    DVD recommendations for wife....

I need some help fellows. My wife gave me a wake up call, so to speak, when she made a statement that I rarely get DVD's that she cares anything about. Problem is she can't really tell me what she wants.

She did mention she'd like to have Sweet Home Alabama and My Big Fat Greek Wedding Movie so those are pre-ordered.

She likes classics and romantic movies. I know she liked that movie The Wedding Planner and likes movies like that. She watches a lot of the Turner Movie Classics but I don't remember the movies she watched.

I know there are tons of movies out there but are there some that might fit the above that you could recommend as must have's?

    Thanks!

Here's some comedies and romantic commedies that my wife likes:

    Sleepless in Seattle
    You've Got Mail
    When Harry Met Sally
    What Women Want
    Return to Me
    Pretty Woman
    The Princess Bride
    Miss Congeniality
    Meet the Parents
    Keeping the Faith
    Legaly Blond

    I like them too.

Okay, here's a loaded question, what kind of movies does she like? If she can't stand romatic commedies, you better skip a few of my suggestions.

Uh oh, you don't remember the movies she watched? Better start paying attention.

LOL, thanks Paul. She does like romantic comedies.

I do need to pay closer attention.

I see a few on your list that will probably work.

Well I finally got Bug to help me pick out some DVD's to order up and she picked out some real classics:

Beach Blanket Bingo (Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello)
That Touch Of Mink (Cary Grant/Doris Day)
Pillow Talk (Rock Hudson/Doris Day/Tony Randall)
Imitation Of Life (Lana Turner/Sandra Dee/John Gavin)

We are patiently waiting for a few others to be hopefully released soon..... such as Gidget and a few other Sandra Dee and Doris Day movies.

And we ordered a few others as well:

        Grease
        Return To Me
My Big Fat Greek Wedding Movie
        Blade II
        Bad Company
        Sweet Home Alabama
        David Gilmour In Concert
        (Produced in 1.78:1)

And we are still looking for more classics. I was surprised at how many of these are available in widescreen. Unfortunately some really good classics are only available in 1.33:1.

If you fella's think of any classics similar to these that we might be missing out on, please let me know.

Julia Roberts, My Best Friend's Wedding, Runaway Bride, one with Hugh Grant, can't think of the name of it right now.

Addicted to Love. (very funny one) Trying to find my copy right now, lol.

          Sleepless in Seattle, of course.

Be sure and check the 9.99 rack at Walmart, if you guys have one down south.

Some women also like drama/action flicks that have a woman as the hero, for example, the Alien series, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, Panic Room, The Contender, Angel Eyes, Fargo, etc.

              You could try:

              Sound of Music
              My fair Lady

              Some of the Streisand movies

              Funny Girl
              What's Up Doc
              The Way We Were

To quickly think of a few

                Maybe that's their OAR

Sinign' in the Rain, new version is supposed to be really nice.
                Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Mona Lisa (sort of an adaptation of my Fair Lady).

Anything on film pre-dating the mid-fifties will have an aspect ratio of 1:33. I believe there may have been a couple of 1:66 ARs in 1953 or 54, but after that it was widescreen with the likes of Cinemascope, Cinerama, etc., with everything between 2:70 to Academy flat 1:85.

Sonnie, four of my (and Jenice's) favorite fairly recent romantic comedies are:

While You Were Sleeping - Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman
The American President - Michael Douglas, Annette Benning
Dave - Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver
Her Alibi - Tom Selleck, Paulina Porizkova

The 1995, I think, version of Pride and Prejudice, with Colin Firth is the best adaptation to a novel I've ever seen. That's saying a lot because I was an English major at U.C.L.A. and have read just tons of novels and am also an extremely avid film watcher. If I'm correct, over at Internet Movie Data Base, it has a ranking of 9.1, which ties it with Godfather as the number 1 rated film of all time, although it doesn't have enough votes to be listed. It's based on perhaps Jane Auston's best novel. I remember my wife and eldest daughter raving about the thing, but it's around 10 hours long and I just didn't want to start watching it at all. Then, I couldn't sleep one night, so, around midnight, I thought I'd watch a bit to put myself to sleep. What ended up happening was that I watched the thing the whole way through. I just couldn't turn the thing off. If she likes this, then Bridget Jone's Diary is a take off on Pride and Prejudice and also stars Colin Firth. But, she should watch Pride and Prejudice first.
