    "Deluxe" DIY Speaker Stands ;-)

One of the things ThomasW and I did some extensive work on last week was speaker stands, driven mostly by my dissatisfaction with the biggiest Lovan stands and the old Celestion stands we still had around for our bookshelf project, the M-8.

Well, we think the results speak for themselves.

A party who had borrowed the M-8's the week before conceeded that they sounded "worlds better" at ThomasW's, with these stands in use.

I don't see how how you could ask for a more ringing unsoloicited endorsement, huh?

We suggest completing them with high grade finishes, such as flat black, or, in the manner of Wilson Audio, premium metallic automotive finishes- for an example, see their new "Sephia".

Materials cost is so rediculously low I'm not even going to bring the subject up. Oops. :B

This post was delayed because I was too lazy to copy the picture file off my laptop, so instead I got the laptop hooked up to my DSL.

    Have a good weekend, everyone!

    -Jon

Please don't tell me you actually put concrete in that concrete tube! Don't you know they're just for sub enclosures.

Given Thomas's joist re-inforcement (for the IB sub manifold, which is only a few feet away, we were tempted to- but the "stands" were so "non-resonant" without it, we thought we'd leave that kind of detail to some fo the other fanatical audio buffs lurking on this forum. :B

Next would be a study with accelorometer pickups on the stand walls as to which 'crete produced the least resonance. Or, perhaps, tunes the resonance to the most optimum frequency?

What is silly, is how often a simple thing like optimum stand placement will really improve the overall soundstage as well as perceived frequency response. Measurably, compared with an 18" or 24" stand, it cut the floor bounce significantly, and smoothed out the upper midbass and lower midrange at the listening position. It also widened the sweet spot a bit.

And they *were* dirt cheap, just being built with odds and sods Thomas had lying around the basement- most expensive part was the ten or so hot glue sticks I went thorugh putting them together.

Seems like the tweeter is pretty high. I'll guess at a 30" stand and another 18" to the tweet? Do you have any forward tilt to the speaker/stand?

OT: I've been researching the "Linus Array" that Jim Griffin and Rick Craig have put together. TW's line array looks impressive, and started the yearning again.

The tweeter's fairly high, but it has great dispersion. The design axis of the speaker is the woofer, and having it up this high also reduces floor interactions. It's just that people are usually used to just seeing dinky minimonitor boxes up on stands, I think.

The speakers behind them are Tom's Acoustat 1+1's, with a line array of Technics leaf ribbon tweeters. We engineered that a few years ago- around '92 if I recall. Wasn't much stuff on the Madisound forum back than about line arrays....

I built mine out of scrap 4" and 6" wide PVC pipe and MDF:

But mine won't crumple if you try to kick in the sides.

Your's are similar to the recipe I'm working on for my "nice" ones- 6" PVC pipe, 1" thick bases and tops; I'm planning two pipes, front to back, a base about 14" wide, spiked, and a top section about 10" wide; height will be in the range of 26-30", still undergoing some thought and experiementation. Gotta reduce those early floor bounces. Have you ever tried higher stands for your Suns? You might like it- the sound, anyway. WAF may not be as good, of course.

I have been thinking about raising the height (I still have some more spare 6" wide PVC pipe), but at the current height the midpoint of the tweeter/midrange is at ear level - I don't like tweeters at ear level. If I were to raise the height, I might go another 6" at the most.

I need to find a better way to cut PVC pipe (I cut the original pipes by hand with a lil' PVC hand saw, but I'm NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN!)

                  Pat,

Your buddy with the table saw doesn't have a compound miter saw? That's the only way to cut pipe, IMHO!

WTH is a compound miter saw? If I knew what it looked like, I might look for it in his tool shop.
