It's 16 cf, it's ugly, it's the "Thing"

I got my new sub finished Friday. It's a sealed twin Tempest sub, 16 cu.ft. .6 Qtc.



Ugly, ain't it!

But here's the good news. It'll be totally hidden by the entertainment center I'm going to build. Here's what it looks like now.



Luckily, the in-room FR that LspCad predicted was really close to what I've initially measured. Much smoother response than the old corner loaded sub.

Lots more testing to dial it in but so far, so good!

Hi Pete,

Beauty is as beauty does, and it sounds like your new TEMPFEST sub is a thing of beauty, based on what it does. A Q of 0.6 sealed alignment should sound pretty fine- what are your driving the beast with?

Your mounting arrangement is an interesting innovation- it's a welcome break from the plethora of floor mounted subs we always see. Or IB subs with manifolds in the floor that would trap a large dog . How heavy is it, and how did you hang it from the wall? :E I suppose I could put subs or centers above my screen, too, come to think of it. Sometimes things just don't occur to me....

The only thing that would preclude me ever embarking on such a beast is the non-flexible position of the sub (in the event you wind up sitting in a room null and can't move the subwoofer to alleviate the situation). But definitely a more creative approach to bass enclosures. Nice job!

I used 1-4x8 and 1 1/2-5x8 of 3/4" MDF. At 50 lb/cu.ft it works out to over 350lbs!!! I'm not sure it's that heavy, but it was all that 2 guys could do to lift it! I mounted a 3" wide strip of plwood on the wall first, so once it was on that it was pretty easy to anchor.

It's measuring +/-5 dB 20-100 Hz in-room with no EQ. Right now it's being powered with an AVA250 plate amp, but that will probably change soon.
