    paint 703 speakers possible?

    Guys,

I own a 703 pair that has a maple colour (had the possibility to buy them at a really good price). Is it possible to paint them black? If so, how would I do this for getting the best result?

Sand them, then use a good air sprayer and then clearcoat. Just depends on what you're after regarding surface finish. It won't look like black ash necessarily.

HTM61 doesn't have the real wood veneer that the 703 has. Its vinyl and paint may be the best way to cover that. If you paint the 703’s, you will loose some of the quality of the wood.
For the real wood, there are several ways to stain, after sanding. But, you must completely sand off the original finish, being very careful not to sand though the veneer. India ink will make the wood very black, and anything else that it touches – especially clothes, or skin. And it’s PERMANENT. A good woodworking shop will have other dies, as well, and can be mixed to achieve the shade that you like. I mixed some brown with India ink to give more of a wood color, when finishing a cabinet. Then a fine, thinned urethane finish will retain the fine wood quality.
Of course, using a good paint thinned enough to allow the grain to show through would work, but I couldn’t make myself paint a pair of 703s. The fronts of the HTM61 are black, and allowed the masking and painting, but the front of the 703 is finished wood. It would be necessary to remove the drivers and tweeters from the cabinet. A lot of work, but if done properly, could be very nice.

Nice work! Looks as though they turned out V nice!

As for the OP, a post over at the 'mission possible' forum would most likely get you tons of suggestions.

I'm sure it is possible, but you would destroy the soul of that speaker in the process

Agreed. It enhances the speakers' ability to shine sonic light into the murk and it gives the music a jet-black background.

                    Hi,
                    I agree with leej.

                    Paint a 70x or 80x??? No please!!! 8O
Well possible is possible but no DIY!!the have a good wood painted is not easy.

You have to disconnect the woofer, midrange, ... all electronics
After this you can you work "on pure wood". at first you have to discolor the original color with the right products and then continue with the work...
( and this is time and $$$$)

You can't do this job with a spray, like a "writer".

                    this is my opinion.

I am not a woodworker type so my opinion is that if you got a great deal on them, then you should sell them for a profit and buy the color that you really want.

I'd just wait for the right color to pop up on audiogon. There are rumors that the 700s may be replaced soon. If you're not happy with the current 700s sound qualities, wait for the new ones to come out and decide what you want to do. If you're happy with the current 700s, when the new ones come out, there will be plenty of used sets on sale on audiogon. I know that itch to upgrade, when you see something that doesn't sit right with your eyes within the system. Try and hold out as long as you can, I swear we're all boarder-line OCD lol.
