What is your all time favorite DVD?

I couldn't see that this had been ask before.....then again I'm half blind, so....

What is your bestest mostest favorite DVD? (That you own!!!)

If you'd rather list a toss up between your top three.....that would be even mo betta.

I'm looking to increase my DVD collection and decisions are hard to make sometimes.

Of all things, I'm asking the question and can't decide what my favorite is.

    My top 3:

    Swordfish
    M:i-2
    The Last Don

Now you can see why I need to increase my collection.

I only own 30 right now, so I need some help picking out some good ones.

    Thanks!

Well, I own a few, but no where in the ball park of George! :B

Being a Sci-fi buff, Starship Troopers is still my favorite for pure fun and sound. Now and then some of the shots in space are breathtaking.

You did say I could do three, yes?

Next would be Mimic. Horror/Sci-fi again, Very involving sound effects (your rears will get a good workout with this one). Good to great picture (depending on the scene).

Dark City would be my Cult choice. All the above for sound. Picture is very clean, with excellent shadow detail. Great story.

Now if you check out the link at the bottom, which list al of my dvd's, you'll see that I own a lot of the big blockbusters which get all the glory of being Reference. I consider these a give me and thought that I would add the ones that I honestly never tire of viewing in my HT.

Can I throw Wing Commander in there too! It's not even anamorphic and I still enjoy it frequently.

      Thanks John.......

Sounds like the kind of suggestions I'm looking for.

I can see how Starship Troopers would be interesting.

I'll check out Mimic, Dark City, and Wing Commander. Can't say that I've seen either so those would be good to consider.

Another movie I'm considering on DVD is Medicine Man. I have that movie on LD and I've seen it countless times. I love the scenery and the music. That's the kind of music I can get enveloped in. And the story is interesting as well.

Yelp, and I'm seeing several on your quite impressive listing.

There are too many great movies on DVD to limit to just three. The first DVD I bought was Casablanca and I still do enjoy watching it.

Since T2: The Ultimate DVD and Dark City have already been nominated, I'll go with:

            Gladiator
            Silverado
            The Terminator: SE

              More good choices.

Markj, it is hard for me to have just one favorite. But we do have Casablanca on LD and my wife and I love that movie. I believe we'll have to see about eventually getting it on DVD. Fact is, my wife loves older movies....she has several favorites herself I probably need to check into getting as well.

SP one of my wife’s favorite movies is Breakfast at Tiffany's. We also have many older movies we like and could not say which is best. She also mentioned African Queen as another favorite but unfortunately it’s not on DVD yet.

Some great epic films would be Spartacus Lawrence of Arabia and Ben-Hur

I have so many movies I would find it hard to list favorites, but here are a few I replay often:

Shane ( I've owned this first on tape, then laserdisc and finally on dvd. I play it at least once every year.
Alien, this one I had on tape, then laserdisc and then dvd, also.
African Queen, another one that went from tape to laserdisc. Waiting for it to come to dvd.
High Noon, and on and on.
The above get a play at least once a year. But I have many other favorites in my collection, just too many to mention.

Favorite Romantic Comedy- "Addicted to Love" With Meg Ryan and Mathew Broderick. 2 guesses who I like most. This movie is sort of my movie I use to relax with late at night. Doesn't matter if I watched it last week,I watch it again, and again, and again. Sure,I know every detail of the movie, but I still enjoy it.

Second place RC - As good as it Gets

favorite Sci Fi, 5th Element,of course!

Favorite Romance, probably any one of Julia Roberts flicks

Favorite Action Adventure. This one's tough. At times, it's been Terminal Velocity. At times, it's been the Longest Kiss Goodnight, sometimes, the Bond flicks, at one time MI. It seems that at some point, I tire of most of my action adventures and shelve them for a long time before watching again.

But if I had to pick one AA movie, it would have to be "True Lies", then T2 second.

You know, this is a tough one. There have been a lot of good comments about great movies above, many that are favorites of mine. If it was a book we were talking about, my answer would roll off the toungue without even thinking- "Atlas Shrugged".

Three movies that my daughter and I used to watch over and over (years ago) are not yet out on DVD, though they will be later this year- the BTTF triology.

Can we try categories for $100?

                      Hard Sci-Fi: Alien Resurrection

                      Fantasy Si-Fi: Fifth Element

Video/Computer game based movie: Wing Commander

                      Action/Drama Leon the Professional

                      Action Desperado

                      Action/Horror Blade

                      Action/Comedy True Lies

                      Romantic Comedy *Runaway Bride

                      * MANY possible candidates here, including Lex's favorite "Addicted to Love", "Knotting Hill", "Say Anything", "As Good as it Gets", "Six Days Seven Nights".

Categories are good! I like that. Haven't really thought of it that way.

I do agree, it seems so hard to say which movie is my absolute favorite. Easier for me to say which DVD's I like since I don't have many. I couldn't imagine how I'd choose if I through in my favorite top 25-50 movies. :? Many of which I still have to purchase on DVD. A couple of those have been mentioned as well.

I tend to favor action/science fiction/fantasy movies but can get caught up in any type of movie and like it a lot. I suppose I like these because they have more of the modern day special effects.

As it's been 4 years since this thread was active I thought I'd resurrect it and see what has changed for all of us in that time - aside from receding hairlines and such.

Undoubtably, without a question, it is "U2: Rattle and Hum" DVD.

I could watch that over and over, especially "Bad" and "Pride".

Well since this was first posted there have been some pretty great dvds released. Here's a few I have been watching more than once:

                                        U571 ( Forget how many times I watched )
                                        GLADIATOR ( at least 5 times )
                                        WE WERE SOLDIERS ( 4 showings )
BLACKHAWK DOWN ( same as above )
RAY ( 4 times for me so far )
OPEN RANGE ( 6 times since I got it )

And there are plenty of others.

Well, since the one year free membership offer to the International Andrew M Ward Society of Secret FANatics (AKA: I-AM-WARDSS-FAN) expired yesterday, and I, being as of yet, its only official member, your suggestion will have to be tabled at our nightly amendments to the constitutional rules and acts of heresy committee meeting.

I must warn you, I am feeling a bit indecisive today, and this might get tied up in parliamentary procedural debate for a while.

wkhanna just reminded me of my love for Steve McQueen. I have everything he starred in that was released on tape, ld, and thankfully most of his work is now on dvd, which has replaced many of the tapes and laserdiscs. The four McQueen titles that get the most play in my HT include THE GETAWAY, BULLITT, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR.The chess scene in the latter, between McQueen and Faye Dunnaway has to be the sexiest scene ( without any sex ) ever filmed. As for the other titles such as NEVADA SMITH, PAPPILON, THE GREAT ESCAPE, THE REIVERS , THE SAND PEBBLES, etc, etc, all get plenty of play and will until... well just until.

Wittiest dialog: "A Man For All Seasons", on DVD unfortunately the dialog comes across kind of raspy via the center channel.
                                                                    Second place: "Elizabeth"

Second place: "Mississippi Burning" (I'll admit I watch this one more often because I really enjoy the on-screen chemistry between Francis McDormand and Gene Hackman.)

Most amazing and satisfying musical: “Fiddler on the Roof

Most stirring rendition of a national anthem: "Casablanca"

Branagh's version is gutsy, thrilling and "real" despite the opening shots -- about as exciting a reading of Shakespeare as I've seen on film or on stage. For sheer entertainment, it is the winner.

On the other hand, Olivier's version evens the score, so to speak, with its music and historical dimensions, to say nothing of Olivier's inspired reading of the lines. I'm a sucker for William Walton's classic score which would be impressive even if it accompanied shots of the Energizer bunny circling in front of the Yellow Pages instead of Olivier's swaggering Henry in front of the stylized sets (reportedly done on purpose to mimic manuscripts contemporary to the story).

I've also read that that Olivier's film played a significant role in boosting morale in England during WWII, and watching it in that light adds an interesting historical dimension that helps overcome the sometimes stagy movements of the characters.

So when I say it's a tie, it's comparing a visceral apple with an intellectual orange. :>)

Gibson is dramatic, but for me, the two movies and the differences really boiled down to Hamlet's line at the peak of his emotions, "It has made me mad!" Olivier delivers it brilliantly, as Hamlet stops, and in self-realization, realizes that he truly has started to lose his mind. Gibson delivered it as "ooooh, I'm so pissy."

Back to Henry V, for me, the movie culminated in Branagh's St. Crispin's Day speech. Truly inspiring. (BTW, I looked it up, and you're right of course, it's spelled "Branagh") That did it for me.

This was about 2 years ago, which was about 2 years after starting the thread...

Now last week... (ignore the terrible camera shots)....

We've now got them stacked everywhere... my initial goal with the thread was to increase my DVD collection. From about 30 to over 300 now.

Obviously my top 3 have changed a little...

I'm still a big fan of Swordfish... always been a good movie to me, probably not my top movie, but still up there. I actually have that one on HD-DVD now too.

Batman Returns has been my most watched movie over the last year. Excellent movie... I can't see it enough and definitely at the top.

Of course LOTR's has got to be up there for me too... along with The Godfather series.

I don't think you're using Magnepans and floor-standing mains at the same time, so it looks like you've got some acoustical panels. New dual subs, and it looks like your center channel is pregnant!

Hey David... I'm about to embark on an 8 X 15" IB project for that room. Although those dual subs are awesome.

Brendon... I'm thinkin' about changing the paint scheme to medium gray instead of dark burgundy. It doesn't exactly look like dark burgundy there but it is.

I just saw Master and Commander a couple of months ago for the first time... excellent movie. Not sure how I missed it.

Chris... that's acutally a Denon 3806 used for pre-pro and the Earthquake Cinenova Grande handles the main power (600 watts @ 4ohms into those VMPS RM30's). And yes those are acoustical panels and dually SVS Plus/2's.

You pegged those movies right! It's amazing how quick a movie collection can grow.
