    Measurements and driver break-in

    Hello gurus.

    I'm just wondering whether driver break-in significantly changes the frequency response. I've been measuring my new Seas W22s and they seem to roll off rather more quickly at the top end (1K or so) than the published curves might indicate.

    This may be because I am measuring them in baffle and in room, but I was just wondering how or if break-in affects these things, and how long you should wait before doing final measurements.

    Hi Steve,

    In my experience, break in affects only the suspension compliance (which increases a little), and results in a slightly lower Fs and corresponding change in the Qts of the driver.

    Seas makes most of the woofer measurements in a box without an IEC baffle, so they show the effects of baffle step, with a step down in the response below 1 kHz.

    The W22 is an odd critter, in that the nearfield response is quite flat to 1 kHz, and does roll off/dip above that, until it hits the first break up peak.


    The W18 is much flatter than the W22, and is usable up to 2 kHz or so, understanding the dispersion limitations which arise.



    The W22, however, starts rolling off at 1 kHz, has a pronounced dip before it hits the resonance.



    I wouldn't plan on using the W33 above 1 to 1.25 kHz; in fact, it's relatively difficult response profile is one reason I didn't use it compared with the HiVi M8a.
