    AV32R-EX Surround Modes

    Hi,
Just a quick question on the AV32 surround modes. I watched "Castaway" the other night and noticed that while in the DTS-ES mode the AV32 would display the rear back speaker on the display. When I switched the audio to DD-EX on the DVD menu the back surround speaker on the front display did not light up. I thought that DD-EX provided rear surround info? What would the proper mode for DTS-ES and DD-EX mode on the AV32?

    Thanks
    Rick

    Ah, an excellent question!
The icons on the front panel indicate the incoming bitstream status with DTS and DD streams.
DTS has manged to get the ES flag set on most of their discs that contain the extra channel.
    THX, sadly has not.
So the AV32R is reporting that the disc is DTS ES encoded, but there is no flag telling it the disc is DD-EX encoded. You can still run EX on it, and that will be displayed to the left in the text area.
Hopefully discs will start coming through with the EX flag set.
HOw was the audio on Castaway? I have not heard it yet.

      Buzz,

      Thanks for the reply!

The sound was very good and it is one of the few disks since the "Haunting" that has bottomed both of my SVS 20-39 subs. Time for a Stryke dual 15.4! :B Plus I just added another 6-ch Cinepro Amp to the HT so they were getting a little more power.

I must say that with all the available sound formats its hard to pick what to use. If the AV32R is set in the menu to use the back speakers for all multi channel formats I assume that it is a matrix format from the surround info? So, it would not matter if the surround button was set to DD or DD+Matrix. Without the DD-EX flags present and the AV32R set to DD+THXsurroundEX is the surround channel getting separate rear channel info or is the 32 just matrixing the standard surround info?

      Thanks
      Rick

If it is forced (by the user) into EX mode, it will attempt to extract the rear mono surround from the existing surround information. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not, it is highly mix dependent.
We look forward to the day the discs come through with proper flagging...
