    The first Non-Admin DIY Post!

Well, kind of...my speakers were actually built by the admins of this area of the HT Guide, but I assisted in their finishing
Last week Thomas invited me over to finish up these great speakers so that I could replace my older Infinity RS3's with something that had a little more balls And these speakers certainly do have a set on 'em!
First off, I want to thank Thomas and Jon for creating these in the first place. I can't tell you how honored I feel to have a matching front soundstage created by two extremely talented and well versed speaker builders. Their knowledge definitely sings through in these speakers.
These things are NOT light, by any means at all. I'm guessing they weigh around 85lbs each, because of the solid MDF sides. They were a lot of fun to finish, but not fun to carry to the car
I left Thomas' house and took them home, and FINALLY got them upstairs. I turned on my TV to warm it up before I even got them in the room. Oh yes, it was demo time!
I managed to get them into my room and in place. I hooked them up and powered everything else on. I was serious about getting some use out of these.
The first thing I put in was Fight Club, and holy mother of jesus, these things sang right along. The opening music sounded insane!
See, I had bookshelves before, so this was a treat for me, because I got to jump into my Denon's menu once more and set the fronts and center from SMALL to LARGE, and man that made all the difference in the world.
Where the mids sounded good before, they sounded absolutely heavenly now. I had it pretty loud too, and these guys didn't even flinch.
The scene where he's in the jet, and it starts to crash...well...I knew it was coming up, I've seen this movie a dozen times, but this was the ONLY time it actually startled the hell out of me. I guess I wasn't expecting the PUNCH (no pun intended, heh) that the speakers delivered.
This may be random, but one other scene really grabbed my attention. The scene just before they crash the car, where they are getting in the car and it's raining. It actually made me extremely nervous, as the rain sounded so real. I honestly thought for a split second that there was water in my room. That was extremely impressive!
I had a lot of work to do yesterday and the day before, so I didn't get as much demo time as I would have liked.
But I did get a chance to throw in a few more, included Saving Private Ryan DTS. Once again, I was shocked by what these speakers were doing.
I especially love the center channel. It sounds a lot more natural when there's dialogue in the movies now. It's not too muddy, not too bright, it's just perfect!
I'm just extremely excited about having these things, and hearing what they can do! Thanks to both Jon and Thomas for creating such an amazing set of speakers!!!

PS, a very special thanks goes out to Thomas for all of his help, and for taking the pictures of the insides of the speakers before sealing them. AND for helping out by submitting all of the captions for the finishing process!

Looking good there Joey! I see your building a custom enclosure for your TV. Be interested to see the end result.

Also, your speakers would image better if you could get them in front of the TV, and move the computer workstation. I know, sometimes we just can't have everything the way we want it. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

Your speakers could use some room to breath. That's all I am saying. It will make your imaging, that much better.

J6P, looking very spiffy! Is the dual input terminal cup used so that you can bi-amp them? I'm not sure what you'd be bi-amping though since you don't have a drive woofer in the speakers. Got any schematics of the crossover section(s)? The crossover section(s) look very impressive.

I re-watched Fight Club last night after reading J6P's speaker review. I hadn't watched the entire DVD with my new Sunosub, and what got me was when you get to the scene where Tyler and Jack are playing chicken in the car, and they finally hit that car on the side of the road, and the cars fall into the side of the ditch. I swear to you that I felt the car slide down in that ditch! Now that was COOL! I'm not sure if I had it Joey-Loud, but it was loud enough to startle me (again) during the plane explosion.

                Just thought I'd share.

The speakers are all setup to be bi-wired if Joey desires. I doubt that at this point he'd hear much difference since his speaker wire runs are very short.

I'll scan a printout of the XO schematics, and email it to Joey so he can post it to his site. There are separate boards for the hi and lo pass sections

The mid/woofers in Joey's MTM are ScanSpeak kevlars.

Great work guys! But may I ask why no finish on the fronts of the cabinets?

Laminate finished fronts, spikes for the bottoms and "clamps" for the woofers are the final part of the process.

Joey lives in Ft Collins, I'm in Denver, it's a long day when he's driving back and forth given the distance and traffic. So we work about 6 hours/day and do one stage of the finishing at a time

Whoops! Didn't realize, though perhaps I should have, that you were working in stages. Look forward to seeing the final results.

                          EMT,
I'd love to be able to complete everything in one shot, but man, it's a crappy drive when you're tired
When we built my SonoSub the first time I didn't leave until like 11PM at night, and we still weren't finished, heh. Sometimes time escapes and next thing I know I'm late in getting home. But I told Mandi that from now on when I go to Thomas' house I don't have a clue when I'll be home, it may be within 4-5 hours, it may be 12+ heh, depending on the project.
It's only about an hour to hour and a half drive, but man when you're tired and you have that outer shell that is caused by being covered in sawdust, and then sweating, and then it drying, that hour and a half seems like an eternity. Plus, it seems as though nothing we've built yet has been light, so there's also the "I've been lugging this sucker around all day" factor
Whenever I get home from his house it's a struggle between wanting to hooked up the new toys and play and wanting to hit the couch and take a nap.
One more trip though and we're set, and then I'm done with building my HT speakers. Maybe we'll build a nice DVD player next...hardcore DIY extreme!!!

Nice speakers, and the best part is you get huge bang for the buck...and can say you built them yourself!
That center channel looks very familiar, I've seen it on another web site...YES, it looks like the same design Thomas used before his new Marquis plus???

                              Joey,

Was poking around some old links and found the previous pics of these speakers. Just wondering how they turned out. Joey, did you and Thomas ever get the time to complete the finish?

                                Hi Ellen

No Joey hasn't had time to bring them back down to Denver. We need to laminate the fronts, and do the little final detail work on the back.

Joey's still recovering from moving into a house from his old apt. So I don't know when he'll have any spare time
