Good morning from the right coast. Thank goodness our bitter cold snap is finally over. Temperatures are supposed to climb back into the 80s again today.
As everyone can tell from Andrew's post, the shuttle finally launched last night. Unfortunately, it was pretty cloudy last night so we didn't get as good a view of the launch as we usually do. I do love the early evening launch because the setting sun turns the cloud trail a stunningly beautiful orange and red.

Morning All from TGWN!
Kevin, good to hear you got your sub, FINALLY!
I have to say my experiance with Fedex has been quite good (knock, knock on my wood head).
Well the sub will be ready for silicone sealing and if all goes right , I should be able to test it by this weekend... Woo Hoooo!
Got my Rogers shipment yesterday, but had no time to watch due to construction. Actually my entertainment system is quite a dissarray at this point. Wires everywere, equipment where it shouldn't be.... It's actually driving me buggy!
sorry 'bout that :)
Have a great day all!
PS Joey, I know I have seen those, but like Greg, can't recall.

Joey Millison
10-12-2000, 12:45 PM
Lex,
Haven't bought it yet, but I will use that when I do :) Does that help the HTGuide? If so I will start buying all of my DVDs with that, as I shop specifically at Amazon for all of my DVDs (unless I'm going to Best Buy because I want it that day, which is ALWAYS a mistake).
New Best Buy story,
Man, what a bunch of loonies! I call up and ask if they had Jurassic Park and Lost World DTS. And he looks around for a bit and tells me they do. Then he asks if I want just the single DTS VHS tapes or the double pack of VHS DTS tapes. I just hung up at that point and quietly muttered to myself, "THAT's what I get for calling them...I KNOW better than to engage in conversation with a Best Buy employee for ANY reason..."
So I drive over there. I found Jurassic Park DTS DVD, but not Lost World. So I look around, but cannot find it. I sigh to myself as I realize I'm going to have to ask. Realize that mandi's in the car this whole time, and not feeling well, I told her I'd just run it, get them, and run out. That was the intention anyway...
So I stand there trying my best to look confused as I search for an employee. There weren't any to be found, and it felt all too familiar. So I ask a guy who works in electronics as he tries to scurry past me without getting eye contact. "I don't suppose anyone from the DVD section is working today?" I ask with a smirk.
"I'll go find someone," he promises, and runs off to the back.
10 minutes pass, and I'm ready to kill someone. I stop another guy and ask if I can be helped, he tells me to hang on and leaves. Another 5 minutes pass, and I can almost hear Mandi out in the car using my name colorfully with every swear word imaginable. Yes sir, I knew it was going to be a LONG ride home...Compliments of the jokers at Best Buy.
So the manager walks by and asks me if I've found everything okay, and I just stare at him and laugh. "Are you serious? You think for a second that anyone can find anything here unless they know specifically where it is? This place is a joke!" I tell him how long I've been waiting and ALL I want is one DVD, and then I'll be out of their hair so they can go back to not having anything to do.
So I finally get this little 17 year old kid come up and ask me what it is I needed. I tell him, "I am looking for Jurassic Park: Lost World, in DTS *I pointed to the DTS logo on the top of the DVD, and was very tempted to do sign language while I asked him this, as he started to get a blank stare* do you have it?"
So, as they always do, he goes and looks exactly where I had. This wastes another 30 seconds of my time, though it's funny to see him pick up each copy and look on the back. "This one says Dolby Digital, is that what you're looking for?". At this point I almost ask for an application so I can stay in the building and work there, because the second I left I was going to have hell to pay in the car.
He turns around and tells me they don't have it, and I walk off quietly, go pay for the one I did find, and go back to the car. I open the door, and even though I wasn't too pissed at this point (I kind of expected them to be dumb) I acted as though I were fuming. "Damnit, I hate them!!! Why do I bother!!! God they waste my time...I'm, like, PISSED or something!!!" You could tell that Mandi was about to throw a fit, but by seeing me "mad" she realized it wasn't the time, and let me vent. Had she known it was all an act to avoid a fight I'd probably be in big trouble ;) But as far as I see it, I deserve another point for my time for creatively avoiding an argument ;)
Anyhow, that's my story, and you're all better people now having read it ;)

We've got bass! Repeat... we've got BASS! :B
My co-worker HT nut came over to my house and we unboxed and hooked up the SVS. After calibrating it we tried out some DVDs and CDs. The sub is performing admirably despite a nasty 40-50Hz peak in my room which made calibration tricky--depending on the "pitch" of the test tones the sound would be so loud I would end up calibrating the sub too low and lose a lot of the deep bass impact. My first attempt I had the sub set to -15db on my receiver! I did it a second time and it's at -7 now so I have a bit more punch, but ultimately I might have to stick in a parametric EQ or something to get the response flattened out in the 40-60hz range and then I can really let 'er rip.
Some things we demoed: Antz (the sneaker scene), The Matrix (Trinity jumping near the beginning, the lobby shootout, and the rescue/helicopter crash), T2 (beginning and the chase scenes) and the Titanic soundtrack CD (Never an Absolution and Southampton--loads of bass in those tracks!). After I recalibrated I threw in The Iron Giant, where I've gotten the best deep bass impact I've heard so far, near the end of the movie.
One time my friend asked me to place a piece of cardboard (I used a VHS sleeve) on top of the sub to see if it got "blown off" by the air coming out of the port. It vibrated a tiny bit, but due to my room the sub didn't really have to push much air to get lots of bass in my room. The SVS is overkill for my room I guess. I'm curious as to how it'll do with The Haunting. :)
So far so great! :) Tomorrow night will be the first time we watch an entire movie with the sub. I can hardly wait. :)

Andrew wins a $25 GC from Amazon! Congratz, though congratz to all of you who guessed some of those really tough ones as well! Everyone did awesome!
Wanna play again for another GC? We'll do it this way. When you win one you get one point. First person to get three points wins, cool? That should make it more fun, and last a little longer! :) I'll make some of them harder and some easier. Who wants to play? I'll organize it better this time. Do you wanna do it for a GC or for a free DVD? (free DVD would be easier for me, heh, but GC works too!) Lemme know and we'll start tomorrow.
Congratz Andrew!

KJP,
Glad your enjoying the new sub. If you do have the "Haunting" be careful. It will bottom the driver on the sub very hard.
Paul,
Denon has not released the software for the remote yet. So, I've wasted about 25 hr of manual set up time. :( But, the manager at A&B has a new one for me to pick up today. :)
By the time you finish a movie these days you could buy 2 disks for the HT.
Trevor,
I did try the 5800 on its own for a couple of days. But, after hooking up the Cinepro 3k6II I must say that we are really talking about two different leagues here. I am only using the two BSC's from the 5800. I don't know the ratings on the 5800 but, my 4 ohm speakers did get the fans to come on. The Cinepro hardly gets warm.
Andrew,
Congrat's on the win!
Chris,
Take it easy on those "Snow Birds". ;)

I'm checking out a trailer for Driven (http://movies.warnerbros.com/driven/cmp/video-fr.html) Slated to be in theaters in Spring of 2001.
Kind of tough when I have no sound and can only watch a few frames at a time, but over at another list a couple of technical points that don't help; paddle shifting, only in F1, engine revs too high, again like F1. So it sounds like, pun intended, the sound guy got his samples from F1 cars rather than CART cars. But me being a racing fan and a DVD fan, I'm hoping for a nice DVD. :B I hope there's a good ratio of track time verus 'acting' time. ;) Oh, I can just see it, a DD and DTS release, and if the movie is a bomb, the DVD will be out by the summer. :)
Oh also, I find it hilarious that they would even attempt to drive these on the road like in the clip.
I'll add more comments when I can more fully disect the trailer.

Okay I had a chance to at least listen to the trailer. The car sounds are that of an F1 engine. This is a big difference to us audioautophiles. Plus I'm not particularly fond of the music track, and I can just picture race footage with this music in the background to pump up the scene. Me no like. Plus all the crash scenes in the trailer. As a race fan, crashes happen, but that's not why we like racing, but guess what makes it to the evening news sports coverage. I guess I'll have to see how the movie unfolds next year. Maybe on the DVD there will be an effects only track.

Pl@,
At least now you can take advantange of those great senior deals at Denny's ;) You old fart you! :B
Paul, have you see the newest Aibo-wannabe? This one's REALLY close to an Aibo, though it needs a remote to do stuff, which is kind of lame. It's called the I-Cybie. It looks like what would happen if the Taco Bell Dog and Muffet frrom Battlestar Gallactica had sex... I need an Aibo though, now more than ever. My goal is to have one by December! Muhahaha! And everyone knows when I want a new toy I wind up getting it ;) But I will NOT use any form of credit to acquire my Aibo! :)
Pat,
Since you and I are the only ones who know what Cirque Du Soleil is, and because everyone could benefit from seeing them, and it's our job to educate them, I have an idea! The next contest will be for a Quidam DVD! Though if you win you get to pick any DVD of the same value from Amazon.Com. But I think everyone would enjoy it! :) So I'll develope some more rules and what-not and get it going this weekend.
Rick,
Congratz on your full membership-hood!
Tomorrow the day! I received my AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) certificate and can now legally fly my NEW plane! So I have lessons tomorrow with "Fred Damm" at the Clifton Airfield, a place where I will be spending my saturdays now, just relaxing! :) I'm really excited to finally get the chance to fly the Quaker! Andrew, Yikes! that smiley could get me into trouble. Seems like you have a one track mind today.
Joey, first I've heard of another Aibo wanna be. Ah, Muffet, boing, boing, boing. Battlestar Galactica, what a cool movie a big space battle scene to begin the movie and a big space battle scene at the end. What more could you want in a Sci-Fi movie? A Hollywood Square question asked during the Survior appearance. Question to survivour winner Rich Hatch, Who played Apollo in the movie Battlestar Galactica? Rich answers "Why Richard Hatch!" contestant "I disagree!" BUZZ, wrong! Anyway, have fun on your first flight.
This is off another list, I've tried it and it's funny. Should only take about a minute.

Pat,
Unfortunately the only two Cirque Du Soleil discs that I've ever been able to spot are Quidam and Alegria. Though I hope they'll make some more, they're awesome! I was listening to the Quidam soundtrack most of today, great music!
Chris,
Yeah, it's kind of weird though. They made the knew one look like a cat...and yet it still barks...heh, kind of creepy! Can't wait til they make robotic Goldfish ;)
Well, Mandi got me a gift tonight, a really nice digital camera! It's a sony, and does 1600X1200 2.1 Megapixel shots. Not too shabby :) And it has a 32 Meg flash card in it, so we'll have a TON of pictures without having to use the one at work where you have to switch out diskettes! It's a Sony Cybershot DSC-S50. Pretty good resolution and clarity on it! And it does the MPG movies, long ones too, so I'll hopefully have a ton of fottage (gotta teach Mandi to use it though, heh).
NEW GAME!!!
I will be posting a series of sets of 10 DVD screenshots, this time some of them will be my roommate's. So it'll be a total mystery! You get ONE point for guessing all 10 right first...
The first person to 5 points wins a DVD copy of Quidam (anamorphic, DD 5.1 track). If Pat wins, or anyone else who owns Quidam already for that matter, you will win Alegria. If you have both already, you win a DVD of your choice (any DVD same price as Quidam or Alegria, I can't afford to hand out James Bond box sets, heh).
Cool?
I will start tonight, even though some people may not be around...
Gimme a few!

ROUND 1
Alright, game begins now...
Same rules apply...in order to win your post here on the TTP MUST contain all 10 titles correctly...you can basically build off each others' guesses, but the person to post the critical last post wins!
You must win FIVE rounds to win, and the winner will receive a free copy of Cirque Du Soleil's Quidam from Amazon.Com! It's a great film for the entire family family to watch (even if some of my screenshots aren't, heh)!
So good luck, and get guessing!!!

Trev, don't know if they will be travelling. They are doing the demo Oct 13-15. Does one of your A&B's have a high end specialty section? Out here, the highend stuff is all at the downtown store. They carry/reps for:
Adcom, California Audio Labs, Celeste, Citation, Dynaudio, Faroudja, Gallo, Gershman Golden Tube, Golden Theatre, Harmonic Technology Cable, Inouye, Joseph Audio Kimber Kable, Kimber Select, Lovan, Luxman, Magnum Dynalab, Sim Audio Moon.
That was all from their ad, commas are where they placed them, some names I recognize and dropped cause they really aint high end. I think there should be a comma separating Joseph Audio and Kimber Kable.

God, miss TTP for a while, come back and you've excelled 1 billion pages forward since I last dropped in damn it!
I got American Beauty and The Patriot on DVD yesterday. Patriot I got to send Steven Simon off the HTF since I owe him, and he'd kinda like this advance copy.
Steve allowed me to spin the disc though, to test if the new RCE (Region Code Enhancement) thing Sony encoded onto the disc to stop it working on modified multi-region players like mine actually works, and er, it doesn't, mwuahahaha! Never been so happy to see the Columbia DVD intro!
Anyway, to my pure shock I ENJOYED The Patriot, deeming it no more of a factual f*ck up then Braveheart is.
It's an amazing DVD actually, some long drawn out menus, but there is a ton of stuff on it I doubt I will have time to go over before sending the disc to Steve (I WILL be buying my own copy) but still, the image transfers is super and the 5.1, oooooooooh the 5.1 people! Ooooooooh! Lovely mix, astonishing sound!
I've only had a short time to go over American Beauty, but have since watched it in DTS, played the commentary and watched the insightful featurette. Dreamworks have done good again!
Dinosaur FINALLY opened in the UK yesterday, I saw that too at a DLP screening in London and enjoyed the movie, very willing to buy the DVD come Jan 30th. Lacked a lot of plot, was perhaps a little too Land Before Time-esque, but I could not help but be overwheled by some of the visuals...

PS: Wallace and Gromit? Wrong Trousers is my fave... :)

Jehan - Nice flip!
Joey - great looking plane, let us know how the flying goes today!
Dan - long time no hear!
My 5 year old son has a fall carnival at his kindergarten today, will be heading up there in a bit. I'm afraid they think it will be another version of the State Fair of Texas, which it obviously will not. My boys keep telling me they want to ride the big ferris wheel again, and I doubt there are any rides up there. We'll see.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! I have almost got enough points from Freeride so my Toy Story Toybox will be paid with a GC! Should get the rest of the points I need today or tomorrow. :)

Morning All!
Rewired the system last evening, what statisfaction to have that done. Since I started mucking around with different components, the back area was getting kinda rag-tagged.
Got my sub in a usable state, I 'm quite happy with it. No longer does the Lost in Space title flyin cause popping from the low bass region :B
I'll measure it tonight to determine it's response, it sure is a different bass, not a loud but lots more lower stuff. I think basically it's not as boomy as I'm use to. it seems more subtile now. You should sse the box, it looks like a bank safe with all the screws, about 1 every 3-4 inches :) It's hilarious!
Anyway, gotta go, I'm patching and painting Katherine's room....

Hi guys! How's your Saturday going? Mine's going fine. My wife has been out so I did some raking and also some HT fine tuning. :) I finally ran a permanent wire for the center surround speaker so I don't have to drag a wire across the floor to hook it up when watching movies. I also tried out the sub with a few CDs and DVDs--including The Haunting DTS (wow, what bass! Knocked me out of the chair! :)) So, the system is looking and sounding good.
How'd the flight go Joey? That plane doesn't look like the plane you had pictures of before. Wasn't the first plane one with just a wing and a propeller? The new picture looks more like a regular plane.

Joey,
The flying looks like fun!
Just got back from travelling four hours to a snowmobile grass drag. 500ft track / 350ft shut down area! Way too dangerous to stop from 100 MPH in 350ft feet on grass. So, we turned around and drove home. Oh, Well! Better safe than sorry! Still have time to go out and get a disk for tonight.
Talk to ya later!

The Blonde In The Library

A blonde walked up to the front desk of the library and said, "I borrowed a book last week, but it was the most boring I've ever read. There was no story whatsoever, and there were far too many characters!"
The librarian replied, "Oh, you must be the person who took our phone book."

I got to see a sneak showing of "Pay It Forward" today and I must conclude that it's the best film that I've seen in 2000, and I've seen quite a few films this year.
I won't give out details about it (lest I ruin it for some of you), but rest assured, it's one of the best films I've seen in quite some time. I urge you to go see this film at the theaters, it's a worthwhile experience.
Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt both give very good Oscar-worthy performances, but it's Haley Joel Osment who should get his 2nd second Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination in a row. The kid is the real deal.
The story is gripping, the characters are human and they develop along with the story. Mimi Leder does a nice job directing this film.
I urge you to see this movie, especially with someone you love.
Yes, it get a 4 star (out of 4 stars) rating from me.

Hey Gang! Just finished painting one coat of Katherine's room, one more tomorrow!
Measured my sub, and it looks pretty good, except I sure miss that over boosted signal of my energy sub. Seeing all my speakers are now powered by the same type of monoblock amp as the sub (which really sounds clean and clear now), I don't seem to have as much slam in the 30 - 40 Hz range.
Here are the measured numbers:
Reference 85dB, 1 octave Pink noise centered @ 125 Hz Uncorrected
8 Hz 80 dB
16 Hz 90 dB
20 Hz 95 dB
25 Hz 95 dB
32 Hz 95 dB
40 Hz 98 dB
50 Hz 101 dB
65 Hz 97 dB
125 Hz 80 dB
Reference 85dB, 1 octave Pink noise centered @ 125 Hz corrected
8 Hz 100 dB
16 Hz 101.5 dB
20 Hz 100 dB
25 Hz 100 dB
32 Hz 98 dB
40 Hz 100.5 dB
50 Hz 102.5 dB
65 Hz 98.5 dB
125 Hz 81.5 dB
Please, anybody, comment on this and offer suggestions if you see wonky plots, or measurements.

Bing, I wouldn't trust that 8Hz reading. How far away is the SPL meter from the sub? Are these numbers measured 1m away? The numbers looks pretty flat, but I'm having some problems with at 8Hz reading. :D I can't imagine any sub that's that flat down to 8Hz. Hee hee.

Yeah, those are my thoughts as well, that's why I question the corrected value thing....
The measurement was 1 meter away, on plane to the middle of the driver cone. It was frightening at the 16 Hz and 20 Hz measurement. I thought the pictures were going to fall off the wall and that the ceiling was going to collapse, I swear, all walls were shaking, double :E :E
So then Pat, Have I been listening to over emphasized bass, and this is now the real Mcoy?

Well the 8 Hz uncorrected was 80 dB, so it's the correction factor of 20 that is making it look flat. At 8 Hz, the driver was moving in and out to (most likely) maximum excursion at this really slow rate.
At 16 Hz, It was like you said Andrew, not really a sound except for the frame work of the house vibrating and shaking, that was pretty satisfying :B but scary!

Howdy guys,
Nice flip there Andrew.
Bing, those figures seem pretty incredible. One of these days I'd like to experience the sensation of low freq.
I bought JP and LW on the weekend, guess where, Superstore. Not sure how far east these guys go, but they are part of the Weston's empire, who also own, Loblaws, basically it's a big supermarket. I picked it up in the demo section, hoping to get it for $14.77, but no luck so I settled for $18.98. :) The demo only mean that the case was used for display only, but I asked to inspect the disc. This is about where I had a heart attack. The counter person, takes off the anti-theft case and pops open the case. Okay so far. The case looked like the ususal amary case, but the centre spindal was differnt, it was one I've never seen before. It was bascially like an enlarged version of the cd case centre spindals. Well the counter person proceeds to lift up on one edge the dvd and starts to bend it! :E I quickly yell, "Stop, Don't do that!" And take the matters into my own hands. She had the nerve to tell me, "That's the way you're supposed to take them out." Yeah right, well I eventually get them out to inspect for scratches. Everything A OK. So I'll be putting these into my rack. :)

Bing, glad to hear you have a working sub again:)
You might miss the "boomyness" of your old sub for a little while, but then you will grow to love the effortless low end that a good sub can reproduce. After that you will cringe when you hear "bloated bass"...because you know it isn't supposed to sound like that.

Bing Pats right about missing the bloated sub sound...you'll soon come to love the subtle sound your new sub gives you and hate the one note boom that most subs give you. Ideally your bass should sound like the sound you get from two speakers that image really well. By that I mean when speakers are imaging well you hear the sound coming from the front in a deep wide soundstage not the two front speakers. Proper bass is like that as well in that it should be all around you and not just coming from the black box in the corner. When everything is tuned properly it should be a seemless match with music enveloping you and not a few point sources blaring noise at you:)

Howdy all! Just got back from my lunch break (and getting soaked in the process). I went to the local music gear store (Daddy's) and picked up a new toy... a Behringer Feedback Destroyer Pro, the gadget some folks have been using as a subwoofer parametric EQ to tame room peaks. Once I hitch this baby up and tweak the heck out of it I hope to get a reasonably flat response from my SVS taking into account the acoustics of my room. In other words, no more 45 hz boom boom. :)
So how's everyone else doing today?

One way is to order directly through Sony on the Aibo Website, the other is to locate a 'Sharper Image' store nearby (you can search for one on the Aibo site as well). They go on sale November 12th...and will sell out quickly. Last batch of Aibo robots sold out within 20 minutes flat. I'm going to call about 10 minutes before the Sharper Image store in Denver calls, and let it ring until they open ;) And even then, they won't be actually in the store until December 5th. You can bet your but I'm going to be down there before the store opens that day. Then I have one hour of torture to endure, as the store is an hour away. I gotta drive back, with Aibo in car, and not be able to play with it. Man, it's going to be hell, heh.
At Sharper Image the Aibo goes for $1590.00, plus tax. I think it goes for an even $1,500 at the web site, but I'm not sure what the delivery date is...I'm going to call and find out.

One of the main reasons we want a house in the worst way is that as soon as we move we get out dog back from my inlaws. She's starting to give my father in law allergies too so the pressure's on us to move as soon as we can.

Pl@, since I have the consolidation loan I have more money per month. I have enough to make double the minimum payment amount still, so it's no biggie :) Everything will be just groovy! :)

Paul,
Funny you should say that. My english teacher sent me email after I called her earlier today asking about my grade. This paper is worth 1/3 of my grade, and here's what she said about it:
Hi, Joey! I'm sorry; I did have your paper graded. You received an A on it.
Regards,
Bonnie
This makes me happy, as I was worried about this paper. We're graded on two of three papers, this is one of them. We'll be able to drop whichever paper we want though, and be graded on the two we choose. This means I have two chances to get one more 'A', and if I do, I'll have an 'A' as my final grade :)

I may need a dogsitter though ;) When I come up to Canada (sorry, now it's an issue of getting time away from school, soon though, I promise to visit) I'll bring it with me ;)

I finished studying, and am fairly certain I will ace this test. And what theories/formulas I didn't memorize I stored in my calculator ;) We can't use our notes or books, but she told me in confidence that if we were smart enough to store everything in our calculator without help then we could use that. heh heh, so I have permission even ;)

Actually I had one of those graphing calcs during my first year at college. So I could actually store a couple of forumlas, but unfortunately it didn't hold that much. :( Not like kids these days with megs of storage. Hey, this Palm Pilot is my calc, see the numbers. :) Damn, you might as well bring in one of the Win CE platforms. Yeah, this is my calc, a Compaq.
I'll send some absolute positive thoughts. Would you like the natural log or would base 10 be okay?

Bing those two M3's look really really sweet. How are you going to finish the sub? The first sub I built looked a lot like that monster..but on a smaller scale. I used pine wainscotting to cover it since it was easy, moldings were easy to find to cover up nails and the pine was easy to stain. IMO it looked really sharp when it was finished

Bing nice job!... those amps do look great. You might want to hold off on the preamp for a while till things settle down however (or at least till something with DPL II is out - or just buy a Lex :)).
After a few problems with my new Scream 2 disc from the box set I managed to get it to play after some tinkering.. nice to see a new transfer for the film but alas leaving #1 the same was a crime!. Oh well. Going to fire off that Leon DVD to buy tommorrow (Pat did they send you a return label link btw?) and hope they send me a new one. Paul - great running start on that flip!
Watched True Lies this weekend from Netflix, about 3/4 of the way through heavy pixelation on a certain scene. Went back and started the chapter over, same spot, same thing. Took disc out, and there was a nice scratch that I didn't see when I put it in in semi-darkness. That is almost as bad as VHS getting off track back in the day.
Sunday it rained almost an inch here, very nice! Forgot what that stuff looked like! ;)
Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Hi all from Cold Hampshire... we had the woodstove going last night. It's too soon!! I'm still waiting for summer to arrive... :(
I hooked up the BFD last night, what a cool toy. It meets the qualifications of a cool toy--lots of buttons, digital displays, and lights! :) And an owners manual translated from German--a computer geek's dream. :) Heck, it even has MIDI jacks on back--not that I'll have any use for that, but I could control it from my PC that way. :) I spent most of the evening tweaking the thing, and managed to level off a big 50hz hump in my room, and a smaller one at around 45hz, though it still needs some work. The sub sounds great now that it isn't being drowned out by room resonances at 50hz.
For those who don't know what a BFD does, think of it as a 12-band parametric equalizer for $160. What a deal. Plus it's all digital, so you can store multiple presets in it and bring one up with a spin of the dial. I was lucky to find one in stock so close by.
It was fascinating watching the Avia frequency sweeps on the SPL meter--as the frequency dropped down toward 20 hz I could barely hear a thing but the meter stayed around 75-78 db. I guess the sub has a flatter response than my ears. :)
The Aibo sounds like a neat toy, not that I'd spend $1500 for a robotic dog. I bet the price will drop in 6 months. I wonder what my three cats would think of it. :)
See ya... KJP

Good morning from the sunny right coast where today's high will be in the mid-80s. Ahhhhhh.
Joey: Congrats on those English grades - way to go!! Now get after that math!!
Paul: I assume that "in your day," you also walked to school, barefoot, uphill (both ways), 10 miles, in the snow. I know I certainly did. I laughed just thinking about those programmable calculators. All those operations management and statistics classes would have been a lot tougher without my trusty HP19B.
Bing: Two M3s. Sweet!
Question for the group:
You are standing in the middle of an endless plane (i.e., the ground is flat - you know, like Kansas). You have a bullet in one hand and a handgun in the other. Holding the gun perfectly horizontal, you drop the bullet and fire the gun at the exact same time. Which bullet will strike the ground first?

Good morning everybody!
Chris: is that a trick question? The bullet dropped travels at 9.81 mps to the ground. So my next question would be: what is the exiting velocity of the bullet? Then figure rate of deceleration ???? Or is it more like, if absolutely flat, then gravity effect and the bullet will go on forever???
I did some serious shopping yesterday. I bought a Pronto (AGAIN). They are down to $239! I also bought another home computer. Andrew convinced me to get a Dell. It is a refurb. It is a p3 750, 10 GIG hd, 128 RAM, cd ROM, cdrw, 16 MG of video, SB 64 audio, 17" monitor and a "free" printer. All for $1229. Not sure if I got a great deal, but at least it is well warrantied. My last computer (a laptop) had many problems during the 2 years that I owned it. The Dell included onsite repair.
Have a great day!

The dropped bullet starts falling immediately. The fired bullet won't start dropping until it exits the gun barrel, a fraction of a second later.
And you thought they'd both hit the ground at exactly the same time! Also, the airflow over the fired bullet might slow down its rate of descent a tad (unless this experiment is performed in a vacuum). :)
Nice PC there Gregg. At first I was wondering about the deal you got, but when I saw it included the monitor, that's a pretty good deal. I got a brand new Micron P3/800 for $1300 at Best Buy a couple of months ago, but with a 30 GB hard drive and without a monitor (since I already had one).
How come you bought another Pronto? "His" and "Hers" Prontos?? :)

Rick, dips are hard to compensate for unless you buy some expensive esoteric gear using DSP that will do real time analyzation and create the "anti-transfer functions" that will fill in the gaps. But humps are easier to tame.

Here it is again so you don't have to scroll:The dropped bullet will strike the ground first. Why?? The dropped bullet starts falling immediately. The fired bullet won't start dropping until it exits the gun barrel, a fraction of a second later. So, the dropped bullet will always land first. :)
Small dips should be just as easy to tame as humps. Large dips could cause clipping or driver bottoming though if you attempt to boost them.

Andrew, sorry to hear about the toy delay :( Speaking of, Doesn't the Toy box get released today? Must not have other wise i would have heard somebody saying they got theirs...
Thanks for all your comments on my sub and rack (equipment :B ) guys! Now if I can swing one of those Behringer units....
Greg, I hope you dragged out the rain barrel to collect for a rai.. dry day? :W
Serious Questions:
What are all the discrete positions in a 7.1 system?
Why do I want to wait for DPL 2?

Bing, yes the Ultimate Toy Box was supposed to be out today, but most Canadian places won't be getting it unitl later this week. The 2 disc movie only version should be available.

The 3 disc toy story set and the 2 disc set were released today. It appears though that us canucks have to wait for the 3 disc set until later this week or early next. The 2 disc set is available everywhere.
7.1 is two additional speakers on the sides like Lexicons 7.1. 6.1 adds one or two rear centre channel speakers. Pro logic II takes a 2 channel mix like pro logic encoded material and tries to emulate a 5.1 mix ie with stereo surrounds. From all accounts it some how manages to do this very well. Since most TV, LD. VCR and satalite etc is all pro logic PLII has a lot of material to work with.

Got the confirmation email this morning, the Toy Story DVD's are on the way, shipped yesterday. Why pre-order when I could pick them up today at the local B&M?? Oh well, still can't wait for Buzz and Woody to arrive at the Stone household! :)
Nice flip postmaster!
Bing - yep, I enjoyed the rain while it lasted, and it spooked my dog into hiding in her house for a bit. :)
Joey - test results yet??
Lex - soooo close! :D

So then a 7.1 doesn't have a center surround?
It's funny how clueless us HT guys are... I walk into my local Family Video (was in the area) and look around. No Toy Story even though they have a Big display "Coming Oct 17th". I ask, "was not Toy Story 2 release today?" "Yes" he sez, "we have lots of copies right there" as he points toward the VHS's...doohhh! How soon we forget :) "Don't you have it on DVD?" I ask, "Naw, I don't think it was released yet on DVD" he states....
Buhbye....

Bing, go read a reply to your post in the Chalet, or as Andrew calls it, the "Chapel", lol. (kidding) private joke.
Well, in my opinion, DPL 2 is just something to entertain the entry level receiver folks with their stinkin VCRs. I mean, I got my choice of DD, DTS, and DPL2, um yeah, gimme the new one, that DPL2 stuff, lol.
Sorry, in a 5.1 DVD world, I am missing the point, except for DPL television broadcasts. Big deal, right?

I don't agree with that lex. Unfortunatly its going to be a long time before 5.1 digital sources are more common then just DVD and the odd station on the dish. For not most sources are in pro logic esp for the average joey so I can see a huge demand for PLII. I know I'd love to have it on my receiver.

Good evening Gentlemen.
Good to be me today!.:)
Anyways,,,Bing you can get the Toybox at Wal-Mart,thats the 2 Disc set. Picked mine up today.
Andrew,,Can't really see the Prologic II being that great,,I bet my NAD E.A.R.S. sounds better,,Bad luck with your speakers,,really hate when things like that happen. PS..Thanks for the heads up E-mail on the amp.
Gregg,,Dell is the way to go..I have had my PII 266 for 3 years now and it's still running great.Fast enough to load up the TTP thread really quick,,even when things are gummed up. BTW,,if you can upgrade the monitor to the 21", I would highly recommend it.
Bing ,I will have to check out your sub..That rack looks identical to mine,,Harvey sell it to you?
Good night.

Good morning from the sunny right coast - today's high - 85.
I'll have to give you guys credit - you're smarter than the average bear! :)
The answer I was looking for: the bullets will strike the ground at the same time. Although Kevin is technically correct that there will be a delay introduced due to the time the bullet takes to exit the gun, that time is so short it is virtually undetectable. Gregg, the bullet's exit velocity is irrelevant. The key scientific principal here is that gravity and horizontal velocity are totally independent. Aerodynamics are similarly irrelevant because the impact of any aerodynamic flow will be the same for both bullets.
Here's another one:
A B1 bomber is flying due north at exactly 600 miles per hour. It drops a bomb. Assume the bomb has no independent source of velocity. Also, for simplicity, ignore any aerodynamic properties of the bomb. Question: Relative to the bomb, where will be plane be when the bomb hits the ground?

Ignoring aerodynamic properties of the bomb, the plane will be directly over the bomb when it hits. Both the bomb and the plane are traveling at 600 mph and the bomb's inertia will keep it traveling forward at 600 mph until it hits the ground.
Of course, that assumes that the plane doesn't change direction or velocity after it releases the bomb.
In reality, the bomb will be behind the plane since aerodynamic drag would slow the bomb's forward momentum down.
I bet it's tricky aiming a bomb at a target while flying over it at 600 mph. :)

It's time for 80s tunes again... :) I got "The Best of Billy Squier-16 Strokes" CD a week or so ago and finally got around to tossing it into the Sony. Wow, I haven't heard these tracks in years... talk about bringing back memories. :) The Stroke, In The Dark, My Kinda Lover, Everybody Wants You, and more.
If you "came of age" in the 80s, like I did, this CD is a must have.
Joey--what are you waiting for? I can't see Jehan's pic due to my stealth proxy.
