Every now and then I look for something different in a movie, and with the Cat's Meow, I found it.
It deals with William Randolph Hearst who invites a group of Hollywood folk out for a cruise on his yacht ( ship is more like it ). The crowd includes Hearts's mistress Marion Davies ( played nicely by Kirsten Dunst), Charlie Chaplin ( whom Hearst suspects is playing around with Davies, Louella Parsons ( fledgling columnist for the Hearst chain at the time) and an assortment of other social register notables. In reality, there was a mysterious death on that little cruise, and this film proposes a supposition of what really happened. I won't tell you as it would ruin things, but if you yearn for a look backward at the roaring twenties, the Charlston, and at how the super rich partied it up, go rent this dvd.
