    Pro Logic II

Just after TAG McLaren finished the 7 channel THX Surround EX Upgrade, adding Dolby EX, DTS-ES 6.1 Matrix and TAG McLaren Surround 7 to existing AV32R 5.1 processors, Dolby Laboratories announced the introduction of Pro Logic II, the next generation of Dolby Surround Pro Logic decoding technology. Pro Logic II brings exciting new features and advanced performance for decoding the many thousands of existing Stereo and Dolby Surround programmes, making them sound more like a discrete Dolby Digital 5.1-channel version than ever before.

AV32R owners can lean back and wait
...Pro Logic II is coming soon to you

Dolby Pro Logic II will be the biggest improvement to two channel recordings, be it for movie, tv or music.

Roger Dressler, Director of Technology Strategy for Dolby Laboratories explained: "The technology in Pro Logic II is the first fundamentally new approach in matrix decoder design since the basic design which is still at the core of every other active matrix surround decoder. Pro Logic II was designed from the outset to convert conventional stereo music recordings, which will be with us for some time to come, to a natural, believable surround experience. The result is a decoder that can handle a wide range of movie and music programme material with equal skill. Dolby is proud to be handling the licensing and technical support of this exciting new technology."

Pro Logic II is able to decode the thousands of existing Dolby Surround movies and TV shows already on the shelf, compatibly, and with enhanced image stability. The improvements in decoding techniques mean that the discreteness of the sound field elements are better-preserved in the decoding process than was possible with the now universally standard Pro Logic technology, developed in the mid 80s.

TAG McLaren's engineering team has started to implement Pro Logic II in the AV32R. We expect the upgrade to be simple, only a new software version will need to be loaded (there is a remote chance that Pro Logic II will need more processing power than one SHARC digital signal processor can provide. Should this be the case, we will simply fit a second SHARC to the AV32R; all AV32Rs are prepared for this upgrade). This software will be available from our network of retailers who can reprogram your AV32R or you can download the software from our website if you have a TAGtronic Programming Cable and access to a PC. The software upgrade will be chargeable to cover the licensing cost of the technology. The price isn't fixed yet as details of the licensing (and the pending question over the second SHARC) are still being discussed.

But don't rush immediately to your retailer, he will not be able to upgrade yet, more work is required to implement and thoroughly test this exciting new decoding standard. We will report when we have more news and experience with it. If you subscribe to our 'upgrade service' you will be kept informed.

I like the upgradability feature of this pre-pro Buzz. So, is there a cost for current owners to upgrade to DPL2 or DTS-ES discrete? Or are you all doing ES?

    Thanks,

    Lex

Yes there wil be a charge for PLII. The amount has not been finalized. We will also do ES, although PLII has a higher priority, particularly given the ratio of applicable titles available

Well I for one will be jumping on the DPL II bandwagon, and if I am lucky, I might even get to be the first USA AV32R owner to get the upgrade installed (hint, hint, Buzz ). After everything I have read about this exciting new technology, I just can't wait to find out what kind of improvements Jim Fosgate has in store for us all!
