    Sealed AV12 Sub for Zak

Solid Honduran mahogany legs and top with gloss black laminate on the enclosure.

A low Q (.57) sealed AV12. Zak decided to get a seperate amp, so we installed binding posts.

Lookin' good, there Pete! That's a new combo - gloss black and mahogony - I like it. I'm sure the WAF will be high.

Hank, he said the wife was happy. That's what counts.

Pat, I had a slightly smaller version in the house for a couple days. The AV12 is a very nice driver. Works very well in smallish enclosures.

Attractive concept- I like it better than some of the "end table" style cabinets I've seen people create that are all wood, but a bit too busy in the details. How close does the gloss laminate come to a piano grade finish "in the flesh"? And what's the Fb in this box at Qtc=0.57?

I've been thinking about something like this for my HE15, using maple for the hardwood, since the orange box stores carry it now, only problem is the wattage it will take to drive it to reasonable LF output. (don't have room for an Aerial Stryke!)

          Regards,

          Jon

And what's the Fb in this box at Qtc=0.57?
33 Hz. Not bad for this sized box.

How close does the gloss laminate come to a piano grade finish "in the flesh"?
The telltale for laminate has always been the edges. With this design, they are hidden by the legs. The gloss black is really nice....until it scratches. or fingerprints, dust, smudges etc.....

If you use standard grade (1/16" thick) and make sure it has the peel coat for protection, it is fairly easy to work with. Keeping the peel coat on until the final unveiling is key to keeping it scratch free. Just gotta watch for grit getting under the router base. Use of some talcum powder to keep the router base gliding over the coating helps move things along.
