Greg,,I have used my Avia disc many times to calibrate the audio levels..everytime you move your speakers you need to do this and I have done this often in the past. Since you are calibrating your levels to reference for DVD playback,,the Avia DVD will give you more accurate calibration signals since you are using the same source equipment(The DVD Player) that you use to playback your DVD's. Using the test tones from the receiver will not give you the same results.

The Avia disc and Sound meter are two important peices to a HT set-up.

Greg,
I have used my Avia disc numerous times...more than I can remember.
If you really don't want to buy the disc then you could always use the THX Optimode that is on some of the newer DVD's. The ones that come to mind are Fight Club, Toy Story and Toy Story 2...I'm sure there are others too. If you decide to go that route then I think you will just need a dB meter and the blue filter. I remember reading somewhere that you can get blue filter glasses from the THX web site...I don't have time to check right now.
Hope that helps a little.

Good morning from the right coast. 10 pages this weekend? You guys are out of control! :)

This weekend's movie:
Rules Of Engagement (Samuel L. Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones) -- great audio and video but the plot is so full of holes it leaks like the SS Minnow -- still, definitely worth a rent.

Good Morning!

LB,
Nice flip!

I flush mounted a Middle Altantic Slim 5 rack in that wall to hold the equipment. The room is a furnace room.

Trevor,

The XV-Z1 projector has a native resolution of 640 x 480. If you drive it from a video scaler it will give you 480P. My brother owns that projector and I don't think you would be happy with it or would I recommend it to you. There are many better projectors out there for less money, and will give you at least 800x600 resolution. I'd look at some of the DLP unit's in that price range.

Also, if you want the best out of a FPTV you should think about driving it with a HTPC or through a video scaler for the best results. I drive my FPTV at the max res. of the panel 600P from a video processor for best results. If you want to resolve the full resolution of a normal DVD 480/540 your FPTV panel if the normal (4x3) would have to be a min 1024x768 projector. This would give you 1024x568 in 16x9 mode. If your looking at a FPTV I would recommend looking over here (http://www.avsforum.com/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi) there is some good info there. Oh yeah....I'm an old fart over there. :)

Greg,

Avia.......couldn't imagine not having it for setup. You will be surprised at the results after you use this tool for tweaking. :)

Andrew,

morning guys

Maggie 1.4's are indeed better then the MMGs. Everything the MMG's do well the 1.4's do a bit better. The sound stage is a lot wider due to the larger panel and its a taller image as well ie the singer is standing up tall in front of you not bent over. If you put the MMG's on stands I'm sure that they too would have a taller soundstage as well. The 1.4's with the longer and wider panel handels lower bass better too. its not just deeper but its less bloated. all in all they do sound better. BUT now here's the kicker the 1.4's current replacement is the 1.6's which cost $1400 US the MMGs go for $500 US I'm not sure I could justify 3 times the price if I were buying new providing that you built new stands for the MMG's so that they were taller.

I saw Bedazzled (okay, rental fare) and Legend of Drunken Master (really cool martial arts) this weekend.

Had a totally boring Sunday (but nice and relaxing).

Hope everyone is doing well today. And happy belated b-day to LB.

Howdy, must be a real busy Monday for everybody.

Weekend turned out pretty well. Saturday was erand day, did lots, including picking up The Ultimate Toy Box. On Sunday, I watched the VCD of Phatom Menance, sound was pretty good, I wasn't expecting too much, picture was poor. There were a number of skips in dialoge and pixelation problems. But since this was a gift, I can't complain. It was pretty cool just to watch. Oh yeah, it's in Pan and Scan. :P They were showing Tomorrow Never Dies on TV last night, so I played around with synching up the dvd with the show.

LB, I saw the T-Birds once back in the late 80's. and a http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net7/birthday.gif

Pl@ and Jehan, wanted to go see Drunken Master, but didn't make it, but I was watching the review on Ebert last night, and you know what, I've see this movie before when it first came out! I can't wait to go see this again.

21 SIGNS THAT YOU'VE HAD TOO MUCH OF THE 00'S

1. You try to enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards for years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You e-mail your buddy who works at the desk next to you to ask: "Do you wanna go get a Coke?"; and he replies: "Yeah, give me five mins"

5. You chat several times a day with a stranger from South America, but you haven't spoken to your next door neighbour yet this year.

6. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends is that they are not online.

7. Your idea of being organised is multiple coloured post-it notes.

8. You hear most of your jokes via email rather than in person.

9. When you go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business like manner.

10. When you make phone calls from home, you automatically dial a "9" to get an outside line.

11. Your resume' is on a diskette in your pocket.

12. You really get excited about a 1.7% pay increase.

13. You know exactly how many days you've got left until you retire.

14. Free food left over from meetings is your staple diet.

15. Being sick is defined as you can't walk or you're in the hospital.

16. You're already late on the assignment you just received.

17. Your relatives and friends describe your job as "works with computers".

18. You only have makeup for fluorescent lighting.

.......AND THE CLINCHERS ARE..........................

19. You read this entire list and you keep nodding and smiling.

20. As you read this list, you think about forwarding it to your E-MAIL BUDDIES.

21. It crosses your mind that your "jokes group" may have already seen this list but you don't have time to check so you forward it anyway.

I can relate to most of those Paul.. :)

I wasn't feeling well today so I called in sick and spent most of the day in bed. Hence my recent lack of posts.

Saturday my HT-nut-coworker-friend and I went to a friend of his to help them calibrate their HT. I did the ole' Avia thing and got it sounding great, and then I discovered how to get into service mode on their 5-year-old Hitachi Ultravision RPTV, and then I had a field day. I spent at least an hour, maybe two, getting the geometry and the convergence perfect-o. The image was sharp as a tack when I was finished, I think they were just as surprised as I was. I also did some basic Pronto setup for them--they didn't have Prontoedit handy.

We watched Rules of Engagement last night--a good movie with a great soundtrack. I had the 6.1 mode on the Outlaw switched on and there was loads of surround activity, including the center surround. And loads of bass, which is something a new SVS owner always appreciates! :)

See ya... KJP

New Proud owner of the prestigious and rare Titanic DTS LaserdiscI hear the soundtrack on this disc is top notch--too bad there is no DTS DVD of this flick--yet. It probably would have to be on two discs or a DVD-18 flipper though.

Being the Titanic freak that I am, the only reason I didn't snap up a DTS Titanic LD is because my LD player doesn't have the requisite digital output. I do have the DD LD, and the DVD (oh how I wish it were anamorphic!) And of course, the soundtrack CD is one of the best sounding CDs I own, and I always torture test new components, speakers, and subwoofers with this CD.

It's funny, the last time I watched Titanic was when the DVD came out, before I had new speakers, before I had a RPTV, before I had a sub... I think it's getting to be time to spin this disc again. Once we set the clocks back and it's getting dark at 5 there'll be time to watch 3+ hour movies again.

(Can you tell I'm feeling better today??) :)

Rick, I am finding the software much easier to use than PE 1.04.

? - Say you make 10 buttons on a screen and want to change the font on all of them. Is there an easy way to do that or do you have to do each button individually?

DEAL OF THE DAY:

http://www.us.buy.com/retail/DealOfTheDay.asp?sku=70001555&loc=273

This is one hell of a deal on a 12.6x22" printer. The price is 109.99 and it retails for $580. On top of this if you get the purchase up to $150 you can use a $30 off coupon. They are also offering free shipping.

I also got some CDRWs. I paid $44 for a 100 pack of TDKs that are 74 minutes each. Not sure if that is a great price?? - but I needed to add to my cart to get over the $150 mark.

Rick we can probably work something out if you're serious.

Gregg to my knowledge there isn't a quick way of doing that. You can quickly copy buttons from one to another without loosing the IR codes but I don't think that works for the fonts...let me check

Andrew Pratt
10-24-2000, 12:41 PM
Gregg yes and no. Using the Alt key you can copy icons and retain the original IR codes on the target button. If you use the Ctrl key you can clone buttons which will keep the fonts from the source. If all the buttons are the same the Ctrl function may be the best route.

Guys I was sitting listening to music last night and the 80's TTP CD's came on. Anyway that got me to thinking about what else I have that you might like to hear. Would anyone be interested in us starting a trading circle of CDR's with selections from our collection that we think others might like? I know I could put together a CD with a bunch of songs that you may or may not have heard before etc that I quite like. If you're interested we could each make one and send each other a copy and vise versa. We'd end up with a couple of new CD's with others favorite tunes on it and it might open us up to some new bands genera etc that we might other wise have missed....anyone interested? I guess we could each pick an MP3 of a few songs if we didn't want to go all out with the CDR's...anywho just tossing out idea's

Sorry to bring this thread to a screaming halt, but one of my good friends has a mother in the hospital, and they fear this is the final time, chances are extremely low that she'll leave there alive due to complications with cancer (lung/back). She's in a lot of pain when they took her back into the hospital this past Sunday. We knew this was coming, but when the moment is really nearly here, many important things come to the forefront, and alot of superfluous stuff recede to the background in a split second. I will try to do what I can for him and his family (never sure what's a good thing to do). He's also got an ailing father who's basically been in congestive heart failure for the past year, and his condition is not getting better either. I glad he's got his sister to lean on. I really don't know what would happen when my parents' time is up on this planet. I'm an only child, and ugghh, I really don't know what I'll do. Sorry to be a downer tonight, it's been a trying day.

Earlier today, my boss outlined a plan for 16 hour/day 7 days/week (from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.) coverage of all our servers (mainly the email system being the most important), and the upshot is that we'd get cable modem/DSL access paid for by the company ($40-$60/month). Each of the 4 guys in my department would be on call 1 week out of the month. But seeing how he wants 72 hours of additional coverage per week when it's someone's week to be on call, I stated my displeasure with this new turn of events and even had the gall to email him a link that has many different takes on this on-call support issue and compensation. Here's the link (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/10/17/1844229&mode=thread) that I sent him and copied my department. There's some funny stuff in that discussion. I just hate the idea of being tethered to our network on the weekend when I'm on call. It's not like I make a lot doing this in the first place, so why should I volunteer more of my time to this place? You can also make more money, but time is something you just can't buy back.

Before I found out the news of my friend's mother's condition, I was fuming over this "lack of substantial compensation" for on-call support at these levels, but now, it's not really that important to me. If this bothers me, it's up to me to find another line of work somewhere else. But at least I spoke up, and while I have the support of my peers, I have my suspicions they'll let me take the heat on this issue. So be it. It's not a life and death matter, so I will take a different view on work-related matters. This will probably be the last straw for me at this place. I think I will be actively searching for a new job in the coming months. Currently, I can't view a job as my life. And I refuse to have a job that impinges on my after-hours as much as this job is becoming to do so with this new development.

Now I know how Trevor was feeling waiting on news on whether his brother would pull through after his accident.

Never take it for granted to say "I love you" to your loved ones. You just never know if you get a final chance to do so with them.

Good night.

Pl@ - I'll send up some good thoughts for your friend and his parents tonight. I hope everything works out. Just let your friend know you are there for him, sometimes people just need to talk in situations like these, and they need to know a good friend is only a call away.

Also, sorry to hear about the work problems. I respect you for standing up and stating your opinions though. It is always easier to assume more work for no or little additional compensation than it is to say what you did. Good luck on this front as well.

Night all.

Patrick,,very sorry to hear about your close freinds Mom. Cancer is such a horrible disease and very tough to fight.Hopefully she can be strong and fight through it. My Dad was fortunate to survive this disease 5 years ago so there can always be hope. As the others said , sometimes there isn't too much that you can say ,,but being there for your freind is the best support that you can give.

My prayers go out to your freind and his Mom.

Good morning everybody!!

Pat, sorry to hear about your friend's mother. Illness is never a good thing and CA is always the worst. Just be there for them is the best advice I can give you. Dealing with death/dieing is by far the hardest part of my profession. It is never easy no matter how well you think you (or others) are prepared.

Bing: lets see some pictures!!

Im having a few people over on Friday night. The ISF calibrater is coming for 7 pm. Then we are cutting some sono tube caps on Saturday. Between this, and the LA meet in 12 days, Im pumped!

Have a great day everybody!(even you Pat, you'll just have to try a little harder :) )

Pl@, sorry to hear about your friends mother. I think just being a friend and being availiable is about all that you can do at the moment. Don't worry about downing out the thread, I think this is a good a place as any to post whatever's troubling you.

Andrew, I see that sunny Vancouver weather has made it out to you. :)

Recap of the B-ball game last night, Vancouver Grizzlies vs the Phoenix Suns. Final score Griz 75, Suns 88. I don't follow the game that much, but have seen a few games and I've seen games where our team can play much better. One glaring stat was shooting from the perimiter, that really sucked, was around 25% for most of the game. Air balls, bad rebounds, turnovers. Well on the bright side, court side seats, I was front row corner at the home basket, opposite of the players bench. Also had a closeup view of the Griz Extreame Dance team. :B Probably the funnest part was watching the half time game. It was a bunch of little tykes, I'd say ages 8-10. They were playing full court and the white jersey team won, 6 to 2. There was lots of chearing going on for these guys. Saw some fast breaks and steals and some good shooting. I think the Grizz could learn a thing or two.

I see another slow day on the thread.

Joey, you still out there? FYI, I just got another amazon GC from Echo, so they are coming just very slowly. Have you got any of yours yet?

Looks like our place has just been volunteered to be the jumping off point for some festivities on Sat. So that means I have to clean house. :p: I'm sure we'll have to watch a movie before we head out so I'm looking forward to demoing my system again.

Hey Guys, as requested, here are some photos. It does need a sanding as the veneer is au-natural.
I wanted a total black finish that would match my B&W's but I may settle for this semi black finish like the sample photo, tell me what you think. My favorite grain is in the lower horizontial trim piece. I would have liked to had it fiinshed for the weekend, but i'm preparing for my daughters halloween party

My friend's mother is now in a better place. She passed away a couple of hours ago. She actually got better yesterday, and they brought her home, but then today, it finally happened, and she's now at peace. Thanks for all your well wishes. It's better this way, as she was in a lot of pain and the prognosis for recovery was never good to begin with.

What I remember about her was her vibrancy when she was with us. Always greeted us (our circle of friends) with a big smile, and cared for all of us. I will miss her, and am kicking myself for not going by there last night.

This was sent to me from my wife. It's actually in a htm format, but I don't know how to post it up here, so I'm just including the plain text.

----

RESIGNATION
I am hereby officially tendering
my resignation as an adult. I have
decided I would like to accept the
responsibilities of an 8 year-old again.

I want to go to McDonald's and think
that it's a four star restaurant.

I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud
puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.

I want to think M&Ms are better than
money because you can eat them.

I want to lie under a big oak tree and
run a lemonade stand with my friends on
a hot summer's day.

I want to return to a time when life was
simple; When all you knew were colors,
multiplication tables, and nursery
rhymes, but that didn't bother you,
because you didn't know what you
didn't know and you didn't care.

All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of
all the things that should make you
worried or upset.

I want to think the world is fair.
That everyone is honest and good.

I want to believe that anything is
possible. I want to be oblivious
to the complexities of life and be
overly excited by the little things
again.

I want to live simple again. I
don't want my day to consist of
computer crashes, mountains of paperwork,
depressing news, how to survive more days
in the month than there is money in the
bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness,
and loss of loved ones.

I want to believe in the power of
smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth,
justice, peace, dreams, the imagination,
mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So . . . here's my checkbook
and my car-keys, my credit card bills
and my RRSP statements. I am officially
resigning from adulthood.

And if you want to discuss this
further, you'll have to catch me
first, cause........
......"Tag! You're it."

Pass this to someone and brighten
their day by helping them remember
the Simple things in Life.
((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))

Hope Ya'll join me !

Some of my friends and I visited my pal whose mother passed away, and we brought his family some food and flowers. He and his family were all putting up a good front, but I did detect some blubbering (he was his mother's number one son) but they seemed happy to see my other friend's little 2 year old daughter.

There's something about little children that makes us forget about our present troubles and predicament and reminds us of our hopes and dreams for the future. I think it did them a world of good to see their daughter.

It was weird, driving away and seeing my friend standing at the doorway waving back at us. If we could take away or share some of his and his family's pain, we'd gladly do so.

Ok I promised a review so here is an attempt at one :). Lex I am a little lost here, this probably doesn't fit here (but it is the TTP afterall so let's overlook that :)) but the Reviews section you have up seems more like a hardware section and the DVD Director section doesn't look like a place for reviews of discs either so feel free to move this.

---

Frequency: New Line Platinum Edition

--

I won't bother with a synopsis, I'll just get down to the disc which is what most of you will be interested in.

Misc. Impressions: Well from the packaging to the menus, they are all very stylish and certainly fit the theme of the movie. I love the simple circuit diagram based menus as well as the packaging and disc cover art (well snapper dislikes aside ). Very professional is how I would describe it.

Video: I think we should all add a new category for grading video - just put down New Line Platinum. That would suffice for describing A+ transfers the way these folks keep putting up gorgeous transfer after transfer. Reference or near quality, the 2.35:1 framed transfer is excellent, no grain to speak of - a very sharp and detailed picture. The one thing that stuck out while I was watching this was the black level, one of the best in recent memory.

4/4

Audio: Since the movie was primarily dialog based I didn't expect much from this track. The DD 5.1 track is quite surprisingly aggressive. In particular the opening sequence in space is excellent, the radio tunes mixed with the other ambient sounds were so good I listened to that chapter a couple of times. Add to this the opening action scene (those who have seen this movie will know what I am talking about) and you have fairly good HT demo. Very impressive bass (surprising to some extent) and decent use of surrounds. I will conceed that the whole movie isn't riddled with action sequences like U-571 but the audio is really very good here.

3.5/4

Extras: I have not gone through all of these so I will just touch on what I went through. Firstly, let me say hats off to New Line for taking such care with their supplements. The deleted scenes are enhanced for WS sets, which is very pleasing to see (also saves me the trouble of switching to interlaced and changing modes on my Elite 510 ). I found the 2nd commentary track (Emmerich brothers) a little dull (may revisit it later) but the first (Director Hoblit) is quite informative (conceptually) and I hope to listen to it completely sometime. In addition is the isolated score in 5.1 , can't stress how nice it is to have this on the disc. There is also a whole bunch of stuff focusing on the scientific side of the movie which folks may find interesting.

3.5/4

I know this was met with some mixed reviews at the box office, but I found the movie reasonably enjoyable and heck when New Line keeps on giving this kind of treatment to its premium movies who can resist?.

Seven anyone?

Patman...my condolences to you and your friends family.

Working too much here too...but not as bad as some others (16/7...yuk) :)

I stopped at my favorite HT store and they let me take an Anthem MCA2 home for the weekend...to see if I want to get the MCA3(none in stock). I have to say that the MCA2 knocks the socks off of my 12yr old amp that I currently have. I didn't change anything except the amps and there was a difference in the size of the soundstage, more detail, it is easier to pick out the different intruments. It even seems like the mids and highs actually have a stronger presence/impact. I think I am going to get the MCA3 to power the front 3 channels.

Hi Guys!!

I had a small HTF party last night. It was the WORST party ever!! The ISF tech was a kid and didnt know anything about my TV set. He didnt have a color analyzer either and told us his gray scale "comparator" was just as good. ARGH!!!

Anyway, my wife's grandmother died yesterday. She has been sick for a while and in a nursing home with Alzeimhers (sp?). Heather has not even seen her for years as my mother in law wanted the grand kids to remember Grammie the way she was and not the way she is now (did that make since?). I dont think anybody is really crying over her death but there are a lot of confused feelings and Heather is not good with feeling identification etc.

Short story is Heather is staying up in New Brunswick for another week or so for the funeral stuff then has her second dentist appointment. I wont be seeing her or the kids until I get back from LA. I miss hugging the kids (and doing something else with the wife :) )

Remember her dentist appointment stuff and the $1880 estimate? So we booked her care in Canada at her mother's dentist where he quoted $900 USD for the same work. At the first appointment he says she only needs the root canal (for $550 CDN) and nothing else. Heather and my wallet were very happy!

Bing, your sub looks awesome. Im still waiting on the drivers then Ill start building my new one.

Have a great weekend everybody!!

Gregg LLL - sorry to hear about your wife's grandmother. Good news on the dental side though.

All - went to see "Alaska - Call of the Wild" at the Fort Worth IMAX theater today. Very cool! Dang, that is truly a big screen!

GreggL, sorry to hear about the loss of your wife's grandmother. Looks like lots of condolences and positive thoughts are being pased around the HTG. Too bad you didn't get a good ISF tech to the party. That's pretty frustrating.

Andrew, didn't I say Legend of Drunken Master kicked some serious butt? I've heard that the finale took over 2 months to film. It's truly a martial arts tour de force.

BTW, anyone looking towards Frequency can buy it at Circuit City for $15 (I'm sure you can get it price-matched at other places if you show them the newspaper circular ad). I think I'll pick that one up (one of my very few retail DVD purchases - though I feel I'll be spending more dollars locally with the demise of easy online DVD bargains - I refuse to waste me time pointing/clicking/etc or jumping through hoops to get a deal on a DVD, my time's more valuable than that).

My goodness, the Georgia Tech/Clemson football game was a nail-biter to the very end with GT pulling out a win with a 16 yard TD with 7 seconds left from Godsey to Watkins. It was an 80 yard TD drive with under 2 minutes to play and Clemson went up by 4 points, so GT needed the TD for the win. The final score was 30-27 in GT's favor. Clemson falls from the ranks of the unbeaten and sure to fall a bit from its 7th place ranking in the polls.

Excellent college football game!

I spent today cleaning up the house. I vacuumed, and wiped down lots of surfaces, and cleaned up and organized and threw out tons of stuff littering the house. I moved stuff off the floor and found them a new home on bookshelves. I just filed all my utilities receipts away, and my credit card statements (whoa, how did I manage to order all those DVDs on company time? Heh). I still have some other stuff to tidy up - like my garage which need to be truly cleaned out. But it feels great to have a tidy house again!

I think tomorrow will be an exterior day - last lawn cut of the year (I hope) and some trimming of the bushes.

And the best part about cleaning up all my receipt: I found my receipt (for a crown earlier in the year) that I can use to get back $260 from my flex spending account. Woo Hoo!

Greg, sorry to hear about your Wife's Grandmother. Loss is difficult no matter if expected or not. Take good care of your wife.

I hope everyone else's weekend is going along swimmingly. It seems I haven't gotten much done today except running around. Ok, I did treat myself, when I really shouldn't have. I saw a gold chain that I liked and bought it, lol. I used to wear a chain all the time and just got tired of it because it wasn't exactly what I wanted. So, today, I got what I wanted. :)

Working on my computer installation a little, and ground up some leaves with the Deere. She ate em up too! It was like hmmm, where did they go to anyway! Still coming down like crazy though. The gutters are full, and it was a virtual leave storm while I was grinding them up. Futal battle!

Take care folks,

Bummer about the calibration party Gregg, but I did get a mental image and it was exactly like the trailer to Monster Inc. on the Toy Story 2 disk. The calibrator would have been the cyclops (Billy Crystal) and you and your buds would be that dog grrring in the back, after he said he did not bring a colorimeter, LOL & heheheh

Jehan, I have picked up the Titus a couple of times only to put it backdown, maybe.......

After watching U-571 twice, I decided to purchase it, actually I saw it 3 times because I went up to Audio Express, hung around, loaded my new copy of it and watched it on the Pioneer SD-641 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/home/SD-641-HD5.htm) and a B&W/Rotel system. it was fun, Even with out a Sono sub :W

Also had to pick up Gold Finger, love how all that stuff is so old looking yet razor sharp :B

Howdy everyone from Cold Hampshire. What a day... it's been cold and SNOWING most of the day, it even accumulated a tiny bit... it's WAY too early for this! It isn't even Halloween yet, let alone Christmas, when I wouldn't mind a little snow. Time to move to Florida! :)

Gregg--sorry to hear about your wife's grandmother. My wife lost her grandmother (father's side) to cancer back in January so we know what you're going through. Your wife's name is Heather too!? Interesting. There's something special about Heathers I guess. :B

My friend Bob and I went to a HTF meet in Mass. and met Andy Garabedian and saw his new basement HT. What a picture his projector put out... puts my HD-ready RPTV to shame. :) Something to shoot for in the long term.

You guys do know that there's a movie titled "Heathers" right? :D

I am so disappointed in the moderators here with their blatant disregard for the flip-padding that goes on around here! Shame! Shame! Shame!

BTW, Here's a scary pre-halloween story that's true:

Last year near Halloween, I have related the account of 2 grandparents that were visiting their daughter (who live in the cul de sac behind my house) were shot by "trick-or-treaters" wearing Star Wars masks (the Darth Maul mask was recovering on the side yard of my house.

Well, I didn't realize this until today, but on Monday of this past week, I saw 4 cop cars, and 2 ambulances at the house just 4 houses down from me. There were a lot of cops milling around, didn't seem like much was going on, so I didn't give it much thought (thinking maybe an intruder was caught at the house, I dunno).

Well, it turns out that it was a murder-suicide. A married couple with 2 girls lived in the house. The mother was on her second marriage. The stepfather killed the mother, and then killed himself with gunfire. I feel really bad for the 2 girls who lost their mother. But I also found out that the girls have been returned to their biological father, so that's a relief.

October is just not a good month in my neighborhood.

Hi Kevin!! Yes Ive noticed for some time that your wife's name is Heather too. X How is your sub doing??The sub is great!! One time my friend Bob came over and we sampled a scene from The Haunting (chapter 10, "Coming Mother") and we were both blown away by the bass. He recently sold his Yamaha sub and now he's itching to get a SVS. The CS 800's working great too. It just fits in one of the nooks in the Mitsubishi stand under my RPTV. I also have a Behringer Feedback Destroyer in the loop to tame a nasty peak at 50hz, it makes a big difference in the sound.

Anyway, Im ignoring my Heather and have decided to get a new TV before she gets back to town. So Ive been surfing all day. I think I have it narrowed down to the Tosh TW65H80 but now trying to find the best price...Oh, Heather's going to kill you when she gets back! heh heh ;) But the TW65H80? That's the 1999 model... did you mean the TW65X81 (2000 model) or the 65H80 (2001 model)? Toshiba really made their model numbers confusing with the 2001 line.

See ya... KJP

Bing, wow you got to sit and watch a whole movie? They must like you there. :)

Joey, that's a scary algebra book. Don't put that outside or nobody's going to ring the bell. :) Hell I even screamed when I saw it. ;)

Kevin, I agree with you, Toshiba really screwed up on the model numbers. Isn't it a rule somewhere that you can never use the same model numer twice? Or use it within 2 years? Like isn't that basic product model numbering 101?

Watched the Lost World on Friday night. Now that was some great sound action. I enjoyed the movie, first time watching it through completely.

Had some friends over on Sat night and watched American Beauty. This was the first time for all of us. My initial impressions were, what a weird movie. I guess after all the awards, I was expecting something else. I'm going to watch this again. We also watched the last bit of Toy Story. Wow, I can't believe how great this movie looks. Plus I think I need new glasses, since I was sitting much closer than usual, I notice so much more detail. :) Also watched Shanghai Noon on Sunday. Now I'm really itching to go see Drunken Master. I've got a 3 day seminar starting Friday so my time's going to be tight this week.

I'm about an hour from Portsmouth (where State Street Discount is). You'll probably be taking I-95 to get to Portsmouth. You'd have to make a 1-hour detour (onto Route 101) each way to get to/from Manchester.

We'll meet someday. Who knows when. :) Maybe Bob and I will do the next HTF meet at our houses, and you can drop by. Then you can experience my SVS first hand. In fact, after your Heather kicks you out of the house for buying that new TV, you're perfectly welcome to stay at our house for a while, just bring that 65H80 with you. :B

And looking back at my use of 'weird' as a descriptor, I don't think I meant 'weird' it just that I've been using 'interesting' far too long and find, to me, 'interesting' no longer has meaning. 'Interesting' as in I hate it, but I'm too nice to say that, or 'Interesting' as in this movie works on so many differnt levels, or 'Interesting' this is way to much brain work for me at the moment.

According to news reports in July and August, Mack W. Metcalf, 42, of Florence, Ky., has led a dismal life that included frequent drinking binges, some DUI and other traffic charges, drug selling, eviction for failure to pay rent, and a debt of $31,000 in back child support. However, in July, he won a $34 million lump-sum jackpot in the Kentucky Lottery. (His haplessness continues: Shortly after he was paid, he handed a woman $500,000 as a gift, but later realized he was drunk and has now sued to get the money back.)

Atta Boy Pat, Love those amps!

Paul, It was towards the end of the day, and I think they were just as eager to watch it as well.
It was satisfiying to note that I think my sub compared favorabily to the B&W 15" AS3000 (http://www1.bwspeakers.com/products/gallery/product_details.cfm?object_id=419DBF2D-EF4D-11D3-B01E0000E20E7DA6) in performance, and was not as boomy to boot. Actually, I think my sub gives a better lower subsonic shake in comparision, It was as you all have said here, "something you get use to after listening to over boosted, boomy bass". DIY is the way to go for total performance at a minimal to moderate cost. Mind you, when I add my expenses up, it get's up there PDQ :E

AB was weird Paul, don't apologize for it, Still I like it and thought Kevin Spacey was excellent in his role.

Joey, the hell is he wanting the 500K back when he's got 34 mill? That's like asking for the 5'ver you spotted someone, sure there is the principle involved, but hey, it's only 5 bucks.

Hi guys!

Gregg: good luck with the new TV and your Heather. Buying her a nice piece of jewelry to go along with the new toy will go a long way! It'll be nice to see her again, won't it? ;)

Joey6P: I was just on the Seti@Home website--how have you managed to get all the way up to #17 on the HTF stats? How many computers do you have?? :) I'm plodding along at #69 and I have two Pentium IIIs (one 500, one 800) grinding away (though the 800 isn't on all the time).

Kevin,
I almost forgot about that. I stopped running seti a few months ago, as my goal was to get into the top ten and then stop running it. I pretty much utilized 20+ machines at times, like if there was a long weekend coming I'd get all of the machines in my lab running it so they could work undisturbed for a few days. Slowly but surely I got up to #8 at one point, and then got beat back down ;) Now I don't have any machines running it though, haven't for a few months, and I'll eventually drop from the list I suppose :)

Gregg,
Sorry, it was on the backburner for a while, I'll get yours and Pl@'s extra sets sent out this weekend. I have to download them all from my network at home, burn them to disc, and then send them back to the network, so it'll take a little while. I'll make sure to get it done though, sorry about that.

Good morning everybody!

Bing, that was great!!

Story of the day (actually yesterday).

Yesterday, Heather was driving back from St John NB where she went to her grandmother's funeral which was Monday. She and the kids stopped at MacDonalds in Calais Maine (the middle of nowhere, 2 hours from St John and 4.5 hours from me). After lunch all shared the handicap stall and the kids were fighting over who would flush the toilet. Heather reached over to stop the fight and her car keys fell into the toilet just as Sarah flushed it!

I get this histerical phone call about the situation. In the mean time Macdonalds calls a plumber who dismantles the john and states the keys went through the trap and are lost. Anyway, the nearest Honda dealer was 120 miles away. I made about 20 phone calls and finally found a wrecker that said he would either hot wire the car or tow it home. He was able to hot wire it and Heather went on her way.

The funny part about this is the whole thing is MY FAULT because I wanted to see the kids for Halloween. Dont figure (it never does).

So the family gets home around 6 PM and I open the car door to sarah telling me: "mommy put the keys in the toilet and I flushed them". I started to laugh and then got sworn at...

I had roses waiting for Heather so that softened her a little. Anyway...I might get some next month (December).

Have a great day!!

Gregg

Gregg, Oh how I feel for you. You just can't win, now if you had just left things alone, you'd have a nice new TV and still wouldn't be getting any till December. ;)

Bing, that's a great looking pumking, and I agree with Pat, shades of Calvin and Hobbes. I like the strip where Calvin builds snowmen around the car looking at another snowman that was run over.

Pl@, yes pretty addictive, like what's coming up next. How many are on this site, jesh. Spent too much time there already.

Joey, funny etrade ad.

A problem I'm sure alot of people would like to have is having too much vacation time. I've got a ton, well 15.67 days to use before the end of December, but I can never seem to find a good time to take off. If I don't there's a fair chance that I will lose them. :( So looks like the a week in December and a bunch of single days between now and the end of the year.

Welcome to November eveybody, seems like Oct went by so fast.

Just to type something out, here's the problem I'm working on at this moment for Math, it's easy:

Solve:

A patient's medication is to be increased in consecutive even-integer dosages in three administrations, for a total of 24 grains of medication. How many grains of medication will be administered each time?

So x equals the first even integer.
That means, since they're all consecutive even integers the second even integer has to be x + 2. By default, the last one (since there are three total) is x + 4. So here's what we have to work with:

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 24

When we combine like terms we wind up with:

3x + 6 = 24
- 6 - 6

3x = 18
/3 /3

x = 6

So the first dose is 6, and then they increase by 2 consecutively. So the answer is

( 6 , 8 , 10 )

So Joey, it's not scary enough around here with the "pumpkin moon" picture, you had to go and throw a math problem in for good measure?? You are a sadist... ;)

Thanks for the laughs Gregg, I know it wasn't real funny when it was happening. Reminds me of the time my wedding ring dropped into the toilet. Reaching in to get it I knocked it down further, and then I couldn't see it. There is a small opening right in the front of the drain area that water shoots out of when flushed, and my ring had somehow gotten into that area. Knowing I hadn't flushed, and that the ring was still in there, I took the whole toilet down and outside in the garage, turned it every which way I could, and could not get the ring to come out. I could hear it hitting against the walls of the toilet though.

So I get the trusty 10 pound sledge, and it was HAMMER time!! :) Didn't know toilets could bust into so many pieces...

Joey, the problem with these problems is that they don't relate to anyting that matters. Who cares about this patient and grain business. And man what kind of HMO is giving perscriptions in grains? So how about rewording it to something more relevant?

There's a dvd deal available at figureitoutanditsyours.com. You'll get a total of 24 free dvds! Yes 24, they will be sent to you in 3 different shipments and because of this great deal you have to order them in consecutive even-integer numbers. (can't seem to get around that even-integer phrase) So how many will be in each shipment?

Hmmm... Joey6P, Moderator... I don't know whether to be happy or scared! heh heh :B Congrats Joey!!

Well, I'm going to be Pronto-less for a few days. I have one of the Prontos with the annoying tendency to reboot itself while it was being used, and since the firmware upgrade didn't fix it, the place I bought it from is willing to exchange it for me. So I'll be shipping it off to them today and they'll send me another one. In the meantime I'll have to remember how to run my HT with the original remotes! :E

My HT nut co-worker and I went to Tweeter at lunch yesterday to look at the toys. I find myself inexplicably drawn to the small group of RPTVs in one corner of the stores running the in-store HDTV feed. What a picture... it's a shame that when everything switches to HDTV in the future that there won't be any quality programming to take advantage of the higher resolution, if the quality of programming in recent years is any indication. Thank goodness for DVDs! :)

Oh well, that's enough Incoherent Rambling(tm) for one post. Heck, I haven't used the term Incoherent Rambling(tm) in a while. I guess I should do more Incoherent Rambling(tm) in the future.

It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

The Web-site you seek
Cannot be located, but
Countless more exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

ABORTED effort:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

First snow, then silence.
This thousand-dollar screen dies
So beautifully.

With searching comes loss
And the presence of absence:
"My Novel" not found.

Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your life.
The network is down.

A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

All shortcuts have disappeared.

This story took place on the other side of town. I like on the northeast side of Atlanta, this story took place on the northwest side of town, about 20-25 miles away.

The hoodlums that showed up in court for their arraignment showed no remorse, were laughing and cutting up, and one of them was mugging for the TV cameras. There are some seriously messed up people out there.

As for moving? I dunno. There's bad stuff everywhere, but it seems October is a bad month for me locally.

If anybody is buying ANY gear I highly recommend the group purchase. Please remember that pricing varied greatly amongst the discount retailers. Call around!!

Hope everybody had a great day.

Rick,
Well stated!

Gregg,
Uh oh, the "little kid at Christmas" syndrome strikes again! Congratz on your new set! Sounds like a killer deal. Remember to post a ton of pictures and a review ;)
I'm getting your guys' MP3s recorded as we speak. My machine has been working on them since I got here today. Near being done though. You guys should get them soon.
I'm going to do my damndest to get it to you Monday morning in time for your trip :) I let you know on ICQ earlier, so you should have a message waiting :)

What a sickening story Pl@. I pray to God that nevers happens to my family or any of yours. I agree with you Rick, string them up and be done with it. But since that won't happen, I would have to seriously think about getting to them myself and settling things up. Disgusting.

Good night to all.

Just a side note, I got through watching Titan:AE tonight.. the film itself (I hadn't seen it before) was quite exciting, but folks this is as close to Audio and Video nirvana as you will get I think :). The DTS mix + the gorgeous anamorphic transfer are to die for.. I was in awe for most of the movie. Highly recommended.

Pat, nice running flip.

Gregg, sounds like a nice new toy is coming your way, did you go for the matching prog player as well?

Bing, haven't done much riding in the past 7 yrs or so. I used to heavily into road riding, had 2 road bikes, then moved into moutain biking, only had one of those. Got out of biking as I was focusing on other pursuits, which took up my time and where a bike accident wouldn't go over too well.

Jehan, thanks for the quick review, I just ordered Titan AE, will be looking forward to when it arrives.

Night all, I'm off to a seminar for the next 3 days, so no going crazy with the flips. :)

Gregg, congrats on the new toy!! You'll be blown away by how great DVDs (especially anamorphic ones) will look on this set! Imagine not seeing scan lines anymore. :B

Now you'll need a progressive player--a Tosh 6200 would be a perfect match for your set. Or a Pioneer Elite DV-37.

Last night was my first night trying to run my system without a Pronto. Fortunately, when I got my RPTV, the delivery guys programmed its remote to control most of my components. But since then I've upgraded my receiver, so the Mits remote won't control that (it's not a learning remote, and I doubt it has Outlaw 1050 codes in it). But I'm limping by for the time being. Hopefully my replacement Pronto will arrive early next week.

Not much else to say right now... not much Incoherent Rambling(tm) coming from me today. Oh well, I'll think of something. :)

Morning All!

Paul, Sounds much the same as me, I got a 1989 Carbon Fiber moncoque Trek, with DuraAce, that looks brand new (really, not a generalization), I recently sold a Klein Quantum Pro DuraAce, and not to mention 3 MTB's(2 are mine) hanging from raffters as well! :B Getting old, need more seditary hobbies :B I pulled my hockey equipment down from the rafters... we got game tonight. Ouch, this is going to hurt!

Rick, I tweaked my pronto for about a week or so, but I'm pretty satisfied with it for now. I have made the odd change, like a button assignment. But that's about it.

Well I'm going to take the digital cable box plunge to grab the special Shaw is offering now. I know it's not as good as Sat, but we are a 3 TV household and we will all be able to watch different programing with the cable box. Not that I watch much cable tv, but I hope I get a better image. This XBR is great for anamorphic DVD, but can really look bad for cable at times.

Have a good day all!

Trevor - what's snow? Our forecast for tomorrow is high 68, low 58 with a chance of storms, rain that is. My boys would go nuts as one is almost 6 and has yet to see any snow! I know I gripe about the 40 plus days of over 100 degrees in the summer, but the winters are very mild. Hardly ever have to even grab a jacket unless it is January/early Feb. :)

Watched Rules of Engagement last night, great sound, so so plot and storyline. Loved the surround detail though in the Vietnam scenes. :)

Getting family pictures taken at 11:45, then am thinking about watching North by Northwest today as it is raining, and doesn't look like it will clear. Great movie watching weather!

Two Bryston 3B's at 400 watts each bridged for the mains.
Three Bryston 2B's at 200 watts each bridged for the rears and centers..

Have a good trip Gregg, it's sounds exciting, travel around looking at things HT related and then coiming home to a new TV! Most excellent.

Trev, How can you go wrong with that many Brystons, humm? They are priced right and it sounds like a good deal to me. If I hadn't of purchased all these Monoblocks, I would crtainly move on those Brystons. One thing though, is the Bryston 3B really 400 watts bridged? My friend had 2 3B's bridged and he stated it was 200 to 250 watts bridged, for the 3B is ~100W/ch, Stll Those Bryston's must me underated power @ 100W/ch

Winter has arrived,,That 'Snow Dance' that Bing performed really worked..Lots of snow today.

I haven't called on the Brystons yet, There is an ad in the local paper so I will call on the pricing..I got my info from the website. They are advertised as 2B's and 3B's,,but the webpage indicates them as 3B-ST and 2B-LP,,so maybe they are not the same..I will find out.

Rules of Engagement was 'OUTSTANDING'..The rear surrounds carried lots of deep tones and imaged perfectly with the fronts..The panning of sound effects from front to back was perfect.

Gloomy and misty today but NO SNOW:) you guys in toon town can keep it IMO. Watched Mission to Mars this morning. I went in with very low expectations and there were so pretty big holes in its story with respect to its portrayal of how Evolution works but still it was better then I thought it would be. Good use of surrounds too. Got the Patriot cued up but The X-Files season primere will likely be whats up for tonight.
