CD playback misses beginning of tracks

I've noticed a strange interaction with my cd player and receiver, when I play a cd using a digital input on the receiver it misses the first 1 second or so of whatever track I jump to.

Player is RCD-965BX/LE, about 10 yr old, and receiver is rsx-1057. It doesn't happen with analog input. It doesn't happen on digital input when played from the Mac Mini, and it doesn't happen on digital input from the cd player when the player gets to the next track on its own. In other words, it always misses the start of track 1, but if I let it go track 2 and the rest are ok. But if I skip tracks fwd or rev, it always misses the start of that track. I tried setting REPEAT and letting it go to the end of the disc and restart itself, still missed the start of track 1.

My theory is the receiver does not know it is PCM 2CH until after the data starts, even when it is already set to that mode. I see the receiver flash"PCM 2CH" when the track starts, as if it is just recognizing a new stream. When tracks play, it stays on PCM so the next track is ok, but if I skip the data stream stops to the receiver, and it has to re-sync or whatever when the track starts. With the mac, it stays on PCM the whole time, like there is a carrier signal or something. You know how they kind of hiccup the audio when it changes surround format or whatever, kind of like that.

Anyone noticed this? Anyone with any Rotel CD player and rsx receiver care to try it out? I want to take the player to the dealer and see how it acts on other receivers and on other rsx units, but i'm not supposed to drive for a while after shoulder surgery.

It's (almost) surely a trigger delay that's happening in your receiver... and I'm a little surprised Rotel – or their DAC suppliers – haven't addressed this by now.

This has been a recurring trait of Cirrus / Crystal DACs for some years... not sure what DACs Rotel employs.

People have mentioned this in passing over the years, but not much... and I guess it hasn't been addressed because either 1) music is a low priority for many, or 2) music is such a high priority for a few that they deliberately bypass a receiver's DACs.

    Either way, it's not fixable.

Theoretically, even your 10-yr old CD player should deliver equivalent or better sound quality when fed analog to your 1057.

Good as Rotel AV receivers are, they're still geared for movies first and foremost.

Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring
production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.
