    Concreete as a Tube???

    Hi All
I have been reading about all the people
using sonotube for there DIY subs and was
wondering why not use a Concreete culvert pipe
as an alternative to the Paper sono products???
other than it weighing a ton and being a little
harder to adapt I would think it would make
an excellent non resonate enclosure for a high
SPL,low QTS driver.Has anyone tryed this or
    thought of this???

    Hi,

The only time cabinet resonance is a problem, is when the resonant frequency of the enclosure, is in the same frequency range as the speaker is operating.

With regard to sonatube, it's resonant frequency is much higher than the frequencies being produced by any sub. Therefore it's cabinet resonance is not a problem.

Wall flex also isn't a significant issue, because the cylindrical shape equalizes the pressure across the surface of the tube

This is one of the main attractions of using the cardboard tube. No stiffening or reinforcement of the cabinet wall is necessary. It is necessary to use fairly thick endcaps.

IIRC, Dan Marx at Audio Innovation was thinking about using a pipe of pipe for a subwoofer enclosure. He might still have his plans on his website. The real drawback is the weight of the pipe!

If you go with a large volumn enclosure, be sure to reinforce the floor, lol. Seriously, I just think the weight of it, and unfriendliness of the product would outweigh the benefits.

I did know of someone building one out of concrete, but don't know if he ever did it.
