    Testing 1 2 Testing 1 2 (read me)

Today, I heard from our friend Ralph at Alpha DVD, and he had this to say:

"I just finished up the second disc in the Planet Earth series. I have six
extra copies of the check disc to give away to any registered HTGuide
members who would like one. All I ask is they give me feedback (positive or
negative) on the title once they have a chance to play it.

As always a check disc is bit for bit identical to the final product, but it
does not have a color disc label or fancy package. I have tested the check
discs and they are fine, this is what we will use for the production run.
The title is scheduled to be released on March 19, 2002."

So, ONLY the first 6 people to post to this thread will qualify for this offer. Your address must be sent to:

    thxdoug@direcpc.com

I don't want these coming to me anyplace but at home, thanks. BTW, my @home.com addresses are going away. So now, it's direcpc. 8)

    Enjoy,
    Lex

This is what it is -

Featuring spectacular video of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and New Zealand taken from the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. Greg if you don't mind I'd like to check out this disk when you've had a chance to look at it. No sense shipping two up to Winnipeg.

                    Ralph thanks for the info.

Doug, any idea when the people who sent you their address will get the discs?
Just wondering when I should start watching the mail

Ralph, are you out there? I've received my Earthlight disc and sat down to watch it last night. Great scenery and music! One question though:

On my 58" Pioneer Elite Pro out of a non-progressive Panny RV-80 DVD player I was seeing a LOT of "shimmering" that I've never seen before. I realize that these are pre-prod, and this IS NOT a complaint - I'm just curious. What caused the effect?

Do you have a line doubler between your DVD player and the monitor? Some line doublers have problems with the 480P(30) format I use on the Planet Earth titles. If that is the case bypassing the line doubler will actually improve the video.

The disc I sent you is not a "pre-production" version, it is the real thing, just without the final color disc label artwork.

The challenge I have with this series of discs is that I am creating the video in the 480P(30) format. This is essentially the highest quality video that the DVD-Video specification allows. 480P(30) means the video is created at 30 frames/second, and is encoded in the 480 Progressive Scan format.

When 480P(30) video is displayed on an interlaced monitor, very fine details will shimmer a bit when they move in the vertical direction. This is an "interlace" artifact caused by the NTSC format and the way it actually displays two 240 line fields every 1/60 of a second.

I have run a "de-interlacing" filter on the video before it was encoded which makes the interlace problem less severe than it could be, but will also "soften" the video a bit when it is displayed on a progressive scan monitor.

So essentially I have had to compromise a bit to include video that looks great on progressive scan monitors, and acceptable on interlaced monitors. If you can you should try to look at the video on a computer or HDTV screen. All that shimmering will go away.

Aside from the shimmering what else did you think of the Planet Earth: Australia title?

                            Hi Ralph,

Thanks for the information. No, I don't have a doubler. I'm actually sitting on the fence about getting a Panny RP-91 or waiting a few months to see if they come out with a new model with the same progressive performance and a better de-interlacer.

As far as the images and music, we (my wife, her sister and myself) all gave it a thumbs-up. Not only was it relaxing to watch and listen to, it was fun play "can you tell what this is?"

Thanks much for a very nice DVD.
