have a black viewing environment. If you have a white ceiling, light colored walls, carpet, furnishings, etc, you will get reflected light from the environment bouncing back onto the screen. A white screen will in turn reflect this light, and the effect is a somewhat reduced image contrast. A gray screen does not reflect this ambient light nearly as efficiently. Thus it helps maintain better image contrast in a viewing room where reflected or indirect ambient light is present.
Seating area distance tip form Projector central..
As a rule of thumb with XGA or WXGA resolution projectors, a viewing distance of less than 1.5 times the screen width will get you into the trouble zone where pixelation and artifacts become more visibly intrusive. While it is true you have a very BIG image in front of you, these distractions can compromise viewing satisfaction.
On the other hand a viewing distance of 2.0 times the screen width or greater gives you beautiful image integration in which pixelation is invisible, artifacts are minimized, and the picture appears as a solid unified video image.
The range in between these two, that is a viewing distance of between 1.5 to 2.0 times the screen width, is the area where the trade-off happens—the closer you sit, the bigger the screen looks obviously, but the more you begin to see the flaws in the image also. In my personal experience, with XGA or WXGA projectors, a viewing distance of 2.0 times the screen width is the perfect solution, yielding large screen drama with just enough distance to cause the image to be fully integrated and resolved visually. But that is just me. Your preferences may be different than mine. You may want to sit a bit closer and live with a bit more pixelation or artifact noise than I would. Or you may find that an image that is 2.0 times the screen width is still too large for your tastes.
Now these are just rules of thumb. Clearly the projector you choose will have some impact upon ideal viewing ranges. Very high resolution projectors will allow for larger screens and closer viewing distances without compromising image integrity. Alternatively, if you go with a lower resolution SVGA projector, you will need to sit back a bit further to eliminate visible pixelation, scanline artifacts, etc., than you would with a higher resolution machine.

Yeah I caught it:)
So at this point it looks like I could do one of the following
1) sell my Denon 1600 and upgrade to the 2900 universal - this is by far the cheapest option since I've got a buyer lined up for my 1600 already if I wanted to go that route. The pro's are I'd get DVD-A, SACD and decent redbook performance from a single box. Downside is redbook though good likely wouldn't compete with a dedicated CD player.
2) get a Rega Planet 2000. Reviews are generally good with the consensus being its much better then the old planet but still perhaps a little too warm. Resale value should remain strong given the Rega name. Downside is its a top loader which could be more difficult to work with in my rack as it stands now.
3) get the Cary 308 for a little more then the Rega unit. Plus's are its a Cary and even though its their bottom tier unit its still a $$$ unit from a company that knows music. Downside is its really past my budget but its supposed to be very very good.
4) Go ahead and get the Denon 2900 universal and later add a DAC if 2 channel is still lacking.

This will allow me to still use my jukebox as a transport so my existing library will now sound much much better and later I can add a true transport to use the coax input should I find the jukebox not a suitable transport. Though since the A3.24 reclocks the DAC the transport shouldn't matter as much as with some other DAC's.

Good afternoon from the great Northeast, where it looks like it will be a green Christmas and very mild and rainy. Oh, well, that's good for all the family driving which worries me when the weather is bad.
Trevor: I would definitely go with a 106" diagonal screen. That's what I have and I sit roughly between 13 and 14 feet from my screen ( 52 x 92 wide or 106" diag.). My old Sony LCD has fewer pixels than yours and I don't see any screendoor at the distance. The recommended seating distance for projectors is 1.2 to 1.5 times screen width and you are well within that range at 15 feet. The first screen I owned was too small and I regretted it, and eventually went larger. You have a good resolution PJ and you will want to enjoy the BIG picture. I believe some mfgrs recommend smaller screen maximum sizes because a lot of home theaters don't have total light control and the pic then tends to get washed out due to the projectors maximum light output. Now if you don't have total ambient light control, then maybe the smaller pic is the way to go.
Hey, Chris, great AFTER shots there. You can really see the results. I know it's tough going. I used to run until my knees started bothering me at age 50. Now at 67 I walk mornings and evenings ( an hour each), I use my Nordic Track 20 minutes a day 5 days a week ( it simulates cross country skiing) to keep my heart rate up, and I do 20 situps daily, and I am still a little paunchy but certainly not as bad as I'd be if I did nothing, like watching too many movies in my HT. :)

Andrew, do you seek the holy grail of audio? Adding the DAC now vs a true transport is like trying to make a Ferrari out of a Chevrolet. In the end, the parts just don't add up to do so, and it's still a Chevrolet. All be it a fuel injected one.
But as long as you realize the shortcomings of the transport, I suppose it's a good first step.

Lex.... our ISP is having e-mail server problems right now so I'm not sure how long before I can e-mail. I've already had 2 people tell me this morning that they sent me e-mail although I've yet to receive it. Not sure if you actually sent me an e-mail too but either way I haven't gotten any e-mails today because of the server burp. I'll e-mail you as soon as I possibly can.
Trev.... I'm with George and Dean on the larger screen. You can buy the screen material rather cheap and as Andrew had stated before he can walk you through building a frame or for that matter you can cut out a piece of Parklane or MDF to the exact size and attach the screen material over that. By doing this you can order enough material to do the 106" screen and then cut it down if you want smaller. If you order a smaller screen to begin with and want bigger then those screens don't stretch.
Personally I'm painting my entire screen wall the Misty Evening Gray. I will project different size images and see which is best and then build a black frame around the screen edges for the desired size. Then I'll finish the remainder of the screen wall in black. This way I'll get the biggest screen possible with the best image I can live with.

MDF can be pretty heavy though which is why most of us use blakcout cloth stretched over a picture frame design. Even with the 2*6 header and footer my screen is very light weight

Hey Gord, the Pacer was a good car! :) Look at those great kids you got. I'd trade in a minute. :)

I did email you, but I assume you didn't get it.
Here's the gist of it:
Sonnie, is all still go on the "widget"? Can you check an estimated date? Call me curious. :)
Also, I'll need a mailing address for you.
Just call me Sonnie boy. removed. There's no answer machine on that line, so if I am here, I'll answer.
Or you could go sign up for a temp email, Yahoo or such.

I'm with Bing, my system just gets me by but it's the best of my local friends (with the exception Andrew of course). Mind you most of my friends don't have a system at all so that's not saying a whole lot ;)
The Pacer was a good car....heh heh. Well it's the butt of several jokes now. A friend of mine had a pacer about 12 years ago that I bet he'd still drive today if it wasn't totalled by this drunk pilot we knew. The guy was bombed out of his skull (which was pretty much the norm for this guy) and trashed the Pacer with a big rock, and I mean trashed....all windows smashed, the car was dented all to hell and interior destroyed....it was madness. The pilot bought the Pacer for what I hear was probably a record price just to keep the cops and insurance out of it
This guy still flys for Air Canada (no joke), that's the scary part...kind of a big loser with WAY too big a paycheck and ego.
"A RONSTER!"
That is scary from a pilot. They are "supposed to" have a better head on their shoulders than that. I can hear him now when someone cuts him off in the sky.
Why that little no good bast@ard, I'll ram this Boing right up his butt. The heck of it is, with a head on him like that, he just might.

Hi Guys!!
Cool on the new gear Andrew,,If it's a Chevy then I have a Pinto. :P
Also,,Thanks for the christmas card Andrew, Just received it today.
Your Welcome Lex!!:-y
Gordo,,I remember Dragons Liar in the Arcades,,Although I never played it. I was popping my coins in to Asteriods Deluxe at the time. :yesnod:
George and Sonnie..
DONE!! I ordered the Da-Lite HCCV Cinema Contour with Pro-Trim
106" Diagonal (53"x92")
I ordered it last night before going to bed.

Well I'm not gonna say the guys name and no it wasn't either of those guys. That's just one of about 100 stories I could tell about this yo-yo. Some stuff would make you shake your head...some stuff is funny just because it's stranger than fiction. Mostly drunken debauchery type stuff.
Trev, great choice on the screen. Go Big or go home I say ;)
I didn't play Dragon's Lair as much as I liked because it didn't give you as much bang for the buck as say my other favorite game StarWars....remember that one...you flew the x-wing with that cool controller. The game had vector graphics and you made the death star run. That was the ultimate in technology then.
Battle Zone was another classic vector based game.
Man I remember my brother and I saved up enough money to buy StarWars ported to Colecovision and it was a good port too.
(I'm just waiting for Archie and Edith to start singing Those Were the Days in the background ;) )

Well guys...I chatted with my boss last week and asked him about my job status and concern about the "lack of work" over the coming months...and to make a long story short he said: "If I were you Erik, I'd get my feelers out there!" So in short...my thoughts a few months back have come true...I could be out of a job here in the coming weeks/months...and why I started looking and interviewing. So here's to finding a new job or landing a TRUE and REAL offer from that recent interview soon! :D
So if I'm a bit more absent than normal, don't take it personal okay!? Thanks guys! And here's to landing a job...again...or heck keeping the one I have for you never know what might happen! I'm just livin' on faith at this point and doin' my best to find a job and work hard at the one I have!

Gord, I once had a Pacer. Well, I won't say I owned it. Rather, it owned me, lol. I really didn't own it, it was a car off my Dad's lot. The thing is, I wrecked my Datsun 280Z. It wasn't drivable. Front end mashed against the front wheel. My Dad gave me the Pacer to drive until mine was repaired. I suppose making me think about what I had done. It seemed like I drove that car a year, though it was really a little more than a month I think. I referred to the Pacer as my Moon Buggy, lol. Those dang doors too, they'd knock your shins off. The door handles were inset on the doors, so you stood next to it, opened it, and there was like 10" of door behind the handle, lol.
Trevor, you didn't listen to me on the screen. :nono:
Sonnie, a good time to call :phone: is about noonish or so. Don't want to phone to early and wake up my daughter, or me, lol.
Oh and gang, that widget I spoke of to Sonnie back on the last page? To demonstrate one last time that I am the upgrade king this year, I'm upgrading projectors to the Z2 equivilent Studio Experience 2HD, and squeezing it in this year to set the bar a bit high for Trevor next year, He's gonna have to get that Viper to top the all time upgrade year. :rf
I am keeping my ViewSonic though for 4:3 material as well as having a backup PJ.

EDIT: Now I've read 2 messages in a bottle! lol And you finally decided to tell everyone... 8)
Andrew... have you read where several folks are now painting plexiglass for screens? I know the Parklane with no support framing is very popular (painted or unpainted and extremely lightweight).
Gordon... I wouldn't want that fella piloting any plane I'm in. :P I'll take Chris since I feel good about his health and attitude. :D
Trev.... I can't wait to hear what you have to say about your 2HD and the 106" image. If you had to I think you could add more Pro-Trim to make the viewable screen size smaller.

Heheee... the good thing about the pilot profession is that it's self regulating. While you have some mediocre pilots out there or guys that have attitude problems, they never fly alone. Pilots really hold each other accountable for flying right and flying safe. If you get a bad pilot that for some reason isn't weeded out of the profession, he's at the very least kept in line while in the cockpit.
Andrew: Congrats on the new DAC! I'm curious--does that only work with a digital output from a CD player? Or could you also use it with a DVD-V/DVD-A/SACD player?

Yes Parkland plastic is or at least was quite popular. Its now much more expensive though so its not as good a deal as it once was.
The plexiglass screens are an interesting idea. i'm waiting to see how CMRA does with his.

My e-mails from htguide actually weren't that bad since I haven't checked too many of those blocks and I have it set to group them. There were a lot of reply notices in each e-mail especially from the HT construction thread. I thought initially my ISP had been holding them since we've been having e-mail problems. So Mats and our ISP's timing was ironic.
I didn't realize how much I rely on e-mail until yesterday and today. There were a couple of fairly important e-mails that were delayed coming in and going out. A few would slip through and some were held up. The ISP was trying to install a spam filter and it jammed everyone up big time. Once they got the old server back up I got hammered with all those that didn't make it through.
Everything seemed to flow back into place nicely though and I had the fortunate pleasure of actually speaking on the telephone with our captain, Lex. Lex, I must say, it was a real pleasure to speak with you today. It is true that it's nice to put a voice with a face and written words. I'm not sure how many of you have spoken with Lex but I hope you all get a chance to.
I gotta tell you guys... Lex made me feel like he was a good hearted country bumpkin (living in the big city of course). I thuroughly enjoyed our conversation and look forward to speaking with you again and possibly any of you others at some time or another.

Hey all. :later:
There's a lot of you to say hi to,
I hope everyone has a terrific Christmas,
Mrs. Bent and I are having her Dad, Brother and my Mom over for Christmas, the guest room will be full of inlaws Christmas eve.
I have some gifts to wrap in the morning, and I'm hoping my little guy has a good sleep like he did last night. (He slept for 6 hours straight). He is 5 months old on Jan 1st, and he doesn't like me. (I have no :boobies: ), however yesterday Mrs. Bent took my daughter (7) to the RWB (Royal Winnipeg Ballet) to see the Nutcracker and left me with the baby for 8 hours - the longest I've ever spent with him. He and I are friends now. :-y
I'll check on the TTP tommorow a couple of times, Everyone please stay safe and take a second to reflect on the fact that some folks aren't as fortunate as us, maybe wish a stranger a Merry Christmas and toss out a few spare smiles.
All the best to all.

Hey Rick :later:
I would like to share this thought and Christmas wish with my buddies on TTP
I hope you and your family had a wonderful 2003, and wish that the coming years be full of excitement, joy, and pleasure
I would like to pass on a small quote that I had read somewhere recently. This has really worked for me…..and at this time of year we all could use a little…calm!!!
By following the simple advice I have finally found inner peace….the quote read:
“The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you’ve started”
So, I looked around the house to see all the things I started and haven’t finished…..
and before coming to work this morning I finished off a bottle of whiskey, a half case of beer, the Bailey’s, my Tylenol 3’s, some cigarettes, and a box of chocolates
You have no idea how freaking good I feel…………!!!
You may want to try this simple rule by yourself or pass this on to those you feel are in need of
Inner Peace…..
Good Luck and a Happy Holiday Season!!

Looking good Doug...maybe try another colour other then red for the accent though. What about an oval or less square shape for the boarder? It might convey a less "structured" message about your company.
http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
How about this, pictured how it would appear on the site: Like the black or grey cat better?
http://www.catcables.com/doug/cats/new_header.jpg
I worked in a couple of grey stripes in the banner to tie it all together, greys, blacks, maroonish reds)
Ok, at 80% black on the cat for Andrew:
http://www.catcables.com/doug/cats/new_header2.jpg
here's live cat look:
http://www.catcables.com/doug/cats/live_logo.jpg
Also greyed the background on the logo, changed the lettering some.
Lex
This is was the start of the Cat in motion:
http://www.catcables.com/doug/cats/cheetah.jpg
He's a Cheetah. I reversed the cat, stripped the background, greyed him out (a bit time consuming), then did a free transform to change his angle. All in photoshop.

http://www.htguide.com/CFBoards/images/signatures/andrew_sig.jpg (http://www.mts.net/~glendap)
Ok, Andrew, for comparison sake, I saved a second copy only at 80% visibility. alternately, I could change the color of the cat, but this is really about the same effect. He's up above under the other one.

Merry Christmas to all.
Time to go for another Turkey Dinner
Tomorrow is my day: Boxing Day!
Hence my stocking was pretty bare, 'cept for some nice Headphones ;).
Was up till 2 last night getting the house ready for the family this morning. Finally kicked the stragglers out and we're off to another family party.
I was watching the futureshop online boxing day sale last night. That DVD burner for $119 CDN was mighty tempting. Amazing how fast everything went. I decided to do it old school style and fight it out at the stores like every- one else.
Hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas however you celebrate the holiday season. Bon Noel (there's the sum total of French I learned in Grade 12 ).

I took us out of widescreen mode removing enough of the Christmas stuff from Chris's post. sorry Chris. :)
Merry Christmas to you all. The day is over with my daughter. We did Christmas here early, then went to Mom and Dad's. Now she's at her Mom's. So, I'm home alone now on Christmas. Speaking of, I may watch Home Alone tonight.
We got Project Gotham 2 racing for Xbox and Need for Speed 2, (she loves racing games), CDs, a music DVD for her, a new portable phone for her, a couple of shirts, a 100 gift cert for more clothes, and a few other things. I did opt to buy less material stuff for my daughter and me. After all, it's Christmas all year long for me, to much so. My daughter, I opted to give her a rather large check this year in the place of so much stuff. That way, she can do whatever she wants to do with it Save it for a car trade, whatever. I gave her 1000.00 US$. I did give her 5 100.00 bills last year to go on her mag wheels and tires. But she got a lot more other stuff besides that last year.
Talk about lighting up her eyes, lol. She said "Dad, that's the most money anyone's ever given me". Well, directly yes, but her Grandpa actually gave her a lot more with her 2 cars she's had. But I guess that doesn't feel the same way as seeing 3 zeros after a 1 on a check made out to you. :)
Oh, fun. My Mom and Dad traditionally give my Sister and me some money at Christmas, well guess what, my envelope disappeared in the Christmas chaos. I was like, anyone have an envelope for me? A package? Something? lol. After it was all over, we started going through two big trash bags of wrapping paper, not in the first one. What do you know, the second one, we found it, lol. Pretty funny actually after it was all said and done. It was a check, not like one of my family could have robbed me, I was about ready to frisk them though.

Funny story Doug:)
Just got back from visiting glenda's grandpa with my father in law. Nice old guy that has a woodworking shop full of tools in his basement. When he moves out of the house in a year or two (sooner if we had any say in it) I think I'm going to end up with quite a few tools. He has a DeWalt radial arm saw that's green in color that he said he wants to give me and no doubt a few other neat things as well. He used to be in the military in the air force's mechanics so he has a few tools built out of old air craft parts like his lathe and drill press...I've love either of those just on the history alone. He also hand made a lot of the furniture in the house (well he built his house too!) so he's an interesting guy to talk with.

You guys and your holiday gifs. Great stuff. :)
Well, I did it. I went live on the main page only with the newly designed banner. Please give me your take. If it stays, I'll convert the white text in the "Audio", "Video", and "Digital" boxes in the left frame to match the grey in Custom Audio Transmission likely. Or should I leave those white like they are? :)

EJ :T New babies are the best kind of news!
Lex,
Here's my take on the page (I hope you don't think I'm ripping into it).
To me, personally, the site seems busy...but I don't know how to explain it better than that
What's with the word "Open"? The site is open? The web store is open? I didn't get it cause it's hanging out in the middle of the page.
About the side frame, have you tried experimenting by killing that, moving it to a top menu and doing drop downs for you products selection? Checkout etc... It's kind of a 6 of one half....you know the rest.
Red is an extemely punchy and aggressive colour, I think it's use should be limited to highlighting something. Aggressive colours are generally used to draw the eyes attention to something (the way a stop sign does).
I'm not sure if you knew that your frames are movable. You may want to fix them.
I'm just not a fan of blatant frames (scrollbars present). Businesses seem to have this look now which I think is a lot cleaner:
ex: http://www.apc.com/index.cfm
The italics are usually reserved for quotations. They are actually considered hard to read. You've italicised your product lines and I would consider removing them.
In the select product drop down....is there a way to include an underline or spacer between the various series headings (Audio, Digi, Video)? I think it would be easier to read.
Also a background shot of one of your braided cables wouldn't hurt in the front page (maybe watermarked or something). I think a product pic on the front page let's em know what you're all about.
I remember seeing a 7 deadly sins of web page design once and I think it was this or something similar:
http://web.jccc.net/edtech/resources/technotes/webauthor/sins/sin1.htm
Last thing,
This is just my opinion (right or wrong) and I'm trying to help. I really hope I don't offend you. Personally, I hate criticism....I'm never good at taking it myself.
Ah well, everyone's a critic ;)
Nighty night all

Whew Gordon, I can't get that much into nuts and bolts until the day after Christmas. Really, though I'll take your comments into advisement, I was really only looking for comments on the header difference, not the entire site.
Since the site has produced close to 100,000 USD in sales in the last 3 years, I'm not to quick to change everything. :)
Your welcome EJ, that is fantastic news. :) Hey, I'm still a kid, and got a grown kid. Some people let the kid grow out of them, some of us don't. I choose the latter. :)

Well I just returned from Compusmart's boxing day sale with some goodies. I picked up a 256 meg USB 2 memory stick and some blank CDR's that were on sale. I wanted a USB hub that was only $5 but they were all sold out:(

Good Morning Everyone!
Lookin' good Lex! Of course I've never been a fan of frames either, I like mouse-over drop down menus.
Congrats Eduardo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I've read your comments today Gordon, and you do make some valid points. Not that they are "best" in all situations.
My analysis:
1. The Red as you say, is actually maroon. Perhaps I could stand to darken the shade though to avoid the red planet effect, or whatever effect it is. My personal belif is though, I don't really feel that there are colors that are taboo in web design, rather it's more a product of the entire presentation that is important.
2. I am an amature developer, and I guess from that standpoint, my site may always have a somewhat amaturish feel to it, vs a spiffy web pro design. That is unless I someday feel justified to pay for a pro design.
3. I stick with frames because it allows people control on the left, while viewing on the right. That they are movable? Well, likely 99% of people don't even try to move them. Those that do, may be making minor adjustments to fit their screen. a good thing, right?
4. I think your right about product pics. I perhaps should modify the body on the right to give more visuals. Point well taken. I use to have a collage of products pictured, but the products became somewhat out of date, so I removed them.
5. Italics. Well, perhaps so. I don't know why I chose that font, except so they wouldnt' be overpowering as a group, rather more suttle.
Sonnie, sometimes, I detest drop downs. It seems the mouse easily falls off them, and it's annoying to get back to them.
I engineered several navigational features to give people choices on the site. Left frame, drop down right frame, scroll throughs, group selection pages. Good thing? Maybe.

Whew what a day.
Up at 4 am, brother-in-law picked me up at 5 and we boogied over to best buy. We were about 200th or so in line. Apparantly the first guys were there at 11:30 pm the night before. They gave away a mp3 player, a portable cd player and a $500 shopping spree.
The doors opened and we were all inside in about 5 mins.
Found my UPS (with no trouble it's kind of a specialty item anyway) and Mark (my brother-in-law) got his el cheapo $30 no-name DVD players. He picked up 2 for the cottage. They get broken into often so he figured, get one and then have one as a back-up (good plan).
The $16.99 T3's were gone (there were only 10  )
Since we shopped so quickly we were able to beat the rush to the register and were out in of Best Buy at 6:10am 8O Simply amazing.
Then we walked over to FutureShop (BestBuy 2) and picked up my brother's graphic cards. I f'd up and charged them to one bill so I'm gonna have to go back and separate the bills tomorrow so that they can each mail in their rebate
By paying in the department we avoided the 40 person/register lineup and were out in 5 mins. (What's going on? It's never like that...must be lucky today).
I needed a new keyboard because my kids don't understand gentle and Staples had a el-crappo cheapy keyboard on for $10 but they weren't opening till 9 am
So we killed a little time and then wandered over to Computer Boulevard (a local pc wholesaler) http://www.cbit.ca.
Stood in line there and get this for the first 50 in line (provided you spent $15 or more) you got.....
a
free
keyboard (talk about karma)
Well the guy is passing out tickets and this old lady (like 50's) (at a computer sale????) cuts in line and snags a ticket. The guy gets to me and I'm the 50th person :T Mark said didn't want or need one so it wasn't a huge deal but I could tell he was dissapointed :(
Get this, not a bad freebie:
http://www.logitech.com/lang/images/0/824.gif
Picked up a second Seagate 40GB 7200 RPM drive for $59 and got my keyboard (I'm going to pick up a cheap RAID card and RAID 0 it with my other 40 GB Seagate).
That saved me from bothering with Staples and I would say that worked out nicely.
Went to Block Buster and picked up a widescreen T3 for $14.99 and Reloaded for $16.99. Both were in Immaculate shape. Not a scratch.
Got back for Breakfast by about 9:30 am
Pretty good day.
Course now I'm at work, taking care of a few things...yeah ;)
Later guys!

We Canucks know how to maximize our dollar ;)
For a savings of $363 (I'm cheating a little because I'm including the savings on the graphics cards and those are actually paid for by other people so it's more like $200 on several different items...better than a whole days work. You get the point), that's not really a drop in the hat for me. All I had to do was get up early. I'd say that's pretty good value.
Comes with the territory when you live under Hudson's Bay. Manitobans spend more on boxing day than any other province. I was just helping ensure that we maintain that record

You know I think the day after Christmas around here is about like Canada's Boxing Day. Everybody is advertising super specials, etc. I went to wally world and I don't remember ever seeing so many cars and so many people at that place. It was packed. All I needed was some ribbies and I had to wait in line forever.
Angibug also went shopping and supposedly got a bunch of good deals on some clothes. As a fact, just about everybody I know was planning on shopping today for deals.
I can attest that we definitely didn't save any money today... we spent some though. I think spending money to save money is an oxymoron... lol

Really, I think most stores don't discount that much right after Christmas here. Why? Because they don't want people coming in with receipts where they payed X dollars for a shirt or sweater, get that back on trade, and by a shirt or sweater for X dollars - 20 to 50%. They hold prices until end of Jan, then they cut it deep.
Computer stuff and all rarely goes on sale anyway, or games, or CDs, what was I going to save going out? Get Christmas decorations at 50% off. Whoopee. :)
Thanks Trev, it's not all profit, but it's a start. I'm still proud of it though. Not everyone's had a dream and been able to make it a reality, even if only part time. I've done both, and been reasonably successful at it. So, no regrets.

And usually once you enter the hospital in labor they won't let you leave...no matter how long it takes so you want to do as much pre labour at home as you can.

So I got the UPS hooked up and everything plugged in. It's got power to spare to say the least. According to the monitoring software my system is drawing 238 W of power (this thing can take up to 600W of draw) and I can go on battery during a blackout for 22 minutes. More than enough time to save my stuff and shutdown gracefully. It's sort of a set it and forget it device but it will come in handy. UPS's usually do somewhere down the road. Time to watch a movie.

Hey, guys! Another trip to the hospital tonight, another false alarm. So we don't have to keep saying that lovely phrase, I'll shorten it and say that we think Jen's "M.P." broke tonight while we were doing some post-Christmas sales shopping at Target. The baby has really slowed down her movements in the last day or two also, so with the two things combined the docs recommended that she come in. But she's still only about 1.5cm dialated, so we're not quite there yet. I think you're right, though, Andrew, that it very likely could be in the next few days. That would put us pretty close to New Year's!
Eduardo, that's cool. We got Jen a Pfaff embroidery machine a few years ago, and she loves it. Makes embroidered stuff all the time, especially for the new baby. Do you know which model she got?

Nope, middle name is James.
My nic is Bent (somehow it just seems to fit)
I live in a predominntly Menonite comunity, where a large number of the people here speak in what's called "Low German", it is a very informal language that barely resembles true German. I have heard them pronounce my name Bei-ent, which closely matches the handle I have used on the HT forums since finding out about HT.
And yes, I work for (ok, I'm employed by) Manitoba Hydro as a Power Electrician. This loosely translates into a high voltage electrician, I install and maintain high voltage transmision, distribution, and regulation equipment as well as install customer metering equipment. Terrific job, B.T.W. The people in my department are very much like me...

Here's a cut and paste why I'm not going to FP
FP - I've seriously thought of going FP but I have some limitations that prevent me doing it. Screen size will only be limited to no more than 55". Ther are 2 ceiling fans that would need to be moved and a pull down screen will also be needed. This is not dedicated room, its also my office and soon to be play room
The TV should be here on 1/10/04. :dothewave:
http://home.nc.rr.com/ejimenez
I see what you mean EJ, that is rough, a try-purpose room soon. My room is really office, living room, home theater, as well as major through fare for all entrances, exits, and back of house.
Trevor, the problem is, even if I went larger with a motorized screen, my speakers would still be an issue, as it would be close that they were not in the way of the image. As it is now, I have the screen squeezed between them rather tightly. In other words, if your off to the side viewing, you can have a speaker slightly blocking the bottom corner of the image.

Actually Trevor, mine is a bit different, it's a 2.4 G and lays flat by design and is not a game adapter, it's a USB or firewire wireless device just for wireless router interfacing. So, your back to being "The man" with a new upgrade!

Remember!, I don't have to have an upgrade to be The Man! ;)
Anyways,,
This has been the Highlight of our Christmas
so far this year!...AIR HOCKEY...The whole family is having a blast with it.
Santa treated us good.
The FPTV would be another highlight, except we don't have the screen yet.
That will be my project when I get my week off work towards the end of
January.

Ah yes, one for Bing. I knew I forgot people. http://www.100megsfree3.com/fwc493/SmileyDirectory2/Clown.gif
For everyone else: http://www.100megsfree3.com/fwc493/SmileyDirectory6/Hi.gif
My local Good Guys right now has a demo Denon DVD-2900 in silver for $799. I'm so tempted to pick it up, and just slap it on my Good Guys card. But there's rumors that Parasound may announce a Halo DVD player at CES in a few weeks, and I still would love to have the Holy Grail- Denon DVD-5900.
