    Our HT Room Transformation

Jen and I were talking this weekend and - knock me over with a feather! - she has wholeheartedly agreed to several major modifications to our little dedicated HT room. What started out as a simple job of adding French doors has become this:
    1. - build opening in wall to recess RPTV
      - build second opening in this wall to recess electronics into
      - run speaker cabling to surrounds via in-wall cables
      - paint upper portions of walls and put pleated fabric on lower portion
      - install mahogany French doors and sidelights w/transom
      - replace "builders" carpet with a color-matched Berber
      - replace existing curtains with a color-matched set
      - put matching curtains on French doors
      - maybe, install wall sconce lighting

This is going to be fun. :T

I won't be able to start on it for a few weeks (mid-August is my target) as I have another project to wrap up first. I'll be sure and keep a complete photo journal this time. That's the one regret I have from the old house and my HT room project there - we didn't get all of it in pictures. You can see a few photos of the room as-is by following the link in my signature.

We're doing this because frankly, our HT room is too small at 13 feet 6 inches by 12 feet. Recessing the Pioneer into the master closet will put another 2 feet between the screen and the seating positions which will give a feeling of a larger room. This will also clean up/open up the soundstage by getting that big box out of the way. The center channel will go on an adjustable floor stand in front of the TV, between the mains. Recessing the equipment rack into to the wall (good thing the master closet is so big!) will help the soundstage and roominess, not to mention giving easy access to the rear panels of the components. The surround speaker cable runs will require a good bit of sheetrock work - especially since I want to make use of my Yamaha's center-rear channel. The wall treatments, carpet and curtains are for sonic and also for cosmetic reasons. The wall sconces are a nice touch, but I wonder if the room is too small to have them work well?

This is the outline in a nutshell. I'll be posting here as things progress. Wish us luck!
    :yeah:

That makes a lot of sense, Tex. Say, isn't it great when we have wives who not only understand our addiction, but pitch in with ideas and help. A lot of what is in my HT is because of suggestions from my wifey, and her help, especially in tailoring the drapes for the screen. We are indeed very fortunate.

Good luck with the renovations. Will be really cool when you are finished.

Those all look like great improvements to the room David. Take your time and plan everything out ...its easier to fix potential problems now rather then later

        Andrew,

This is the second room I've had the pleasure of "building out" and on the first I didn't have a formal project plan - just some notes I kept as reminders. NOT THIS TIME! I've learned fella. I've already roughed out a project plan and will firm it up in the next couple of weeks. Three things that will determine how the schedule goes are:
        1. - finishing up the existing project - two/three weeks max
          - the carpet is going in on or around August 26th
          - the door and sidelights won't be ready until the end of July/first of August

          QUESTION #1:

How will the color of the walls affect my picture? My Pioneer Elite RPTV has a known issue with red dominance. If I paint the walls a burgundy - like the old time theaters - will it make the issue more noticeable? Will it make it better? Will it not effect it at all?

I'm thinking it'll make it worse, and if it does, can I correct it enough with the color settings to keep the screen color palette in balance?

What about a deep forest green?

Hmm good questoin on the red walls and red push....I'd lean towards a more neutral colour for the walls so that no one colour is effected...grey isn't pretty but works great and you can add colour with accents etc

              Andrew,

Yeah, that's my concern. Grey isn't an option (oh well). We are looking at other combinations:
              1. - forest green paint/deep forest green fabric
                - medium coffee paint/chocolate fabric
                - medium-dark blue paint/navy blue fabric

              Any comments? Susan?

                Hey David,

Great to hear that you got the green light on the room.

I'm not sure how different colors on walls influance colors on screen. I do know that, I once had a room that was all black. The picture seemed less like it was coming from a TV.

I may go with a dark brown or chocolate this time, since the carpet is already brown and in great shape.

Here's the room as it is today.

I'll have the "where we're going" version up tonight. For the curious, this drawing was created in a little program called 3D Home Architect. Inexpensive, easy to use.

Any chance you could rotate that so that the TV is along the short wall?

                      Andrew,

That was how I had the room arranged originally, and despite weeks (literally) of moving/tweaking I never could get the soundstage right. That was the driving force in my getting CARA. After modelling several set-ups, this one showed the best results. I switched everything around, tweaked the mains' positions for a couple of days and viola!, much better sound and soundstage!

AND to top it off, this new layout is what is driving the room mods. We (okay, I) still want
                      1. - better separation between the screen and seating position
                        - better imaging between the mains
                        - more of a "theater atmosphere"

                        Hey, Tex,
If it sounds right it must be okay. For viewing though, I would be concerned about the viewing angles for anyone sitting far right or far left. Doesn't the picture on the RPTV darken that far off angle ?

                          George,

No not at all, this Pioneer has excellent angle-viewing capability. Actually, pushing the screen back to a point that is flush with the wall will decrease the viewing angle from center-axis.

                              David -

The plan looks really good. Having seen your previous carpentry handiwork, I know it is quite doable for you. And having been in the room, I know the mods will be a big help toward reaching your goals for your HT.

Having the component closet with easy rear access is worth going ahead with the room mods. And recessing the RPTV should eliminate the feeling that you are sitting with your nose pressed against the screen. :>) Plus, seeing only the screen and not the big box protruding into the room will definately give a more theatrical feel to the room, which will also benefit from a general feeling of greater spaciousness.

I do hope that the rear center channel speaker will be well secured, and well above head height (would have to be anyway to avoid blocking the window as I recall), so no one will be bumping into it while sitting in or getting in and out of the center chair. (You don't want your head to become "knot's landing".) :>)

Now just finish your other project(s) and get going on it!

                              Burke

What you DON'T say may be held against you...

That "other" project is 95% done. Final staining right now with sealing to come, and it's history!

The rear-center will go above the window and trust me, it'll be VERY secure. No "Knots Landings" please. Hehe.

                                  Looks pretty good to me.

What are your plans for running the wiring?

You might want to experiment with the seating after you get it up and running again. Moving the seats off the back wall, even just a little bit might make a difference in the spaciousness and/or boominess of the sound.

Burke - that may not be the case. I own a reclining leather couch that is about 3" away from the wall and it has no problem reclining. They are called Wall Huggers and they are awesome. I will be updating my web site with pics of the my new house and you can see the couch.

Eduardo, unfortunately Burke is right, these aren't the "hugger" type of chair. They actually sit about 8-10" off the wall, but I drew them that close in the diagram without thinking.

August 5th update: Some signs of progress! We've moved Jen's sister out of the house and into her new home, so that gets a LOT of stuff out of the way and gives me a room to house all the HT gear and furniture when I start construction. I've got Lex building a couple of 8-meter BlueTiger cables to use on the sub-woofer run (left and right signals), and the French door and sidelights should be ready within the week.

Hey, I HAD to wait on We Were Soldiers to show up! First step'll be to remove all the equipment and furniture - no HT for a while, augghhh! Oh well, I'll just live vicariously through y'all for a while, okay?

September 3rd update: The master closet portion of this job has taken on a life of its own! What started out as "just" recessing the TV and equipment into the closet area has grown into re-modelling most of the usable area of the closet.

Last weekend, I built racks for the DVD's and CD's on the door wall of the closet.

This weekend, I removed all the L-shaped shelves from a 4'x3' alcove in the master closet, lined it (floor to ceiling) with cedar planks cut on a 45 degree angle, and put in a double row of clothes rods. I put in a narrow column (13" wide x 11" deep) of shelves at the deep end of the alcove. All that's left there is to finish sand, caulk and paint the shelves. That should be done by bedtime tonight. Move the clothes around, and it'll be time to start on the recess for the RPTV.

September 4th update: Well, I got sidetracked helping with Geometry homework last night, and I'm on the late-shift tonight at work so we'll try again tomorrow night to finish up the alcove.

Lex, actually I'm still okay on the speaker cables (I think - it'll be close!), but the interconnects are another story. I'm going to add another level to the equipment rack for an ICBM-type unit and that's playing hell with my cable runs! More later, once I get a good handle on the specific layout. Sheesh, all that money spent on those AudioQuest Topaz.

September 10th update: pulled more sheetrock down and built the header that goes over the opening for the RPTV recess. Double 2x10's with 1/2" plywood spacer between, glued with HD construction adhesive and then nail-gunned and screwed together. It's only a 5' opening but it's on a load-bearing wall with a second floor bedroom above.

Tonight I'll brace the wall, cut the studs, put the cripples in and place the header. That'll be enough! Whew.

I think tomorrow (the 11th) is going to be an off day. Just spend time with the family, kind of remember things missing and friends gone. Take care.

The sheetrock is all cut and out, the headers are in, the 2x4's for wall modifications are in, the electrical runs and switches for the ceiling fan and wall lighting are in, and the cabinets for the RPTV and equipment have been started.

Going out to a couple of specialty lighting stores at lunch to look at wall sconces. Decided to get bids on running a couple of dedicated 20-amp circuits into the equipment cabinet - one will be for down-the-road upgrades. I was going to be "fiscally concious" (cheap) and just piggy-back off the existing circuits, but after tearing everything out it'd be stupid not to take advantage of the situation.

It's a garden variety Lutron Spacer, but I need black instead of white and that's an "order from the factory".

It's a modern black wall sconce with a halogen bulb that doesn't require low voltage switching. I had to special order its mate from TriArch as the standard finish is pewter. 30 days they say. Oh well, good things come to those who wait, right? Here's an image:

All the wiring (electrical and 3 surround speakers) is in except for the dedicated circuits. All insulation is in the walls, almost all the sheetrock is up that can go up (just 2 little holes and the section where the dedicated lines will run are still to do), the carpet was put in Friday and covered by painter's cloth. I'll put the two small pieces of sheetrock in and start the taping and floating tonight - wish me luck!
