Accoustics in a small room with tile flooring.

OK next question. Accoustics: What are some of the tips and tricks to get better sound out of a room that has concrete/ceramic tile flooring? is there something to put down besides carpet or something? Today I was in a home improvement store and found 3x3ft sq "tiles" of a hard rubbery type of material that would be used in places like weight rooms or exercise rooms. Off the top of my head it would seem like a possible anti-reflection material. Any thougts?

No...what i am asking is would a material like that be better accoustically than something like carpet? What makes a good acoustic dampening material?

Well I'm guessing softer than concrete they'd still be a more reflective (hard) surface than carpet. Especially thick underpad, thick pile carpet. For sound absorption you want something with LOT's of tiny air pockets, "sponge-like" to absorb sound waves.

            Tim,

I definitely recommend carpet as your best reasonably priced option. Be sure to go with a good thick pad, also. With carpet minimizing one major source of reflected sound, it'll be easier to work on reducing those from the walls and ceiling.

Now, here's a more radical suggestion, in case you don't want to attack your room decor.

Use dipole speakers. The off axis nulls really reduce the problems with room acoustics; just ask ThomasW about his family room setup with the Arvo's.

              Regards,
