Is it possible to really improve the sound of your CDs and DVDs?

I've heard of this company and tried one of their products once (the Silclear) but was wondering what people thought of this:

    Nonsense, right?

I believe this is what's commonly referred to as "Snake Oil".

Uh, make that "Digital Snake Oil".

Yeah, I think it's possible to improve the sound of your CD's and DVD's.

        1. Acoustical evaluation and treatment of listening room.

        2. Speaker upgrade.

        3. Source unit upgrade (unless you're running some pretty heavy iron already- say, an Esoteric SACD player, or Ayre C-5xe).

        4. Cable upgrades (again, unless you're running some pretty heavy copper or silver already- this is just "fine tune", although I can readily hear good cable upgrades even in a system without room treatements, especially for dipole speakers).

Total bull. That's like marketing an oil that when rubbed on the pages of your favorite book will make the story more interesting.

While I enjoy playing with the occasional tweak just to see if it does do something, this one sounds way too far out there for me. Like Jon posted above, there are lots better ways to invest your time/money/efforts unless you are one of the fortunates that have done everything legitimate to optimize their system and are finally looking at things like this.

Click your heals together 3 times just before you power up your amp and you won't believe how much better your system will sound.

The CD player reads 1s and 0s off of the disc. There is no subjectively improving the quality, it's just reading 1s and 0s either correctly or incorrectly. Unless this stuff can actually improve the error rate of the transport there's nothing it can do to improve the sound. It's LITERALLY like spreading something on the pages of a book to improve the story.

If it's based on physics, why not explain the physics in depth? Probably because it doesn't stack up when looked at in depth.
