    porting speakers

I was modeling my M8a box's with a 4" flared vent to tune them to 32 hz. Assuming the internal volume is 50 liters I get a vent that is supposed to me 15" long. Now its been awhile since I've used a flared vent but I seem to remember that I need to adjust that lenght due to the flares? Also how much room do I need to leave between the front of the flare and the front baffle? I think its 2" minimum based on a 4" port but I've been wrong before

    Andrew,

IIRC, when using the flared ports you should add 1" to the total length that is required for a non-flared port. Also, the general rule is that a 4" port should be 4" from the opposing wall.

      Brian's suggestions are sound.

The original M8a design, which uses an actual internal volume (once you subtract for drivers, braciing, the port, etc., of about 35 liters, uses a 3" flared port, about 10" long. There's nothing to be gained using a 4" port, as the port velocity which can be produced by the maximum Xmax of the M8a driver isn't high enough for it to be a concern. Smaller than 3" would be a problem.

Use Unibox with Excel 2K or XP to confirm the tuning for your particular enclosures.

      Best regards,

      Jon
