Star Wars Originals will never be on DVD

I have heard that George Lucas has announced that the Original Star Wars Trilogy (as seen in theaters) will never be released on DVD. They will only relese the updated/special editions.

    Later, Snow

That's been a rumor off and on for quite a while now. Hearing it again just reminds me of how glad I am that I kept my original-version laser discs of the original SW trilogy -- and also kept a laser disc player to still be able to watch them. :>) I didn't appreciate the "enhancements" of the "special editions" a whole lot more than I liked The Phenomenal Mistake which Lucas tried to pass off as the first episode of the space epic.

I don't want the "special" editions! There is nothing special about them! Han fired first, dammit!

Ooops, sorry 'bout that. . . . The whole Star Wars bit gets me going sometimes.

Hi Snow, welcome to The Guide!

Hmmm... I don't mind the special editions myself. I certainly DO like the enhanced colors and picture quality that Lucas gives in the special editions. I would bet money, though, that before he releases the original trilogy on DVD, he'll do ANOTHER digital remastering to bring it up to even higher quality.

Oh, and what scene is it in question where "Han fired first"? I can't think of one that was changed like that. Greedo?

Burke, I also treasure that Star Wars trilogy LD set.

Yep. They added a lame-ass laser blast from greedo's gun hitting the wall above Han's head before he fries him. No one is that bad a shot. Well unless they are a storm trooper.

                David -

Someday George will grow old and pass on. Then his estate and the rights to starwars will revert to someone else. If we all wish real hard, maybe that person will be extremely greedy and release the original trilogy on the new ultradef violet laser organic crystal format.

Also, don't expect just the "special editions" on the DVD in 2005. He is not done monkeying with the movies, those were works in progress. There will be more digital mayhem to come.

Okay, that was too strong a statement. Yes I do appreciate the better color saturation and PQ, but what I hate is NOT having the choice to watch the version of the movie I want. Which is the one I've watched for 25+ years now. Which is the one where Han shoots Gredo without warning. This is one of those defining moments that tell a lot about a character - yes, Han's a charming rogue, but he's also hard and calloused enough to shoot first.

That's what I object to. Not giving me the choice to watch the original version. Grrrrrrrr.
