    Cauer filters on LDSG

Looks like the world is trying to catch up with Jon! :yesnod:

I think I spotted a couple of small errors in the article but at least I have a better idea what Jon is talking about with his Cauer filters. Just one more cap than a standard 4th order alignment.

So, the broad stroke idea is the extra cap turns the second half of the 4th order filter into a notch filter and this is what you get.

That's the basic idea; technically, these are called finite zero filters, as after a steep transition band, the additional zero causes a decrease in the roll off.

Ideally, the filter corner function is adjusted so that the roll off characteristic matches a known acoustic transfer target, such as an 8th order Linkwitz Riley. This can easily be done down to -30 dB; IMO, this is the truly useful (for crossovers) way to use this filter concept.

Jason doesn't apper to have done that, and has more passband ripple in his filters near the corner than I'd want to see (they can be reduced to the same level as the "bounce-back", which means -50 dB, as oppsed to 1-2 dB), but he's got the right basic idea.

I first used passive cauer-elliptic filters in Class D amplifier designs published in conference papers (mine) when I was working for Siemens (which has become Infineon, my current employer) in the late 80's; I used that concept again in a newer class D design presented at an AES conference and published subsequently in the AES journal in 1992.

      Best regards,

      Jon
