    speaker building project - update

What seems like eons ago I started building four new M8a speakers to replace my energy's which replaced me maggies...anyway I've made a lot of progress lately so I thought I'd share some pics I took this weekend.

Here's a few shots of the box's and the cross overs. I decided to take the easy route with regard to finishing them so what I'll be doing is making a black soak from acoustic fabirc that will slip around the sides, front and backs. The top and bottom will have a black cover panel that will be rounded over and attached with velcro. I rounded over the back edges with my router and for the front I simply glued on some quater rounds to lift the cloth above the drivers and gasket material.

The cross overs will be held in place with industrial velcro and as soon as the L-pads arrive I should be ready to give at least one set a try!

    High Pass XO's

While building these I also decided to rebuild my subs so they're built and finished in a similar fashion as the M8a's . These will act as stands for the M8a's Presently I'm using a pair of Paradigm atoms as mains...these will move up into the living room for my second zone as soon as the M8a's are finished.

They look great -- can you hear them in that “dead “ room? :>)

Hey, is that a water heater sub in the background?

Tonight the l-pads arrived so I was able to get the first two up and running. First impressions are positive but it will be sometime before I'm ready to really review these beauties...one things for sure I haven't heard this much detail since I had my maggies Second impression is damn these things can play loud without distorting...I cranked them as loud as I could stand it and they still had plenty left in the tank!

Looks like you put a lot of careful work into these, Andrew. Balancing the Lpad's optimally by ear may take a little listening for a while. Do you have any way at all to check the level in the lower mids versus above 1.5 kHz? The ideal thing to do would be to connect up a set of the Phoenix Lpads and measure them, and make a calibrated dial plate- you know, "flat", + 1.5 dB, -1.5 dB, whatever. That kind of range would actually cover most situations, I think.

              Best regards,

              Jon

I'm working on the pics. I spent yesterday redoing the highpass/zobel boards since I goofed on them the first time round (minor mod) and painting all the box's black. I now just have to finish the end caps and pull the grill socks on and I'll have them done!
