Alignment for HE-15 Subs

I am about ready to start building the enclosures to house my two HE-15's. Initially I bought these units with the idea of using them in a sonotube enclosure since the 'droop' calculations would indicate they would be OK,...., but, after reading numerous comments herein, I have had to reconsider. ThomasW's enclosure is very inviting but my sorry old bones can't seem to heft around 300 pounders any more.

My desire is for a ported enclosure for both home theater and music application. What I have in mind is for the HE-15 to be housed in a lower 'box' with the element axis horizontal with a sonotube extended vertically to create the volume needed for the port length. The port would be vertical and would exit the top of the sonotube.

This is where memory begins to hinder.......I vaguely remember reading here or elsewhere that a ported alignment should have both the speaker axis and the port axis in alignment. Is my memory correct?? What are the ill effects of such an arrangement where the port and speaker are perpendicular to each other??

No ill effect, because at these wavelengths the sound is omnidirectional. Some manufacturers put the port exiting the bottom or back of the enclosure, depending on the design goals and tradeoffs.

It sounds like a it may be an "interesting" enclosure to build compared with just a staight sonotube. Good luck with your project.
