    Upgraded from 683 to 804s

I just wanted to share my excitement as to my recent upgrade to 804s (rosenut) from my 683's.

I wasn't planning on doing this upgrade at this time, but with the change in the 800 series I didn't feel I would be willing to shell out for the price increase later. My dealer had one pair of 804s which were their demos for the last few months, and he indicated that he could not get anymore of the 804s.

Another gentlemen was looking at them and trying to decide between the 805s and the 804s.. I bought them out from under him.. I guess if you snooze you loose.

Anyways, I got them home and setup this evening. I have only had an hour or so to listen to them.. My first impression is WOW... I knew the 683's weren't as good at the 804s, but I am baffled at how there is such a difference in resolution, clarity and sound stage from a speaker that is about the same size, has a very similar driver arrangement and is same manufacturer.

Even my wife, who rolls her eyes when I talk about sonic difference, immediately said she noticed a huge difference and that the sound was excellent. I was worried she was going to say they all sound the same to her.

Well.. I am a happy man! But of course, what thread is worth anything without pictures....

    Wow!

    What a delicious room, stuofsci!

    My congratulations for the up-grade!

Just a curiosity: is the little dog on the left a real dog or a fake one?

I also came from the 683 to the 804S:

If you think that's a nice jump, going from the HTM61 to the HTM3S is an even bigger one! The main differences I noticed from the 683 to the 804S is that the 804S have less coloration - they sound so transparent. Probably the more solid and sound cabinet at work here where I always thought the 600's had a minor boxy sound to them. They're more 3D and airy - the sound seems to emit from all around the speaker then a focused pin-point. Probably the out of the box tweeter at work here (I'm sure there's more to it, but that's probably the main contributor). And of course, the main thing I care about personally, is tons of fine detail.... just like wearing headphones!

Enjoy your new 804s, or actually, your music at an elevated level of quality. 8)

                    emig5m,

When did you upgrade? I tried to get the HTM4S is rosenut, but there were non left :M .. My dealer gave me full trade in value on the 683s, but could only give me about 50% on my HTM61. So since I wanted a center for movies I decided to keep it.. I will look out for the HTM4S used and see if I can sell the HTM61 when the time comes.

Your are right.. The transperancy is really the noticeable factor. I didn't realize just how much the 683 cabinet was contributing to the sounds.. I guess I should expect as much given these are three times the price..

Congrats to you to on your upgrade..

I also had a similar upgrade path, I went from this:

to b&w 683 and an htm-2 and once I tried the 800 series I was sold

Then I could not resist any longer

watching movies will never be the same.

Last August. I was originally just going use the HTM61 since I don't critically listen to movies like I do with music but I know the centers are the weak link in the 600 series and it bothered me to not have the matching center for my mains. I didn't know they would be so hard to come by soon after. Glad I went for it sooner than later, heh. Now the thing is I was hoping to pickup a brand new set of 805S's to replace my 685's in the rear next summer but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now, heh. Used is fine as long as I can find them in pristine condition.

That looks great.. Your path was very similar to mine actually....

I went like this for my mains:

                          2005 - Tannoy Fusion 2 Books Shelves
                          2006 - B&W DM 602.5 S3
                          2007 - B&W DM 603 S3
                          2008 - B&W 683
                          2010 - B&W 804S

I did also have a CMC center for a few months while I was waiting for my HTM61. I actually prefer that speaker to the HTM61..

Yeah.. I actually dislike the sound of my HTM61.. I always thought it did not match well with the 683.

Do you trade in your speakers? I can for one year at full value.. Before you go and get a set of 805s you might just want to wait and hear the new 804D.
