Why o why am I considering yet a 3rd Phillips remote? lol. It's a sickness guys. Be careful, you might catch it.

Stay tuned, there could be something going on soon. You heard it here first, in TTP, brought to you live via satellite, cable or some such deal.

Good jobs on the logos Joey! I'ma ordering that grey shirt with our posts like Pl@man said...

Rick, that was in Canada, I got it from a place in town called "AllStar Show Industies" They must have a outlet in Edmonton as well for that's where this one came from.

I really like this unit and can't believe I have been with out this for so long. One handy feature will be the programable presets. I'll set up one Program to be flat, one to be over boosted, one for music, one for overboosted music (DISCO) :B ...etc

This will certainly be the ticket to control your 2 SVS's for it is a 2 channel parametric EQ. Depending on how deep your dip is, generally you don't want to boost dips for it takes headroom away from your amp, however in your case you have bags of power so you will be ok. You have 12 filters that you can assign any ISO frequency ie. in your case 50Hz, you can then boost this by 16dB or cut by 48dB. If that's not enough, you can stack filters by assigning another filter to 50Hz as well to boost or cut even more as required.
Another cool feature that I hope to soon have hooked up is the midi port control. With this connected to my PC's SB Live card, I can graphically control and manipulate the EQ with the PC real time..... This is truely a bargin for the amount of power and geekness in one package. It seems very well built as tactile control is first rate.

Buy the way, I picked up the analog SPL meter after you kicked my ass into it :B Thanks!

Trev, hope your feeling better soon. Don't feel bad at all, I was able to finish Christmas shopping tonight instead. So we'll make it another time :) Take care....

Greg, Congrat's on the Pronto, this truely is becoming a TTP Pronto Gang. Your gonna like it!

But wait, there's more...
I call yesterday after seeing that my package was screwed and called. I was assured by an "extremely nice UPS lady" (otherwise known as a **tch) that though she apologizes for the screw up, she WILL have it to me that same day by 7PM. So I wait...
I think everyone here knows just how impatient I am when it comes to deliveries. I think my philosophy goes something like, "Deliver it, and deliver it NOW!" ;)
8PM rolls around, so I call in and ask for a supervisor. "I'm not sure why she told you that, we don't offer that kind of service..." So I was lied to by the first lady I spoke with. Probably trying to get me off the phone so she could go home. But the supervisor tells me she'll refund her money. I tell her it's not about the money, I just want my damn DVD, and I DON'T want to wait until Monday to get it! Damnit, I wanted to come home and relax and watch it. A lot of people are waiting for Star Wars. Not me, I wanted Fantasia on DVD, just to give you my perspective on how important this was (or as if it were an Aibo and this was happening).
So I demand Saturday deliver (not really demand, I actually had a pleasant tone in my voice the entire time, because getting pissed doesn't ever help. I sounded as pleasant as a Disney Channel operator.
Anyhow, she says she'll see what she can do, and she'll call me back in an hour.
That was 8PM last night...no call, nothing. So I called back, and there's no record of me talking to any supervisor, or any notes of anything being tried.
Pardon my french, but I swear they're a bunch of ****ing bastards. They totally just blow you off. Why is that? So I'm going to call back and go as high up the ladder that I can, and DEMAND they fix this problem. I can't believe they put it on the wrong truck in the first place. I thought literacy was a pre-requesite for working at UPS, what, with all the letters on the packing spelling out words that determine where the packages go and everything.
Damn them!

Good Morning!

Bing,

Thanks for the info. :) I bought all my middle atlantic racking from that store. I'll have to go check that out. I am only using one channel to drive both SVS 20-39's.

Watched the "Perfect Storm" last night, and found it to be a very good movie. I'm not sure how the 5800 should handle "DD 5.1 EX"? It defaults to surround 6.1 which it will do for all DD movies, or I can switch to Home THX EX mode. The 6.1 surround seems to be the better format.

Pat,

That makes a few of us at work today! :(

Hope that everyone has a good one!

Hey guys!

RickS - we'll be watching The Perfect Storm tonight. We're having about 8 or 9 people over (not quite sure where everyone's going to sit ;)), it'll be fun. Especially with the DD EX 6.1 and the SVS sub! We enjoyed the movie in the theater (we made a special trip to a theater that has Dolby Digital), haven't seen it on DVD yet.

You'll never believe what came in the mail today... a VHS tape from Tweeter titled "House of Bose--The definitive guide to the Bose Lifestyle 40 and 50 Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound systems." I'll have to pop it in one of these nights for the amusement factor. I'm sure after watching the tape we'll be saying to each other "Hey! Let's sell all this big, bulky stuff--the Outlaw receiver, the Platinum Audio speakers, the SVS sub, the Peavey amp... and get one of these Bose Lifestyle Systems!! I can hardly wait! Let's go to Tweeter NOW!! Hey, we can even get a free Bose Wave Radio!" :B

See ya... KJP

Not too bad of a day...

First off I had to go in to work on Sat, as I am leaving, my wife tells me I am supposed to stop by my mom's after work, for some lunch or whatever.

Well I was lucky enough to get out of work in 4 hours, so I stop by my mom's and...nobody is home.

So I come home and start to pick up a little here and there and splat...a opened full can of Mtn Dew all over the dining room chair and floor and my coat that was on the chair.

I get that cleaned up and proceed to try and seal up a window that the glazing has become brittle and started to fall off...BAM!...the window now has a 18" crack in it.

Try to relax a little and see what all my TTP buddies are up too...cannot find server...try bunch of other web sites...nothing. Maybe the modem just needs to be reset. Pull the plug on the modem, wait 5 min...try again, nothing. Start looking at all the network settings...everything seems to be in order...wait, there is an entry for a network card that hasn't been in my system for over 3 months...get all the old crap off the system...reboot...system hangs...power down completely...finally, now it is faster than it was before, whew.

Now the phone rings and it is the wife, wanting to know if I am coming over for lunch. So I get to tell her that I was already there and all the other great things that have happened today.

Blah, blah, blah

Sorry for the vent guys but I feel a little better now.

Thanks Paul, I needed that:B
Joey...I know how you feel:)
Rick, hopefully your day is better than mine.

Hi Everybody..

Rick,,good thing you held onto your Cinepro..I was reading the The Denon 5800 was measured at 138watts x 5 all channels driven..Would even be power if driving all 7 channels. I can see now, how you would say the Cinepro is in a different League..

Kevin,,Enjoy the Perfect Storm. I haven't seen it yet, but sure hope to see it soon..Thats one of those DVD's that won't play on the 3108.

Pat,,Nice venting..That's what we are here for..To support other TTP'ers. Hope the rest of your day goes better for you.

Bad news..I did get the 3108 back after they were supposed to have upgraded the Firmware..well they did all sorts of work on it including alignment and cleaning etc..but no firmware upgrade...I went to put MI2 into it and its a no go..They said there was a misunderstanding ,,and the new guy at the desk forgot to indicate the upgrade on the workorder..He made indication that it didn't play certain discs,,thus the cleaning and stuff.. So now I have to take it back in again. :M

Kevin,

The "Perfect Storm" is listed on the back cover and all the literature that I've read to be Dolby Digital 5.1 EX. The Denon 5800 will matrix any DD disk too 6.1 surround. So what's the difference between DD 5.1 EX and DD 5.1? I can't find anywhere were it should be processed any other way in my manual.

Pat,

Hope your evening works out better than the day you've had!!! Relax, throw in a movie, pour a tall cool one and put it behind you. :)

Trevor,

That's the shits when stuff like this happens. Do you have an old DVD player?

I only drive my surround back channels with the 5800. The six other channels are driven by the 3k6II. The Dynaudio speakers are 4 ohm so the amp is putting out 600wpc. I have the SVS subs hooked up in series so this presents a 8 ohm load to the amp, so each sub is seeing about 200 watts each. I had the subs hooked up in parallel which I was told by Cinepro is probably in the 1200 watt range or 600 per sub. The drivers would bottom out all the time. The addition of the Cinepro is one of the best changes I've made in the HT. The 5800 is very good but, the amp section is no where near the Cinepro.

I think I'm going to give the FBD a try to adjust some of the problems caused by my room. Thanks Kevin and Bing. :)

I think it will be MI2 tonight!

Nice flip Rick,,now you need some animations up there..

The server is slow but its just the TTP ..It took me about 10 minutes to get on here just now..I kept getting error messages when trying to get on to the HTG.

Rick the DVD player is my only one ..I refuse to use the P2 DVD player..I spoke with A&B sound today in regards to the 9200..He's still waiting contact with the Toshiba rep to get some details..He did track down a SD-9100 for $1699 said I could have it for $1200..Good deal ,but I would rather go with the 9200 since its the newer model anyways.!!

Later.

Hey all!

Sorry to hear of your day Pat.... Time to plug in AC/DC Shoot to Thrill, or The Cult Love Removal Machine... Cranked to the max to exorsize those demons :B

That Cinepro is one great investment Rick, what a power house.

Man, I had to get out of the house, I was running low frequency sweeps all afternoon tuning the sub. A person can only take so much of that. My head still hurts.

I watched The Perfect storm last night, what a stressful show! It started out nice enough, but when they were in the storm I had about all I could take. I almost quit, but I preservered so I could see the end. After I went on the PC and I swear the screen was swaying :B

Trev, I would run the PS DVD, just because :)

You didn't take your DVD player to Hi-Teck did you? Those were the guys that had my player for 12 weeks. They kept blowing IC's.

Going to watch Frequency tonight.

Okay, movie review time:

Billy Elliot - Dancing with Miners

I finally saw this film today. It's a film about passion, love, understanding and sacrifice. The film does a good job of developing the main character and his road to ballet in spite of the odds (his father's initial disapproval, his brother's indifference, and his own temper). This film has a warm center, it does have heart. Whether the boy can dance or not is not the question, it's whether or not this boy has passion for dancing and what he and his family are prepared to do to take on this passion.

Once you get used to the heavy cockneyed English accent and get settled into the film, the use of the "put-downs" are truly touching and funny. Billy's dad is a miner who's on strike, and has problems keeping food on the table.

Jamie Bell, who plays Billy Elliot, does a great job capturing Billy's passion, and his inner conflict with his dream given the circumstances with his family. I think it's one of those really good child performances that comes along once or twice in a decade.

I gave it a grade of B+, or 3.5 out of 4 stars. It's worth seeing, either with your family or friends.

--------

Bounce - just a little.

Okay, pretty much what you saw of the trailer gives you way too much plot for Bounce. While there are some tender moments, the main characters are not truly realized, and it affects my overall reaction to the film. There's just a little too much shorthand in this film which could have given more weight to the characters so that when they finally figure it all out, you really care for them. The 3rd act wasn't spellbinding or earth-shattering w/r/t dramatic tension or impact.

It's likely to be a couple's movie (so, guys, be prepared!). The performances by Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow are good, but toned down a little too much. The supporting cast is good, but one-dimensional. I think the screenplay needed about 2 more rewrite to get it really tight.

I give it a grade of C, or 2 out of 4 stars.

-----------

The Sixth Day - a somewhat long day

This movie had a neat premise, and features that everyman hero, Ahnuld, that it's makes for compelling viewing. :D (Just kidding).

Actually, while intriguing, the movie features some cute running jokes on bad guys who just won't go away, and some funny lines from Ahnuld once he dispatches the bad guys. Though I had fun watching it, the thing that bothers me the most about this film is that there is absolutely no sense of danger in the finale, maybe it's Ahnuld-itis (will he ever die in one of his movies?) or maybe it's just a predictable script, I don't know.

I give it a C+, or a full 2.25 stars out of 4 stars. Let's hope no one clones this movie.

--------

The Grinch Who Stole the Box Office

This movie will make around $40-$50 million this weekend. I could not believe how many kids (and their parents) were in attendance, shows were selling out.

Now onto the review: It's about 20-30 minutes too long. The movie takes about 30 minutes to get going. There was quite a few adult jokes in there (i.e., The Ice Storm's key party) but most children won't understand it. I thought Jim Carrey gave as good a performance that he could with the so-so screenplay. But, there is a stretch of about 5 minutes where he's deciding what to wear to the Whoville Christmas Cheermeister awards that's just f-ing hilarious, I was close to ROTFLMAO.

I did not like the additions and changes to the Grinch lore, but the set design was pretty good, and consistent. The child who plays Cindy Lou is truly a cutie. I loved her insistence that The Grinch was still lovable in spite of his antics to prove otherwise. The dog, Max, was pretty funny and lovable.

The pacing was a little strange and abrupt (as was the plot).

If you have kids, you'll be taking your children to see this movie. People did clap once the ending credits started rolling, so for kids, it works. For adults, there are some yuks (that should go over kids' heads), though few and far between.

My grade is a B- (or 2.5 stars).

Trev, Very seldom we do VHS, but when Anna and the King came out it was only VHS. We had to see it :) My transistion may be complete now :B

Sask-Tel, Sympatico is all the same thing Trev. Sympatico offers, Dial-up modem and Various levels of High-Speed services. They have an enhanced that offers the same upload speed as download, I'm told it's slighty faster than Standard High-speed. High-speed is a dedicated line, for it requires a particular filter (sez Christine) to not bugger the phone line. You can have additional lines installed for a one time charge.

Hello!, recovering from the great experience that was Gladiator last night. Awesome disc - I don't think I need to say anything, most of you will be picking this up (or have it already) :).

Just wrapped December's preorders using 800.com's 20 off 100, MS Passport 20% off and a spare GC I had lying around. Great deal, those who can, should use this 20% off thing - it rocks! :)

Got some of that AR Superflat speaker wire (18g :() as this would be the only way to seemlessly wire my back surrounds (for DTS-ES/DD-EX), ouch! around 50 bucks for 30 feet at BB. Gonna do the wiring next week, I can see it taking many hours :(.

Speaking of new film releases, here's my review for "Requiem For A Dream":

Finally this film shows up in Atlanta! It was raining today, and the only theater that's showing it was inside the perimeter about 20 miles away. I was so psyched to see this film, thus, I made the trek anyhow. It's not only rainy, it's cold as hell. I finally get to the little neighborhood artsy-fartsy theater (the Lefont Garden Hills Cinema) and park a block away in the shopping center's parking lot across the street.

As many have alluded to, this is a film study of addiction (while drug and food addiction are the main focus for this film, these addictions are metaphorical, and can be applied to any form of deep addiction). It was like watching a director peeling an apple's skin all the way while keeping the skin intact until the very end. The director's vision just drives and drives this film forward at mind-numbing velocity with such naked ferociousness.

Darren Aronofsky, the director, in his sophomore effort (first effort was "Pi"), delivers an amazing film that grabs you by the throat, and never lets go. Sure, it may relax its hold on you for just a few seconds here and there for you to gulp for a few gasps of breath, but your gaze will be tranfixed to the screen as you wonder where the film is going while knowing full well where it's going. That's good, solid, film making.

This film is powerful, raw, emotionally draining, passionate, paralyzing, intense, compelling, invigorating, frightening, mesmerizing, spontaneous, nervous, chilling, upfront, and emotionally honest. There are so many other adjectives that I could use, but I left my thesaurus at work. It's a strong film, and has all the hallmarks of an important film.

The cast of Ellen Burstyn (Sara), Jarod Leto (Harry - Sarah's son), Marlon Wayans (Tyron - Harry's drug bud), and Jennifer Connelly (Harry's girlfriend) is excellent, and give such delicate and yet powerful performances of this cautionary tale of addiction. Burstyn's performance is just flat out incredible.

I was wondering while I was watching Jennifer Connelly in this movie, "Why did they cast such a beautiful woman for this role?" and then it hit me: Connelly's outer beauty is used to hide a deep and dark inner turmoil and self-loathing. The casting works in this respect - it's truly horrifying to watching something so beautiful go down a road of self-destruction in this film.

There are many parallel and underlying themes of addiction, love, sacrifice, self-respect, and self-image in this film, and I won't spoil the fun for those who should see an uncompromising look into all of them. If you can handle an honest look into this subject matter, you'll be rewarded with experiencing a very powerful movie that will stay in you head for days to come. Its message is so relevant in our daily lives, that it scares me even now as I type this review.

As I was leaving the theater, into the cold (for it had stopped raining), I walked a block back to the parking lot. I was shuddering and shivering. I kept telling myself that it was due to the weather, but honestly, inside, I know it was also due in part to this film's potency.

I give it a grade of A, or 4 out of 4 stars.

Bing, thanks for the kind words. As I was driving home, I was wondering how I would write a review (without just being a synopsis - I hate reviews like that) that would inspire others to seek out to see this film at a theater with a lot of other people, rather that sitting at home all alone. The collective experience of sitting with a room full of people watching this film experience cannot be duplicated in your HT. You don't get the nervous giggles, the ooh's, the ah's, the gasp's in your HT. But bear in mind, it's really grueling in spots, and if you really don't want this experience, don't seek it out. If my review was unclear about this part, well, you have now been warned. :D

I've amended and added my grade for the film at the end of the review.

WAZUP??

Andrew, sorry to blow your bubble relating to the Sony 850 but it just didnt come close to the Pioneer 727 player.

How long is the special going on for at 800.com? I dont have any preorders in for December. Can I wait until tomorrow? Sounds like everybody is getting in on one hell of a deal!

Do you write reviews for a living? Well............you should!!! Two thumbs up for that review. :)

My wife had me out X-mas shopping today. :( Bought some new appliances for the kitchen. Just going to settle in for the night and watch the X files later.

Hola Kids,

Here's some more Florida humor, because you just can't get enough these days ;)

An Open Letter from Florida to the rest of the country:
OK, here's the deal. We here in Florida have all gotten together and decided to hold the rest of the country hostage with these here election results until you come and take your parents back home with you!
That's right, we're tired of hearing how good it was back home and how beautiful their children are. We can't stand it any longer! And where did they learn to DRIVE?????
You want a president...WE want the speed limit over 20 mph.....Is it a deal?
We're running out of Depends down here and it's gonna get messy.
George W, you listening? How about you, Mr. Gore? Ya getting this?
We need a break. And quit sending the Canadians down here, too! We mean it, we're not lettin' the results out, we'll stall with lawsuits and claim ballot fraud. Anything until you come and take the old devils outta here!

Signed,
Greg B.
(PS I voted 1787 times, but I only used my real name 976 times, so I'll never get caught!)

Kind of lame, but I didn't have much to offer in the way of a REAL post ;) Here are some pics from today though, went to go see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at a dinner theater in Denver :) It was me, my brother-in-law Rico, Mandi, my sister, and my mom. You can see the picture here. Also featured is an older picture of Brendan and one I took today as well :) He's a cool little kid!
Have a funny story about a fight I got into in English class, but I'm too tired right now.

Ah what the hell, might as well:
Thursday in english class we were talking about our "position" papers, where we find a topic and take a position on it, providing information and data that supports our position. being the home theater geek I am I chose "DIY Speaker, "better" than manafactured?"
This hillbilly redneck went before me, talking about his position he was taking on "shooting ground hogs". It was silly as hell, and he's a damn redneck in the first place (you'd understand if you saw him, and heard how be butchers the english language...you know, double negatives up the wazoo, heh), but I didn't interrupt or let out so much as a smirk.
So we get to my position, and I explain how I want to show that if you have the means to build a pair of speakers, you can create something specific for your needs, and how it can be cheaper, yadda yadda yadda.
Well, hillbilly jim-bob (or whatever his name is) pipes up, rather loudly I may add. I'll try to recapture the conversation as it went:

Redneck: But I got me a set of Bose, I promise you will not be able to produce anything that comes close to them.
(I swear, that's EXACTLY what he said, word for word, I remember it quite clearly)

Me: What the fu...are you serious?
(PS, I didn't cuss, I just said "Fuh", I didn't actually pronounce the whole word, or it would have ended there I'm sure, heh)

Redneck: Do you know how much I paid for them? They're top of the line, most expensive they had!

Me: Lemme guess, Best Buy...

Teacher: Joey, I don't think that's a very appropriate thing to sa...

Me: And yes, I do know how much you paid for them, and it cracks me up to think that you actually forked over that much money for crap.

Teacher: Can we please not resort to profanity, I don't app...

Redneck: I've heard that Bose are top of the line though! And I listened to all of the speakers they had myself!

Me: You, being the top authority on what's hi-fi and what's not. (class laughs) Where did you find the time to shop for speakers between ground hog assasinations? (class laughs harder)

Redneck: ...

I stare at him.

Redneck: ...

Teacher: Mr. Millison, if you continue I will have to ask you to leave.

Me: Hey, I didn't interrupt his little speech on killing rodents with a rifle, I'm just helping to support my position if nothing else.

Teacher: Can we just PLEASE get back to this?

Me: Sure (and then very quitely whisper so Mr. Redneck could hear...I COULDN'T rsist, and I was all fired up as it was, "all highs, no lows, must be Bose")

It was funny as hell, it felt like high school all over again. I thought for sure I'd get my ass kicked after class though, heh. Though I guess if I want to keep my 'A' average I better tone it down a tad, heh. I was just offended that some redneck was going to say he had an ultimate home theater with his best Buy bought Bose. If nothing else, it was on behalf of all of the HT people who have taste, and a little knowledge on what's truly crap and what's not ;)
I also made an ass out of myself today at the dinner theater. This table next to us was talking, and talking, and talking. If you're anything like me you can't take it when someone talks during a play, or movie, so I turned and DIRECTLY into his ear and went, "SSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" as loud and obnoxiously as I could, heh, he was PISSED. But he didn't talk after that. Especially since most of the cast turned to see what was going on ;) it was a small theater though, so no biggie. It was to the point where he had pissed off my MOM even, and she NEVER gets pissed anymore.
Anyhow, I'm tired, so I gotta get some sleep. night kids!

Tyler ;)

Great story, Joey! Something to add to your web page! :)

I think it actually reads "NO highs, no lows, must be Bose!" After all, they don't put tweeters in those cubes either. I think I told you about the Bose Lifestyle promotional video I got in the mail. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I'll post a review when I do! :B

My wife and I did something last night that would send shivers up the spine of many Home Theater addicts. We were bored, and Heather picked up the Pronto, put the TV on and started flipping channels. We ended up watching Father of the Bride II on TBS, in pan & scan, cut up by commercials through the TV speakers. And what's scary, is we enjoyed the movie! No Dolby Digital 5.1. No OAR. Snowy cable picture. Washed out colors. Obnoxious commercials every 10 minutes. But it was still a fun movie. Sometimes it's nice to take a break from the full blown HT experience, and what the heck, it makes you appreciate the advantages of DVD even more after you've watched a few flicks on crappy cable. :)

Well, that's it for now... I have to head off to a meeting...yeah yeah, the reason we don't have flying cars or world peace yet...

Help me guys... I've been experiencing a bad case of "toy lust" recently. At first I was looking toward the Sony MDS-JB930 or 940 MiniDisc deck, but they're a bit hard to come by these days (930 is discontinued and the 940 isn't really out yet), so I can't cure my lust with a new MD deck. I'll wait until early next year to snap up one of those.

Next I turn my longing eyes toward the Pioneer DV-37. Nice unit, but I'm trying to hold off on getting a progressive DVD to see if one with 4:3->16:9 scaling comes out. Then the ultimate drool toy comes out... the Sony DVP-S9000ES. I have to restrain myself from ordering one of these. It doesn't scale, and from what I hear it won't play CD-Rs, but oh what a DVD player, and what a CD player, and SACD to boot! And it has that look and feel, I just want to touch those buttons! :B

But no, I shouldn't. I almost feel like I'm being unfaithful in my marriage to be longing after this DVD player. After all, what would Heather say if I dropped $1500 (or about $1100 with some shopping around) on a DVD player, when I already have one?? And of course, with my luck, if I bought one, someone would come out with one with scaling two weeks later. Just like when I order a LD of a movie that doesn't appear to be coming out on DVD any time soon, and the next thing you know it's announced on DVD.

Help me before I pull out the credit...er... debit card... ;)

RickS/GregS, thanks for the compliment. I've been seeing so many new releases, I thought it'd be fun to throw in my 2 bits, and when I see something really powerful, I thought it was up to me to spread the word and convince the right audience to go check it out. It also get me to put on my critical thinking cap and give a review that will entice, but not spoil the film-going experience for those who do see the films. I hope I have succeed somewhat in my objective.

Also noticed on DVDTalk that you went on a pre-ordering frenzy... I see you finally picked up Pi. Nothing like an inspiring movie to help in picking up other films by the same director/actor. I thought Pi was well done, very raw but showed the kind of talent that obviously came through in RFAD, very cool camerawork and emotive acting by Gullette (what ever happened to this guy anyway?).

What I did over the weekend, by ...

My weekend highlights. Went to watch Charlies Angels. First theater we were going to had a little notice by the ticket machine, something about receiving a bad print and that the sound was off in some places. So I call up my friends and say, lets find another theater! I'm not paying good money to hear crap sound, even though I'm not expecting much to begin with. We find a Silvercity, one of the new megaplexes, showing and meet there. Movie wise, we enjoyed ourselves. Lots of eye candy and action. Funny how the girls thought it was a good girl movie, I guess with the Angels kicking but, and the guys thought it was a good guy movie, with the Angels looking good and kicking but. :) I was also pretty impressed with the sound as well, some nice effects and some surprisingly good bass. I think I may have to buy the dvd when it comes out.

Had some chinese for dinner and I love it when my friends comment on how good my system sounds. :) We then went and played a boardgame for like the next 6 hours! :) Well it was 3 complet games, with 3 differnt winners, and I was one of the winners. :)

Sunday was time to sleep in! Ended up watching the BC Lions destroy the Calgary Stampeders! I heard that the Vegas line was Stamps over the Lions by 9.5 points. I would have taken that bet!

I see lots of activity over the weekend, I'll have to catch up.

Kevin, the 9000 dosn't scale? I didn't know that, though it should not be an issue for my XBR set or any one with a 16x9 right? It's only an issue for those with a 16x9 TV that locks you out of the zoom or 4x3 modes (that you would use to watch non-anamorphic dvds) in progressive scan. Examples include the Pioneer Elite and older Mitsubishi 16x9 sets. Those with Toshiba 16x9 or any 4x3 sets aren't affected. Watching anamorphic widescreen DVDs is fine. Watching 4x3 dvds results in the image stretched horizontally. There are a few workarounds:

* Switch to interlaced mode and then use your 16x9 TV's zoom or 4x3 modes. This basically rules out progressive scan for anything but anamorphic dvds
* For 4x3 formatted DVDs (such as The Wizard Of Oz), the Toshiba 6200 and Sony 9000ES have a windowboxing mode which displays the 4x3 image in a 16x9 frame by adding bars on the sides. For 4:3 letterboxed dvds, however, you wind up with bars on all four sides of the screen and a small image in the middle.
* Vertically zoom (scale) the 4x3 letterboxed dvd to properly fill the 16x9 display. Currently no progressive DVD player offers this feature. If one did, I'd be buying it.

This lack of a scaling feature is not an issue for those:

* with a 4:3 display
* with a 16:9 display that retains use of the 4:3 and zoom modes in progressive mode (Toshiba and newer Mits sets)
* if you only watch anamorphic dvds

Andrew, I'm glad you'll still have me, even if I don't have the chimpokoman 2000 vibrating oscilating tactile tranducing remote. :) I caught the bug long time ago, and it pretty much solidified when I made a trip down to the states and actually held on in my hand. Jesh, imagine how hard it was to put it back on the table! I'm betting on more deals happening down the road.

Joey, you and UPS just do not go well together. So did you ever get your package? Nice story, I'm glad you stood up to that redneck. Bose, well I've seen a knock off at Costco for about C$300, it basically looks exactly like the Bose system, and I bet sounds the same as well. And you know everybody down the chain is making some margin, so it makes you think, excactly how much profit is in a Bose system?

Rick, so 3 pics of Prontos in one page. Pretty neat. My download spead at home. to slow. :( at work 1.17 Mbps on the 10 meg file. :)

Trev, I thought you couldn't get the 9200 in Canada? I remember reading somewhere that only the 6200 was available. I hope that's wrong. Good luck on your search. And nice flip Trev.

Jehan, yes I agree with last nights X-files. Had my wife really scared. :) Although I was surprised that Doggit pulled out the old newspaper article.

Bing: you are correct, in fact the Pioneer Elite and regular versions lock into full mode with a progressive signal. I currently have the Toshiba SD-6200 which a) frames 4x3 material correctly with black bars so it can be viewed in 480p, b) allows switching between the interlaced and progressive outputs via a button on the remote for non-enhanced discs.

From what I have read this is exactly what the new Sony and Tosh 9200 do in regard to this issue, so picking one up did not seem that attractive to me at this point. Perhaps when a player comes out that can do a better job in scaling non-enhanced discs I will upgrade. Both the units I mentioned above do look damn sexy though :).

Good morning everybody!!

My TV is supposed to be delivered either today or tomorrow - just in time for all the football games on Thursday!! Delivery depends when the truck can come in from Boston.

As a bonus for waiting the dealer even threw in the following DVDs: T2 Ultimate, Fantasia Anthology, Armageddon Criterion, Bridge of the River Kwai (he says he already has it in stock), Pitch Black, North by northwest, and the Sound of Music. 2 big thumbs up for the dealer!!!

On another note, Heather called me from work yesterday morning. My dog / friend of 6 years was hit by a car. I came home (about a 3 minute drive) and Brownie was just hanging on. I stopped a passerby who had a gun in a gunrack (hunting season up here) and he put Brownie down. Then we had to bury her. Heather was crying all day, and the kids kind of turned the whole thing into a little bit of a game as they are too young to understand. The whole thing really hit home with me when I was tucking Matthew into bed and he was asking about Brownie (for the umphteenth time). I told Matthew that Brownie was in doggie heaven and he then asked "who will be taking care of her when it thunders? you do know that Brownie is scared of thunder". I then broke down. Argh! Thanks for listening!

Hope everybody was a great Tuesday! And my day can only be better than yesterday (especially if they deliver the TV!) :)

Gregg, sorry to hear about Brownie. But sounds like good news on your set. I'd volunteer, but you'd have to fly me down. :) There's a funny commercial running locally, wish I could capture it, but I'll do my best to describe it:

Scene: suburbia, music from an ice cream truck is playing in the back ground, shot is focused on a little girl with pig tails sipping her drink. The next shot is looking from behind the girl, we see she's on a sidewalk by a driveway, on the driveway there's a parked minivan. The music increases in volume and we see the ice cream truck roll by. The next shot is of the house where the van is parked, the little girl is still there sipping her drink, we see the van and a big TV box and a man flat on his back, he is not moving. Final shot, 'Have it Delivered, Buy from the Brick' Or something like that. :)

Greg, I did catch the 20/20. Interesting how jurys work.

Bing, In Vancouver, there are tons of places to go for Chinese! My wife does all the ordering, but I'll try and give you a rundown. We've got a couple of Wun Tun houses we go to for some fast Wun Tun noodles and Congee. If you ever fly in, there's a 24 hr place called #9 it's out in Richmond right in Ladsdowne mall. Good all around eats, cash only. Last Saturday we went to Hon's, it's like a greasy spoon. They've got a great deal, $24 for 4 dishes, plus potsitckers, and a congee! There's a Tawaneese place we goto as well, we have the meat rice and some brisket noodles and fried fish cakes. My uncle runs a great Shanghainese restaurant, small soup dumplings, onion cakes, chow neen go, sui long pao, and chi fan. For fancier meals, theres Imperial which is down by the waterfront, an expensive restaurant, but excellent Dim Sum and dinner meals. There are so many excellent places to eat out here I'm just getting hungry talking about it. :)

Paul - I found the 20/20 interesting too. For those of you who missed it, there is a guy who was charged with murder for killing his wife. He claims she shot herself, and no one else was home. He also happens to be a defense attorney, having an affair with a local judge.

The parts that really interested me were:

They had just found out they were pregnant with their second child. I think she was one month a long.

This of course interfered with his affair as he was telling the judge he was not having sex with his wife anymore, just living there in the same house.

They scheduled a congratulatory party friday night of the week they found out she was pregnant for both familes/inlaws to attend. At this party, the guy on trial asked his inlaws to watch their daughter the next afternoon. He had scheduled some practice time at the lcoal gun range for his wife to learn to shoot their pistol, which she had never shot before.

The next day, they go to the range, she fires a couple of times, and he decides to leave the range early, head home and take advantage of no one being home. He claims he went to the bathroom, and his wife sat down on the bed and shot herself in the head.

It is interesting as now he can support this claim as she had gunpowder marks on her hands from being at the gun range earlier.

He calls 911 and goes through the story of what happened, and every time the 911 operator asked a question, such as "Is she breathing?" he would just say something like "Honey, honey" and "Why did you do this sweetheart?" He never used her name on the 911 call. Think about when someone you know is in a critical situation, do you call them pet names or by their real name? I always call my boys by their first names when they get choked up or something when eating, never their pet names. The jury did not like this, plus it sounded like he was building his defense on the 911 tape.

The jury convicted him of second degree murder, and he obviously still claims he is innocent. The most damning part of his trial was the 911 tape, which the prosecution was actually trying to not have it played in the trial. But the defense team thought it was a slam duck for an acquittal, and played it. Funny how some things work out.

Ok, long enough post from me. :)

We just want the record to show there is shameless post padding here by the admins, they're bent as hell ;)

So I have been calibrating my sub with the FBD for the last couple of days. You know what I have come to realize???? Flat is boring!!!

I mean, sure it sounds nice, smooth and all but there is no emotion, no boom, no slam. And you know what is the kicker? I didn't need the FBD to get the sub flat, it was pretty much there to begin with as selecting EQ in or out doesn't make much difference.

I had to get the FBD to make my sub boomy... Woo-Hoo!

I have it flat from 20 to 75Hz, with in +2/-1dB in 1Hz steps, the parametric is great for this as I have 7 filters set to a band width of 1/3 octaves, and the other 5 at 1/40 octaves for the spikes and dips. This puppy is ruler flat, and I'm bored. Good thing I can save this as a reference program, for that allows me to run another program using my ears and butt as a guide. So what if it has peaks and dips, at least it will have character. :)

Note, don't run low end test tones for more than 2 hours @ 80dB, your hearing is shot for the night, forget about demoing the system. maybe that's why it sounds so dull and flattened out. I'll do listening tests tomorrow, once my head and ears have had a chance to re-boot :B

I also watched Chicken Run with my three sons! Excellent movie for the family, I didn't find the surround that good myself, I was expecting better with the DTS-ES. The video quality was excellent and the story very entertaining. I bought all three movies today and am looking forward to "Gladiator" tommorow night.

Bing,

So, are you saying that you would rather have your movies and music kick you in the ass? :) Would you have bought the FBD if you had known what you know now?

BTW, I'll have to stop in toon town if there's a good Dimm Sum place. :)

Rick, Yes, I would have still bought this (He let me demo it first, I'll pay for it tomorrow) for that is what my sub has been needing. From the onset, my sub was very flat and certainly, after 5 days of mucking around, I have been reasurred of that.

What it does allow me to do now is boost the frequencies that do kick my butt when I want it to. It's nice to have for some songs and movies I really like to pump up the bass. Most times I like my sub to be nonexsistant for music, but there are those times. The FBD allows me this and lets me actually save up to 10 programs of custom EQ'ed files.

So far I have 4

1) Flat (sitting posistion) really doesn't differ from no EQ

2) Flat 1 meter, really doesn't differ from sitting posistion and no EQ

3)Slightly boosted for low shake, but flat from 30-75Hz, very nice for music for it continuously shakes the floor with out sounding boomy

4) Over boosted Action Movie mode :B You all know what this is about, picture frames, china cabinet, lamps, kitchen cuboards... :)

Need some more, like Dance... DiscO :oh:...etc

So weither a person really needs it is relative to what you want and need. I needed this :B

One side note, using a parameteric EQ is a whole different thought process than using a graphic EQ. It's a different school of process adjustment, My first thoughts are that it's not a handy as the sliders , but It is forcing me to learn and identify the frequencies, the more I use this the more I understand how it will respond. I played with the real time editing software (not connected yet) and it allows you to use the FBD like a graphic EQ as the interface mimics a GEQ. it even gives you phase plots on top of the GEQ. Full parametric control is retained as well using this interface. I just have to make the 50' midi cord and then it'll be like cooking with gas.

The Mandarin is pretty good for dimsum, though I have ate at some good ones in Calgary as well, if your ever in town, give me a call and we'll head out for eats.

Trev, that sounds like a classic combo, no doubt if it's been the fav, 10 years running :)
Nice word association/graphics Rick!
In one fell swoop you have added nicely to your DVD collection. Based on everyones comments, I'll have to go get Chiken run as well.

My father sent this to me this morning (we're going over to their house for Thanksgiving). Not sure where he got it, but now you see where I get my "witty" sense of humor from ;)

In case you were wondering,

Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. I'm telling you in advance, so don't act surprised. Since Ms. Stewart won't be coming, I've made a few small changes:

Our sidewalk will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After a trial run, it was decided that no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect.

Once inside, our guests will note that the entry hall is not decorated with the swags of Indian corn and fall foliage I had planned to make. Instead, I've gotten the kids involved in the decorating by having them track in colorful autumn leaves from the front yard. The mud was their idea.

The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork. Since this IS Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the plastic Peter Rabbit plate and the Santa napkins from last Christmas.

Our centerpiece will not be the tower of fresh fruit and flowers that I promised. Instead we will be displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper. The artist assures me it is a turkey.

We will be dining fashionably late. The children will entertain you while you wait. I'm sure they will be happy to share every choice comment I have made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims and the turkey hotline. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 5:00 a.m. upon discovering that the turkey was still hard enough to cut diamonds.

As accompaniment to the children's recital, I will play a recording of tribal drumming. If the children should mention that I don't own a recording of tribal drumming, or that tribal drumming sounds suspiciously like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, ignore them. They are lying.

We toyed with the idea of ringing a dainty silver bell to announce the start of our feast. In the end, we chose to keep our traditional method. We've also decided against a formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like.

In the spirit of harmony, we will ask the children to sit at a separate table. In a separate room. Next door.

Now, I know you have all seen pictures of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. This will not be happening at our dinner. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in a private ceremony. I stress "private" meaning: Do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children to check on my progress. I have an electric knife. The turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win. When I do, we will eat.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind my young diners that "passing the rolls" is not a football play. Nor is it a request to bean your sister in the head with warm tasty bread. Oh, and one reminder for the adults: For the duration of the meal, and especially while in the presence of your diners, we will refer to the giblet gravy by its lesser-known name: Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or type of Cheese Sauce, plead ignorance. Cheese Sauce stains.

Before I forget, there is one last change. Instead of offering a choice between 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and small fingerprints. You will still have a choice; take it or leave it.

Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. She probably won't come next year either. I am thankful.

Happy Birthday GREG! Presents today...big feast tomorrow...Pronto on its way...life is good, eh? ;)

Bing, great comments about the flipping ;) It's too bad they don't appreciate a good flip as much as we do around here!

Gotta run...Have a great Thanksgiving everyone :)

Trev, Chicken Run is a sure thing. Ah, real chinese food! :) An inside joke between my wife and myself. Sound like stuff I order as well.

Man, I'm going to have to watch that again! :) Shower, shower, shower! Nice flip, but I bet it didn't feel as good seeing as nobody else was around.

Here's my review for Unbreakable. Do not read the spoiler stuff until after you see the movie (unless you aren't going to see the movie, then it would still behoove you not to read the spoiler atuff so that you won't spoil it for others who will go see it - sort of a paradox, eh?)

Ah, where to start. One of the big problems with reviewing Unbreakable is that you want others to experience what you have while not knowing much about the movie, I call it "The Sixth Sense" syndrome, where the less you know about the movie, the better for the final resolution to have whatever impact it will have on the viewer. So...I'll use some spoiler protection, and get on with a general overview:

From the trailers, you have Bruce Willis playing a man, David Dunn, who seems to be impervious to harm after being the sole survivor of a train wreck, and you have Samuel L. Jackson playing a man, Elijah, who wonders why this is the way it is. That's about all I knew going into the film, and for that, I'm grateful because I liked watching this film unfold, albeit at the same awkward pace of "The Sixth Sense", and yet come to a conclusion that invigorates the viewer as they leave the theater. You'll want to see it twice (almost just like those who did so with "The Sixth Sense".) In fact, I know I'll see it again with friends (who will have the weekend off - I saw it today because I have this whole week off - lucky me).

Okay, now for the spoilers:

Spoiler:

My confession: I'm a life-long comics reader, so for me, I can safely say this was one of the best "Comic Book" films that has made it to the silver screen in the last 20 years. I didn't know what to make of this film as I was watching it, but I had an inkling of what was going on halfway through the film, and while a bit plodding, the film moves at a "realistic" pace of revelation. It's a super-hero film done right. It's an everyday look at how a hero comes to the realization that he does have these powers, and how the expression of heroics not only define him, but give him purpose. This film is rooted in reality so firmly, and yet allows for the super-naturally gifted hero to be integrated into this world seamlessly.

I am so glad I didn't know about the comic book angle because its internal logic would have clued me in faster, but once the movie concluded, it all makes terrible sense. Now that I know the rules of the movie, it'll be fun to watch it once again.

I'm a bit miffed that I can't say to a fellow comic book fan that they should see this film because it has comic book roots, so I'll have to lie, and just push the movie trailer more, and let them see a really cool look at how a man becomes a man with purpose upon discovering his full potential and breaks the shackles of self-sacrifice for the greater good to become a hero.

Like M. Night Shyamalan's last effort, the less you know the better. It's what makes some of the revelations more suspenseful and intriguing. Pay attention.

I give it a grade of A- or 3.75 out of 4 stars.

PaulW, to find out how I did the spoiler tag, just do an edit on my post with the spoiler tag and cut/paste the beginning and ending tags to get the spoiler tags in place. It's kinda cludgy, but it works.

Unbreakable is a hit-or-miss film, some will think it lame, others like me will like it due to the content and how it's presented. I'll say this at the risk of a spoiler: if you read comics growing up, I think you'll enjoy this movie. If not, you will most likely think it lame or hokey.

Been too bizzy lately treating the server, just to comment on the speed issues raised earlier (a few flips back :) )
I had to send the server to the doctor but forgott to check the darn name sign on that guy. Didn't realize that his name was Watson before it was too late... Sheeeez, Windows NT is a frikkin virus :) so it was a Dr Watson error hanging there giving the server an extreme load. Hopefully we're back to normal again on the road to 4000 :B

Greg,

Very nice flip-n-snipe!!!http://www.ttlb.com/gifanimators/handok.gif Jeff was on one hellava dash there. :) The Pronto seemed difficult at first, but when you get into it for about three solid 8hr shifts, you will look back and, think it wasn't that bad!! :) I do agree it would be nice if you could open a couple of versions and cut and paste. What I did a first was to find the ccf's of the equipment that I owned and dowload that persons whole ccf, find your component and delete everything else then save the ccf as eg. "Sony 7700". Then merge everything together. This was the quick way at first but then Andrew and Bing told me to make "IR Code" page for each component. This in the long run makes things cleaner and easier for editing.

Paul,

Did you order a Pronto on that deal? ;) Your going to have the laptop to program it anyway. :)

RickS

Greg,

When you set up an "IR" page it is basically used to "alias" to designed buttons.

Your "play" button for example on the DVD panel would be aliased to the play button on your DVD "IR Code" page so you have only programmed the play button once on your IR code page not three or four times for the play function on different panels. If you have three panel for your DVD player and have the play button on all three you still "alias" these to your IR code panel. Also, you'll notice brackets around the IR code panels. This hides the page when programmed to the remote.

Hope I'm making sense here!!

Greg, forgot to add, nice spinning Star Wars logo.

Rick, no I've held off on the Pronto deal. The laptop is going to my wife, so I'll have to schedule dvd time on it. I'm not allowed to clutter up the drive with my junk. If you could see my HD and my desktop, you'll know what she means. :)

I've got about another 20 min before I take my lunch. :( Waiting for calls and meetings to end is a real drag. I might head over to the university bookstore, they've got a Sony 24" 16x9 monitor hooked up to a fast Sony computer. I might pop in Titan AE to see how it looks. Then I've got to packup as I've got tomorrow off. I've got a meeting tonight that I don't really want to be at, but it counts towards my professional development points.

Trev, I dunno, Unbreakable is kinda slow, but I feel the conclusion rewards those who pay attention and get absorbed in the story. So it's not loud and loaded with lots of flashy quick cuts all over the place. Some might say it plods along, but I feel it is a fresh spin on its material. So if you see it, and don't like, don't say I didn't warn ya!

I will jump on this unless someone can convince me the Sony is the better choice..12 bit video..SACD vs DVD-audio..I have experience with Toshiba already and really like my 3108,,the downconversion is not an issue for me on the Tosh TN61x81 as it was on the Panasonic 32".

The video is the best I've ever seen from a consumer DVD player...albeit I've not seen a Meridian up close and personal, but I'd bet this would give it a run for the money.

The playback is so smooth and the 480P is so 3D I'm seriously considering sticking with this for DVD playback and relegating the HTPC to pure HDTV timeshifting(using the Hi-Pix of course). It is really that good and I'm very surprised to say the least.

The one problem I'm having with video is that I have 3-4% overscan and its driving me insane. I think it is my projector and will spend more time over the long weekend pinpointing this. But there are some movies that look stretched too wide. I'm pretty sure its my Sharp doing this and not the 9000ES.

Still loving the DACs in the 9000ES. Very nice indeed.

Tom

Just got the following over ICQ just a little while ago :)

BEDTIME PRAYER (for women)

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man, who's not a creep.
One who's handsome, smart and strong.
He's not afraid to admit when he's wrong.
One who thinks before he speaks.
When he promises to call, he doesn't wait 6 weeks.
I pray that he is gainfully employed,
won't lose his cool when he's annoyed.
Pulls out my chair & opens my door,
massages my back & begs to do more.
Oh! Send me a man who will make love to my mind.
Knows just what to say when I ask "How fat is my behind?"
One who'll make love till my body's a twitchin'
He brings ME a sandwich too, when he goes to the kitchen!
I pray that this man will love me to no end,
And would never compare me with my best girlfriend.
Thank You in advance and now I'll just wait,
for I know You will send him before it's too late.
Amen

BEDTIME PRAYER (for men)

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray for a woman, who's very cheap.
One who's sexy, blonde and long.
Who notices that she's mostly wrong.
One who sucks And doesn't speak.
And promises to do so, Once a week.
I pray that she is very randy,
'cause one like that would come in handy.
Opens her leg and lies on the floor,
and once I'm done, she begs for more.
Oh! Send me a woman who will not play with my mind.
Who knows what she wants and that's lots from behind!
One who'll make love till my body's a twitchin'
and brings ME a beer, when she comes from the kitchen!
I pray that she'll last right up to the end,
And would never complain when I do her best friend.
Thanks in advance and you know I can't wait,
so I'll screw all the rest 'cause it's never too late.
Amen

:B

Hello Gang!

Way to Go Trev.. The upgrade king is in da house! :B

It will be interesting to see how the DVDaudio/SACD pans out.

Well I had a fellow coworker ask me about buying tips for a DVD player today. It's tough to recommend something when all he has is a 21" with no composite input, and he wants something cheap, that he can upgrade from later. Yet he still wants quality... Recommendations? Maybe I should point him towards the player Trev just bought or the ES9k :B

Nice Snipe Greg, very nicely done. It was like Hal2000 shuting down Dave.... :)

Man I been busy at work.

Well, I took my first plunge into a goal I have for nexy year, buying a car. After a few conversations with a few knowledgable people I trotted over to the Honda lot...and then the Saturn lot...and then...the Volkswagen lot. That's where I saw her, my new car that I will purchase next year. A 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX.
I've driven a lot of new cars, except for these new Volkswagens, and let me say, they've come a LONG way since the original VW Bug! This Jetta had a V6 engine in it that was more than enough power. I seriously felt as though I were in a BMW or something, as it wasn't what I though of when Volkswagen came to mind. This was an insanely awesome car, to say the least.
It was responsive as all hell. We even took it out to the foothills where there are some pretty dang steep climbs, and it FLEW up them. There's one hill in particular that I've gone up MANY times, in many cars. And I have NEVER driven up it and been able to hold a steady speed. It's just too long and too steep. Your speed slowly dies by the time you reach the top. But the Jetta climbed up, and was able to accelerate extremely quickly as well. It was practically laughing at the slope, and we flew up it in record time.
Man, I can't tell you how impressed I am with this car. It had leather interior, heated seats, self dimming rear view mirror, heated side rear view mirrors (all the heated stuff is part of a standard cold weather package), climate control (it was SWEET, that's one of my favorite features...you set it on 69 degrees and by god it stays 69 degrees regardless of the temp outside), power sunroof, multifunction trip computer, power seats, folding ignition key with remote transmitter, rain sensor (automatic wiper control), etc... Seriously, have you seen how many standard features come with even the Jetta GL?
I was extremely impressed. I want a white one with gray leather interior! We tried to find one that was exactly what I wanted, but couldn't, so we had to take a white one with beige leather out for a spin. Close rnough though, and it felt like I was on top of the world. It's a car you could be proud to drive! I can put it into words like this: I felt as though I were looking at cars I couldn't afford and shouldn't be looking at. The ones that cost $40k +, but with a $20k sticker. I can't wait!
So there was my day, and now I have to look into several options for how I can do this. I'd like to buy it for my birthday for myself. That would be absolutely killer! :)
Oh, and I went with Mandi this morning to pick out washers and dryers since the new house has everythin BUT them, and we got a killer deal :) And of course, since they're both going to be downstairs near the HT room we got the ULTRA-FREAKING-QUIET ones. You know, the ones that have Stealth-Ninja-on-Crack mode where you can't hear it at all ;) Last thing I want to do is be watching Star Wars and hear a constant sloshing in the background ;)
Anyhow, just wanted to share my day with everyone, as it was an eventful one! Oh, and Mandi and I are both sick today as of this morning. I hope the Volkswagen salesman who let me take car out doesn't get sick as well!

Hasta!

Holy @(*#, the scene at Best Buy and CC this morning was utter chaos... people running around everywhere, lines miles long - all the goodness and love we have come to expect from post-thanksgiving sales :). Gave me a headache just wondering around in there. Of course there was the usual, hey this has black bars? get the sales guy and ask him for a 'proper' version :).

Those are very nice cars Joey. I have sold cars before and I know cars. They are good, solidly built, but expensive.

Comparison to a BMW sedan is not uncommon. Great car! If I didn't drive a BMW 328I Convertible already, I would probably jump on one!

Joey those are nice cars but I would never buy a brand new car, you loose to much when you take it off the lot. buy one thats one or two years old and you'll be further ahead in the long run....nice cars though aren't they:) If they'd been in our price range last year when we bought the contour i would have glady bought one

After waiting all day, the telephone guy finally came to install our new line.

While I was waiting, I watched a whole bunch of Junkyard Mechanics. Awsome Brit show where teams compete in making contraptions out of junkyard parts. A cannon, wheeless walkers, pretty increadible stuff.

Also watched Titan AE. What bass! It's a great movie, and I'm sorry I missed it in the theaters, my 27" just doesn't do it justice. But that bass. Crap I need a bigger sub! Did I mention it had great bass? Unfortunately my dvd arrived with it out of the spindle so I had some scratches on it, it locks up at one scene, but I can easisly FF and rew and the scene plays fine. Also the subtitles don't work till after that scene. I'll probably see if I can get an exchange at one of the stores. It was a gift, eh. Did I mention the that the bass was out of this world?

Joey, those Jetta's are excellent, you can also save some bucks if you went with the 1.8l Turbo engine. Thats the same engine from the Audi A4. You can modify that engine so it puts out even more hp than the VR6 you drove. That might be improtant as you live at altitude. Also, if you can get a previous years model, you'll save tons of money. Also don't forget to check the net for the best barganing strategies. I was looking at the Golf early this year, and I had heard a rumor that the Turbo engine was coming to the Golf and Jetta's. I asked the sales person, and they only said, maybe and it would only be in the GTI. Well if I had just waited 3 months, I could've got my little turbo hatchback, instead I got the Honda. Anyway, hope you had a great thanksgiving.

I've been thinking about the car thing, and what everyone here is saying...would leasing be an option possibly? I only hesitate to buy a used car because I want to get something nice, but don't want something that feels "used", or that doesn't have any options, as I've ALWAYS had used crappy cars in the past. What are people's thoughts on it? :)

PS: Thanksgiving pics are up here. I especially like "Thanksgiving (p7)", which is a picture of my nephew and I having story time :) That one's going to be a keeper :) But I put up 13 out of the 20 pics I took in case you guys wanted to see them. The picture titled "Thanksgiving (p5)" features (from left to right): My brother Steve, Mandi, my father, my mother, me, my sister Denise, my nephew Brendan, and my brother-in-law Rico. My other sister Stephanie and her family couldn't join us, so it was a smaller get together :)

Hey Joey, I was wondering where you have been. Steer away from leasing. Buy what you can afford, and you will be much happier. I learned the hard way by leasing a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee in 1996, that I could not have afforded to out right buy in '96, and was so damn happy when I gave it back to them at the start of this year. It was great for about two years, then I wanted out, but couldn't. And when warranty runs out on something, you have to fix it just like it was yours.

Texas also has a "royalty tax" on leased vehicles I didn't know about, so each year I got a $1000 tax bill from the State of Texas. You also have to maintain a higher liability level on your insurance, which is just more and more out of pocket, for what I though was going to be a pretty good monthly payment. And of course, all routine maintenance and tire wear comes out of pocket. If this doesn't convince you, call me, I can promise you will not want to lease after you hear some of the details!

Jehan - I stayed away from the shopping today, can't stand that many people in a spending frenzy. Instead poured a lot of time into this Pronto of mine. :)

Trev - congrats on the new toyz! You truly are the upgrade king!

Bing, the Tosh SD1200 I have is a great beginner DVD, around $220 or so, sometimes $200 and cheaper on the net, and I love mine. Available at your local BB! ;)

Paul - you really need a Pronto, even more than a new sub! ;)

Joey - Yahoo is asking me for a password on those pictures?

Gregg:
I have a medical question...Mandi has had a migrane all day. Then she got a bloody nose and her headache went away completely. Is this a bad thing? Anyone else know as well?

Greg:
Try to refresh the pictures and try again? I think I had the wrong permissions on them, should be okay now :)
Hmmm, so no-go on leasing ;) I was just told it sucks because if you buy the car and don't want it you have the ability to sell it, but if you lease you're kind of screwed. So leasing is sounding less appealing as I read more about it. Mandi and I are trying to see how fast we can get everything paid off to buy the car. We shall see. All I know is I love that car, it's wonderful, so I'd like to at least give it a shot.

Is there a general rule on how much you can afford? Like "never buy a car that's more than you make in a year" or is it more about being able to just afford the payments themselves? Just trying to see if this car is too much for me or not. Any good rules of thumb? :)

Greg Stone
11-25-2000, 12:01 AM
Joey, I don't have any rules of thumb, I think you have to look at what the monthly payments are going to be, not at sticker price. If you get a great sticker price, but cannot afford the monthly payments, you're screwed.

If I had to guess, I would say don't buy a car that costs more than half of your annual salary. I know that will get some laughs, but I own an S10 clear and am not looking forward to payments again anytime soon. Another reason I stay away from the car lots, as I get upgrade-itis! I wish you well on getting the car you want at the price you can afford - Good luck! :)

P.S. still can't get to those pictures, but I am probably doing something wrong here on my end...
