    Plywood Cylinders

Thomas, have you seen these plywood cylinders, and would you know how they are made?

I assume that it would be structurally as strong as a sono tube?

I like the ability to finish a sub to fine grade furniture.

Bing, I think it's a perfectly viable idea, and this could have changed my opinion about a Sonosub before I built my own. Of course, the disadvantage is they are only available in 27.5" heights. Perfect for the end table sub, but maybe a little short for a full size sonosub.

    What do you think Thomas?

I don't have experience with that particular company but.....

The cylinders are made from what's called "bender board". It's a 2 ply plywood, with the grain of both plys running the same direction. A flexible glue is used and as a result the material can be bent into a very tight radius.

This material is frequently used to make those curved reception desks at fancy office buildings.

It is great for speakers. I made a set many years ago using it. I used sonatube as the "form" and attached the benderboard to it with 3M "Fastbond 5" laminate adhesive (sorry no pics )

It's very light weight and very flexible so something has to be used as a "form". But yes, its a great material for speakers. LOTS more work than a "sock" covered tube!!!!!

Unfortunately it's VERY expensive! The last time I bought it, the cost was $65/4'X8" sheet, and that was probably 8 years ago.

Here's a link to a pic where I believe they used bender board. I haven't specifically asked Rudi about it though. You might email him with a question.

Your right Lex, it would have to be end table dimensions with this stuff. I'm just exercising my options, a 30x27 tube would give me my required volume, but owch! it's $251 in red oak. still it would look beautiful!

Thomas, you never cease to amaze me with all these lovely speakers, and informative links that totally captures my imagination.

If someday you're real bored and need something to do, click below

Type in "Audio", or "Home Theater", "DIY loudspeakers", or "subwoofers" (without the quotes) then hit search and stand back!

When you find something that interests you, go to the right of the ring title and click on "List"

BTW, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

          Enjoy
          Thomas
