    Pitch Black

Old news, maybe, but not having seen any trailers, not knowing anything about this movie, (except that it's sci-fi), I bought it a few weeks ago, and watched it this Sunday afternoon while my daughter was over at some friends watching Coyote Ugly. Actaully, I made it a little bit of an experience by dragging the NEC Xm29Plus out of the bedroom and hooking up the audio through my main system, just using stereo downmix from the SB-Live Platinum in the new HDTPC.

    Movie:

Story: It's a simple premise, a "low rent" transport get's holed by meteor showers, crashlands on a planet with multiple suns, and some dangers lurking in the shadows- including an upcoming total eclipse. What saves it is a good script, strong character acting, very good but not overblown special effects, an interesting characters- don't look for simple heroes or villians here.

Picture: Uses interesting cinematography effects to portray the effect of multiple suns with a different color spectrum than ours- outlandish but plausible landscapes, great crashlanding sequence, much more plausible handling of aerodynamics issues, pilot issues, etc, than average; gernally clear, sharp transfer, with minimal pixelation or banding in background areas (where they usually try to save bits in the transfer). Good sound effects and score- sounded great through my main system, even though coming from a PC- yes, it's DD, but good speakers and seemingly limitless dynamic range help.

I'd rate this one of the best, perhaps the best Sci-Fi release of the last couple of years. No Jar Jar Binks, either!

When I first saw this at the theater I had a different take on it, I liked very little about it...other than the creatures, and the crash landing...Ving Diesel was pretty good also (guy with the eyes)
I have now seen it twice on DVD and have a different perspective...it's actually not bad, don't expect anything very deep, or mind blowing, but for a lazy evening with the guys it's not bad.
I'll tell you the one that surprised me upon a second viewing...that's Battlefield Earth...as long as I don't compare it to the book (which I did when I saw it at the theater) it's actually alot of fun, I think better than Pitch Black!

I'll be watching Battlefield Earth this weekend. I never did read the book,so I'll probably look at it differently. I just can't believe it's as bad as all those reviews.

        Welcome to the HTG George.

I think that Pitch Black is a very enjoyable film. Of course, I also like Supernova. I feel that both of these films did exactly what they were designed to do, provide an entertaining break from reality. And the sound on each DVD was more that adequate.
