    Driver characteristics

I asked a dealer in Seas drivers what the differences in the RCY/P, RLY/P and RNX/P series aluminum drivers were and was given this reply...

    Voice Coils:
    "C" 26mm diameter, 12mm length
    "L" 26mm diameter, 16mm length
    "N" 39mm diameter, 18mm length

    Magnets:
    No Letter 0.25 Kg
    "Y" 0.42 Kg
    "X" 0.64 Kg

The 12cm, 15cm, 18cm, 22cm and 26cm frames all have raised spiders and some have bumped back plates.
Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what affect on T/S, performance and/or sound these driver characteristics may have, if any.

Any comments you experts have would be most interesting.

Well, to put it most simply, different strokes for different folks.

Between the "C" and the "L" versions, the main differentiator is the voice coil length and throw; the L, with a longer VC, has a higher Xmax, but has lower sensitivity due to less of the total voice coil being in the gap at any time. This also results in a slightly higher Qts. In prinicple, this means that for a given cone size, it will have somewhat lower distortion in the bass, somewhat greater bass output capability, and a bit lower sensitivity. If you want a little cleaner, deeper low end, that may be preferred.

The RNX/P series addresses performance issues by increasing power handling (long term) with a larger voice coil, which of course requires a bigger magnet in order to maintain close to the something close to the same BL product and efficiency as the smaller VC brethern.

Personally, I think the L18RNX/P is well worth the typical extra $5 bucks; seems like a very nice driver for the money, a "poor persons" W18. I've been giving that driver a lot of thought for my X1 upgrades, as opposed to going all the way for some Excel's, especially I won't be running at much below 125 Hz.

    Best regards,

    Jon
