    EBP...

It's my understanding that a subwoofer with a low Efficiency Bandwidth Product should not be used in a vented cabinet. For example,I understood this to be the reason that the NHT 1259 is specifically not recommended for such an application. What I've never seen is a clear description of what would result from such a loading, except that it would sound terrible, with very bad transient response (although the fr LOOKS amazing in such a box). Is this the case?

Anyone care to clarify exactly what is going on here, and how the various parameters that make up the EBP conspire against or for a type of loading?

Also, I assume (yikes) that a driver unfit for reflex loading would be similarly unsuitable for use with a passive radiator. Is this the case?

Just something I've been wondering about, trying to grasp what that number actually means. Thanks.

It's something of an oversimplification, but it comes dow to the Qts of the driver- ported systems work best with drivers in the range of 0.25 to 0.4; higher Qts, and as you say, the transient response suffers for a ported sytem. You're best off with a sealed system. This is neglecting discussing Qms, Vas, and Fs, but those more affect what frequency range the driver will work well at, and how large a box. Personally, even for sealed systems I don't like to see over 0.4, and for reflex systems I prefer 0.3 as the sweet spot. YMMV.
