Paul,
That's a cool story, it was hilarious to read. I guess it's funny because I was leaving for school yesterday and on the way we passed up the UPS truck on the way out. And, as you may have guessed, I turned the car around and watched to see which building he went to, and didn't leave until I was positive that he wasn't going to my building. Heh, I almost made us late for class for a damn remote ;) It's good to hear I'm not the only one who would go to drastic lengths to make sure he was getting a delivery...heh heh. We're all a bunch of weirdos, aren't we? ;)

Kevin,
Thanks for the soldering tips. Believe it or not I had this thing in the palm of my hand and without thinking almost started to solder until common sense kicked in (plus I had JUST woken up). Then I put it into the clip thing we have and did it correctly. The whole thing was a disaster though, but my charger works, even though cables are exposed and I could literally shock the hell out of myself if I move my arm a foot to the left. But I'm J6P, and nothing stands in the way of me and my fun ;)
Have you not seen the movie Heathers yet? If not you definitely have to! It's a classic dark comedy, more dark than comedy really, but it's one of my favorites!

My math professor asked me to bring in my remote tonight ;) Her husband, an engineer, is heavily into home theater, but she says he's not as hardcore as I am, whatever that means. She smirked when she said it so I'm sure it means he has common sense and is practical (a word I hate)when it comes to picking out HT gear. I stayed late on Monday to talk to her about DVDs. Oh yes, if you can't get an 'A' on your own you can always butter the teacher up ;) Actually, I just think she's a pretty cool professor on a whole, even if she's always saying "Can someone BESIDES Joey please give me the answer?" (I'm always volunteering and raising my hand and what-not)

Off to check UPS' website again...1Z88A09V1240552192 is the tracking number in case anyone wants to play my silly little game ;)

Hi folks, sorry I haven't checked in. I've been too busy talking politics over on DVDTalk for most of the day, but since most live above the 48th parallel, I didn't think most would care about the debate last night.

J6P, you're like a big HT puppy!

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!

Watching J6P's Pronto travel across the country is like watching a road race on TV, and the winner is on the final stretch for the finish line, and we're going "Go, Pronto! Go!" :)

Of course, for the sake of Joey's sanity, the Pronto better arrive pronto! :)

On a totally different subject (to get J6P's mind off his traveling Pronto for about 5 seconds)... as I mentioned in an earlier post this week is the 14 year anniversary of my largest infatuation. In "celebration" (?) of this, I gathered up all my CDs that had songs I listened to back then (particularly the ones I used for sanity recovery, which I needed a lot of as this crush was a doozie) and burned a compilation CD with all those songs on it. Hey, I'll use any pathetic excuse I can come up with to make a CD with songs from the 80s on it. Besides, this infatuation was one of those major "life changing" events and I don't want to entrust it to my aging, somewhat unreliable and failing random deleting memory. ;) Anyhow, the CD came out pretty good; I think there was a glitch on one or two songs, I have to listen to it again, I might have to re-rip a couple of tracks and burn another CD, I don't want defects in my compilation CD inspired by life-changing events in my distant and jaded past. :)

This crush took place in late 1986/early 1987. Once I'm done with this CD (I might make a volume 2 as well), I'll make another compilation from the period of my first-ever crush, in 1983, which will really be fun because there was a TON of great tunes in 82-83. I might get 3 CDs out of that one. :)

(It's nice to have a CD burner on my desktop) :)

Hey Joey... I got your Yahoo Greetings email. I'll have to look at it at home since my stealth proxy reduces it to plain text so it's basically worthless until I get home (though I could turn off the stealth temporarily, I'm too lazy to do it :)).

Has your Pronto been delivered yet?

I take it Joey is on his way home then. :) He's probably cursing every red light and slowpoke idiot driver in front of him.

One shall not keep J6P from his Pronto... :)

So far, two out of 12 tracks have glitches. 5 more tracks to listen to, and tomorrow I'll re-rip the glitched ones and burn another CD. Heck, I might even throw on one more track because I picked up some 80 minute CD-Rs at Best Buy (along with a $9.99 copy of Blazing Saddles). :)

You know it's funny. If you look at the times, and I'm wondering if those times are EST for drop off, if so, I'd say the pronto was there this morning. Not that Joey would want to hear that, heh, heh You know that UPS truck you passed on your way to work this morning? That was the truck that had yor pronto.

Oh, that 86/87 was a big crush year for me as well. And to tie this in with math class. The object of my infatuation was in the same math class, and physics class in the last term. So I worked doublely hard to be smart and know what I was talking about. Always willing to help. :) Well here's another tidbit, I found out we had the same birthday as well. Man I'm thinking that's total karma man. Got up the nerve to ask her to the big grad Xmas dance. She said yes so I was like walking on air, there's only one other time that has happened. Well that was about as good as it got. Didn't really go out on any other dates or stuff like that. She was pretty much set on a carreer in the air force. Oh and her little comment in my year book went something like "Life's not all about doing well in school" Oh and to cap it off, about 3 years later I saw here in the paper as a dance instructor that was round about the Labada craze.

DanB,
Speaking of the dancing, the Oly closing ceremonies, that was like 5 pages ago, anyway, I saw the dance stuff and man that looked totally lame. And what I have heard is that the camera work did no justice to what was actually being performed. Personally I would have just left the camera on the platform as that's where all the better dancers were doing their great moves. I'm a fan of ballroom dance and I was totally disappointed on what was shown. Apparently NBC did an even worse job.

If we don't hear from Joey for a while, we know what he's doing!! :)

Paul, we seem to have similar life stories when it comes to crushes. :) My object of desire (Dina) was in an accounting class, so there's math involved there too. :) It's interesting, I was listening to the CD I made, and when I came to this one song which was the "anthem" of this crush (Journey's "Happy To Give" from their Raised on Radio CD), it still brings back those memories and feelings from 14 years ago. It was definitely a life changing event. It's funny that I never had the nerve to speak to her.

In addition to making the CD, I wrote up a document explaining the significance of each and every track on the CD. That way if I ever hit my head and completely forget about this event, I'll have something to jog my memory. :) If I ever decide to distribute this CD (or CDs--I might do a Volume II) to the TTP crowd, I'll include the document in the liner notes. ;)

Nice flip Pat!

Just got back to work from the dentist, hadn't been on the internet today, so thought I would pop on before heading home in a bit. Had to get a cavity filled, I hate that feeling that your mouth is not really there, and your lip is so numb you can't even drink from a cup without spilling it on your shirt. Not fun stuff.

Great news J6P with the Pronto arriving! Have fun tonight!

Ok, back to work to finish up. :(

Hey Kids,
Sorry to dash off like that. I hit refresh and it said it was delivered. I stood really quickly and my chair went flying, knocking a few computers over, heh. Oops. So I picked up the mess and FLEW home. And you were right, I was cursing every light ;) I even passed up a UPS van on the way home, heh.
The box was absolutely trashed, but the Pronto is okay! I proceeded to put the batteries in wrong, which was rather clever of me. But sure enough I got everything loaded from my computer and started to play with it. Man it's cool! Then I guess I was overly excited, because I laid down for a second and wound up falling asleep for a few hours. I guess I spent a lot of energy speeding home ;)
Man it's neat though! I gotta tweak my CCF a bit now that I see it, but it shouldn't be too bad. Plus it's fun!
I'm going to need some help with programming some of the aliases...so I'll be bugging you guys for that ;)
Absolutely fun stuff!

Oh, and my free copy of Nightmare Before Christmas Special Edition arrived today! It's AWESOME :) What a pleasant day!

Gotta get to class, I forgot to do my homework, heh. But it's not due, so there's no biggie there :)

Well, thought I'd post one more before I hit the sack. I have my co-worker's Pronto almost done, just have to do the Dish Network piece. It'll be nice when it's finished, that is, if the macros work. :) I can't really test them out too well here because I don't have the same gear she does (except for the Outlaw 1050). I know the macros set the proper inputs on the Outlaw at least :)

Not too much more to say about the Dina crush CD (aka DKC-86, yes I actually assigned IDs to my crushes, heh, yes I've always been a geek), at least until tomorrow when I redo it. I have to re-rip two tracks. I also made a MD of the CD yesterday for the car and it's got dropouts, including one right smack in the middle of Happy To Give. Ugh.. I'll never buy HiSpace MDs again. Maybe I'll try the Sony ones next time.

Morning all... I'm not awake yet. Feels like it should be Friday by now... it's been a slow week (hence the large # of worthless posts by yours truly).

How's the Pronto working out Joey? Have you run down the batteries yet? :) I'm just about done with my co-worker's Pronto, one more night of adding Dish Network to it and then Friday night we go to her house to hook up her gear and have some fun with it. :)

Andrew--that CD changer is cool. I played with my co-workers one for a night when I was doing her Pronto. I don't really need one since I don't listen to CDs much at home. I listen to them more at work... wouldn't it be funny to have a 300-disc CD changer on my desk at work, connected to a pair of headphones? Too bad the CDP-CX335 doesn't have a headphone jack. :)

My MD copy of my DKC-86 compilation CD is toast, drop outs all over the place. I'm going to burn another CD today with a couple of fixed tracks and then the old CD is going in the car changer (the glitches are minor, I won't notice in the car.). This is at least the second bad MD in a pack of 40 so far... remind me to get another brand next time.

Good morning from the right coast. The rain clouds have actually cleared out a bit so we might get to see the shuttle launch tonight after all. Another of the many perks to living here is that we can sit in the back yard and watch the shuttle take off.

Joey: Congrats on the new toy. Let the programming begin!

Bing: The temperature here is supposed to plunge into the 60s Saturday night. Should I winterize my car? :)

Greg: 10 EST is 9 CST, not 11 CST

Thanks Chris. The novocain from the dentist must have numbed my brain on time zone conversions last night! I was in bed by 8:15 CST anyway, so I still would have missed it. Wish I could see the shuttle take off, bet that is one cool site!

Here's a quick joke:
SPAGHETTI

A doctor was having an affair with his nurse. Shortly afterward, she told him she was pregnant. Not wanting his wife to know, he gave the
nurse a sum of money and asked her to go to Italy and have the baby there.

"But how will I let you know the baby is born?" she asked.

He replied, "Just send me a postcard and write 'spaghetti' on the back.
I'll take care of expenses."

Not knowing what else to do, the nurse took the money and flew to Italy.

Six months went by and then one day the doctor's wife called him at the office and said "Dear, you received a very strange postcard in the mail
today from Europe, and I don't understand what it means."

The doctor said, "Just wait until I get home and I will explain it to you."

Later that evening the doctor came home, read the postcard, fell to the floor with a heart attack. Paramedics rushed him to the ER. The lead
medic stayed back to comfort the wife. He asked what trauma had precipitated the cardiac arrest.

So the wife picked up the card and read, "Spaghetti, spaghetti,
spaghetti, spaghetti; two with meatballs, two without." :)

"I had an old friend over for dinner" last night and while shooting the breeze, he drops the bomb on me: he's sterile. He and his wife have been trying to have kids, and they finally had him tested and it turns out he has no sperm motility, and his sperm count was nil. What do you say to someone who tells you this? Well, he's now known this for over half a year, so he's okay with it, but that threw me for a loop!

They've been exploring sperm donors/artificial insemination, adoption, and in vitro fertilization options. They've ruled out in vitro since it cost $10k per attempt (one of their friends needed 3 attemps for the wife to get pregnant, but when she did, she wound up with triplets!). And adoption isn't as palatable because they want to birth the child and raise it from the get-go, so it seems they will go the sperm donation route. He told me that he's got an extra Y-chromosome and very low testosterone, thus not too aggressive or hairy. :D

So, I'm still weirded out by all of this for some strange reason. I think it's coming to grips with not having the opportunity to pass on the family genes due to genetics. But he and his wife are still "trying" the old fashion method...just in case. :D

Pl@--it's a shame that some people who want and are willing to raise their kids right can't have them, while worthless idiots are breeding left and right. As for me, I'm never having kids. My parents did the foster care thing when I lived at home and I became permanently burned out on the little rugrats. I have zero parental instincts left. Besides, I'd rather spend my money on HT gear than kids college funds. :)

Paul--hope your eyesight is getting better. If I could do HTML here I'd post in a big font, but I don't think it works on this forum. :)

My "remastered" DKC-86 CD sounds great. It's jarring some memories big time though, so if I start flaking out, that's why. Flashbacks to October 1986 when I was flaking out BIG TIME. ;)

MalL_FFf_UnCTioN... nEEEd iNPuT...

While on the topic of my jaded past and my DKC-86 infatuation and foster kids, the reason I couldn't ask her out (besides the fact that I was chicken!) was because I was living in a house full of foster care brats. They were more effective than a cold shower at turning me off completely. :)

Ahh, eyesight returning to normal. I can now change my fonts back to small and the text size in IE back to small. To read some of my email, I cut and paste the body into word and blew it up to 30pt. :)

I bet Joey's at home programing like crazy. He did mention that he had a bunch of vacation time left.

Oh yes, now I'm playing with power...
Almost one set of batteries later I'm getting near HT bliss!
I was up until 1AM (bedtime is usually 10:30PM) farting around with this thing. I scaled down a lot of the keys I had in there, as I never use things like the "art" button on my LD player.
I can't get a macro to work though. I tried to make it so that my "set timer" button would do this:
Timer on TV
the number 9 on TV
Timer on TV

First it went too fast, so I added a 1 second pause in between each command, but it only does the first timer command, and then nothing else...so I just get my flashing timer display on my TV, and nothing else...

Anyone know what the heck I'm doing wrong? Also, how do you hide a page completely from not being seen, or can you? Like if you have two commands on a panel, and you want to access those commnds, but don't want to see the panel, how would you do that? :)
I'm actually at work today, trying to get all of my work done so I can finish my Pronto ;)

Life is good...

But the weather is crappy, which means I may now be able to fly on Saturday :(

Like I've been saying since way back. I've been archiving the TTP starting from Chapter 3. If you have a week to read through old threads, give this a try and let me know how it works.

Goto http://www.idrive.com/pwu888

This will take you to a visitors page on my idrive account. You'll see some page descriptions. But go click on the 'Storage' button and that will take you to a directory structure with TTP 3-7. Then you can go to each chapter and page.

This should bring up the actual page with all the pics and stuff. I'm sure there's more neat things I could do with this, but I haven't spent much time exploring.

Timer on TV
First it went too fast, so I added a 1 second pause in between each command, but it only does the first timer command, and then nothing else...so I just get my flashing timer display on my TV, and nothing else...I assume you did this by creating a macro (assigning actions to the button in ProntoEdit, where basically every button is a macro) with an alias to the timer button, a delay, an alias to the 9 button, a delay, and an alias to the timer button, right? Does it work when you do it "manually", by pressing timer, 9, timer?

...how do you hide a page completely from not being seen, or can you? Like if you have two commands on a panel, and you want to access those commnds, but don't want to see the panel, how would you do that? You can set a page to "hidden" in ProntoEdit, by right clicking on the page and selecting Is Hidden on the menu. The page name will then show up in [ brackets ]. The page is now inaccessible via the scroll arrows, though a macro can still jump to the page, and aliases can still reference buttons on the page. In fact, a lot of folks hide ALL the panels in their CCF, to eliminate the scroll arrows, providing buttons (such as tabs) to gain access to the panels. A panel that should "never" be seen would simply have no buttons jumping to it.

Hope this answers your questions. I've been Prontoing all week as you know. :)

Well, now that I finished my "Songs from DKC-86" compilation CD, so what am I going to do now? "Songs from DKC-86 Volume 2!" :) I ripped a bunch of tracks and now I'm auditioning them to make sure they're glitch free before I commit them to a polycarbonate disc. Some of these songs I haven't heard in years, it'll be interesting to see how many strange memories they bring back... :)

Good morning from the right coast. The launch of space shuttle Discovery which was scheduled for last night was cancelled because of last-minute concerns over a bolt on the external fuel tank. It seems strange to me that there wasn't a single word about it in our paper today. Sometimes I'm surprised at the lack of news coverage about the shuttle in our paper.

There has been an update on our forecast. The weather center is now predicting a much more severe cold front. According to the latest forecast, temperatures on Sunday may actually drop down to the 50s. Yikes! I may have to drive down to the Keys for the weekend.

Watch out, it's "D-Day 2000" and I'll be a-postin' all kinds of useless infatuation trivia today! :)

According to the latest forecast, temperatures on Sunday may actually drop down to the 50s. Yikes!Of course, that means it hits 59 at about 4 am Sunday morning, right?? We're expecting a HIGH of about 47 on Sunday, and mid-40s on Monday. And it's raining like crazy now. I'm glad my hobby is home theater and not water skiing or soemthing like that. :)

Now the big news for "D-Day 2000:" I got an email from SVS, and my tube o'bass is expected to arrive on Monday! I guess I'll have to call in sick that day... but then I'll miss the first day of Java class.

I finally finished my co-worker's Pronto last night. Tonight will be fun, we'll be at her house, hooking up her gear, calibrating everything, sampling some DVDs and CDs, and most importantly, making sure all the macros I created for her gear work, especially the ones that get around the fact that a few items don't have discrete on/off codes.

Well, that's it for the moment. I'd post some "D-day" trivia, but the email from SVS caught me off guard. Maybe later on...

Good morning, folks!

I might be watching the last Atlanta Braves game of the season on Saturday. They are down 2-0 to the Cardinals and the Braves look lethargic, like they've run out of gas. And if the Braves happen to win on Saturday, I also have tickets to Sunday. :D Free Braves tickets and free cable modem are the only good perks of working for my company. I'll be taking my friend's little sister to the game since their mom has been requiring lots of care and surveillance, and this would be a good opportunity to get her out of the house get some cold fresh air.

Hope everyone will have a good weekend, and yes, TGIF!

GOD this place sucks. I have a manager with no spine and other leads at my level that have NO clue.
We had a meeting today and I brought up something that someone did that was WAY out of line (I had to bring it up because my manager doesn't like confrontation it seems, so I took care of matters myself), and wouldn't you know the person I was referring to agreed with me saying "Yeah, it's stuff like that that shouldn't be happening so we should watch it..."
I sat there staring at him with that "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" look on my face. I so wanted to say, "But YOU were the one who pulled that little stunt you DOLT!"
I feel as though I've joined the circus, and it's not Cirque Du Soleil! Man these people are retards!
So now I'm considering talking to the division manager to see if he can get things squared away. I need to have a manager that will follow through with what needs to be done when someone pulls something stupid that breaks ALL the rules. Man, I'm a little hot under the collar right now. But if you saw the kind of sh*t people pulled around here you'd be right there with me. Sometimes Mandi and I sit there on the way home going, "Did that REALLY happen? Is that person THAT screwed up?"
I mean, if you had a team of people, and asked them to take on a project, only to turn around and see a different lead, with NO authority over them, literally yelling at them for doing it wouldn't that piss you off? Not only does he not have authority, but if he has an issue with what they're doing he should come to ME with it, as they're just doing what their told.
People also argue with you on one point, and then will LITERALLY change views in the coversation and try to argue your point AGAINST you. It's like in the cartoons when two characters are going back and forth arguing, "Yes, no, yes, no," and then the person who's saying "no" changes their answer to "yes" to get the other character to change his argument.
Freaking toon town, I swear...

Sorry for venting, I wanted to write this out before I called the division manager as he wouldn't appreciate me still being pissed and saying something like "Can you PLEASE manage your little circus you have going on here?!?!" In fact I'm sure that would result in me finding a new job, which isn't all that bad of an idea anyhow. I dunno, we'll see...
I'll post me Pronto questions in a few after I cool down...

Again, sorry for venting, I tried to leave out all inapproproate words and what-not...

Hey Joey, hope everything works out for you. I recommend you watch Office Space this weekend. :) I used to work in a place, where my project leader was a complete jerk--his favorite line was "is it done yet?" or "how's it coming?" asked every 5 minutes from the moment he asked me to do something. So many times I would have liked to say to him "It would have been done 30 minutes ago if you stopped interrupting me to see if it's done yet!" And he'd give me a task and rush me through it, not because it was urgent, but just because he was impatient!! One time he rushed me to get a program change into production when it wasn't due in production for 2 more weeks! And it ended up having problems because he didn't let me test it properly. I reached a point where I actually slowed down my work when he tried to rush me. Not only that, he'd ask me how I was doing on projects that weren't his. I'm so glad I got out of that hell hole. So don't feel bad Joey, you could be far worse off than you are! Put on some of those great 80s CDs you made, they'll make you feel better. :)

Wow, the day is going by fast. I looked at the clock and said "Lunch time already?" I've been listening to my DKC-86 Volume 1 compilation and it's making the time fly, speaking of 80s music. :) Not only that, they're letting us out 2 hours early for the holiday weekend. That's nice, except for the fact that we don't get Monday off! I think I'd rather have the holiday off than 2 hours on Friday, especially since my sub is coming on Monday. I also have a couple of CDs arriving, which have tracks I want to put on DKC-86 Volume 2, so I should be able to burn that one next week.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving and though I will not get my amps this afternoon, even though Andrew will, I have also not received my on sale Rogers DVDs, even though Andrew has, I will have nothing new to play with this week end.... Oh, I do have my sub construction!

This I do have to be thankfull for......

If Earth's population was shrunk into a village of just 100 people -- with
all the human ratios existing in the world still remaining -- what would
this tiny, diverse village look like? That's exactly what Phillip M.
Harter, a medical doctor at the Stanford University School of Medicine,
attempted to figure out. This is what he found.

57 would be Asian
21 would be European
14 would be from the Western Hemisphere
8 would be African
52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be nonwhite
30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59 percent of the entire world's wealth, and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death
1 would be pregnant
1 would have a college education
1 would own a computer

Think of it this way. If you live in a good home, have plenty to eat and can read, you are a member of a very select group. And if you have a good house, food, can read and have a computer, you are among the very elite.

Life doesn't seem as hard now.

Greg, I was waiting on a couple of CD's and Pricne of Egypt DVD.

Joey, cool email, as you can see I totally missed TTP day. I guess well have to do it again next week. :)

Trev, you're still getting close to 100 posts.

Bing, didn't even notice that senior monikor. I wonder when that started. Just saw a news piece that Calgary had a nice snowstorm. We're still having some nice weather.

Jehan, howya doing? It's been a while. Ahh, the HTF meet. Would love to be there, hope you get to meet up with some of the TTPer's.

Mats, Nice flip. But you know I'm letting other people have the fun. :)

Joey, I feel for you, what a situation.

Gregg, go for the pronto. What's holding you back?

Kevin, so is Columbus Day when Chris Columbus discovered America? or is it some other reason?

Bing, Andrew, I yet to receive my $10 dvds from Rogers. Plus from what I know, these are the titles that have or should have dropped in price at all other retailers. I'm pretty disapointed that these haven't shipped. Plus I saw an ad for Rogers PV DVDs and all were selling for $20. To me that seems pretty expensive, considering that I can buy some of those titles for $20.69 at Costco.

In case you missed it on the last page, chapters 3-7 of the TTP are available for viewing here: http://www.idrive.com/pwu888

This will take you to a visitors page on my idrive account. You'll see some TTP VII pages under the 'storage' title. Click on the 'storage' button and that will take you to a directory structure with TTP 3-7. Then you can go and read each chapter and page.

Finally found a person that wants to work for us, now I have to get a whole bunch of material ready for their start date on Tuesday. So if you don't see me for a while that's why. Plus I'll have too many people behind my back.

This whole amp has been a pain in the ass since I told jamie repeadly where to send the amp...but he tried to send it to my work address...which wouldn't have been so bad if it didn't have tax etc to pay on it and secondly he could copy an address right he was trying to send it to Docks Unlimited in Marsh Manitoba...the guy can't even copy an address right...anyway I called Unbelieveable Pacel Screwups and had the address changed to my apartment...then called yesterday to confirm and the address was still wrong...aprt number was off so I changed that as well...so this afternoon I call my wife and tell her to stop by the UPS building and pick up the amp that I was told was being held there...anywho when she getst they look up the tracking info and have to tell her that it was sent to indiana by mistake:(

Sorry to hear that Andrew, no it doesn't make me feel any better, for I certainly feel for you. It is funny though.... Why would he try to send it to your place of work? Is that where you asked him to send it?

In my dealing with him, all my emails had the send to address, as well I wrote it on the Mo and included my business card. I had it sent to my place of work.

Bing, Thanks, somehow I stumbled on the idrive site and they have a program where you can save exact copies of web pages. So I played around with that. The shared function was down for quite a while and only recently did it come back up.

Greg, try it again. If the link doesn't work, you can go directly to the home page and enter my user id, 'pwu888' in the 'VISIT AN I-DRIVE destination i-drive:' field. That should work. If not you got me. I just wish I found this before chapters 1 and 2 went into digital oblivian.

Andrew, that really sucks. Hope you see your amp one of these days.

Trev, nice job on the centry mark and the page flip. Would have been nice to have the first chapter. I think I joined in close to the end of that one, thanks to Joey. :) The couple of things that I do remember was the mega smilie post and someone posting for Radio Shack.

Jehan, having a new toy arrive but having no time to pick it up. Priorities man, gotta have your priorities in order. Who needs to eat or sleep? ;)

Morning people, this was supposed to go up last night, but my quick nap last night turned into a major crash. Man did I need that. We have a turkey dinner with some familly on Sunday and for today I think we'll be doing some housework. I hope to fire up the HT on Monday.

I think next week there is one HT store having a renovation reopenning, 5 new HT rooms, will try to take a look. A&B, the high end division, is having a special audition on some $100K speakers. Sounds like something I should try and make. :) I gots that money lying around in my mattress. ;)

Has anybody herd of the name Michael Heiss? Supposedly considered "the consumer eletronics authority by manufactureres, designers and leading publications such as the Wall Street Journal, MacLeans and British Audio Journal." Well he's giving a 1 hour presentation in a couple of weeks.
Just wondering if it will be worth my time.

Oh yeah, Whole Nine Yards was a fun movie, now I'll have to watch it again. I passed on this title when it first came out in the theaters and then on DVD. I think we picked it up last month out of impulse. Quite enjoyed the movie.

Bing I sent them about 4 emails telling them the proper address to send it to..unfortunatly I send one from work and it had my work address in the bottom sig file so for some bizzar reason they decided to ignor the other four emails with the right address and sent it to work...it wouldn't have been so bad if they could of at least copied it down right...or UPS would read the screens telling them that the package had TWO address changes on it.

UUUUGGGGHHH!!!! There I was lying in bed this morning in a nice slumber, dreaming cool dreams (the kind you actually remember when you wake up) and then the friggin' phone rings! I know better than to pick it up, but I did it anyway. It's one of the people from work and it seems our email server has frozen up. Since the normal Notes email dude has been shipped to Finland for the week, I get the unenviable task of rolling out of bed, taking a shower and driving into work and rebooting that bastich of an email server. AARRGGHH!!!!

Oh well, at least I won't oversleep for the Braves game this afternoon (like I did about 3 weekends ago).

Good morning, TTPers! Hope y'all have a great weekend.

Well I played around with the new Denon 3801 today... (not much as I had a dinner to host later on).

I must say it just blew me away, having not owned the 3300, I must say I really enjoy the 5ch stereo mode - that was a highlight for me. The unit is very solid, around 40 pounds I think. I didn't check out DTS-ES, I need to wire the two new speakers to the back and as soon as I do I will post some results of the Haunting disc.

DTS Neo 6, I am eager to check out too, as well as the new 'widescreen' 7.1 mode which allows 5.1 soundtracks to be played in 7.1 mode.

I will post a longer report later, as I have yet to properly calibrate it, I just did a rush job earlier this afternoon. The 80hz crossover is quite nice too, after tinkering with the sub levels I found the transitions much smoother than with my previous receiver. All I can say is very clean, crisp sound and though my old Sony DB-930 served me well, this thing is in a different league :).

More later ;)

There were 27 different kinds of beer and malt beverages to try:)

The opening band was Johnny and the Bad News...sounded like Johnny and the Good News to me...those guys were very good.

Jimmy Thackery was amazing...when the MC introduced him, he said that Thackery saw Jimi Hendrix play in Washington D.C. when he was 17 years old...there was a definte Hendrix influence going on.

I was able to take my camera in, so I am going to drop the film off after work on Mon.

Speaking of web pages, I gave my site a face lift. I didn't change the look much, but I added a lot of content. I now have an RC plane section (it was just a matter of time, heh) with a NEW surprise on it...actually a few new surpises...you'll have to see for yourself...
And following Bing's lead I made a TTP links section. (Bing, can I use that picture of the old men watching TV? That should be our official TTP logo in my oinion! :) ). I added more pictures of my HT with new stuff (Pronto and Statues and what-not). And I added some other stuff here and there. So have fun! Oh, and be sure to check out the new stuff in the J6P 80s collection section!
But it's WAY too late for me to be up...check my RC plane section to see why I haven't posted much this weekend ;)

Night kids! Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian TTP friends! :)

Hey guys, someone familiar with FedEx tracking should be able to help me. Go to
http://fedex.com/us/tracking and enter 0465871-10000462 for the tracking #. First of all, there's nothing since the package hit Hartford on Thursday. Second, the status says "Call Access Product Support". Is there a problem? Should I call them? Will I see my sub anytime soon?

I'm in a Java class all day so I won't be able to jump in here that much. But if the sub isn't coming today, I want to let Heather know so she isn't waiting all day at home for it to come.

Thanks guys... KJP

Of course you can use the banners :) I just made them really quick if people didn't have a big header on their page. I hope it's okay that I stole some people's headers to use as a banner for their page.
I love that picture of the TTP guys, it's just very appropriate! We should definitely keep that around!
I'll make better banners later, but go ahead and grab what you want for now :)

PS,

Your DVDs arrived, and I hope to get them out today. It's funny, there's a small slip that has everyone's last name who lives on my apartment on my mailbox based on the mail we get there, and it reads:

I saw Remember The Titans (very good), half of Bring It On (that Eliza Dushku - Faith on Buffy - is a hottie!), and Meet The Parents (a must see for anyone that's married or contemplating getting married - I nearly pissed myself, it was so funny in spots. De Niro and Stiller were very good).

My poor Braves. RIP.

Hope everyone is having a good Monday morning, and happy turkey day to our friends above the 48th parallel.

Saw Mission To Mars - so-so (good visual, story didn't do it for me). Definitely a rental, but I enjoyed the making-of documentaries and tidbits.

Anyone been checking out the cheap DVDs at Best Buys lately? I need to see if I can snag Weird Science for $7.

Well, it's 4:10 PM and still no sub. If it hasn't been delivered by the time I get home (sometime after 5) I'll have to yell at Fed Ex. The last item in the tracking is in Hartford last Thursday, and the delivery date is still today. So I have to hope that the tracking site is out of date and the sub is in the back of a Fed Ex truck somewhere in Manchester, and not AWOL in Hartford somewhere.

With my luck, some Fed Ex employee in the greater Hartford area now has great bass in his HT.

Good morning from the chilly right coast. Our cold front was a day late, but it's finally here. Today's expected high is 74 and tonight's low will be 54. Brrrrrrrrr!

Because of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph (VERY rare), the shuttle has been rescheduled for 740 EDT tonight. It's still a bit windy today, but not enough to delay the flight.

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to our beloved northern neighbors.

Weekend movies:
28 Days (Sandra Bullock): ** Just barely worth renting.
High Fidelity (John Cusack): *** Slow start, but eventually a funny movie. Because of endless musical references, may be best suited for ages 30-50.

Joey: Love the HTG banner links.

Good morning everybody!!

Its cold up here too!

Watched Being John Malcovich last night. What a hoot!

My wife cooked Turkey on Sunday so I guess we celebrated Thanksgiving too. She even invited friends over.

I was screaming yesterday...remember the Pioneer Elite player I just purchased (and have not even received yet)? I thought it was an Elite DVL 91 but turns out it is an Elite CVL 91, about 5 -7 ? years older, and not a DVD combo player. Anyway, at least it is an auto flipper. I have been to pissed to ask the guy if AC-3 has been added but will do that this weekend if it has not.

Kevin, what will be your first movie to watch with the new sub?

Joey, how is the Pronto coming? I have almost broken down and bought one, but figure I will at least need a computer at home to program it first.

HELP!!! I took a couple of kid pictures and also a few of the house (with all the fall folliage). Are they any free services for posting on the WWW? I dont know any HTML so I cant make a page but want to post the pictures for family and friends (thinking Chris might like to see what it is like to live up here - God's country).

Hope everybody has a great Tuesday, I will try to get the pictures up today!

I'm not sure what movie will be first. I'm sure I'll be sampling scenes from a few DVDs and some tracks from some CDs to get a "feel" for what bass is supposed to feel like. :) Then one of these weekends we'll get some friends over to watch The Haunting-DTS.

But for now I just have to sit and wait, and wait, and wait...

Gregg,
If you like you can send me all the files you can and I can organize them for you and send them back so you can upload them :) Or you can send me your pictures with a list of captaions and I'll make a page for you...if you like :)

Kevin,
You WILL get it today, oh yes, you will, and then, like me with my Pronto, you'll disappear for an entire week ;)
I'm having a really hard time with two functions...I can't make one of my macro screen scroll with the two front buttons, and my macro to turn on my TV, DVD Player, Receiver, hit input on the TV 3 times, etc... doesn't work either. It's getting a tad bit frustrating, as everything else works just fine! Are you gonna be around today?

Speaking of Halloween, here's something to gum up the works, that my father sent no less:

I'll be back later...

Morning everyone from sunny California :). I promised a longer review of the new toy so here it is. I wrote it at around 2am last night but for what it's worth here it comes...

---

Denon AVR-3801 A/V Receiver

Ok, everything aside if you are looking for a really nice A/V receiver for around US $1000, certainly give this piece a look. I have been following a thread which mentioned using receivers as pre/pros and I cannot agree more. With DPL II on the horizon, shelling out big bucks for a high-end receiver today may be a decision one might regret later on.

Firstly let me say of all the Denon receivers I have had the pleasure to listen to (some more than others), none have ever let me down in terms of build quality and just flat out delivering on what is promised in the specs. This new addition is no different and adds to the great success they had with the AVR-3300, and brings a slew of new features and decoding to please even the most demanding HT geek .

Also I might add that I am a little biased when it comes to Marantz and Denon equipment. To my ears they provide a smooth, silky sound (with the right speakers of course) that really make you want to listen - be it music or HT.
However, having owned a Sony DB-930 for a while, this definately was a change. One thing most might notice is the lack of THX certification and an explicit DD EX mode. This has been beaten to death on threads leading up to the release of this receiver so I won't really go into it, other than to say that I feel I am not missing out on much. The 3801 has enough surround modes (and includes the important stuff IMHO) to keep me happy at least. The power certainly isn't a problem due to the size of my HT room, however if you want something with a little more beef the 5800 may be for you, or as above add an outboard amp of your choice.

Other Audio Equipment used included,

Infinity Reference RS-5 Fronts (200W)
Infinity CC-3 Center (150W)
Infinity Reference RS-3 Surrounds (125W)
Infinity BU-120 Subwoofer (12"/150W :()

Infinity QPS-1 Back Surrounds*** (not included in review)

Monster XP Speaker Cabling w/ Bananas & Spades
Acoustic Research Digital Coax (DVD)
All speakers set to 'SMALL'.

Features

7 ch w/ 105W per channel (8 ohms, 20-20Khz, <0.05% THD)

The AVR-3801 includes Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-ES (6.1 Discrete), DTS Neo:6 (a surround mode that allows 6.1 ch playback of regular stereo sources), 'Widescreen' 7.1 ch playback of sources (Pro Logic, 5.1 etc.). Other DSP modes include (ROCK ARENA, JAZZ CLUB, VIDEO GAME, MATRIX, & MONO MOVIE (!))

It features one 32-bit SHARC FP chip to handle the processing, with D/A conversion done by an Analog Devices 96/24 converter (for all channels). Speakers with impedances of 6-16ohms are suppported for front and surrounds.

2 sets of component video inputs are provided (According to the website they claim it supports HD signals - 480p/720p/1080i), I cannot confirm this yet but I will check up on it. I did follow a similar discussion a while back on the 5800, but have not heard anything with regard to the 3801 and the passing of wide-band signals.

A full set of 7.1 channel pre-amp outputs, controlled by the 8 channel master volume control :).

Initial Thoughts

Ok, well going through some of the things that crossed my mind during the few hours I have had to play with the new toy. The remote is quite decent. Nothing annoying about it, it is reasonable easy to operate and fairly functional. Nothing to throw your Pronto out for, or even the new Denon AKTIS RC-8000 LCD remote . The two sets of rear surround speaker outputs is nice (amplified too ), which can be used for ES/Neo:6/7.1 or for a multi-zone setup if you prefer. As I said I will update this later on.

The Tuner - well can't complain, I always think this is a bonus for receivers anyway. The reception was a little flaky with the standard FM antenna, a little worse than the DB930s. As for heat, I had it going for around 4 hours playing various material and the unit did get a little warm but by no means hot to touch. I need to look into this a little further too when I have more time to run it through its paces... so far I would say heat is not a problem.

As for thoughts on the sound, well I can say it was a substantial step-up from my Sony. Sound was very smooth and crisp with excellent clarity and definition. 'Smooth', is how I would describe the pairing of the Denon and my speakers, YMMV. However, as with other Denon receivers the sound produced is on the warm side. The On Screen display is very nice, no frills but allows setup to be performed relatively painlessly. Settings for delay (speaker distance), speaker levels (via test tones), digital connections and more can be altered via the onscreen setup.
I did mention that I enjoyed the 5ch stereo mode (and I suspect the 7.1 mode too), current or former Denon owners shouldn't be too surprised...

The 80Hz crossover I mentioned in my first post, again this seemed to work a lot better for my setup (now I need that SVS sub ). Another thing I enjoyed was the ability to change the levels of the individual speakers from the confort of my listening position - not a big deal to some, but this drove me crazy when I had my Sony. Additionally, levels can be changed for ALL speakers (Front L & R) and distances likewise (including Sub distance).

I haven't played with all the surround modes fully but they are quite impressive so far. The DTS Neo:6 mode has a 'Cinema' and 'Music' setting optimized for the two formats and it does seem to work rather well. The Cinema setting opens up the soundstage a lot more, and separation really comes through. To clarify a question someone asked me, the Music mode allows the front channels to bypass the decoder and be played directly with no modification, with the center + surround channels providing some expansion to the sound field.

Good old DTS/DD performance is great, I haven't tested something that would rank up there as 'reference', but the two titles I did run through - Paramount's new Pet Sematary and Dead Zone were excellent. Pet Sematary in particular was very, very good with a truly immersive soundfield and fairly good bass extension. Can't wait to give the Jurassic Park discs a spin on this baby .

Ok, well this is getting quite long already so I'll wrap it up. I hope it was helpful in some way and if you have any questions fire them off to me (email is ok) and I will try and answer them. I just wanted to give people a taste of the new product since I got it fairly early and I'm sure many others will be adding to the miriad of reviews popping up on the net. Denon seems to have a winner on their hands here, improving on the success of the AVR-3300.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Jehan, thanks for the review. If you say the Denon has a smooth sound, how do you characterize the sound of your old Sony DB930 in comparison?
Plus, I hope people realize, there should be subtle changes and better ergonomics between a receivers costing $450 and $1000. :D

WTF!!?? That's another WEEK!! I called FedEx again and they were going to radio the driver to find out if the sub is really on the truck, and leave me a message, but I haven't gotten a message yet. I'm really getting to hate FedEx. Their tracking website really stinks. I should have had SVS just strap the sub to the back of a mule, it would have gotten here by now.

Pat :), all the more reason to get one I think!

The Sony was a little on the bright side but definately not much (I would say it's on the border). I always did feel that I was missing something at the high end though. Don't get me wrong, the Sony was an awesome performer for the price. For HT use I really cannot fault it.
Music (stereo) does sound a lot better via the Denon IMO though.

It did lack some of the clarity and definition (at the mid-higher end) than the Denon.
However, for a $1200 MSRP and a street value closer to 1k I think the Denon is a good buy in the long run.

Andrew Pratt

I briefly owned the Sony 930 before I swapped over to a Denon 2800 (then 3300) and the thing I noticed the most was that the Denon's were far better in 2 channel then the Sony. In HT modes both were very very close. One thing that struck me about the Denon's was the lack of "noise", the Denon's sound was extremly clean where the Sony seemed to have some added noise on well recorded 2 channel material. At the time I was use the both the sony and the Denon as pre amps mated to a HK 5 channel amp so the amps weren't a factor. I do agree however that at the price the 930's are going for in the US they are a steal. Up in the great white north though there isn't much of a price difference b/t the Sony 940 and the Denon 2801 or the Marantz 7000 and I'd lean towards the Marantz over those choices.

I have to admit, I'm more of an HT than music dude, just don't have the time to sit there and just listen for the nuances of 2-channel music anymore, but I'll make time for HT. :D Thus, it'll be awfully frosty in hell before I spend $1000 on a receiver. :)

Well, it's 5:30 again and still no sub. And no update on the tracking status, since the est. delivery date changed to 10/17. I think someone at FedEx must be marvelling at the bass he's now experiencing in his home theater.

If it doesn't arrive tomorrow, I might email SVS to see if they can push things on their end. After all, SVS is a FedEx customer, maybe they have more leverage than I would. Or maybe they can file a claim or something.

Lex, yup. I think today's gear delivers so much more and yet costs so little, it's staggering how good the mid-line stuff is. I may feel different if I had a room that was designed for listening to music and such, but it's not a priority given the room I listen to music and watch movies currently.

Plus, I can't really justify the expense, but that's just me. I'd have a hard time plunking down more than $600-$700 on a new receiver. I'm a firm believer in diminishing returns. I don't need to go to "11" anymore. And with my hearing nowadays, I doubt the extra bucks spent would make a big impact on my listening enjoyment.

I don't begrudge others who spend the big $$$, if it makes them happy, that's all right by me.

Of course, now I may booted from any and all HT sites for my frugal views on HT gear.

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Howdy folks, almost went through a page with out a post. Only managed to watch The Usual Suspects over the long weekend. Spent most of Saturday out and about enjoying the nice sunny weather. Sunday was rest day and watched Usual Suspects. Also went to my Aunt's for turkey dinner. Played a bit of N64 there, also was hoping to talk a bit about HT as I saw a Sony cataloge laying around, but papercliped to the DB940 page. No such luck, as my uncle wasn't around too much that night, which was really weird. Anyway, told my cousin that DB940 is good, HS10 sets are great. I'll see what comes of it over the next few months. Would really love to put my input into his setup. Although, I still have the stigma of eltronic clutz. You see when I was younger, I played around with their TV and VCR, they had one of the first few VCRs. I really don't understand what I did, but I guess his program never got taped, and I think somehow I wrecked the VCR. I still don't know how that could have happened, but eversince I've had that stigma over me.

Nice flip Joey, now that I'm your roomy, shouldn't I get some part time on your equipment? ;) I would have thought that you'd have a lot more roommates. Nice pics of the RC planes and the flight mpgs.

Greg, I could never get the full copy of the Turkey song, am trying now at work.

Kevin, that's really bad news about your sub. I do hope you see it sooner rather than later.

Pl@, Half of Bring It On? Will probably go see Meet the Parents this weekend.

Andrew, the next two months are going to be killer. :) I have to make some room in my software rack to hold all the new dvds that I'll be buying.

Jehan, excellent review. Makes me want to upgrade, which totally goes against my 5 year plan.

Here's some interesting bits on Thanksgiving in Canada. This was sent to me via another list.

CANADIAN THANKSGIVING--There are three traditions behind our Canadian Thanksgiving Day.

1) Long ago, before the first Europeans arrived in North America, the farmers in Europe held celebrations at harvest time. To give thanks for their good fortune and the abundance of food, the farm workers filled a curved goat's horn with fruit and grain. This symbol was called a cornucopia or horn of plenty. When they came to Canada they brought this tradition with them.

2) In the year 1578, the English navigator Martin Frobisher held a formal ceremony, in what is now called Newfoundland, to give thanks for surviving the long journey. He was later knighted and had an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Canada named after him--Frobisher Bay. Other settlers arrived and continued these ceremonies.

3) The third came in the year 1621, in what is now the United States, when the Pilgrims celebrated their harvest in the New World. The Pilgrims were English colonists who had founded a permanent European settlement at Plymouth Massachusetts. By the 1750's, this joyous celebration was brought to Nova Scotia by American settlers from the south. At the same time, French settlers, having crossed the ocean and arrived in Canada with explorer Samuel de Champlain, also held huge feasts of thanks. They even formed 'The Order of Good Cheer' and gladly shared their food with their Indian neighbours. After the Seven Year's War ended in 1763, the citizens of Halifax held a special day of Thanksgiving. The Americans who remained faithful to the government in England were known as Loyalists. At the time of the American revolution, they moved to Canada and spread the Thanksgiving celebration to other parts of the country. Many of the new English settlers from Great Britain were also used to having a harvest celebration in their churches every autumn. Eventually in 1879, Parliament declared November 6th a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. Over the years many dates were used for Thanksgiving, the most popular was the 3rd Monday in October. After World War I, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving were celebrated on the Monday of the week in which November 11th occurred. Ten years later, in 1931, the two days became separate holidays and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day. Finally, on January 31st, 1957, Parliament proclaimed...

"A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God
for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed...
to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October."

Our American neighbors, where it stays warmer for a longer time and they harvest later in the year. They observe Thanksgiving in November, according to a law passed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

Wow what a busy DVD day, Jurassic Park / Lost World (DTS), Rules of Engagement and The Beyond Tin on my doorstep... I saw a thread on DVDFile that mentions that the DTS encoding was botched on all JP discs.. eeek.. apparently an announcement from DTS is forthcoming.. :(

Little Bruce, can we call you LB for short, or how about Bruce Jr? What Jehan said, just a tradition here at TTP. There are others, but we all seem to be pretty busy these days. You'll see more as the thread moves on to its 100th page. :)

Jehan, wow have I really turned flipping into an artform? I'm flattered. :) I'll have to pay more attention to those flips. I hadn't heard about the botched DTS encoding, I'll have to read up on that and let my friend know, he's become a big DTS fan. I'm not, but only cause my system can't handle it. :( One of those if I had to do it over again, I would have made sure I could do DTS.

Hey all, been a little busy. Had the in-laws down over the weekend, had a nice visit. Went out for lunch and dinner several times, and had a chicken fried steak so big it was hanging over the edges of the plate! :) So I was stuffed as well even though it was not Thanksgiving here!

Sunday night after they left I went about trying to install the new sink me and my wife bought at Home Depot. Started way too late and then ran into some problems. Had to go back to Home Depot (the 24 hour store 15 miles away) 2 different times as I couldn't get a fitting to tighten correctly on the water line from the shut off valve. Well at about midnight, I said screw this, I'm calling a plumber Monday morning.

He made it out this morning and now I'm $87.50 lighter. But I have a pretty new sink / water control handles to stare at when I wash my hands! :D

Only bad thing is that was my Jurassic Park / Lost World & Rules of Engagement money ... :(

Paul - did the Turkey Song ever play? Hope it worked for those of you who wanted to listen, if not, I could email the file to you.

Gregg - awesome beautiful scenery. You are a lucky man! Good looking kids as well!

Jehan - great review and nice flip!

KJP - I work for a ground transportation company, not FedEx, and know how easy it is for things to get delayed. Have faith, hopefully it will show up anytime. If not, I can tell you who you should have used! ;)

J6P - nice update on the webpage! Where do you find the time??

Mats - good night and congrats on getting to 100 posts!

Pl@ - I'm with you, I enjoy my HT for movies more than for music listening, although I definitely have increased my listening time since I have a great receiver (Denon 3300). But if I had to give up 2 channel stereo CD listening to keep 5.1 for movies, bye bye 2 channel!

Well I just hooked up the Soundstream M3 to the system, and it is scary how clean and powerfull these sound. I couldn't wipe the sh*t eating grin off of my face :B , I just finished listening to Christian Mcbride "gettin to it" That title track totally kicks, +7 dB on the Denon, and still plenty more, 'cept my family's around and can't take the loud music :( This is all with out my sub, and I don't think music needs it for the bass has so much mid punch now.... Did I tell you guys I ended up buying 7 of these mono blocks?

I have always been more of a music hifi nut that HT, and I certainly have been re-aquainted of late.

Nicely done Photo Pat, nice composition, at first look I thought it to be a Stevie Ray V album cover.

Hello to you up in Switzerland Mats...

Pl@, frosty day in hell???? don't make promises you know you can't keep LOL :)

Good one Joey, that reminds me of when we were young teens and we were giving out ketchup and mustard packs with a few cans of beans... man we howled. Now that I'm older, not much wiser, I still want to do it, But you know, have to be an upstanding citizen, piller of the community...

Thanks for the history lesson Paul, you carry stuff like that around in your head all day? ;)

Just a note, I spun Rules of Engagement tonight after a glowing review on the HTF and boy I wasn't dissapointed. Truly a reference audio disc if I ever heard one. The opening scene in the jungle was great and the discs transfer was excellent. At least worth a rent, highly recommended to Trevor (or any of the Big Bass Boys (BBB) :)).. those Servos will get a workout! :)

Hello everybody.

Jehan,,Nice reveiw of the 3801,,I am really getting the urge to get some new stuff now. I will rent the movie you suggested,,sounds good and I like bass.

Gregg,,Enjoyed your pictures..Nice pics of the kids and almost exactly the same age as mine. Your house is beautiful and huge..Love the large deck off the back,,I can see you spending a lot of time there..Also the veiw is absolutely breath taking...Now I can see why you moved down to the states...Very Nice!!

Bing.. 7 amps...Cool..your bad!!

Kevin,,Sorry to her about the bad luck,,I know what it is like to be waiting for something that never seems to arrive,,Hope you get that sub soon.

Paul,,Let me know when you get the Sony P2..October 26 is the release date..I might get one too!!

Patman,,The more expensive receivers do make a difference in sound quality in a very significant way..I had some lower priced recievers in my system ,,actually tried 3 different ones and they can't compete to the better quality units..Its not just features but the quality of amps and DAc's that make the difference.

Goodnight TTP's.

Hey Lex! What's up?

Well, nobody else mentioned me on this page. Even Mats got a mention. Hell, am I the only one that cares? rofl.

I think JP is ordered from Amazon for me, someday soon I guess. I think I ordered something else, blah, what was that again, hmmm. I know I need Toy Story, what a great movie.

Broke out an oldie but a goodie night before last. "First Knight" Definitely worth being in the library. The very first scene is visually stunning imagery, I thought.

Come to think of it, I have watched a new DVD every night since Sunday! How long can this go on? Is it a sickness? Or is it wellness?

Like you guys care about any of this right?

Looks like Mats learned a lesson from Andrew on "Post Padding". It's a ttp concept, that bears discussion merit. I for one, won't be caught post padding over here is ttpville, I really won't!

Hi Lex!! I'll put First Knight on my to buy list.

Kevin, so where is the sub?

Pat / guys: I agree with Pat's deminishing returns theory. Features are nice but very pricy and quality doesnt always have to cost $$$

Paul W: Thanks for the history lesson, I am printing it off as many always ask "what's up with the CDN Tgiving in October??"

Jehan: Nice flip, see you in one month!

Greg: I too had a plumber over last night. My oil tank started to leak - about 2 gallons worth but it was in an unfinished part of my bassment (:)). Luckily, he was the guy that installed it so I wont get a bill for the fix. The good looking kids are by way of my wife and the mail man (no relation to Ron E)

Trevor / Bing. Thanks for the nice words about the house. The View is actually from the front of the home. I am in a very economically challenged (sp?) area and housing is CHEAP!!. My home if bought in Mass, CT, area would be way too expensive. Any / all are always welcome to come and visit. We live about 3.5 hours north or Boston and 1.75 hours Southwest of Bangor. Sugarloaf ski resort is about 30 minutes away.

Hope everybody was a great E. N. Day!!

Morning all, still no sub. I sent an email to SVS to see what they think of it. It seems odd that the tracking site shows no scans after 10/5 in Hartford.

Greg (1 "G")--maybe you should tell SVS about your shipping company. AFAIK they always use FedEx Ground. All I can say is they could have strapped my sub to the back of a mule and it would get here sooner. :)

Gregg (2 Gs)--I wish I knew where the heck my sub is right now. I can hope that it is in the back of a Fed Ex truck somewhere in Manchester. More likely, it's still in the greater Hartford area. Or in a Fed Ex employee's home theater. ;)

In the meantime, that CS 800 amp you sold me sits in the rack, idle. I can turn it on and listen to the fan hum, but that's about it until Fed Ex coughs up a sub. Not only that, my JP and LW DVDs (DTS) arrived yesterday.

Lex,

What's the magic number for the flip?

Kevin,

I hope your sub arrive's soon! The SVS subs were one of the best additions to my HT. BTW, check them out very carefully when they arrive. Fed-X kicked the hell out of my subs. It took about 3 nights of work to rebuild 1 of the two that were shipped to me.

Greg LLL,

Nice house!

Bing!

C-5??? Not in the budget! ;)

Joey,

Great site! Nice work, and best of luck with school.

Trevor,

How's your brother doing? I thought I'd also mention that the Cinepro 3k6II amp is doing one hellava job in the HT. ;) :D.

Andrew,

I read that the JP disk had some encoding problems? What was the sound track like?

Greg S,

I have tried many home reno's in the past but, now when there is a problem I let my fingers do the walkin. Not worth the stress. :)

I enjoeyed JP but my monoblock is still being held by customs (bastards) so I had to watch it w/o the sub running:( I though the surrounds were very natural and well used not calling attention to themselves like some mix's do. I have a friend with the DTS LD so I'll have to go over and A-B the two to see what differences there are. I'm not sure I believe all the rumours about a bad mix on the DTS disc, Universal did the mix not DTS so if there was to be an announcement I'd figure it would come from them not DTS....guess we'll find out.

Gregg, Wow those are great views, great pics of your kids. Next TTP meet is at Gregg's!

Bing, for a sec there I was thinking you got a M3? Then I clued in, oh those monoblocks. :) Naw, I don't remember that kind of stuff, but I did save the email that I got last year. I swear I have a massive email file. I just tend to collect email.

Trev, I'll be sure to let you know when I get a PS2. Unfortunately the way things stand, it will be quite a while before I make the plunge. Earliest would be sometime next year. Especially since I got the PS1 a few months ago. Let me know if you do get one.

Joey, I recognize some, others look familiar but I can't quite place the movie, and other are???

FYI Canadians, apparently the B&M Future Shops will be honoring/using their web prices so make sure you get the lowest price from them when you shop there.

Hey Lex...Wass-sup?

She said if we can spend that much on our HT she should be able to get the car! But, it just
doesn't work like that I told her!!!

So the problem is....? Rick, you remind me of my Buddy Cam in Calgary. He just finished building a new house in Mackenzie Town, it has a dedicated theater room in the basement, all wired for all possable future toys, ie front projector, real nice! He has nice sound equipment, and a 32" trinitron. His mate said she would like to get a front projector right away to finish the room, he's dragging his heels saying "but we have so many other things to buy" Sure, but that would be at the top of my list! :W

Maybe that's why I don't have a new house in Mackenzie Town or a new C5???

Good Fun stuff Andrew, what's this I read your getting some 16's?? Want to elaborate?

I run my main speakers to large and my amps go to 11! :B What's the buzz over there now? JP DTS...flawed, vs LD, blah, blah, blah :Z

Paul, I wish I could buy a M3, right now the only M3's I can afford are the Soundstream M3's. Toybox will be cool!

Tough test Joey!

Pl@, way to go, good job! If I had your DVD collection, I may have known those, but I am after all, a music nut first :W One thing I aspire to is to have a DVD collection like yours, and others where I have more than one title in the alphabetical catagory.

Pounded in the T-nuts to the back of the baffle and epoxied them in place, hope this works or I'll be #@&%^!!**#$><{ pretty darn loud.

Hey Lex, how's it going? You wanna look in to that shameless post padding by 2 unnamed induviduals on this thread today? :W

Well I am selling my beloved Energy RVSS bipole surrounds and I'm going to use the MMG's as rear speakers. To replace them I have bought a pair of Maggie 1.4's. A few weeks ago I discovered these as a local sale in the Denver area so I passed them on to thomas. He bought them and has now decided that he doesn't really need them so he's offered them to me. the 1.4's are an older model that most closely resemble the newer 1.6's. The 1.4's are 5 feet tall and almost 2 feet wide so they are a good bit larger then the MMG's. This will help their lower bass extension and will give an even larger soundstage then the MMG's can. All going well I should have them some time late next week or early the week after (shipped today via UPS) Now all I need is a matching centre and I'll have an all Maggie HT:e

Here's what I posted elsewhere re: JP on dts DVD and dts LD:

I have both the dts LD and the dts DVD of JP. I just got through comparing the 2 version.

I did no "volume matching" per se, but during the non-loud parts, the SPLs were about the same. So I left the volume level alone (found a nice level that got peaks of 97dB for the loud parts).

I played the LD about 5 seconds ahead of the DVD version, listened to the LD version first, watched the SPL meter, and then switched to the DVD version and watched the SPL meter.

What I found was that during the loud passages, the LD was almost 3dB louder than the DVD version. I didn't feel the bass with the DVD, but I did with the LD version.

The video of the DVD was better than the LD (a bit washed out and little bit brighter).

Good belated morning TTP gang!

Welcome to the HTG Forum Lexman and better yet welcome to the TTP.

Bing ,,Did you get the A&B sound flyer today? ..They advertised the Denon 5800 for $5799, The add contained a photo of the back side of the 5800 with a slogan to see the front side please visit A&B Sound. I will have to go have a quick little look at this little receiver. They also had the 3801 advertised for $1999.

Hey Rick,,Glad to see you back on the TTP..and thanks for rubbing it in.:) I am so itchy right now for new gear that its becoming unbearable. I have to get something pretty soon.,like today.
BTW,,which SVS subs did you get,,I think the self powered subs just became available. I would probably get the passive sub and get the high powered amp to go with it..I would imagine the fidek would be more powerful than the 190 watt model.

Chris,,The Braveheart LD is a reference audio Laserdisc ,but the video was pretty grainy on my screen..still you will enjoy it.

Patman,,thanks for the JP reveiw..The Laserdisc does rock!!

Have a good evening everybody!!!

Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near an abandoned gas station.

They approached one of the petrol pumps, and one of them said to it,"Greetings, earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader."
The petrol pump, of course didn't respond.
The alien repeated the greeting. There was no response. The alien, annoyed by what he perceived to be the petrol pump's haughty attitude, drew his
ray gun, and said impatiently, "Earthling, how dare you ignore us in this way!
Take us to your leader or I will fire!"
The other alien shouted to his comrade, "No, you mustn't anger him!" But before he finished his warning, the first alien fired. There was a
huge explosion that blew both of them 200 meters into the desert, where they landed in a heap. When they finally regained consciousness, the one who fired turned to the other one and said, "What a ferocious creature. It nearly killed
us!
But how did you know he was so dangerous?"
The other alien answered, "If there's one thing I've learned during all my travels through the galaxy, it's that if a guy has a penis he can
wrap around himself twice and then stick into his own ear, don't mess with him!"

Nice flip Greg.

Trev, I saw the A&B flyer as well. In fact I probably have last years as well. That's on loaded back pannel on the Denon. Pricing is like, well it's a dollar per model number. So that means the 3801 is a bargain. :) Yes it's true, JP comes in PS as well. There's also the collectors PS double pack.

Hey all, what a hub of activity today and this evening!

Congrat's on the additional Maggies Andrew. Well I may as well use my B&W's for flower planters and boat anchors hey? :W

Trev, I have not seen the flyer yet, but will be more than wanting to come down and help you lift that 580o or 3801 or anything else you may need help picking up... heheh, that's funny "...Like Today!" LOL

Just finished screwing my box.... :B What did you think I meant? So I have the bottom, sides and top together and glued, this includes the two inner brace sheets as well. I glued all joining surfaces and ran fillets of glue down each side of the joint. Do I still silicone on top of this glue?

J6P, Heathers is one of my all-time favorite movies, I'd recognize that bomb and Slater's left hand anywhere.

Bing, yes, caulk each and every seam/edge inside the box. Be sure to run your finger through the caulk to force it into the little cracks.

Is it just me, but does it strike y'all funny that we spend 10 out of 35 posts/page on "Nice flip." :D

The JP dts LD is hands-down the better audio mix over the dts DVD version (and I don't think I've heard the DD version is substantially better than the dts DVD version).

Trevor,

Thanks for the welcome back!!! I did go with 2- passive 20-39 SVS subs. I use the sixth channel on the Cinepro to drive them both. I had no problem lifting the 5800 into my rack a couple of weeks ago! ;) I bought it from A&B
But, the new 104"x 58" 16x9 Da-lite tab tensioned screen was a hellava work out. I've had the upgrade bug lately.

Bing,

I don't take my wife to the Vette store anymore.

The sub saga continues. I called FedEx yesterday afternoon and while I was on the phone with them suddenly the status changed on the web site. According to the rep, a delivery attempt was made but no one was home at the time, so they will attempt again tomorrow. My co-worker thinks we should just run over to FedEx (not far from where I work) and pick up the package. So we did. No such luck... the depot near work only handles air shipments, not ground. They didn't even know where the ground shipments are handled, so I figure I'll just sign the note they left on the door, leave the fence gate unlocked and have them leave the package behind the fence if no one is home. I get home... and no notice. Which means they either didn't leave a note like they're supposed to, or they didn't come at all. So, I'm on the phone with FedEx AGAIN. I ask them if I could change the package to a pick-up or change the address to have it sent to my office but they couldn't do it. They transferred me to someone who handles traces to find out where the thing is but he wasn't able to help me, he just said "I'll have to call you back." Which of course means "Get off the phone so I can get back to my Solitaire." ;) Of course, they never called.

So, this morning I left a note on the door with instructions and a signature--hopefully they'll accept it as an authorization to leave the package instead of just a note. Of course my wife won't be home most of the day today.

SVS has a trace going too, so hopefully we'll find out where this danged thing is once and for all.

I'm never ever going to have something shipped FedEx Ground ever again. I'll pay the extra for Air, or UPS.

KJP - call and ask for either the customer service manager or terminal manager. Explain your predicament to them. That is bull that they cannot change the address on where to deliver your sub, it's called a reconsignment. Throw that at them. Tell them with the delays and problems you have had, you are not going to pay the reconsignment fee either. You want your sub and you want it now. Get his full name and direct number if possible, ask what the name of his boss is, get his number, and tell them you are going to expect a call on the hour every hour today until you get your sub, or you are going to call his boss direct. Then watch the magic unfold.

Remember, I was a customer service manager last year, and anytime someone called and did this to me, I made dang sure I resolved the problem, as I was too busy to call someone each and every hour to update them on their missing freight.

Give it a try, let me know if I can help. I'll call for you if you want.

I just checked my voice mail, and there was a message from my wife.

The SVS is in the house!

So, this waiting game is finally over. Of course, the tracking site still shows not delivered, so I figure Fed Ex Ground's biggest problem is their crappy tracking. Still, I'm going to avoid them in the future since they weren't all that helpful.

I updated my signature...
