What DVDs Did Santa Bring You?

    Santa was good to me:

    Band Of Brothers :5:
    Minority Report :4:
    Men In Black II :3:
    Bad Company
    :2:

although Bad Company turned out to be quite a stinker.

    Iron Giant
    Rob Roy
    Gladiator

Liked Iron Giant. Was mildly amused to see Vin Diesel was the voice.

Liked Rob Roy, nice DVD, especially for $10.

    Now Gladiator, well...

The DVD was produced well, and I give a lot of credit to everyone who made the film EXCEPT whoever wrote the story.

Anyone got a convincing argument why Commodus would fail to kill Maximus upon or soon after finding him alive, and why he would EVER think it was a good idea to fight him in armed combat even if he was "wounded"?

Will only watch this at the request of guests at this point.

Gift Certificates. That's always my preference. Then I can buy what I want.

Brandon, that's a definite plot loophole, but I didn't let it spoil the movie for me.

BTW, was the name Commodus assigned because it makes one think of a toilet ? Thus making the Commodus character a piece of S--T

Santa was also very nice to me. In a way, I was very nice to myself. I have two daughters and I have to give them the money to buy my presents. They always are willing to take suggestions though, so this year it was.

        From Dana (15 years old)
Band of Brothers - can't say enough about how good this is. My favorite episode is "Why We Fight", especially since I had just seen the academy award winning Spielberg documentary on the holocost, The Last Days.

Monterey Pop Festival - A must have for me as I was a teen during the 60's. The "Outtake" performances were best for me as I've seen the rest. And, I get to show my daughter who people/groups like Laura Nyro, The Electric Flag, an Quicksilver Messenger were.

From Katie, my 10 year old, I got Sopranos, seasons 2 and 3. I don't get cable, but am addicted to this series.

          Most movies have plot loopholes.

I just get (too) hung up when a movie spends time creating a character, then the story has them do something totally out of character.

I guess it would have been shorter if he'd just killed him right then though.

Probably aggravates me also, because outside of that, it was a very well done movie. And Ridley Scoot is one of my favorite directors.

            Lets see, I received:

            Kiss of the Dragon
            Caveman
            Proof of Life
            Search for the Snow Leopard

It seems that four disc, was the magic number this holiday.

                Jon -

Have you watched Farscape disks up on your PJ setup?

Do they look nice that big? If so, what movie DVD would you say has a comparable picture quality?

I keep dancing around buying these, but haven't been convinced yet.

Jon, does the Back To The Future set have the proper aspect ratios for each movie ? I didn't buy because I read that the ARs were not all correct and the studio was going to do a re-issue.

                    Brandon,

The Farscape DVD's aren't in the same running for PQ as things like New Line Cinema or the better Sony releases, but they're some of the best TV sourced 4:3 DVD's I've seen. Sound is very dynamic, too. Particularly the 2nd season seems to be further improved. I turned on an old Sci Fi fan to Farscape for her Birthday and Xmas with the best of season 1 and 2.3 and 2.4 from season 2, and she's thoroughly hooked, now. In particular the three part episode on the second disk of 2.3 is good (storywise, settings, etc); it probably could have been a Farscape movie.

The only problem with the best of season 1 is that it doesn't include the "I, ET" episode, which is one of my favorites (I got that disk for my friend just for that episode). The original season 1 disks had some nice interview peices with the main characters/actors, too.

My friend was something of a Trek fan from long ago, but only really likes Voyager from the newer stuff.

I watch 4:3 material scaled to either 1280X1024 (on the bedroom presentation monitor) or at XGA.

                    George,

I have all three of the original movies on laser disk, which was frustrating because of differences in AR. I hadn't heard about there being a problem with the DVD release. Is it just that they're different from the original Theatrical AR? The two I've watched have been 1.85:1 ("full screen at 16:9), and a quick check shows the third is also.

Compared with the LD, the DVD's have much better fine detail (anamorphic vs Letterbox, of course), and have better color fidelity and lower noise in low light level scenes. The scenes in the Hill Valley Mall when they're first testing the time machine are impressive in their film like quality. (this is through an HTPC on my NEC presentation monitor (direct view), scaled to 1600X900).

I'm quite pleased overall with the quality of the DVDs- when my daughter was young, this trilogy was among her favorite movies to watch- she would want to watch at least one of them every weekend, it seemed!

So, my opinion that the current set does a very nice job of capturing the BTTF experience for the home- if there is something to be gained by another tweak of the aspect ratio, I expect it will be subtle.

                    Best regards,

                    Jon

Huh, Santa's been bringing me DVD's for the last few months.

But I did get Grease and Dirty Dancing in just in time to give them to Angibug for Christmas. She was very excited as they are 2 of her favorites.

Jon, I believe the problem with the BTTF dvd set is that the framing within the 1:85 AR was incorrect, at least as compared to the theatrical and LD versions. But only 2 and 3 were affected. The studio has agreed to replace these two versions with correctly framed versions if you return your incorrect dvds. I guess, If I hadn't been made aware of the incorrect framing, it wouldn't have bothered me. If I wasn't such a nitpicker, I'm sure I could enjoy the set as it is.
