    Off To BB I Go

Well it's Tuesday so I'm headin' to BestBuy. Windtalkers is the big one, but we'll see what else is out today - IIRC, Casino Royale, Exodus and The Russians Are Coming are all being released.

I'll also be getting Windtalkers, but the one I am anxious to get is INSOMNIA with Pacino and Robin Williams.

Did you happen to catch Grave of the Fireflies on DVD this past week? (Best Buy didn't have it on display on Tuesday last week, but they finally did have it this past weekend.) One of the best war movies ever made -- an achingly sad, yet beautifully told story. It is an anime classic, and if you haven't gotten "into" that cinematic medium, this might be the breakthrough title for you.

        Burke,

I'm not familiar with that title. A review at IMDB says:

I have seen this film cause a roomful of college students to cry their eyes out. Unrelentingly sad, this film is a tragic parade, the theme being the horrors of war. I made it through without crying at all. I don't know how I did it. Regarded by some as the saddest movie ever made.

8O Wow. Don't know if I'm up for something like that at the moment. This may be a buy-it-and-store-it title.

          David -

I regard Grave of the Firefilesp in much the same way as Schindler's List, The Green Mile, The Thin Red Line excellent movies, but not movies I plan to watch a lot -- too harrowing emotionally.

But I'm glad I've seen it and will watch it again. It isn't at all a non-stop cry-fest. In fact, there are some humorous and uplifting moments as well (but that underscores and deepens the sadness when the bad stuff happens). And it isn't a blood and guts gross-out type of war film either -- most of what happens is on an emotional level in the struggle to cope with the deprivations of war. So it really works on your mind, not by overwhelming your senses. And that is probably why a lot of folks get out the hanky even if sad movies usually don't make them cry.

Yeah -- not one to watch if you need an "escape" to cheer you up, but definately one to have around to appreciate outstanding movie making.
