    Regular vs thick baffel

    Hello

If you create a very thick baffel for a loadspeaker (wonder who might want to do that ), there will be quite a difference in the way the speaker elements is damped.
At least if you just uses a hole that's the same size through the whole baffel (not cone).
You should see what I mean on the image below:

When having a thick baffel, the whole element will be almost closed inside the wood, while having a thin baffel will let mutch of the element "float around" in free air.

How, if any, will this affect the sound coming from the element?
Should there be done anything to avoid this effect?

    regards, TEK

This is very much a factor in the choice of drivers as well as baffle design. Some drivers which I've like in the past required using a special mounting plate because even a 3/4" baffle did too much masking.

In some cases, one must have a tapered rear opening for the baffle - a tunnel with parallel walls is not desirable. Additionally, relief routing with a large roundover bit is often desirable.

In my own designs I've combined stiffer hardwoods with MDF for internal cabinet braces.

    Regards,

    Jon

Jon is this a concern with my 1.5" thick M8a walls?

Because of the magnet and frame design, there's plenty of rear clearance. I use a total baffle thickness of 1.75".
